Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q870 power button unresponsive but laptop powers up using media control button

Well this is perplexing, I could really use some help.
My power button on my Qosmio X505-Q870 is completely unresponsive. I've tried holding it for 30 seconds, but to no avail. I removed the battery & replaced the battery, testing the power button by pressing it for 30 seconds or rapidly pressing it - makes no difference whatsoever.  But then, I noticed if I touch the media touch button, the computer powers up! (And opens up Windows Media Player) Very stealthy...
Now when the laptop is already powered up, pressing the media button does not turn it off. It only opens Windows Media Player.
Here is some background info that may or may not be helpful:
1 1/2 years ago:
RAM was upgraded to 8 MB
I replaced the HDD with a SSD, and then installed the HDD into the 2nd bay.
Computer has been running fine since these changes, aside from running hot when gaming.
2 days ago:
I upgraded the SSD to a larger drive.
Then, I disassembled the laptop with the intent to apply some thermal compound and clean the fans to address the temperature issues.  I could not complete this task because 2 screws were stripped and I couldn't get the cover off, afterall.
I did not swap any connections, but did notice one seemed a bit loose after carefully lifting up the keyboard so I gently eased it back in to place.
I put the laptop back together, and that is when the power button and media center button issue began. So it must be a result of either opening the case or upgrading the SSD.
Any thoughts on what could be causing this to happen?
And if anyone has a trick to remove stripped screws without taking a drill to my laptop - I'd love to hear your ideas. Thanks!!

Thanks for your reply! Actually, yesterday I upgraded to the new kernel (version 3.4.3-1) and my laptop has not freezed since then. So, maybe I will wait for a couple of days and hopefully mark this as solved.

  • Toshiba Qosmio x505-q870 Issues

Hi, i'm a proud owner of this laptop and its served me very well for the past 3 years.
Recently i'm having some heat issues where i think the computer is starting to hang/freeze around 75c.  I've checked some other forums and folks say thermal shutdown is MUCH higher than that so i'm kinda curious at why its happening.  Naturally i've cleaned out all the vents, got a laptop cooler, got rid of as much bloatware, and minimized my HDD usage for as much efficiency as i can squeeze out of the machine.  Not too sure what the next step would be to try to minimize the heat.  At rest with the cooler fan i'm looking at 50c while during intense gaming 65-75c, which is where the freezing, BSOD, and other bad things occur.
I've also ugraded my RAM.  i bought 2 sticks of 4 gig Patriot PC3-12800 1600 MHz CL11 1.35v RAM, which are technically compatible as they are the same speed and size as the ram also sold via the Toshiba website.  My first game with the new RAM showed massive improvement in FPS.  However shortly into the next round it froze up where i needed to do a cold shutdown.  Thinking nothing of it, I restarted and began another game and the same thing happened again where it froze.  After that point i stopped to reassess my options.  Heat was also extremely high, but that was nothing out of the norm for my current situation.
After some quick research on what i shoud do, i ran Memtest86 which came back clean after 20 passes, updated my BIOs from v2.3 to v2.9, and tried to get into the BIOs to try to change the voltage being sent into the RAM.  My old ram had 1.5v while the new ones were at 1.35v.  I ran the program cpu-z to see what voltage it was being run at, and it was set at 1.28v so apparently there's something going on.  Unfortunately in the BIOs i couldnt find how to change the voltage settings, so i'm currently at a loss what to do.  Some more reading has brought to my attention that the fans might not also be working at full capacity.  I also tried to see how i can adjust my fan speeds in the BIOs and again came to a loss.
What do i do to try to minimize my heat burden and try to get my RAM integrated smoothly?

  • Toshiba Qosmio x505 Q870 problem.

I have just installed Battlefield 3 , and i was playing for a while untill my screen went off.
when the screen turned off i was able to hear a loud sound from the laptop might be caused by either the DVD or by some fan inside (I am not sure)
i tried to normally press the shutdown button (Physical touch button on the left side of my keyboard) and then i tried holding it down for a few seconds to force shotdown more than once.
    nothing happened.
I also tried also to press the button NUM LOCK and there was no response.
After a while 10~50mins i found the laptop on the login to windows account screen , and then i logged in and typed in this post
This was the first time such a thing ever happens with me , and i am looking for any explanations and suggestions

I just updated my Video card , and then i started playing BFBC2 with a heat monitoring program on.
CPU cores were at 94 (MAX)
and the GPU were at 70 (MAX).
I am a little bit worried and i would appreciate it to know what did happen exactly

  • Qosmio X505 - Q870 Freezing Problem PLS HELP !!!

    hello everyone
    i have toshiba qosmio x505 q870 with nvidia gts 360m. core i7 q720 @1.6
i have this strange problem .. the laptop freezes recently alot that im not being to use it, it happens not in particular situation .. it may happen in any time in anything you are doing. last time happened, i was logging in.
i wish to know whats the problem .. after freezing the only thing that i can do is ahard shut down by keep pressing the power button.
i tried mem test to check the rams .. no errors i have 8gb ram.
i tried scanning the hard disk for bad sectors .. also nth, i have 128 gb ssd
( the laptop came with 500gb hitachi 7200rpm, i added SSD 128gb Kingston later )
and another 500gb seagate 7200 rpm.
i tried replacing rams .. still happening.
i used the laptop without battery only on power still happening.
i used the battery alone also happened.
i changed the windows copy yes it freezed.
some times when it happens i take off the battery and take of the rams and keep pressing the power button to reset the laptop thing about electricity, thats what they told me .
Then it will happen but after awhile. one time i did this thing:
i disassembled the laptop with eveything out and did a cleaning for eveyrhing ( bearing in mind it wasnt full of dust or anything it was clean ) and then reinstalled everything in place.
    That was a while ago..
After that it took awhile before rehappening, something about a month . and one time happened during the installtion of windows =S
i tried eveything .. i updated all the drivers, uninstall reinstall, i did a recovery i did eveything with no results no over heating problems
i asked the support center and they didnt figure out whats causing. they did not figure out the problem soo... to show me that they are a good costumer care center they told me that they want to replace :
    1. motherboard 280 $
    2. graphic card 600 $
    3. 2 x 4 gb ram 100 $
    4. HDD 70 $
the laptop is out of warranty and im sure i wont do such a thing ..
all of that to be replaced just because they did not figure out.
and im the one whos gonna cry !
im sure that this solution is not the right one.
i tried four different HDD same result and as i mentioned .. one of them was during the installation of windows during the recovery ...
i almost tried eveything i tried to run with one memory module, then the other module, and see if either provides more stability. For clarity, let's call one RAM 1 and the other RAM 2. and i have two slots; call them slot 1 and slot 2. Try RAM 1 in slot 1 with slot 2 empty. If that does not allow the system to work well, try RAM 1 in slot 2 with slot 1 empty. If that does not provide more stability, try RAM 2 in slot 1 with slot 2 empty. If that still is not stable, try RAM 2 in slot 2 with slot 1 empty. still freezing =(
    Plus .. i tried 8 different rams modules 1 in 1 , 1 in 2, 2 in 1, 2 in 2 and goes on .. etc .. still freezing .. i tried eveything humanty can do ..
i guess im gonna buy a robot and let him set, think, work, and figure out whats causing ..
after all im guessing its sth about electricity .. i think thats theres atiny black thing in the motherboard causing loose or giving more static or delivering more or less electricity to some parts or anything like this .
who knows ... my humanty after i did all that made think like this .. or lets say its BY LOGIC .. Please Anyone can Help ... !!
anyone can help =( im disperate

A FIX THAT WORKS SO FAR!
I have a x505 - q870 myself and have had problems with freezing for a long time - till a few days ago, it began to freeze at random times even 15 minutes after boot, making the laptop unusable. I use a cooling pad, and that didn't help either. I thought it maybe a corrupt OS, bad memory or a heating problem.
I found this toshiba form post and on advice decided to unseat and reseat the CMOS battery. WARNING: this takes time and patience, you have to disassemble the entire laptop to get to the motherboard. I'll attach an X505 service manual that I found a while ago.
While getting to the CMOS battery, I also discovered that the fans had a carpet layer of dust/lint covering the rear vents (after 2 years heavy travel and use). I cleaned these out (with air), unseated and reseated the battery, and reassembled the laptop. You will have to update system time on first boot. VOILA! I have had the laptop working for two days now, no freezing yet! I am guessing a couple of reasons:
    1. Hard resetting the motherboard did something magical - worth a try.
    2. Cleaning dirt blocking vents under the motherboard definitely helped heating issues. You may not have this problem. But in any case, do you use a cooling pad?
If you are out of warranty (like me) and have some technical knowledge, I suggest you give this a try. Since I did this I have not had a freeze yet after constant use! This after having repeated freezes every hour of use is definitely an improvement.

  • Dell Vostro and iTunes [+media control buttons]

    Hi everybody!
Well, I have a Dell Vostro 1310 laptop.
It has media control buttons, as you can see in these images:
    http://img134.imageshack.us/my.php?image=moto0388ha4.jpg
    http://img98.imageshack.us/my.php?image=moto0389iu3.jpg
    http://img91.imageshack.us/my.php?image=moto0390ep2.jpg
The fact is: the control buttons work properly IF, and only IF, iTunes is the active window.
If it is not, they simply don't work.
Is there anything I can do to solve it?

    Hi espectral,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I'm fairly sure you'd need dedicated software to interface with the keyboard and iTunes, most often 'media' keys only work by coicidence. Therefore, you'd need software from Dell (or other 3rd party software to link iTunes to the keyboard.)
I don't think Dell specifically support Apple Software, but I know some other brands like Logitech do.
    Hope that helps.
    Regards,
    Peter.

  • ACPI Flash BIOS version 2.60 Update Problem cause Blank Screen on Qosmio X505-Q870 HELP Needed!

I have a Qosmio X505-Q870 that I bought 3 months ago. I updated to ACPI Flash BIOS version 2.60 today, as suggested by the Toshiba installation tools. I ran the update in Windows 7( didn't know this is dangerous) and it successfully completed, before it shuts down normally. When I try ti turn it on, the power LED is on, but the screen is blank. I tried to turn it off by pressing the power button for 20 seconds, but the computer would not turn off. What should I do now?

  • [Solved] Random freezes on a Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q888

    Hi guys,
My laptop has been freezing randomly, about once per day, during the last 2 or 3 weeks. The system freezes completely, i.e. the display freezes, I cannot move the mouse, I cannot use the keyboard, the CAPS LOCK light starts blinking, and if there is any music playing, it enters an infinite loop of 2-3 seconds. I cannot use any keyboard combination such as Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch into a terminal. Then I have no choice but to press and hold the power button.
The freezes seem to happen in a completely random fashion, independently from what programs/applications I am running, for how long the computer has been on, how much memory I am using, CPU temperature, etc. Also, I cannot find any clue in the log files. Everything seems to be OK just before the freeze (except for some random, annoying, but apparently unrelated messages such as "[system] Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.Avahi': timed out"). The only clue is that the CAPS LOCK key is blinking during the freeze, which means... kernel panic?
I am running 64-bit Arch Linux on a Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q888. My current kernel is 3.4.2-2, but this has been happening since at least 3.3.7-1. I know another person with exactly the same laptop model as me, who is having the same issues. I am lost here. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your reply! Actually, yesterday I upgraded to the new kernel (version 3.4.3-1) and my laptop has not freezed since then. So, maybe I will wait for a couple of days and hopefully mark this as solved.

  • Toshiba Qosmio X505 plugged in, not charging message

I have a Toshiba Qosmio X505 that is almost 4 years old and have some power issues.  The battery is drained to about 6% and the battery icon in the tool bar has the plug symbol for a second then it goes away then comes back and goes away.... it keeps flashing like this.  When I move the mouse over the battery icon it says plugged in, not charging.  I have tried every solution I have found on line with no luck.  I have removed the battery and ac charger and then held the power button for 30 seconds, I have cleaned the connections, I have re-installed the battery about 10 times, I have rebooted all to no avail.
When I remove the ac adapter the power light is off and the battery light is orange.  When I remove the battery and plug in the ac adapter the power light is steady red.  As soon as I put the battery in the ac power light begins to blink on and off.  The computer does not power on with the battery removed and the ac adapter plugged in (but I'm not sure if it's supposed to). I will also add that in the last week or so when I power on I would get a black screen saying an NTFS file is bad and the machine wants to do a disk check.  The disk check never runs, even when I try to do it manually.
I have read this could be a motherboard issue, an ac adapter issue, or a battery issue.  I am hopoing a replacement battery fixes the problem.  Before buying a battery I was hoping someone had some info to share.  Thanks

I bought a battery hoping that takes care of the problem.  If that doesn't work I will try a new adapter and if that doesn't work I will probably just remove the hard drive and use it as an external on a new machine.  Seems there really isn't a whole lot of info out there about this problem other than the start button solution.

  • Media Controls for the Qosmio x505 q870

    Hi there,
I recently purchased the Qosmio X505 q870 machine, and it came with the side media center control panel. Everytime one of those buttons is pushed, a loud beep is produced, and even muting the speakers still causes this beep. I am wondering if there is anyway to remove this beep from the machine, and still keep the functionality of the media control panel.
    Thanks, Jesse.

    Thanks for pointing that out.

  • What happened to the Toshiba Qosmio x505??

What happened to the Toshiba Qosmio x505?
I have the x300 17" and I love it but need to upgrade.
It was on the website for  a week for a preorder and then it was gone and hasn't come back I was thinking of getting it from BB but now its gone.
Where is it,is it coming back and when?   I think its one of the best  18.4" Laptops out there overall.

Yeah, it really sucks.. The best laptop I can find at BB is the HP i7 for $1299.. Which has a really crappy trackpad and only a nvidia 230.. It was the *only* i7 cpu w/ 17"+ at my local BB.. I signed up for a $5000 BB card just to buy a new laptop, and now I can't find one I like. I'd buy the toshiba 505 in a heartbeat. Newbegg has them in stock, so if the toshiba doesn't appear at BB in the next couple weeks or so, I'm just gonna cancel this new BB card and buy it from newbegg, they have a 12mo 0% interest deal going on now too.

I reformat my laptop and didn't save the drivers (boohoo!).
I can't use the touchpad and tried installing both Alps and Synaptic but neither works.
Another problem is that the Media Control Buttons (located beside the Power Button) are not lit.
I use the Media Buttons yesterday but when I turn the laptop on today, it wasn't lit.
Please help! I don' know what to do anymore...

    Hi
You could try to setup the multimedia button using the TOSHIBA Button Support.
The application in +Program Files\Toshiba\TBS\Backlight.exe+ controls the illumination

  • Re: Satellite A305-S6872 media control buttons driver?

Ok, so I just got this laptop on Sunday.
It has the media control buttons on it, but they won't work.
I've read a few posts about it, saying that I need to download the Control driver..
Well, I spent hours last night looking for it. :\
Anyone have the direct link to it?

    Hallo Kitsune
Try to reinstall Value added Package. You can download it from Toshiba support page. If you have US notebook model please visit http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_modSel.jsp
    Hallo Glead
In users manuals is described that this button is not for 2 functions but just for one. Either for MUTE or for enabling/disabling the LEDs. I have Satellite A300 too and this button is for disabling LEDs only.
Have a look into this symbol and you will see it is not speaker but symbol for light.
Compare it with symbol on ESC button and you will see it is not the same.
