Tracing iTunes Shared Library

Hello Apple People,
Im managing a large number of apple computers, and have recently noticed that some clients have some questionable material that they are sharing in their iTunes library.
I was wandering how do you track down the user who is supplying the shared library. I have started scanning Port 3689, which allows iTunes sharing between Macs, but if there is some temporary file being stored somewhere that gives perhaps an MAC address, or even an IP, that would be better.
Thanks

macmenno,
I just read this post and I'm wondering if you can helpme in my problem - I'm completely stumped!
Below is pasted from my post:
"Apple techs, I've posted this topic before and no one has been able to solve - I believe it's a bug in the program.......
All my macs are running 10.4.7, QT 7.1.3, itunes 7 (problem happened with QT 7.1.2, itunes 6.+)
I'm sharing my itunes songs in my MDD G4(host). I access my g4's shared library from my other mac's either via ethernet or wireless (home LAN).
I have discovered that I cannot play ANY songs that have been encoded as mp3 joint stereo. My mp3's were encoded this way because this was my previous itunes versions (itunes 3 I think) default encoding setting.
When I access my hosts itunes shared library from one of my 'client' macs and view my mp3 joint stereo files, I first notice that they have a 'QuickTime movie file(remote)' in the Kind property list.
They do not list this way on the host - they list on the host as MPEG audio file.
Then when I try to play a mp3 joint stereo file, I get a short spinning rainbow, the song does not play and the play head just doesn't move.
All other song files play, non-joint stereo mp3's, AAC, protected(purchased)songs, videos, etc.
Apple itunes tech's PLEASE CHIME IN HERE - I need an expert to examine this issue, I haven't been able to figure this one out and I cannot share/play my music on to my other macs....
BIG THANKS!"
macmenno, I hope you can help - THANKS!!!

  • HT5922 Volume control Itunes Shared Library from Macbook air played through iPad

    Hi everyone,
I am using iPad Air to airplay through use of iTunes shared library from Macbook, to Play to my Apple TV using the Remote App from apple on the iPad.
I noticed that the swipe up control screen volume control does not affect the volume on my speakers of the Denon which is perfectly connected with apple tv. The only thing which controls the volume is the Denon volume control.
The iTunes  volume control on the Macbook also do not work with Apple TV when airplaying
I assume this is because of the Denon Reciever, but would like to hear if others who are connecting directly without a multimedia amplifier and speakers are also unable to raise volume using itunes control or not?
Thans in advance for any feedback given.

I think this may be a clue to the problem. When you purchased the MBA did you restore any of your personal data from a prior backup? In particular, did you restore any prior data in the Music folder?
Or, did you simply launch iTunes and enable iTunes Match?

  • Itunes Shared Library between Mac and Windows isn't sharing videos properly

Hi, I'm a bit new to the mac world, but I'm the proud owner of a new macmini. I also own a Windows 7 machine.
My problem is with the Itunes Shared library. Itunes 10 on my mac is set up to share everything, including podcasts. I can see these from Itunes 10 on Windows, and I can play music (and audio podcasts), but video is hit or miss.
Videos downloaded from Itunes U tend to work, lectures and stuff.
Video podcasts (also downloaded from Itunes Store) and other videos don't work at all. Itunes just doesn't play the video, and doesn't even launch the "black screen". The timer remains at 0.00.
On the other hand, sharing videos from the PC to Mac works well, i.e. my mac can see the contents of the itunes shared library on Windows and play videos. It just doesn't work the other way around.
Thanks for reading and I hope this problem can be fixed.

  • TS2972 I can see the song titles in itunes shared library on my new imac  but songs will not play. I have a pc with wifi network that the main music library is on. tried saving songs from pc to an external drive then to new mac but thats not working eithe

attempted to transfer itunes music from pc to new imac. didn't work. apple suggest using sharing method. main library of music is on pc. did those steps and shared library shows up on mac but when you click on the song to play it doesn't play or maybe ther is no content? any suggestions?

    Hi there,
It sounds like your purchased content is not transfering via a flash drive. It may be easier to re-download this contnet directly from iTunes. Take a look at the article below for mor information.

  • Vista and iTunes shared library - Admin vs. Standard User

Here's a good one.....I am the administrator of the family's Vista desktop computer, my kids are Standard Users. When I log in to the computer and bring up iTunes, I am able to see and access our shared library of music on our Synology DS207+ NAS. When either of my kids log in and bring up iTunes, the DiskStation appears on the left side underneath 'shared' but when they click on it, they are not able to access the music. A dialog box appears with the following message: 'the shared library "Disk Station" is not responding (-39). Check that any firewall software running on either the shared computer or this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689.'
Their Standard User accounts can access the music on the NAS through mapped drives and windows explorer.
I am running CA (Computer Associates) Security Center and the firewall has the same rules in place for all of our logins. Here is the strange thing, when I change their account type from Standard User to Administrator, they are able to access the shared library of music, no more dialog box with that message. I change their account type back to Standard User and again, they are not able to access the music, and they get that message again.
When I am logged in and enter the 'netstat' command, I see the following entry under foreign address:
    NAS:3689 Established
When the kids are logged in, I see the following:
    NAS:microsoft-ds Established
I've tried a lot of different things, too numerous to even remember or mention, all with no success. Some troubleshooting measures include:
    - change the kids permissions to the music folder on the DiskStation from read only to read/write.
    - disabled (not uninstalling) tcpip v6.
    - tried every combination of new firewall rule, to include ports 3689, 5353 and every port (and range) in between.
    - file and printer sharing is off on the administrator account, and is off on the standard user(s) accounts, but enabling it does not allow access to the library.
    - uninstalled Bonjour but once I do that, I cannot see the shared library anymore.
    - upgraded Bonjour to the latest version but still no success.
If anybody reading this has other suggestions, please respond.

I actually followed this, but I still had problems that I listed above. Is there any way that when you make changes to one account (even if there is only one main account where changes are made), the changes are automatically (or at least easily) applied to the other user accounts?

  • Help with iTunes Shared Library (Vista and OS X)

I am trying to share my Vista-based iTunes library with my new iMac. I have an issue now that iTunes does not let me select the shared iTunes library that resides on the PC. The following is how things are set up
    1) I've moved all of my PC-based music, my iTunes Library (.itl) file and the cover art to an external HD on my Vista PC.
    2) I've set permissions on all of the Vista files (music, library, art) to be read/write for available to all connected users.
    3) I have also mounted the PC-based external drive on my iMac. Permissions seem to be ok, as when I view files via the Finder, they are visable and accessible.
    4) However, when I try to open iTunes on iMac to change the shared library (using the OPTION key), the iTunes Library.itl file on the hard drive is completely greyed out. No matter how I change permissions or sharing on the Vista machine, I cannot seem to select the shared library.
    5) Interesting that I HAVE successfully accessed the same library through another Windows-based machine (Windows XP). In that instance I can access the network drive and select the iTunes Library.itl file no problem. Music streams fine after I do that. Also, from my iMac I am able to create files in the same directory where the iTunes files reside (using program like Text Editor) so it seems I do have write access and permissions to the directory.
Any clue why this is happening? It seems like iTunes is the one program that is not picking up the permissions from the iMac, but other Mac programs are. It's driving me a little nuts at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thx

    Bump. Same issue. Help please.

  • ITunes shared library on Buffalo Linkstation NAS

    Hi all
I've recently put in a Buffalo NAS, which has an onboard media server. iTunes can see it fine and to begin with, it worked superbly.
After making a couple of network changes this weekend (put a fixed IP on one of the computers and moved all my music folders around on the NAS...), iTunes can still see the contents of the shared library but can't play anything from it. Exclamation points all over the place.
I've tried renaming the NAS and mapping it to a different network drive letter in the hope that iTunes would be fooled but it isn't. Anyone have any ideas?
I'd also mention that the situation is the same for all the computers on the network, including the ones that have iTunes installed but no local library.
    Help very much appreciated!

thanks, i've only just installed and copied the files over so this would seem not to apply.
I checked on my son's PC and looked at the shared library from my MAC and I can see all content, i think this is a Buffalo DNLA server issue.

  • Spotty iTunes Shared Library Connection

I continue to have problems sharing my iTunes library between my PC and laptop (both Dells with Windows Vista). My entire collection is on my PC, but I prefer using my laptop as a mobile music library. However, at random times my PC library disappears from the "Shared" list in iTunes on my laptop. My anti-virus is set to allow port 3689 & most of the time it works fine. I am just wondering why I can not keep my connection consistent.

I have the same problem. Very inconsistent sharing, I have tried it between 3 computers. An old Dell laptop running XP, a 15" MBP running leopard, and an old 15" Powerbook G4 also running leopard. Sharing works fine between the Macs, but I can't get anything to work reliably between the PC and either Mac. I'm using iTunes 8.2.1 on all 3 machines. I tried reinstalling bonjour and iTunes on the PC with no luck. Also checked the firewalls, etc. and everything should be open for iTunes sharing. I've had this issue for about 6 months and I keep hoping the next iTunes release will fix it. My faith in Apple's "it just works" mantra is beginning to wear thin...

  • ITunes Shared Library Password

Sometime ago, I created a 'Shared Library' of all my music and password protected it.
I have lost / forgotten the password. Now I cant access the shared library. Is there a way to recover/change the password to the shared library or delete the existing library and set up a new shared library?
    FYI:
The shared library was set up on iTunes 9 via a Windows XP machine.
The shared library shows on the 'Shared' list, but can't access due to password issue.
    Hope someone can help.

If you are using home sharing within iTunes then you should be using your iTunes account and password to enable the sharing. I've used it to copy iTunes purchases and my copied CDs between computers.

  • Refreshing iTunes Shared Library

I'm wondering if there's a way to refresh Shared Libraries in iTunes?
When I import new songs onto one of my home computer's libraries, it can take days or weeks for its library to update on my other computers.
Say, I import a new CD into computer A's iTunes. When I look at Computer A's shared library from computer B, that CD doesn't appear for days.
My guess is that iTunes sets up a cache for shared libraries, and that there's a way to refresh that cache. Anyone have any ideas?

How are you "sharing"? Are you using the iTunes Sharing feature? Or do you just have both copies of iTunes pointed to the same library location on a shared drive?
If the latter, iTunes does not at present have any feature for watching folders and automatically importing tracks you add to a folder. So using strictly iTunes, you'll have to add any such tracks manually, by dragging them to the iTunes window or by using the Add To Library command. Here are a couple of potential solutions from other developers, though:

  • Streaming iTunes (shared library) video over ethernet...

I'm hoping someone with combined iTunes and networking savvy might be willing to help me out here. Here's the setup,
I have an Intel iMac hooked up to Fantom 1TB drive via USB 2.0 (iTunes library on external). The iTunes library is shared to an iBook G4 over ethernet via a Linksys Wireless B router (but both comps are wired in for max speed). (To be clear, when I say 'shared' I mean that I open iTunes on the iBook with it's own library and select the shared iMac library from within the iTunes GUI). When I go to play videos over the shared library on the iBook they are quite choppy and slow and I'm wondering where the bottleneck is.
I'm using Cat5e cable (1000Mbs+ so far as I can gather), but the router ports are 10/100 as is the ethernet port on the iBook (max 100Mbs). Further, the iBook has only 32MB of VRAM (although I've upgraded the RAM to 1.12GB). The iMac is running Leopard 10.5.5, iBook running Tiger 10.4.11, both machines running iTunes 8.0.1. I'm presuming that the read and transfer rates of the external are not the issue here because there are no problems viewing on the iMac, but I could be wrong.
So is the bottleneck the 10/100 ethernet ports on the router/iBook, the iBook VRAM, or is there something inherent in iTunes library sharing itself that is causing the delays? I also have an Xbox 360 which reads the same shared library via Rivet/Connect360 over the same network and router and videos are fine on the Xbox which makes me think the problem is with the iBook or iTunes.
I ask because I'm considering upgrading the router, and even replacing the iBook, but if it's something to do with iTunes itself, then there's not much point.
Thanks to any and all who can offer advice.

This evening I tried to narrow down the problem further and I think it boils down to the iBook not being able to process the video data fast enough rather than the transfer rate over the network or something inherent in iTunes.
To do this I shared my library folder on the network and copied a file from it to the iBook's HDD, adding it also to iTunes locally on the iBook. The quality is the same whether I view it:
    1) Through the iTunes GUI 'SHARED' library over the network
    2) By opening it directly (using Quicktime) over the network through the mounted shared folder in finder
    3) Viewing it in Quicktime directly from the iBook's internal HDD
    4) Viewing it locally in iTunes from the iBook's HDD
Now the question is whether the iBook should be able to view this video smoothly given its hardware, or do I have the logic board VRAM problem that I've been reading about...I guess an issue for another post/topic.
Thanks for trying to help Tom.

  • Can an iTunes shared library be 'loaded' using applescript

When looking at iTunes shared libraries they either have a triangle on the left of the library name or not. If you click on the library name then the triangle appears if it wasnt there before. This may take some time to happen and whilst it is going on iTunes states that the library is being 'loaded'.
If the library isnt loaded then i get an error -1728 if i try any access to it, otherwise i can access the library without problems.
Is there a way of 'loading' the library using AS ?
This script illustrates and the open statement doesnt work but was my attempt to load the source
    set shared_library to "iBook Music"
    tell application "iTunes"
set source_list to (get every source)
set source_names to (get name of every source)
    try
set playlist_count to (count of playlists of source shared_library)
    on error errMsg number errNum
    if errNum is -1728 then
log "* The source is not 'loaded'"
    open source shared_library
    else
    log "* " & errMsg & errNum
    end if
    end try
    end tell

Yes, although there are a couple of things to check and do.
First of all, when the iPod is connected to iTunes, look on the Device/iTunes U pane and make sure that Sync iTunes U is ticked ON and that the options below the tick-box are set as you want them. (Mine are automatically include all items of all collections.)
After the Sync has finished, look on the iPod:
audio - under Playlists/iTunes U. (No, I've no idea why they should be only there...)
    video - under Video Playlists/iTunes U or Video/Video Playlists/iTunes U. (Still no idea why...)
One point to note, if the video is in a format that the iPod cannot play, then of course, you won't find it on the iPod, but if you have set it to Sync to the iPod, you should see a message at the end of the Sync process informing you that they haven't been transferred.

  • ATV2 can't see iTunes shared library

I have spent hours reading forums and trying many different settings and am about to return my AppleTV.  I have tons of movies converted for viewing on the AppleTV but I feel I have wasted to many hours of my life and am about to give up.
    Here is my setup:
Dell XPS Desktop connected to router by ethernet, Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop connected via WAN - both running latest version of iTunes (10.2.1) Both running Windows 7 Professional (32 bit)
AppleTV2 (connected wireless - current firmware)
iPod Touch (3rd generation - current iOS)
Home Sharing enabled on all devices with the same user/password
    D-Link DIR-655 router
    McAfee Security-as-a-Service Firewall/Anti-Virus
Right now, I have been only working on my desktop PC - I figure if I get that going, I can do the same to my laptop to get it going as well...
I have opened up the recommened ports on my software firewall.
I've briefly opened the ports on my router.  (closed them again as I don't want those ports open to the 'world')
I've checked that iTunes is allowed to access internet through firewall
I completely uninstalled McAfee and tried with windows firewall turned off.
I have reset my router to factory conditions with minimal user settings
    I have reinstalled iTunes
    I have reinstalled Bonjour service...
Can't think of anything else to try
My iPod is able to communicate with the ATV2.  I can 'stream' from iPod to ATV2 no problem.  However, I keep the movies on my desktop and want that to be the main media source.  Also - on the 2 PC's, I haven't ever seen the other's Shared Library in iTunes.  If I turn off iTunes and reload, I can briefly see my library on the ATV2 and iPod... but only for a minute or 2 and then it disappears.  Does anybody see any glaring thing I have forgotten?  I'm at my wit's end... please help!!!

I too have not been getting any sleep because of this. The main reason why I bought ATV2 is because everyone told me it's plug and play, always works. That is bull !!! I hope you can help me out, and that I can get some decent sleep for once, long hours troubleshooting this !!!
Turned Home Sharing On and Off many times on both ends
Hardwired both HTPC (running iTunes) & ATV2 to my router
    Router is a DLINK DIR-615
Added IP for ATV2 to DMZ in router for unresticted access
Tried Home Sharing with and without DONE button pressed
    Have latest iTunes 10.x
Tried enabling/disabling "Share Library on Network" under Preferences
Only 2 things left to try:
Open the recommended ports 3689 (TCP) & 5353 (UDP) in XP on my HTPC (running iTunes)
Replace my D-Lilnk router with another model
I really hope someone out there can help me out. I was hoping this would be plug&play easy
Thanks so much for your time !!!
    Neil
