Thanks in advance.Are you saying you will only have one database? Are your sql statements atomic? If they are just use sql server and JDBC with autocommit on. If not, you can still just use sql server and jdbc and turn autocommit off, and explicitly control the transactions yourself. If your app is a web application, you can probably use the web container to control the transactions.
If you are going to have more than one database, or a database and another datasource, then you'll have to look at a transaction manager or application server. If you do, you'll have to have the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator running as well.

  • How to reduce transaction log in SQL Server 2000

    Dear All gurus/experts,
    I need your help. The problem is that the time to take to reduce transaction log in SQL server 2000 when I use shrink method. Are there another way to do that beside shrink database (right click : all tasks --> shrink database) ?
    I appreciate your answers. TIA
    Rgds,

    Hi Steve,
    Is this for a test system or a production system?
    For a test system, as per Ad's post, setting the recovery model to simple should do the trick.
    For a production system, I'd recommend you leave the recovery model at full and set up transaction log backups. This will keep the log file at a reasonable size and you will gain point in time recovery (eg if you back up the logs on an hourly basis, you can recover the database to the last log backup, meaning you would never lose more than an hour's work).
    Kind Regards,
    Owen

  • XA and MS SQL Server 2000

    I am currently working on a project that proposes to use XA transactions with MS
    SQL Server 2000. I have been searching for information on this subject and have
    found information that worries me with regard to MS SQL Server 6.5 and XA transactions.
    The information I have gathered argues against using MS SQL Server 6.5 with XA
    transactions, mainly because it allows only 1 active transaction at a time.
    Does anyone have any information as to whether MS SQL Server 2000 has the same
    problem? I am thinking of suggesting a different XA RM as I have found no information
    stating the contrary.
    Many Thanks,

    Mick;
    I have already tried SQL Server with Tuxedo, and believe: it´s works, but I still
    try it using Tuxedo with a big load.
    The file attached has two source files with a short comments explain how to do,
    and what to do.
    If you prefer, I can send you the MSVC++6 Project

  • WL 6.0 using MS SQL Server 2000 - Transaction timeout when invoking stored procedure

    Hi,
    Facing a problem on WL6.0. We are connecting to MS SQL server 2000 using a stateless
    session bean
    using container managed transaction. The bean method does a few updates to the
    database and also
    calls a stored procedure that generates primary keys many times. This stored procedure
    (SP) is running
    in a transaction of its own since it has to increment a counter, update the database
    and then return the
    primary key.The primary key generator SP is working fine and does not lock the

    In some methods we find that the primary key generator SP has locked the database.
    We
    then see a lock on the database created due to this SP in the MS SQL client. The

  • SQL Server 2000 - Before Commiting the transaction.

    Hi All,
    I am using CF7 along with SQL Server 2000.
    And I am in a situation where I need to update some set of data to make sure that the changes are getting reflected in the front end.
    My approach is like, trying some update statements inside "Begin Tran" block.
    It goes like this,
    begin tran
    update table1 set field1='value' where cond='condition';
    And I am just refreshing my application (in the browser). But unusually it takes a bit time to load, and no records are being pulled out after that..
    My question is, do I need to perform a "Commit" to avoid this hanging kinda behaviour?.
    Any ideas?.

    I'm not sure I fully understand your issue, but I suspect that you will need to commit the transaction before that changes will be available to your web site.  If your changes are in one UPDATE statement a transaction isn't usually required since this is a single statement.  Database transactions are intended to group multiple SQL statements into a single block so that all changes will succeed or all will fail.
    Please post your CF and SQL code and the steps to re-create your issue.

  • Query Locks Table in SQL Server 2000!!

    Hi all!
    I am facing a strange problem. I am using MS SQL Server 2000.
    I have a JDBC program.It executes a query on a table (STUDENT) and fetches some record from it.
    The query gets executed fine for the first time but when the SELECT query is executed on the same table (i.e. STUDENT) from some other block of code within the same program the program hangs at the location where resultset is pointed to the first record i.e. RS.next();
    When I try to execute the SELECT query on the same table (i.e. STUDENT) from a query tool when the program is running it also gets hanged!!!
    It seems that after running the query for the first time on the STUDENT table from the next time its getting hanged....i believe the Table gets locked for some reason!!
    Is that normal with SQL Server 2000.....The same code works fine with other database!
    Please suggest...wht has to b done to gt it fixed!
    Thankz a loadz bforehand!
    Arun

    By default (transaction isolation level TRANSACTION_READ_COMMITTED ), SQL Server applies a shared read lock when you do a SELECT. This is should not prevent other selects on the same row / page but it will prevent updates / deletes.
    I found a link that explains SQL Server locking: http://databasejournal.com/features/mssql/article.php/3289661

    btncontacts.setText("NEXT");
    btnkeywords.addActionListener(new ActionListener()
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)

    ResultSet.CONCUR_UPDATABLE);
    ResultSet rs = cstatement.executeQuery();
    while (rs.next())
    surname = rs.getString("Lastname");
    cstatement.getMoreResults();
    catch (Exception e)

    e.getMessage();
    // populate the fields;
    private void populateFields()
    txtfirstname.setText(name);
    txtsurname.setText(surname);
    }

    ummm ok i think the logic in your code is kinda screwy...
    here is what your should be doing.
    create the gui.
    get the resultset...
    have code that looks like this for nextRecord...
    protected void displayNextRecord(){
      // we do not call next here because we already called it last time
      surname = rs.getString("Lastname");
      name = rs.getString("Firstname");
      populateFields();
      if(!rs.next(){
        btncontacts.setEnabled(false);// i'm not sure what btncontacts is but we want to disable next becuase there are no more records...
    // in your intitalization code you need to do this...
    // you old stuff ending with...
    ResultSet rs = cstatement.executeQuery();
    // the new stuff...
    if(rs.first()){
      displayNextRecord();
    }else{
      btncontacts.setEnabled(false);//the result set is empty
    }ok the real problem you are having is that you are trying to display one record at a time but you are scrolling
    through the entire result set using while(rs.next()... what you
    want to do is create the result set once and scroll through
    it one item at a time with your gui.
    the example method i have given displays the data from the current
    row in your gui. then it advances the result set forward one row if possible. this method assumes that the result set will always
    be positioned on a valid row thus the need for calling
    rs.first() before we originally call displayNextRecord()
    well i hope you find this helpful.

    Hello,
    Did you made sure no transactions like restore logs  were running when you stopped SQL server service or agent .I have seen in SQL 2000 an abrupt stop of SQL Server agent when its doing a process can sometimes force database in suspect mode.
    I would like you to get your disk analyzed by vendor ASAP for any fault in disk at first go it seems to me an underlying hardware issue.
    Please can you check errorlog and event viewer to find out any possible cause for database going into suspect mode
    I always suggest to use Backup and restore method of recovery to get out from suspect database problem.If you dont have then you can move with DBCC Checkdb and various repair options but be sure
    DATA LOSS might be possible when you use repair allow data loss and repair_rebuild removes constraints.
    hope this helps

    Hello,
    I am trying to set up a connection pool & data source for SQL server 2000 (MSDE 2000).
    Here is what I attempted to do:
    I have a pool data source in a jar file called poll.jar and I copied it to C:\sun\Appserver\lib (Install dir\lib)
    com.microsoft.mspool.PoolDataSource is the pool data source class.
    In the Admin console, JDBC>Connection pools. Selected NEW and made the following entries.
    GENERAL SETTINGS
    Name: MsPool
    Datasource class name : com.microsoft.mspool.PoolDataSource
    Resource type: javax.sql.DataSource
    POOL SETTINGS: default values
    CONNECTION VALIDATION: default values

    NetworkProtocol:tcp
    DatabaseName: myDB
    Password:User specific
    user:User specific
    server: localhost

    I get the following error when I ping:
    Operation 'pingConnectionPool' failed in 'resources' Config Mbean. Target exception message: Class name is wrong or classpath is not set for : com.microsoft.mspool.PoolDataSource.
    Can any one help me if have a solution?
    Thanks in advance.

    You need to copy your jar to ${AS_INSTALL}/domains/domain1/lib/ext (replace domain1 by your
    domain). Another option is to leave the jar in ${AS_INSTALL}/lib and add a entry in the classpath-suffix element of your domain.xml.

  • Using MS Sql Server 2000 with Flex 2

    help! - I'm trying to understand how I could use Flex 2 (with
    the Flex Data Services) using MS SQL Server 2000 as my RDMS.
    Currently using SS with ASP. Basically, what do I need in
    terms of server set up (e.g. do I need to install the J2EE Server
    for instance?). How about using transaction based storedprocedures
    with flex.
    I'm having difficulty finding a clear answer (for me anyway!)
    to my question. I have even phoned Adobe last Thursday to ask them
    - and their expert was not around and they said would call me
    back... hmm.

    Hi Michael,
    At this time SQL Server 2000 is not certified for WLCS 3.5. Since the
    schema has changed between 3.2 and 3.5, running the 3.2 scripts is not a
    good idea.
    I can tell you that certification is in progress for SQL Server 2000. Your
    best bet is to contact your Sales Representative to get an idea of when
    certification might be coming.
    I hope this helps.

  • Manipulate data of a SQL SERVER 2000 database

    Problem:
    I need to manipulate data of a SQL SERVER 2000 database that it’s installed in a Windows
    from an oracle 8.1.7 database that is installed in a red hat linux server.
    This access has to be made in a procedure created in this Oracle instance.
    The Solution’s Environment:
    - oracle 8.1.7 database - red hat linux server - ORCL INSTANCE
    - SQL SERVER 2000 version 5.0 database - Windows server - SQLSERV INSTANCE
    - Oracle 8.1.7 database - windows 2000 professional server - HSDB INSTANCE
    We did the following steps:
    1) We installed an oracle database 8.1.7 in the windows 2000 professional.
    The name of this instance is HSDB.
    2) We configured the HSODBC resource in this HSDB instance so as to access the SQLSERVER database.
    3) It was created a database link in the ORCL instance (LINUX) so as to access the oracle HSDB instance
    4) It was created a procedure in the ORCL instance that insert data into the SQLSERVER database using the database link.
    This procedure pass through the following instances:
    ORCL Instance (database link) => HSDB Instance (HS Resource) => SQLSERV Instance
    5) When I execute this simple procedure of the ORCL Instance, the process takes a long time. Although if I run this insert on a SQL Plus, the transaction ends fast. Why it’s happening?
    PROCEDURE PRC_TESTE(P_CD_CMC7 IN VARCHAR2) IS

    I modified the PRC_TESTE procedure and worked fine when I made the following change.
    In spite of using the P_CD_CMC7 parameter on the INSERT command, I included a fixed value. Althoug I can´t use this fixed value. What it can be?
    Example:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE PRC_TESTE(P_CD_CMC7 IN VARCHAR2)

    EXCEPTION
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('ERRO NO INSERT '||SQLERRM);

    As announced in article: Database Architecture: Federated vs. Clustered-An Oracle White Paper March2002, "...According to Michael Otey, Senior Technical Editor, SQL Server Magazine:Technically, this setup isnt a true clustered implementation. According to Microsoft, SQL Server wont support true clustering until the post-SQL Server 2000 release, code named Yukon.(Yukon is not expected to be shipped until well into 2003.) - But when I browse msdn, there is nothing on the architecture itself.
    I am doing my Master's thesis on 9iRAC, and I need this information to complete my research. I found several Oracle white papers talking about federated vs. clustered architecture. As said in Response to "Reality behind Real

  • CMP Entity Bean's problem with MS-SQL Server 2000

    Hi everyone!
    I have a problem regarding CMP Entity Bean on OC4J.
    I made one CMP Entity Bean and deployed it to OC4J.
    It was successful.
    I used MS-SQL Server 2000 as Datasource.
    So, I installed MS-SQL Server's JDBC Driver and add some jar files to classpath.
    And I updated 'data-sources.xml' in OC4J's config directory.
    Then, I updated also 'orion-ejb-jar.xml' in my application's directory.

    Hi Young,
    From the information you have supplied, my guess is that the SQL
    string that OC4J is sending to SQL-Server is incorrect. So it may
    help if you could see the exact SQL string. In order to see the
    SQL string, I suggest you either run OC4J in "debug" mode, or try
    using "P6 Spy".
    The following web page has details on running OC4J in "debug" mode:
    http://kb.atlassian.com/content/atlassian/howto/orionproperties.jsp
    And here is the web page for "P6 Spy"
    http://www.provision6.com/
    And these other web sites may also be of help (in general):
    http://www.orionserver.com
    http://www.orionsupport.com
    http://www.atlassian.com
    http://www.elephantwalker.com
    Good Luck,
    Avi.
