Transfer hd video and photos from dslr

I have a Canon T3i DSLR that i shoot pics and HD video with. I travel alot and need to edit my photos and videos on the road. Even tho i have a first gen ipad which i LOVE....it's not great for photos, and i cant edit videos at all. So i am thinking of getting one of the new macbook airs that just came out today.
I WOULD go for the 11" high end model with 4G ram and 256 SSD flash drive.....but the only thing making me pause and think about the larger 13" version is that the 11" doesn't have an SD card slot.
I know i can get an external USB card reader and hook it up to the 11"....but would that be ALOT slower than transfering video and Photos on the 13" macook air by popping in the SD card into the slot? The new models both have thunderbolt....will thunderbolt SD card readers come out eventually?
If the ipad 2 transfered and edited HD video and photos, I'd nab that. But it doesn't.
If the 11" macbook air had an SD card slot, I'd nab that....but it doesn't.
ARGH! **** you Apple!!! Lol.
Even tho i have a big 65L Osprey backpack for travelling, I'd still like to pack as light as i can, since i will be treking all over the world. Cant check my backpack, but i have a smaller daypack for carry on to hold my camera and laptop.
The 13" and 11" macbook airs are both the same thickness. The 13" is only 1" wider and 1.5" deeper than the 11". So not TOO much bigger. The 13" is 2.9lbs while the 11" is 2.3lbs...so not a HUGE difference in weight.
So i guess it comes down to the SD card slot issue. Does anybody have experience with transfering video and photos to the 11" thru an external card reader? And if so, is the internal SD slot on the 13" ALOT faster when transfering? Or about the same? And lastly will thunderbolt card readers become available in the future u think?

Good to know that I am not the only one thinking about this. I currently have an 11" MBA. When purchasing I considered getting the 13" just because it had the SD card. However, smaller was more important to me. I have a canon 60D and I have transferred images using an external card reader and through a direct link to the camera - at the moment, neither are spectacular. I have also used a the SD card reader built into the iMac's - but even that appears slow with a 32Gb SDHC extreme card. I am hoping that the thunderbolt technology will lead to SD card readers - firewire and USB 3 have and since thunderbolt's transfer rates are ridiculous fast, taking advantage of it would appear obvious. However for the near term, I am looking into faster USB SD card readers. The best website that compares these, with every popular sd card imaginable, and on a Mac (as well as windows) is:

Until the first round of thunderbolt SD card readers become available, I will be holding off on the new 11" MBA - when they do... I will be itching to upgrade.

iCloud doesn't store movies or music. It only allows you to redownload purchases from the iTunes store if you ever lose them (assuming they are still available to redownload, and in the case of movies, that the studio permits it.) Also iCloud only stores your camera roll photos in your backup, which can only be accessed by restoring your iPad to the entire backup.
iCloud isn't designed to do what you are trying to do. iCloud is for syncing data across all your devices and for backing up your devices, not storing your data. You use iTunes on your computer for that. iTunes will add your purchased videos and music to your iTunes library so you can remove it from your iPad and add it back later if you want. MacBook Air does not turn on but does this damage it's hard drive ? Can I still save/ recover videos and photos from photo stream?

My MacBook Air was put on sleep mode and a couple of hours later I attempted to turn it on and no response. I called apple support and went through the process to try to power it back on and it would not turn on . Nothing would show on the screen and I heard nothing coming from my MacBook Air .
Is this because it overheated ? does this have to do with where it was charging and placed ? or is this because of battery/ power problems ?

Well on the Air models there really isn't a traditional hard drive, it is a SSD/Flash drive that is integral to the system and can't really be removed or connected to another Mac for retrieving of files. So yes if you take it in and they have to replace the Logic board, The Hart Of the System, then more then likely all your files will be gone.
That is one reason Apple includes Time Machine for Backing Up the system including your files. If you never used Time Machione then eventually, At Some Point In Time, you will Lose all your data. That is a fact of all computers.

Exporting videos and photos from iPhoto

I have upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks (Clean install) and downloaded the new iPhoto
but since then, when ever i try to export my videos, the program gives me Error message saying that "it can't copy the file".
and after deleting my photo library, and reuploading the photos and videos, MANY TIMES!!! i start facing a new problem:
the iPhoto was able to export the videos, but when i tried to play the videos i recieve error message "this video can't be opened"
of course i tried different programs and i got the same error; while the original files play normaly.
the other BIG problem, which i just noticed now, that iPhoto is deleting my GPS information from the photos after exporting them!!!!!
i had this MacBook Pro for a year, and i started to hate apple and MAC and I don't trust anything i do with it..
anybody can help me to fall in love with MAC again?!!?!

Thank you for taking the time and answering my question.
I decided to earse the disk, as i had so many problems with the laptop as it was extremly slow in almost everything.
and keep in mind that i only have Microsoft office 2011, and itune, iphoto, and recently i added Keynote, Numbers, Pages and ESET Cyber Security.
70% of my photos are still in an external hard drives as the original files, so i didn't backup them from the old version of iPhoto. The rest which i did back them up, i did through the Exporting option in iPhoto, using the settings as :
and that was ok, after doing the clean install of the OS, and upgrading to Mavericks, all the problems started with iPhoto.
For some reasons, iPhoto was refusing exporting the videos, and after different times of deleting the library and rebuilding it, iPhoto accepted to export the videos, unfortunately i didn't take a pitcure of the error message at that time. Now, this is what is going on:
It will export the videos and most of them they will have the icon of QuickTime, as not readable videos;

and when trying the VLC or iTune, they simply do nothing, like you never loaded any files in them.
and i have used the ! ? alot, as it was the only way to express my anger, as since i decided to by a MAC, i have never had a good easy peaceful day with it.

Recovering deleted video and photos from ipad or iphone

I deleted accidentally 3 Family videos from Hawaii plus some photos from my iPad. Now I am trying to recover them.
1st I stopped using the iPad so I would not overlap info.
2nd I did a backup on my MacBook into itunes
3rd I opened Finder, Go, then pressed alt to show the Library folder, Application support, MobileSync, Backup.
Picked the most recent backup and found all my files without any extensions.
copied them to another folder so I wouldn't mess with the originals. sorted them by size and added .mov and .jpeg to them.
the photos I recovered some but the videos only one that i forgot that I had deleted. Still the 3 most important Family videos I cant play.
Any ideas as to adding other type of extensions or I heard that they might be coded by mysql
Tried 2 recovery programs didn't work, no trace at all but the third trial program found them yet I am now reluctant to spend more $ for nothing.
Ideas to recover videos? please help, These steps might also help others for recovering just photos. Thank you!

I wonder if I updated it, would capture the deleted in less then 30 days items. but worry if the update may override some data.
If in two week I don't find a solution I will try the update to 8 (before the 30days). and keep playing with the backup. Again, Thanks for the advise.
