Transferring Data from old iMac to new iMac via Firewire

I am having difficulty transferring data from my old iMac to my new iMac via firewire. Per the instructions contained in migration assistant, when I hold down the letter "T" key during startup of the "old" mac the firewire symbol does not appear. Given that the firewire symbol does not appear I am unable to proceed with the transfer. Of note, my new Mac is the '09 24" iMac and my old iMac is the early 2006 model with the 17" screen. Incidentally, I am using the following cable contained in the attached link along with the adaptor (400) with respect to my old iMac.

Can anyone help?

Hi Todd
Not sure why that wouldn't work, but it could be that cable and adapter setup as the Early Core Duo only supports firewire 400.
You should try a 9 to 6 Pin Bilingual FireWire Cable:

I did the transfer two times, same thing. first time I used the WiFi

Second time also said that Paul'Mac already exist, Paul'Mac 2 created.
How can I get rid of first data trasnferred?
It will be using too much space on hard drive if Ileave it therre.

  • Moving files from old Mac to new one, via Firewire

I have an old G4, and recently bought a new iMac. I'm trying to transfer the files from my old computer to the new one via firewire (and I've also tried via ethernet cable). The G4 has two hard drives, one with system files, the other just used for data. When I connect the Macs by Firewire, with the G4 in Target mode, the iMac only recognizes the data hard drive. Is there a reason that anybody can think of why the system drive wouldn't show up?

FireWire Target Disk mode only connects to the master ATA drive on the ATA 0 bus; if there's nothing at that location, the computer will shut down instead.

  • Transferring Data From Old iMac to New iMac

I've tried searching the forums on this topic, and I can't find the exact answer I'm looking for.
I just got my 20" iMac CoreDuo and I'm trying to transfer Data from my old 17" iMac G4. I've got the two computers hooked up through Firewire and I was running the file transfer from the initial set-up, but it seems to have froze up on me. I have a lot of data, my G4 iMac is pretty much full and it showed about 6 hours of transfer time.
I guess my question is, how can I keep my new iMac from going to sleep in order to finish the data transfer? If I can't do this, what other ways can I get all my files over to my new computer?
    Thanks in advance...
    17" iMac G4, 20" iMac CoreDuo   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

hey, i just finished transferring files and i have pretty much the same set up. Moved 35GB from imac G4 to the 2GHZ intel mac, via firewire. FYI, upon the initial transfer it states an approx completion time and amount to transfer. The time is FAR from the actual move. Mine stated 2 hours and about 30 minutes I think. The transfer was complete in about 20-25 minutes. So don't go by that.

  • Transferring Data from old iMac G3 233Mhz with OS 8.6 to new Imac

Hi. I'm new to this forum. I have an old iMac ( one of the original Blueberries) which runs on OS 8.6. i have bits and pieces on this which I would quite like to transfer onto my new iMac which is a brand new intel based 24 inch 2.5Ghz. The old computer only has a 6GB hard drive and only 96mbs of Ram. The drive is CD-Rom. I read somewhere that the new Macs could still run stuff on OS 9 but am unsure if this applies to 8.6 and wondered if anyone could help me with this query.
    Thanks

    Hi, Sophs -
I read somewhere that the new Macs could still run stuff on OS 9 but am unsure if this applies to 8.6 and wondered if anyone could help me with this query.
Certain Mac models which can use OSX can also use OS 9 as Classic, which is OS 9 run as a program to provide an environment (shell) within which many OS 9 programs can be run. For this use, though, only OS 9.1 or 9.2.x can be used.
Unfortunately, no Intel based machine can use OS 9 as either a boot OS or as Classic.
The data files (documents) from your old iMac can be used on the new machine - most new OSX apps can open files made by older versions of the same, and sometimes similar, software. However, the programs would not be usable.
How to transfer stuff from the old machine to the new -
The simplest, cheapest way would be to use an on-line storage service, such as iDisk in .Mac - upload items from your iMac, download them to the new machine.
Next easiest would be to get a USB external hard drive of modest size, and use it to copy stuff from the iMac to the new machine.
Another possibility would be to get an external firewire enclosure, pull the hard drive fro the iMac and install it in the enclosure, then connect it to the new machine.
It used to be possible to connect two such machines via ethernet and use File Sharing to transfer the files. However, I'm not sure if it is possible to do that between your old iMac and a new Intel machine.

Approaching the issue of running old programs from a different path, there are some emulators which will allow the use of older Mac OS's on Intel machines. This article describes a few of them -
    http://www.atpm.com/12.09/classic.shtml
There's more info on SheepSgaver here -
    http://theappleblog.com/2006/07/01/classic-on-intel-macs-courtesy-of-sheepshaver /
Whether or not any of the emulators would serve your purposes well, or at all, is a different issue.

  • Transferring data from old imac to new imac using Time Machine.

Old imac is a 2006 that does not take Lion.  New Mac just purchased this month is a 27in imac.  I tried to set it up using firewire, but old imac wont join new imac to to the different versions of Snow Leopard and Lion.  I wnt back in and used the Time machine to start my back up.  New imac keeps going to sleep, bu I think it is stilll trasferring.  Old imac shows msg that Time Machine is unable to complet this task, but after clicking OK.  It continues to march.  I think I have 10 hours left on the transfer.  Is there an easier way to do this?

you are welcome. and here is a link to a pic of firewire connectors. the one on the left is FW800 and on the right is FW400

  • Difficulties transferring data from old PC to new iMac

I'm currently helping my neighbors set up their new iMac, 27". They own an old PC that a friend built, and it runs Windows XP. The iMac came yesterday, and I was helping them get started with it this afternoon. In order to transfer data like their iTunes library, photos, etc., I took over an Iomega external HD to use. However, the PC wouldn't detect it. I used the USB cord supplied with the drive, in several different ports on the PC. The ports do work, as an iPhone I plugged into them was detected. I then tried the supplied FireWire cable, no dice there either. No recognition on the PC whatsoever.
So I went back to my house and got my other hard drive, a LaCie Starck. Plugged it in to their PC, no recognition. I formatted both drives as MS-DOS (FAT) with Disk Utility, and that did nothing.
So I went to burning DVD's. I popped one in, and proceeded to use iTunes' backup library function to burn their library to the DVD. I inserted the blank disk, and then iTunes showed that it was 'Checking media" up in the top of the application for 60 seconds or so, and then the Apple logo replaced that and nothing else happened.
I'm out of ideas here. What do I do to get this information over to the iMac? Why are my drives not being recognized? I'm quite confused.

I may be able to help re. the iTunes transfer; unfortunately, I was not able to copy the article because it is a pop up, but if you will go to the Finder Help menu (on the new Mac) and type in "transfer", one of the help articles will be instructions on how to transfer iTunes music from a PC to a Mac.
And, here is a general article which may be helpful:

  • Transferring data from old iphone to new one

Here's the problem. I ordered the iphone4, but with the backorder delay taking longer than expected, I will find myself on vacation with my old 3gs and G4 Macbook Pro. My 3gs is synced to my intel imac (which I'm keeping at home).
When my new iphone4 arrives it will be sent to me while I'm on vacation. I'd like to activate the new phone right away, but how will I be able to transfer the data and apps and music from the old phone to the new. I'm concerned that:
    1. If I sync the 3gs to the laptop (G4 Macbook Pro) I may lose all my contacts and apps.
    2. Will I be able to sync the iphone4 to my G4 Macbook Pro?
Any advice, red flags or words of wisdom?

Which OS are you using on the MacBook Pro?
Do you have enough space to copy your entire iTunes folder to your MacBook Pro?

  • Transferring data from old iPad to new iPad after setup

I just got a new iPad Air 2 and got it set up, but it didn't realize until after set up that I had not backed up my old iPad in a long time. So now I'm missing a lot of data. I have since backed up the old iPad, but is there a way to get that data over to my new iPad? I thought about resetting it and starting over but I'm scared that I'll lose ALL of my info (like the cellular data plan that I set up with AT&T).

What you needed to do was back up  your old one then when you set up your new one, instead of choosing 'set up as new' you'd choose 'restore from backup' and restore it from the backup you just made of your old one.
In theory you should be able to do that, however it may just be easier to manually transfer the data over.
If it wasn't for the cellular aspect I'd suggest that you just erase your new one and restore it from the backup of your old one, but I don't have enough experience with cellular to know if that would mess that account up or not.

  • Transferring data from old MBP to new MBP

I have an older MBP (circa 2006) running Snow Leopard and I want to transfer user files (photos/music/iPhoto data, etc) to a new MBP running Lion.  I have searched several threads but wanted to make sure that migrating data using a time machine backup of the older machine would not be a problem. (i.e. its ok to migrate from a machine with an older OS).  I assume it should not be an issue, but wanted to confirm.
Also, I have never used the migration assistant.  Do people suggest using a time machine back-up or the migration assistant?  Appreciate any thoughts.

To avoid hassle don't use the Migration Assistant but rather the Setup Assistant in OSX Lion.

  • Transferring data from old computer to new for iphone3g

    Hi all.
I have purchased a macbook and now am faced with the dilemma of trying to figure how to transfer the info from my iphone ( music, contacts, photos etc) to the new computer. Previously my iphone is backed up by syncing with my windows run pc. I have backed up all the files from pc to external hardrive but do not fully understand what happens with the iphone information patricularly any things purchased.
I have extensive photos and music and contact information and these things are my primary concern.
If there is any tech savvy soul who can guide us it would be most appreciated. I am an older person trying to find how to do these things with not a lot of background understanding. I find the info in apple help still confusing .
    Cheers

With a Mac, you can use iPhoto to import all photos from your PC's backup.
All iTunes content including 3rd party apps are stored in an iTunes named folder. With Windows, the iTunes folder is located in your Music folder which is in the Documents folder. Copy the iTunes named folder on your external drive. With iTunes quit on your Mac, place the iTunes folder in your Music folder. This will replace the existing iTunes named folder in the Music folder on your Mac. You also need to authorize your Mac with your iTunes account with iTunes if you haven't already done so.
Before syncing contacts with the Address Book and calendar events with iCal on your Mac, enter one contact in the Address Book and one calendar event in iCal. Make these up if needed, which can be deleted later. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select. Syncing contacts with the Address Book and calendar events with iCal is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.
Before the first sync with iTunes on your Mac, with your iPhone connected to iTunes and without syncing, control-click on your iPhone in the iTunes source list under Devices and at the menu window that appears, select Back Up.
This link provides the data included with your iPhone's backup.

If you have already tried restarting the process and it continues to stall out, the only way to do it is through target disk mode. Because USB C is so new there is not an official way to do it. If you take it into an Apple Store they should transfer your data for free.

Just transferred data from old I-Pad to I-Pad two, both Wi-fI 3 G. Can't get online with new I-Pad--but can with old one. Suggestions? Will not use 3G with old one, only with new one. Have mobile-me account.

    Hi,

Try syncing with just the default apps, not apps you have downloaded. Then restart the iPad and see if it makes a difference.
