Transferring Files via File Sharing from 10.4.11 to 10.8.5

I am trying to get all of my files and information off of my laptop and migrate them to my new iMac. I have followed the instructions in regards for file sharing. However, when I bring up the finder and click on shared, the only thing that it will do is log me in as a guest. When I try and type in the password to log me in as a registered user it tells me that the password is wrong. Unless there is another password that I am unaware of I am 100% sure that I remember the password. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Can not login to file sharing from iMac

I have been trying to connect through the bluetooth feature to File Sharing from my iMac to my MacBook Pro.  I use the same password for login to my computers and for my File Sharing connections. For some unexplained reason; whatever password I enter when trying to connect from my iMac to the MacBook, it is rejected. I attempted to Change the Password. I entered what I have always used as my password and a new password. That was rejected. I assume because the "old password" was not recognized.
How do I go about establishing the correct password on my iMac to connect to my MacBook. I can log off my MacBook, and restart with that password; so I really don't understand what's going on.
    Please advise.

I read many threads about similar errors while connecting to BI Publisher I tried this:
    - Patch KB908002 (.Net for develosper) and didn't work
    - Patch KB907417 (office 2003 for client). Didn't work too.
I changed to a vitual machine with Windows XP and Office 2007. Everything is working just fine.
I think the problem with Publisher Desktop 10.1.3.2.1 (connection with BI Publisher) has to do with Windows Vista or Office 2003 (both installed on my pc). I'll install Office 2007 on Vista and see what happens.
    I'll post results.

  • Airport Extreme is allowing access to screen sharing, file sharing from external IP addresses (some from China, Canada etc)

How to get control over the ports/port forwarding etc in Airport Extreme?
How to make AE drop packets to certain ports from external ports.  Or create whitelist/blacklists?
I figured out where the MAC filtering is!  (It is inside the Timed Access Control).  I wish it had a list of connected device and allowed me to select, name and add them.
I am getting requests from Chinese IP to the screen sharing ports forwarded to my iMac.  Had requests to other ports as well.  There was one IP address from CANADA too.
I want to open file sharing for local use only.

Why is Airport Extreme forwarding requests for screen sharing from external ip addresses to my imac?  I don't have a public address, nor use dynamic dns service, and I have removed the server app (at least I think I have, but Apple Store doesn't think so).

  • File sharing from Mac to PC

Hopefully someone out there will be able to help me with this issue.
For the life of me, I cannot share movies stored on my iMac with any other device except my Apple TV.
I currently have most of my movie library archived in iTunes (90+ movies) that I converted to .mp4 or .mv4 using Handbrake. All of the movies are available on my AppleTV. I have three networked PCs, one ethernet, two wireless. I have enabled file sharing to all computers. I have installed iTunes on the wired PC as well as one wireless PC. I can share my iTunes music (but no video) between the iMac and PCs.
All three PCs are Windows XP SP2 machines. I can navigate to the movie folder located on the Mac on any computer. I cannot open any movie file. I can open and access shared PDFs, spreadsheets, word documents, pretty much anything I have access to EXCEPT the movies.
I CAN copy the movie from the host Mac to any PC with no issues. Then, Quicktime will play the movie. But, no matter what I try, I cannot stream the movies to any other device, except the Apple TV. (There are no movies stored on the Apple TV. I have a Time Capsule managing a wireless network that streams movies with only a few seconds delay.) I could see there being a time lag streaming a movie to a laptop with 500mb RAM and a G wireless connection, but the wired PC is connected with ethernet. It WILL allow me to copy a 2Gb movie from the iMAC to the PC in less than three minutes.
I initially only had "Read" permissions on the folder in question, but I did try "Read and Write" access to see what happened. Nada.
I cannot find a definitive answer as to sharing movies with iTunes. But, even if iTunes will only share music libraries, I still think that I should be able to stream movies by accessing the file directly. The wired PC is in my daughter's room, and I would like her to be able to stream movies from the iMac. If I navigate directly to the folder in question, one of two things happen. If I try to open a .mp4, I get "Error 50: An unknown error occured" If I try a .mv4, iTunes will open, but nothing happens. I can view the movies playlist under my shared library, but nothing happens when I attempt to open one.
Eventually, I would like to softmod a used XBOX my sister gave me to stream movies on the iMac to another TV. I even tried XBMC on the wired PC to act as a media manager since iTunes would not pull movies off the network. It will find the movies, but it will stall (I did not let it keep trying after 15 minutes of "buffering" a movie.)
I know I'm not the only one trying to share a library. Even if iTunes will not let me do it, I should be able to set something up so others on my LAN can access these files.
    iMac specs:
    2.4 GHz Intel, 2G RAM
    OS X 10.5.5
    Wired PC specs:
    1.99 GHz Intel, 384mB RAM
    XP SP2
    XP SP2
Any suggestions? I don't have another Mac to attempt this with, but if 3 PCs have the same failure, I suspect it's either how my network is set up, file permissions on the iMac, or just a fundamental flaw in the way I'm trying to resolve this issue.
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Wow! No one has any suggestions?
It has been suggested that Quicktime streaming will only work with Apple hardware. Can anyone tell me if iTunes will allow sharing video from a shared library, even if only Mac to Mac?
I'm beginning to suspect that is the case. In the meantime, I will try sharing a VIDEO_TS file using a media player on the wired PC to see what happens.
Or, if I'm good, perhaps I can get someone to bring a MacBook over one evening to try this with.
    More to follow.

  • File sharing from OS 10.6.5 to host 10.5.8

I've been trying to connect/fileshare from a macpro (os 10.6.5) to a macpro (os 10.5.8). I keep getting the error "Connection Failed" I can "see" the 10.5.8 computer but cannot connect. However the 10.5.8 can connect just fine to my 10.6.5
file sharing is turned on on both computers.
    any ideas?
    Thanks

    Same problem with a new 2011MBA 11.6" on 10.6.5 and a 2008 MBP 15" on 10.5.8.
I can open MBA from MBP, and share files with no problem, but other way around, can't get the MBA to connect to the MBP.
Anybody from Apple listening here ?

  • File sharing from 10.5.6 (iMac G4) to Windows computers

I recently upgraded to OS 10.5.6. Before that I was on 10.3.9 and I was able to see and access all computers on my cross-platform LAN (2 PCs and 2 Macs). My router shows that all computers are connected and has assigned IP addresses for each and I see and can access both PCs from my Mac BUT I cannot see either Mac from any Windows computer. File sharing is turned on in System Preferences.

I am going through the same thing. I got a support person who actually helped me with this. The issue is that the underlying way in which the Macs find each other has changed. The network code truly is incompatible. But you can cope, so long as you know the IP address within your LAN.
Go to the Finder and open the "Go" menu up there in the top menu bar. Select Connect to Server and type in the IP address of the machine you need to connect to.
In the Finder preferences, make sure that Computer is one of things that shows up in the left hand panel. Click it. On Computer, you'll find Network and clicking on that should now show the machine you just entered.
Notice that if the IP addresses happen to get shuffled around by the router, you'll have to set up the connection again.
At least, "it worked for me". I got access to my 10.3.9 machine from the 10.5.6 machine and can see all the files. (Can't yet figure out how to do remote printing to a non-network printer attached to the 10.3.9 machine though. It would probably be easier to walk upstairs...)
I tested this with Macs, not Windows. But I bet the same issue holds.
    Best of luck.

  • File sharing from mac to android device/phone tablet...(username/password invalid)

i want to stream files from macbook pro to an android device (tablet and phone)
i have set up the directories i want to share on the mac...
and on the android device i have installed different apps, but nothing works... it is detecting the macbook but its asking for a username and password
i use the username/pw i use to login to the mac, but that doesn't work it says its invalid
i have tried plex. bs player. es file explorer..
    please advise?

You can find the solution here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4284885
Windows Vista includes security enhancements to file sharing, and defaults to NTLMv3 authentication, but your Mac thinks it's NTLMv2 (you can see the login failures in /var/log/samba/smbd.log). You need to tell Vista that it's OK to use an older version of NTLM.
    1. Run "regedit.exe" and open this key:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
    2. If it doesn't already exist, create a DWORD value named
    LmCompatibilityLevel
    3. Set the value to 2 (if that doesn't work, lower it to 1)

  • Files shared from iTunes via iMac and iPad.

On my iPad2, when using Keynote, when trying to 'copy files from iTunes' the files retrieved are greyed out.  What is the solution to enable me to retrieve my .jpgs or .png files from my Mac (into Keynote).  iTunes is supposed to work but the files are grey...

I should probably clarify my response.
I am assuming that you want to move images for the Mac to the iPd so that you can place/import them into Keynote. If that assumption is correct, one very easy way to get the images into the iPAd would be to drag them into the Photos Stream in iPhoto - if you use Photos Stream and iPhoto on the Mac. From the Photos app on the iPad, you can save the images to the camera roll album and then place them into Keynote.
If using iTunes, you would have to place the photos into a folder and then sync that folder via iTunes and if you do use iPhoto, you could just include that album into your next sync without removing any other albums or events on the iPad. Select that folder, along with all of the other albums and events that you want to sync in the Photos tab of iTunes.

  • Trouble transferring files etc from old iMac to G4.

My friend has an old CRT iMac, not sure of the precise model but it's one the fruit coloured ones running OS 10.1. She's upgrading to my old flat panel G4 iMac running 10.4.11 but we've had trouble transferring her files, settings etc. First we tried using an ethernet cable but migration assistant on the G4 told us we needed to use firewire. She's bought a firewire cable, plugged it in & opened migration asst on the G4 but is getting no response at all. Could anyone advise us on what she should be doing please?
    Thanks,
    Janet.

By no response I mean no error message, no recognition at all by either iMac.
That sounds like a problem with getting FireWire Target Disk Mode going on the iMac G3. Be sure to review the article I linked to previously, and make sure the iMac can startup in the mode where you see the FireWire logo bouncing around the screen.
Note: If that iMac is one of the early slot-loader iMac G3 models, it needs to have +Firmware version 2.4 or later+ for FireWire Target Disk Mode to work (as noted in the article). So the Mac OS X version (even though it is old) will not prevent FireWire Target Disk Mode from working, but the firmware version may. If you can run System Profiler on that iMac G3, it should say what firmware version it has now (it may be called +Boot ROM+ ).

  • Is public file sharing from the cloud really "public"?

I'm wondering...When I make a file "PUBLIC" does that mean that it could be viewed by anyone in the public or just by people that I send the link to or people that they may send the link to? Is this crawled by search engines?

    Hi,
Sharing ONE file would not allow to view any other files.
If you send link via email to another email address, it will only send the link for that FILE which you shared.
You can't access any other files of the sender.
    There are two options :
One is PRIVATE -- with no options means this is private to you (Even if anyone knows the link, he can't view that file untill and unless that file is in PUBLIC mode)
Another is PUBLIC with 2 options : Comment and Download -- If you check those then the recipient will be able to comment and download that specific IMAGE or FILE.
    Thanks,
    Baljeet

  • How to view files shared from Airdrop?

Hi, I just shared a video i recorded from my mac to my iPhone, the transfer was successful, but i tried going to photos to view it and it's not there. Does anyone know where in the iPhone i can view airdrop files?
    Thanks.

Actually..now i know why. It's a screen recording video, i did a 5 second recording and it still didn't go through airdrop. The video is too tech'ed up for the iPhone to receive.
Not even through iTunes. it's a 5k video. the iPhone can't handle that.

  • File Sharing from 10.3 to 10.4

Word is on the BigBox running 10.4. On the OldBox running 10.3 system are Word documents. Now there are two problems 1) minor, 2) aggravating.
    1) Is that on OldBox pulling down the Go menu; Connect to Server.... the BigBox is listed, but selecting it never works. I must go to Browse and select BigBox, then it connects. Is that the answer? Always Browse? Seems like it should actually remember the computers listed there. Is there a way to make it do that?
    2) The OldBox shows the Word Documents with a Word icon, but if you open them they open in TextEdit. I have to go through Get Info and telling it to open Word files with Word. It even asks, "Do you want to open Word files with Word?" (Well, duhhh) Is this normal or can I do something to make it remember Word files are Word files?
Latest versions of each OS are installed.

In a Get Info window of the suspect file type, you can choose to have
a specific software app open them all with one type. This makes them
open later in the same app; and if you do get Word in the second Mac
and wanted it to open them, you could tell it to open all with Word later.
You could connect the computers via Ethernet cable, network them
so their ID numbers are included in the local network. I don't do this,
but do know there are a few ways other than using a server to share.
AppleTalk may still be a pathway to consider.
How far apart are these two computers? If you are using most of the
internet anyway, why not use Google accounts applications to open
the word docs as a text file in the second computer? (Why? Don't know.)
I have several ways to open Word documents, and can share in many.
Are these tasks continuous or are they occasional? You can get a
free download and updates of/for NeoOffice (open source Mac office)
and then not need to have or use Microsoft products either way.
Maybe I don't understand the question...
    Good luck & happy computing!
