Transferring from Old to New iPod

I just got a new 80GB classic iPod, and I'm trying to copy the songs from my old 1st generation nano to this new iPod. I tried the select all then drag method, but it didn't work. In place of the usual dashed box and plus sign under the cursor, the circle-with-a-line-through-it came up.
Is it even possible to sync between iPods? Thanks for your help.

You cannot copy directly from one iPod to another. The music must first be transferred from your old iPod back to the computer and iTunes, and from iTunes to your new iPod.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
SharePod is also freeware.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • Missing songs when transferring from old to new laptop

    Hi
I have just moved my songs from old to new laptop.  Unfortuantely it has not copied all of them over, when I try to play in itunes it asks me to locate them.  I have checked what has copied over and it has definately left them off, problem is it's left off quite a lot.  Was there something that I should have done on the old laptop before copying them to an external device?

To do that, you need to go to "/Applications/System Preferences" then go to the "Accounts" prefpane, then click on the user you want to delete, then click on the minus button in the bottom left corner of the window, but make sure you are logged in as the good user to do this and that the good user is an administrator.

  • Moving from old to new iPod -- what is '5th generation' ???

I got my first iPod (40GB) in late 2003, and have been enthusiastically using it since 2004.
The battery on the old iPod is shot. I plan on having Apple install a new battery, but for now, I've bought a new 60GB iPod and plan to treat it as my "main" iPod.
I've been surfing Apple's site to get the info I need about getting the new unit up and running -- but really I'm accumulating more questions than answers.
My new 60 GB iPod (purchased about two months ago) doesn't say 5th generation on the packaging or hardware -- how do I tell if it's 5th generation?
What the heck is 5th generation?
Nothing on the packaging or in the instructions of the new iPod says the new iPod will play videos. My main goal, anyways, is to listen to music. But I'd like to know -- will it play videos, or does one buy a special "video iPod" for that purpose?
Can I use my old docking station for this new iPod? It was bought in '04.
I currently run iTunes version 7.0.2.16 for Windows XP. The (scanty) docs that accompany the new iPod say to install the new iTunes software from the disk included in the box, so I plan to do that.
Will the software register the new iPod as separate device, distinct from my old iPod (which I plan to keep using, once it's fixed?) So that I can manage BOTH my iPods from within iTunes on my PC?
Any answers you can provide are greatly appreciated.

    1. You can use the information in this article to determine which type of iPod
    you have.
    2. The latest version of iTunes will recognize both
iPods individually. You can use these instructions to transfer different
    music to each iPod.

Thanks much! Those articles answered most of my questions. I now know exactly which iPods I have.
    What about the docking station?
My new 5th Generation iPod is slimmer than the older one -- shorter and thinner.
Does this mean I must get a new docking station for it? Or can I just plug it into the docking station for my original iPod?

  • Transferring from old to new computer

My computer recently got a virus that does not let me log on to the internet. I have since gotten a new computer. I was able to transfer my "purchased" songs that I had gotten from the iTunes store onto my new computer by following the online directions.
However, I could not transfer the rest of my playlist that I had uploaded from my cds. I would like to keep the current order of songs in my playlist and not have to reload all of the cds into my new computer and manually order the entire playlist again.
Can you please tell me how to do this. I have read a couple things that say I must be logged on to the internet on the old computer to transfer to the new computer but this is not possible because the old computer with the virus cannot connect to the internet. All help would be appreciated!!!

Using iTunes, syncing between a computer and an ipod is designed to work ONLY one-way, from the comp to the 'pod, and not the other way. There are free 3rd-party utilities designed to do this, Google "itunes alternatives" and you'll find many possible options.

  • How to transfer music from old to new IPod

I recently bought a new 30GB IPod Photo. How can I get the music from my old IPod to this new one?

If your music is only on your iPod and you have no back up or the original computer to sync to, there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

  • Transferring from old to new iMac computer

I am buying a new iMac to replace my 4 year old iMac. I want  want to transfer everything from my old iMac to the new one.
My question is which transfer method is best, Target disk or Time Machine?
Am not sure of exactly what happens when I connect the TM to the new computer & if this will download everything including apps.
Looking for pros & cons of each method before I start.

    Bob,
Please click the link below for a Time Machine tutorial:
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#timemachinebasics
Time Machine works quite well however as with any system it should be checked from time to time to guarantee everything is still working OK. Kind of like checking the oil on your car or double checking the front door is locked at night.
If you want to learn more about TM then I would also recommend looking over these TM FAQ's put together by Pondini.

  • Not all text messages and photos transferred from old to new iPhone

Old iPhone 4 backed up via iTunes successfully.  Then plugged in new iPhone 5C, restored from the backup of the old iPhone 4.  Things seemed to be working okay, but for some reason I only have text messages that up to June 24, 2013.  Same thing with phone calls and photos.  All the records stop at 6/24.  The old phone definitely has more data on it, in photos, messages and phone calls.
    Not sure.

  • Transferring from old to new Macbook

I recently bought a new Macbook Pro and have my harddrive from my last macbook backed up on a G drive Slim.  How do I get my Adobe products from the hard drive to my new Mackbook?  Thanks!

You don't. All Adobe products must be properly installed or else the activation system won't work. Install it using your original DVD/ download, use the trials or use the downloads from here:

  • Transferring from old to new Mac

I would like to transfer some of the files, apps etc on our old Mac G4 to a new Mac Mini. Problem is we only have one monitor. Any thoughts on the best way? G4 is running on 10.4.11 and Mini has the latest. We do have a Powerbook as well.

  • Transferring from old to new version of Elements

I am using Mountain Lion.  Just got Elements 11. I had Elemnts 4.  How do I move the pictures from that old version?

None of your photos were "in" Elements 4, if you were using the mac version. The late lamented File Browser was just a browser (showed you the folder you pointed it at, but didn't import or contain photos in any way) and any keywords you assigned using it were written into the files themselves as metadata. If you want to use organizer, just import the photos (File>Get Photos>From Files and Folders), and you should see the option to import any keywords assigned via the Browser.
If you had PSE 4 for windows, do you still have access to that computer?

  • Transferring from old to new user account

My existing user account is corrupted, and will not allow my Mac G5 (non-intel) to boot the desktop items; it only gets past the log in stage. In order to access my files, I created a new user account, and am able to transfer my files across easily enough. However, the problem is of course that I have lost quite a few settings, e.g. iTunes account and music/movie files, Safari bookmarks etc.
If I reinstall Leopard, will this fix the user account?
If not, is there a way to transfer the settings from one account to another? I have tried copying and pasting into the relevant directories, but this does not appear to work with either iTunes or Safari.
I would be most grateful for any advice.
    Thank you.

  • Transfers from old to new phone

Just got an IPhone 5s and cannot transfer all the info from my old iPhone thru iTunes, what's wrong?

I have the Treo 700wx (Verizon) and also have the same problem with the alarm going off an hour earlier since the time change.  Any solution to this would be truly appreciated.

  • Transferring from old to new

I currently have an iphone 3gs through tmobile but im getting an iphone 4 through verizon on september 10th, how do I transfer my apps, contacts and other information onto my new phone? thanks

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2109
However, be aware: If your 3GS has a higher iOS on it than your Verizon iPhone 4(likely), you will NOT be able to restore the 3GS backup to your iPhone 4.

  • I have inherited an ICloud account from one of my employers when transferring from old MacBook Pro to new MacMini and need to separate from this, presumably by setting up a new ICloud account.  How do I do this ?

I have inherited an ICloud account from one of my employers when transferring from old MacBook Pro (which belonged to them) to new MacMini and need to separate from this, presumably by setting up a new ICloud account.  How do I do this ?  And is there any danger, in doing so, that I might delete any of her ICloud information ?

Sign out in System Preferences>iCloud. This will remove any synced data such as Calendars, emails and Contacts from your Mac, but will have no effect on the data on the server - so that other devices logged into it will continue to see the data.

transferring data from old to new and stuck on one min remaining for 1.5 days.  any ideas

If you have already tried restarting the process and it continues to stall out, the only way to do it is through target disk mode. Because USB C is so new there is not an official way to do it. If you take it into an Apple Store they should transfer your data for free.
