Transferring iPhoto Library from MacBook Pro to iMac

I am trying to transfer my iPhoto library from my MacBook Pro to my iMac. My software is up to date on both computers. I put my MacBook Pro into firewire mode and tranferred over the iPhoto Library package file. I put it directly into my iPhoto library folder. I double clicked on the file and iPhoto opened, but it said that the file can not be read. Is this because on my laptop I have iPhoto 7.1.5 and on my desktop I have 6.0.6? I have also migrated from the iMac to the MacBook Pro a few years ago, could that be causing a problem? I called Apple about it and they said there is no reason this should not be working.

Is this because on my laptop I have iPhoto 7.1.5 and on my desktop I have 6.0.6?
This is exactly why. iPhoto 6 cannot read the iPhoto 7 Library. No version of iPhoto can read a later version's Library. The app is backward compatible, not forward compatible.

  • Transferring iPhoto book from MacBook Pro to iMac

    Hi everyone
I am the proud owner of a new iMac. I am trying to transfer an album I started on my husband's MacBook Pro, but all I can do is to export the photos...I already imporated all my events from the MacBook to the iMac. Now, I was to save the work that i have done on the album itself. Is the transfer feasible? Tx

By album do you mean book?  If so then you can't transfer a book from one library to another because the book is virtual, existing only in the database files of the library.
What you can do is duplicate the library with the book and in the copy delete all photos excecpt for those in the book. Then copy the book to the other Mac and use it to complete the book.  You can copy additional photos/albums from the large library to the book library with the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager.
This tutorial describes how to cull the library down to just the book: #9 - Archiving an iPhoto 7(08)/8(09)/9(11) Book for Editing and/or Ordering at a Later Date

  • How to import iphoto library from macbook air to imac

    Hi
I have been searching the support section but have not had any luck finding an answer to this. If someone can point me in the right direction to a link for directions that would be great.
I have just returned from a holiday and have been uploading all my photos to a macbook air iphoto library.
Now that I am home I want to import that library into my existing library on my imac.
Is this possible ? and how exactly (in no techno speak please - I am still quite new to Apple).
    Thanks in advance.

Do you want to replace the iPhoto Library on the iMac with the iPhoto library on the MBA?  then simply Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
But if you want to move selected (the new) photos from the MBA to the iMac then you need iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  it is the only way to move photos between libraries without losing information
If you want the photos only without history then you can export from the MBA (see the user tip on exporting for details on the options) and then import the photos to the iMac

  • Transferring iTunes library from MacBook Pro to MacBook Air

I used this site to transfer my iTunes library from my MBP to my MBA: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527, using an external hard drive to make the transfer.
The songs are now all listed in my iTunes music file on the MBA, but they don't show up when I launch iTunes. Any suggestions?

Just solved the problem. Needed to launch iTunes on the MBA, then went to File, Add to Library, then marked entire list of songs and clicked "Open."

I am trying to import aperture library from macbook to new imac the import window sees the external harddrive but does nt see library.  I can open library as a refernce library but cannot import onto hardrive as managable files

I may be misreading what you are trying to do but you don't import libraries via the import window. You use File->Import->Library..
If this doesn't resolve your problem post back with more detail of what you are doing and what is happening.

  • How do you move iMovies from MacBook Pro to iMac?

How do you move iMovies from MacBook Pro to iMac?  I started some projects on my MacBook Pro but would rather have the larger working area provided on the iMac large 27 inch screen.

    Hi there rainyri!
The easiest way for you to do this is to transfer the information to an external drive as an intermediary, then transfer the information from your drive to the internal drive on your iMac. We have an article that explains the steps for doing this, and it can be found here:
iMovie '11: Copy or move a project to an external hard disk

  • How can i transfer all my photos from iMac iPhoto Library to macbook pro to iPhoto or Adobe Lightroom 5

Just bought a 13.3" Macbook Pro Retina display Mid 2014 and would like to transfer all my Photos from my iMac to my Macbook Pro.
I have a thunderbolt cable ?????? Would it work if i connect them together and how ? If i can get some assistance and instructions on how to do it , Will be appreciated .
    Best regards

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
    If you're moving to Lightroom:
You need to export the images from iPhoto to the Finder, then import them to your Lightroom Catalogue.

  • Transferring iPhoto library from old MacBook Pro to new Mini

I am trying to transfer via Wifi the iPhoto library from my MacBook Pro (10.7.5) to new Mac Mini (10.9).  Finder will not move the file to the new machine because it says I do not have the correct permissions.  iPhoto on the mini can see but will not open the iPhoto Library on the old mac.  Any ideas?? Thanks!

see > How to migrate data from another Mac using Mountain Lion and earlier
Personally If I was only wanting to copy photos, I would copy the old iPhoto Library to an external hard drive and then import them from the external hard drive into iPhoto on the new computer.

  • Trying to transfer iPhoto library from MacBook to iMac.

I am trying to transfer one iPhoto library from my MacBook to desktop iMac to create more harddrive space on laptop.   I successfully transferred photos to external harddrive.  When I plug harddrive in to iMac, the iPhoto icon appears and the pictures are there, but I am not able to select it in order to import the library.  I was able to drag the icon to the desktop and the pictures are there - but when I try to dump in to iPhoto - it only gives me the option to launch and replace a new library.  I am seeking to combine the two libraries.  I would be so grateful for any guidance this community has!  Many thanks in advance!

    Hello:
You need to export the photos and then import them to the new library.

  • Transfer iphoto library from MacBook to iMac

I need to know the best way to move my iphoto library from my MacBook to my iMac. I have over 4000 pictures on my MacBook, and I tried to upload them to MobileMe but it takes forever the way I am doing it. (I am probably not doing it correctly, I have to click on and select each jpeg file to upload it.) I am getting very frustrated! I am sure there is an easier way to do it, I just don't know how. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Transferring iPhoto Library from 10.3 to 10.8

My folks recently upgraded from an eMac running 10.3 / Whatever Cat to an iMac running 10.8 / Mountain Lion.  I have transferred the old iPhoto Library to the new computer, and renamed it slightly (but did not replace or throw away the new iPhoto Library that came with the iMac.)  That new library has nothing in it.  I have downloaded and used the iPhoto Upgrader but have not yet done the part where it updates the photos for hours when you open the library with iPhoto itself.
Apparently in iPhoto 11 you could just keep two libraries forever, but this is not desirable in my parents' case.  So my questions are:
    1) do I want to import the old library or simply replace / throw away the new library by putting the old one in the Pictures folder?  (It used to be that importing an old library folder was a bad idea, is that still the case?)
    B)  if I replace the new iPhoto Library folder, will iPhoto store photos in a slightly odd way? For example,  when I upgraded to a small MBP after my first Macbook died I transferred my old iTunes library.  But because of that, all my music is actually stored in the "Music" file under "iTunes Media" and nothing is actually in the "iTunes Music" folder.  Not a problem really, but not all that clean either.
    3) in either case, will the dates of the photos remain as they are?
I'm know other people have similar questions, but most of the time they're transferring from a more recent version of iPhoto, so I just want to be sure before trying anything.  The photos are backed up elsewhere, so no pressure.
    I appreciate the advice.

    1. Throw away the new empty Library and put the transferred one into the PIctures Folder. Then Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
NOTE: there is no importing involved here. Just moving into place and starting iPhoto.
    2. What does "slightly odd" mean? Note that there are changes between iPhoto 08 and later, and iPhoto 1 and 6, in particular how the files are accessed. For help accessing your photos in iPhoto see this user tip:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4491
    3. Yes.

  • How do i transfer my data from macbook pro to iMac?

i just bought a iMac.  How do i transfer my itunes library, photos, files via bluetooth from macbook pro to my iMac?  Much thanks for your help!

I believe that when you boot your computer for the first time and you are following the onscreen instructions you are prompted whether you want to transfer data from an old mac or PC. If you click 'transfer from an old mac' and follow the onscreen instructions, this may work.
If you have already skipped this step you could use iCloud to transfer data. If you make sure that everything you want to transfer is synced in iCloud, this may also work.

  • Best way to Import Rebuilt iPhoto Library from External HD to iMac HD

I recently bought a new iMac and transferred the data from my old Mac to the new one. In doing so - I now want to move my entire iPhoto library from an external hard drive to the new iMac internal hard drive. What is the best way to do this?
I had to rebuild my library with iPhoto Library Manager; so all my photos now reside on the external HD in the Rebuilt Library package. I do want to keep all my events, folder, etc. in tact.
Do I just drag and drop the entire package contents? Or should I use the import function? What is recommended?
