Transferring playlists to new computer?

I have tried all of the tutorials for this given here but it is not working. On my windows pc using itunes 11, I saved the two files from the itunes music folder "itunes library.itl" and "itunes music library.xml" on my external HDD, I then copied them unto my Macbook's desktop, I would like to know 3 things please:
1] How to proceed from here, should I go into the itunes folder on the mac and replace the two files in there with the two backed up files?
2] If that method works then in which itunes folder should I place the original mp3's copied over from my pc?
3] How do I relink the playlists to the mp3's?
Thanks.

Ok I think it may be best to settle the issue of my pc's itunes backup situation first which is a simliar issue with my macbook, this time listing my steps:
1] On My desktop pc, in itunes 11, I created a number of playlists with names like 1946-1969, 12 inch 80s, reggaeton e.t.c e.t.c with the actual mp3's located on my connected external HDD in a top level folder titled "collection", inside this folder are the categorized mp3 folders with names like 1946-1969, 12 inch 80s, reggaeton e.t.c e.t.c, so you get the picture, I created the playlists to correspond to the actual mp3 folder's names.
2] I then copied the .itl and .xml files from the itunes folder on my pc located in C: Users/living room/music/itunes [as shown in screenshot] and pasted unto a flash drive for backup purposes.
3] I then uninstalled and reinstalled itunes 11 on my pc then replaced the new itunes .itl and .xml files with the backup files I had copied, now all playlists are showing and when I click on any playlist the files are showing in the library but when I click on any song, it's asking for the location of the song file, this where I am at a standstill and cannot go any further, I need to know how to link the playlists back to the songs still located on on my external HDD?
If I can solve this issue above then I think I should be able to soklve the transferring to my macbook issue?

  • Transfering Playlists to New Computer

I followed the directions that the Apple support page gave me to transfer my music to my new computer via my 5th generation iPod video. Although all of my music successfully transferred, my playlists did not...
How can I get the playlists from my old computer onto my new iTunes? I don't really want to manually recreate each playlist one song at a time from my entire library.
    Thanks in advance!

i didn't get to save my playlis
Do you mean your music? A playlist is simply a list of songs, same as if you write a list on a piece of paper. It is not the songs.
You need to have your songs on your computer or on your iPod or on your back up disk.

    Transferring playlists
If you want not only your content but also your playlists to exist on your new computer, you will want to transfer a copy of all your playlists from your old computer. To do this, choose File > Library > Export Library on your old computer. Save the XML file that is created to your desktop.
Send the playlists file to yourself as an e-mail attachment, use an external drive, or use file sharing to move the playlists file to your new computer. Once the file is on your new computer, open iTunes and choose File > Library > Import Playlist. The import process will remove any items from the playlists that you didn't share via Home Sharing.

  • I Have a Ipod Classic that all my music is on. After my previous computer crashed I have not had any of my music able to be transfered to the new computer from the Ipod. Is there a way to do this

I Have a Ipod Classic that all my music is on.
After my previous computer crashed I have not had any of my music able to be transfered to the new computer from the Ipod.
Is there a way to do this?

Unfortunately, unless you have a backup and can restore the iTunes library to the new computer, you are stuck with the current state of the iPod. This is one of those things that makes doing backups so important.
Unless your music is all purchased from iTunes (not from your own CD's that you imported into iTunes and then downloaded to the iPod), you will be able to re-download all your iTunes store music back to the iPod when you install iTunes on the new computer. When you first attach the iPod to the new computer and new iTunes the first time it will tell you that this iPod is synced with another iTunes library and let you initialize the iPod (which will erase everything on the iPod - so don't do this unless you don't care about the stuff on the iPod now).
I've seen 3rd party apps in the past that will let you copy music/content from iPod to computer and bypass iTunes, but not sure if they still exist as this was several years ago.
    good luck

  • Transferring CS3 to new computer and upgrading to CS6

I am wanting to transfer my Adobe CS3 suite to my new Macbook Pro. I'm worried about not being able to access my design files correctly once transferring to my new computer. I'm also interested in upgrading to the latest CS6. Any advice would be appreciated!

To install your CS3 Suite, don't try to copy the application files. If possible, use the installer discs or a copy of the installer file you original used to install on your old computer. If you don't have the original discs/installer file, you can download the installer here:
    Other downloads
Deactivate CS3 on your old computer.
As to buying the latest CS6, you can do that from the Adobe Store.

  • Transferring Itunes Playlists onto new computer!!!

This weekend I purchased a HP 64 bit tower with Windows Vista. My main concern with making a smooth transition from my old computer: *How do I transfer my Playlists from my old computer (or from my ipod) to my itunes library on my new computer? I have about 10,000 songs, so you can imagine how long it will take for me to reconstruct all of my playlists if I lose them Thanks!*

Copy the entire  /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer. Do not copy only the songs.
    Open iTunes.
That is all you need to do. Your library is moved with everything the same.

  • Transferring ITunes library and playlists to new computer?

Hi, have purchased a new computer (Vista) and transferred my wife's ITunes library from the old one (XP) but lost the playlists in the process. I still have the old computer.
Is there a way to redo this so that I can transfer the playlists to the new computer as well? Really hoping there is a way to save her playlists.
    Thanks for your help!

See if my reply in this thread makes anything clearer. Ideally you just copy the whole iTunes folder from one machine to the other. If you put the main iTunes library folder into the default location on the new machine, i.e. inside the user's Music folder then fire up iTunes it should work fine.
It only gets complicated if the library files and media folders were/are not in the standard layout. If you had previously copied just the media folder without the library files then these will need to be copied over and put in the correct relationship with the media folder. If the old library/media folders were in a split layout then normalise things on the old machine as described in my post before oopying across.

  • Transferring playlists from old computer (G4) to new (macbook pro)

I have a G4 Ibook running OS 10.3.9 and itunes 4 (yes its from Paleozoic era)
I need to import the playlists on that computer (I have 25 playlists and 4500 songs) into my macbook pro.
After exporting the playlists they will NOT import into the macbook pro's Itunes (running 10.5.8 Itunes 9) This was tried at the genius bar and I was told that there was nothing they could do.
I had been advised to download the latest version of itunes that could be used on my G4 but when I searched online all version of that Itunes 7.0.2 were unavailable for a mac (although you can get them for windows)
Anyone know of any workarounds or a way to get a hold of Itunes 7.0.2.
To redo all of the playlists manually will take me days.

  • HT1349 Transferring itunes to new computer

I have transferred my itunes playlist to my new computer ( to laptop from desk top) via memory stick and authorised my new computer.  The playlist appears but when I click on a tune it says that it cannot open as it cannot locate the file.  What do I need to do please ?

OK after 5 hours of beating my mouse I have the answer.
    Open Itunes.
Select your entire list and delete it. (If this makes you nervous start with one album. I wouldn't trust me either.) It will ask if you want to send to the recycle or keep the file in your media file. I chose to keep as I didn't want to drag them back out if I was wrong. Interesting that when I tried this again while writing these instructions. It didn't ask me a second time.
Now you that have that deleted your list/library. At the top left Click <FILE > then <ADD FILE TO LIBRARY>
This will bring up a new window.
On the left side of the new window. (my computer anyway) there is a list. Click <MUSIC> then double click the <iTunes folder>. Then Double click <iTunes MUSIC>
Now you are looking at all your artists folders. Select them all. You can click while holding the CTRL button to select all of them. They will self fill in at the bottom above the select folder button. click the <SELECT FOLDER> button.
TA DA ! Now you list/library is being repopulated with your music. Now wasn't that fun? You will have to deselect the songs you don't want to sync to you iPod.
I even tried it again as I wrote out these instructions. No problems here. Please try this with one album first.
If this works for you please come back and say so. That way people will know it's a good work through. If it does not work for you please say so in CAPS So people will know it may not for them.
This solution was pure trial and error. On a Toshiba Satellite running WINDOWS Vista Home premium. No warranty expressed or implied. Your mileage may vary. If swallowed do not induce vomiting (that's gross). I think Apple should buy me a Beatles cover song.

  • HT4527 sync playlists to new computer

how do i sync the playlists on my i-pod to the new computer?

  • Music folder transferred to a new computer won't sync

my iTunes folder contains approximately 8,000 songs. the computer on which it's stored is no longer working properly, so i saved my itunes folder onto an external hard drive, then uploaded it to a new laptop. now, when i attempt to sync my entire music library from the new computer, it only syncs my purchased music.
the files have transferred successfully, as i can click on any given song and it will indeed play (on the computer).
it's almost as though my music non-purchased music folder is saved in the wrong place, or that my ipod is not pointing to the right folder.
any idea how to combat this problem?

    Hi HB3207!
I have a couple of suggestions for you to attempt to resolve this issue. First, I would try re-creating your iTunes library following the instructions listed here:
iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451
You may also need to simply try restarting your phone and attempting to sync again after a restart. Information on completing this can be found here:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!
