Trash items

Hi! Where do i find the trash items with Time Machine?
What am i talking about: It appears i have deleted files that i do need again. So i started Time Machine and selected my last backup dating back to oct-23rd. while expected to find my files on desktop it appears i had already deleted them back then but probably at that time they were still in trash. So i searched the backup for the trash bin. But there is no trash bin.

Sorry, but you don't.
Time Machine (like most other backup apps) does not back up trash. See *What’s excluded from backups* in #11 of [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
You'll have to look at your desktop in older backups. If the files aren't there, they're gone.
If you emptied the trash lately (with a normal empty, not a Secure Empty), and haven't used your Mac much since then, there's a chance the items can be recovered with +Data Recovery+ software. But if you emptied it some time ago, and/or have added/changed much since then, the files have likely been overwritten.

  • Problems trashing items while viewing in cover flow

While in a folder on my desktop I am viewing items as cover flow.  I have trashed quite a few but the image of what has been trashed still appears. the file name changes because the item has been trashed but the image of what has been trashed stays there instead of showing the image of what the file actually is.  Very confusing and creates a workflow problem.
    Thanks for any help.

I have the same problem. looks like a bug.
    1. tracks are marked as compilation
    2. grouped together (same name used for album name and grouping for all tracks)
    3. in preferences i have also checked group compilations together.
album art when sorting by album still shows art for each track seperately.

  • Trashed items remain visible in Smart Album

When I delete an item from a smart album (with Cmd-Delete) it is supposed to be trashed. Indeed it appears in the trash, but also remains visible in the browser view of the smart album. Only when I empty the trash, the item disappears from the album.
Is this behaviour by design (and if so, how can I avoid it), or is it a bug?
    Greetings from Holland,
    Koen

Put another way, you are only deleting the link here not a version or master. It is just the way Aperture works, to save space on your hard drive. You can make multiple "copies" hundreds in fact but they do not Reside on the hard drive, only a link to one master telling Aperture to show you the particular image in any of the hundred places you put them. So, delete one and there is nothing to see. You will only see an image in the trash, if it is a version or a master. Read my other Post carefully it is very important to understand how Aperture works, and a good workflow to follow for trashing your unwanted stuff.
    Hope thats better. Allan

  • Can I trash items in the downloads folder or do I have to keep them in safe folders?

    Dear All
I have downloaded Skype software which I am still using.  Can I trash the items for it in the downloads folder or must I move them to keep them safe?
    With best wishes
    Michael Yeow

Although you can (and should) certainly trash anything in the Downloads folder, note that there are some considerations before doing so.
First, some apps require uninstallers to remove them, and in many cases the uninstaller is stored on the original disk image that was downloaded. You can always re-download the software to get the uninstaller, but it's always possible that the uninstaller for a future version won't do the job properly. So if the disk image contains an uninstaller and you think you may want to uninstall that software at some point in the future, it may be wise to keep a copy of the disk image file.
Secondly, some apps that you purchase may not be easily re-downloadable. In those cases, you will want to protect yourself against having to pay to re-purchase or re-download the app if something happens and you have to reinstall the app. (Like if you buy a new machine, or if your hard drive dies, or your system becomes corrupt requiring an "erase and install.") Keep a copy of the downloaded disk image file.
In cases where you want to keep the installer, you will probably want to move it somewhere other than the Downloads folder. (Keeping the Downloads folder empty is a good idea.) You will also want to make sure it's backed up, like the rest of your system, so it's available in the future if/when you need it.

  • Selectively deleting trash items

Hi All - I'm new to this forum and a Mac newbie. I working my way through all the Windows>>Mac user transitions. One thing I can't find out how to do is to delete only selected items in my trash bucket. I either have to delete all or none of them. I now have several very large files in there that I want removed from my computer. Other than removing all trash contents to a separate folder and then adding only those large files back to the trash to delete, is there a way I can delete only those selected large files from the trash bucket?
Thanks for your help with this.

There is a way to delete one or more items specificly in the Trash, but being new to Mac (means you are probably new to UNIX) and the following may be dangerous. So enter at your own risk.
    1. Open Terminal application form /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app
    2. Once in terminal, perform the following command exactly as written. Where the command reads "yourusername" insert the name or your account.
    cd /Users/yourusername/.Trash <Enter>
    ls -la <Enter>
Now look for the file that you're wanting to delete from trash. If you don't see the file/s you are looking for, go no further and post back as you're probably in the wrong location.
If you do see the files in terminal that you're wanting to remove from trash, then perform the following commands. Where the command reads filename.ext replace that with the name and extension of the file you are removing.
    rm filename.ext <Enter>
    ls -la <Enter>
    Is the file still there?
Post back if you have any problems, remember using terminal can be dangerous if you are not sure what you are doing.

  • Cannot move or trash items because "in use" - Need an "apply to all" option

In manually transferring items on my MacBook to my external hard drive I accidentally dropped the items into the desktop folder. I have everything backed-up properly on my external hard drive now. I attempted to move all of the items to the trash. I am prompted with "these items are in use and cannot be trashed - stop or continue." Continue works and I can throw them into the the trash. The problem -- THERE ARE 8,722 items!!! It is making me hit continue for each item. I cannot push continue 8,722 times. I need an "apply to all" button, but it doesn't offer me that.  Is there another solution?

Try disconnecting the external drive and restarting your Macbook. That might solve your problem of not being able to do a bulk trash drop and empty.

  • History of deleted Trash items

Is there a log somewhere to track or list recent items trashed/deleted from computer? I'm trying to determine if a virus wiped out certain files from my computer or if someone actually went onto my computer and trashed & deleted 'em.

You might be able to create a folder action to track what was placed in a trash can. There is a trash can for each volume you have.
If interested, I could provide more details on how to do this.

  • Recovering trashed items

How can I recover items that may have been trashed and then the trash was emptied.
My husband was cleaning his desktop and said he moved our son's school file off the desk top to the documents file.  It has completely disappeared.  We have tried searching for it to no avail.  I am afraid he trashed it unknowinly.  Any suggestions?  All our son's papers were in that file, along with his assignment that is due tomorrow!
    Thanks,
    EAJ

Try something like Data Rescue or other data retrieval app. Might not be possible to get the homework, so he might have to revert to pen and paper.
FWIW, having separate accounts for each user would preclude this kind of tragedy.

  • Can't empty trash - items "in use"

I am trying to uninstall Palm desktop software from my Powerbook G4. I have located all the associated files and applications and put them in the trash. When I try to empty, however, I get messages that the following are in use, preventing the trash from emptying: User Data, which is a file that I found in a palm folder and put in the trash with everything else; USB Notifier, which I cannot find anywhere - tried a Spotlight search, etc.; Transport Monitor, which is another Palm-associated application, which I put in the trash; Localized.rsrc, same deal as USB Notifier, can't find it anywhere, don't know what it is...
    So... any ideas?
    Thanks a lot!
    David

You may have background processes still running for the Palm. Open Activity Monitor and look for any processes associated with the Palm software. If any are running simply select them and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Then try emptying the Trash.

  • Trash items "in use"

I have two empty folders (both contain 0 k)in my trash that won't delete. They're not locked and on the Get Info page for each of them it says I have permission to read and write. I've tried Secure Empty Trash, holding down the Option key, re-booting, running disc permission repair from both the computer and the start up disc.
    I'm out of ideas.
    Any help out there?

Okay, I tried it again. Here's the entire window:
Last login: Thu Jan 31 12:59:24 on ttys000
    Franks-G5:~ franksimon$ lsof /Volumes/LACIE/.Trashes/501/erica\ marco
I'll understand if this is getting a bit old and you don't want to deal with it any longer. I really appreciate the help.
Its no problem. I would, however, expect some kind of output from lsof, like:
    Franks-G5:~ franksimon$ lsof /Volumes/LACIE/.Trashes/501/erica\ marco
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
    <some app name> 4551 franksimon 22u REG 14,3 1494 805956 /Volumes/LACIE/.Trashes/501/erica\ marco
Did you press the return key after entering 'lsof /Volumes/LACIE/.Trashes/501/erica\ marco' to run the command?
