Trashed items remain visible in Smart Album

When I delete an item from a smart album (with Cmd-Delete) it is supposed to be trashed. Indeed it appears in the trash, but also remains visible in the browser view of the smart album. Only when I empty the trash, the item disappears from the album.
Is this behaviour by design (and if so, how can I avoid it), or is it a bug?
Greetings from Holland,
Koen

Put another way, you are only deleting the link here not a version or master. It is just the way Aperture works, to save space on your hard drive. You can make multiple "copies" hundreds in fact but they do not Reside on the hard drive, only a link to one master telling Aperture to show you the particular image in any of the hundred places you put them. So, delete one and there is nothing to see. You will only see an image in the trash, if it is a version or a master. Read my other Post carefully it is very important to understand how Aperture works, and a good workflow to follow for trashing your unwanted stuff.
Hope thats better. Allan

  • Trashed images showing up in Smart Albums?

I understand that trashed images aren't really deleted, that you have to empty the Trash to do that. That's fine. But how can I prevent trashed images from showing up in my Smart Albums? I would presume there's some Smart Album condition to do this but I can't figure it out. Thanks.

Images in the trash won't show up in smart albums. If you are still seeing the image in the smart album then it is being referenced from someplace else in your library.

  • Smart Album not working

Trying to set up a Smart Album that shows all pics not already in an album used to work but does not now. I keep a library for each year and trying to make sure only has pics for that year hence the smart album. If I select not in the album for the year that works but not if I sleet not in any. Any advice greatly appreciated.
    thanks

Thanks again I think that Larry is correct and I shoudl put my albums back to gether again at least that way importing a single pic once fixes most of the difficulty.
Having all photos in one large library has many advantages. Most importantly, you can search all photos at once. Now you can only search one library at a time and cannot create albums, books, sideshows basd on all your pictures.
Have not tried Aperture yet and from what you say same porblem as iPhoto.
Not the same problem, but the same library format. That makes it easy to travel between the two worlds, and I am doing it frequently.
In Aperture this works without problems:
"Album name is not empty and does not contain 'Last Import'".
That confirmed my suspicion, that the "Last Import" library item is indeed a smart album and not an event.

  • How to select only images in the trash for an Aperture Smart Album?

    Hello,
I would like to define a Smart Album that selects all referenced files currently residing in the TRASH only. I cannot figure out how I can determine if an item is in the trash. Anyone an idea?
    Thanks
    Draellme

Smart albums cannot be created that are related to the Trash contents.

  • Smart Album Help

Smart Album help, please! While converting old slides to digital, I am importing to iPhoto in small batches. I have created a "smart album" for the converted slides expecting successive imports would automatically install into that "converted slides" titled smart album. It's not happening. ? ? ? I titled the 2nd imported batch "converted slides". This 2nd import is sitting in "Last Roll" rather than automatically moving to the smart album. How do I move this 2nd batch of 242 photos from "Last Roll" into its designated album? I tried "drag n drop" the whole roll, perusing iPhoto help menu, to no avail. HELP!
    Neophyte NaNa

On further review of the iPhoto Help menu, it seems that an "Album" is much more flexible than the smart album. Can I change a smart album into a regular album? Or, I've created a "folder" for the smart album. Now, if I "Trash" the smart album, will the folder of slides remain? My right shoulder aches from too many hours on this project, that now I'm afraid to try anything for fear of loosing all that work. SHEEESH.

  • Rejects remain visible after 1.1 update

I have smart albums set up to sort my pics by month. I was still on April when I updated to 1.1, and my rejects photos continued to "disappear" from the album as they always had. I have never changed any settings related to ranking and viewability—this was just the way things worked by default. Yesterday I created a smart album for May, and immediately noticed that rejected photos stayed visible. If I go back to April, which has the EXACT same smart album settings (except different month) and is in the same project, the rejects still disappear. The only thing I can guess is that defaults changed in 1.1 and only apply to albums created since the update. Is this possible? Seems confusing to have such inconsistent behavior.
I figured out how to modify my smart album to only include photos unranked or better, but I would like to understand why only my new May album requires this.

I noticed the same issue last night while editing an album. Prior to the 1.1.1 update, as I rejected a picture, it would disappear and show up in the rejects folder as I moved on.
Post the 1.1.1 update, rejects remain in the originating album. I haven't had a chance to look in the reject folder to see if they are there as well. Only difference in my workflow was that I did keywords first on this album and usually rate or reject first.

  • New Album from Smart Album makes NEW VERSIONS of all files? Bug?

Got what I think is an oddball bug here, but see if any of you have experienced it.
Making a new album of the contents of a Smart Album with about 600 images resulted in the SBOD, a lot of time and disk activity and the creation of NEW VERSIONS of all the files populating the new album. This, of course, also doubled the number of files in the original Smart Album, since the keywords used are a match. First thinking it might be something I had not read in the manual, I grabbed the book and could not find this behavior listed…..so….my expected result is a new album with the identical contents of the Smart Album selected as the source.
I am creating a presentation for a client whose work is in multiple projects in a ~150GB library. All images are heavily keyworded, so making Smart Albums of specific elements of the work was easy. My intended workflow to get through this mountain of pix was to make Smart Albums of specific elements, then make New Albums from each, manually edit and reorg these albums individually, then combine my edits into a single book file.
Now the structure leading to this problem is as follows:
    1) I created a single “main” folder to store all projects and other elements and hierarchy for this client. Clicking on this folder returns some 8500 images spanning multiple projects…all as expected.
    2) At the top level of this “main” folder, I made about 20 Smart Albums to presort the main elements I wanted to include. I made the first Smart Album by clicking the icon in the top bar. The rest of the smart albums I made by duplicating the previous Smart Album, then changing keyword selection. I would select the new keywords I wanted, then de-select the ones that were from the album I had duplicated. The reason I did it that was for speed, there is little delay in displaying the items that were already searched for, and a significant delay in going from new. Anyway, somewhere in this process, I decided to organize my workflow further, so I created a new folder (calling it Smart Album Selects) at the same level as the Smart Albums, and then dragged the Smart Albums into the new Smart Album Selects folder. Still, no problem.
    3) Later in my session, I went to create another new Smart Album, and this time I did so already in the Smart Album Selects folder. When I opened the HUD to select the keywords, the Keyword area and check box were greyed out!!! Weird, I though….so I simply duplicated an existing Smart Album from my Smart Album Selects folder, opened the HUD, and sure enough, all my keywords were there. I changed the keyword selection, and went on with work. During the day I did this same operation 3 more times, making 4 Smart Albums created the same way.
    4) OK…here is the strange behavior. To make my new custom album from the Smart Album selects, I selected one of the Smart Albums, and clicked on the New Album icon. Got the expected dialog, make with 1 image or all images, selected all images, and instead of a new album popping up moments later, I got the SBOD, and the Activity Monitor said Aperture and my hard disk was cranking away. About 4-5 minutes later, Aperture became responsive again, and had created a new album. However, upon inspection, the album contained NEW VERSIONS of all the images that were in the Smart Album, about 600 files.
    5) I went back and clicked on a different Smart Album in the same spot in the hierarchy…but it was one of the first ones I had created (meaning I built this BEFORE reorganizing into the Smart Album Selects folder). Tried making a new album again, with 1 image, worked fine, popped up instantly. Tried selecting 4 images, same thing, worked fine. Selected All, made album, worked fine.
    6) Went back to the Smart Album I had the problem with, this time selected 4 images, make New Album, and sure enough the New Album had NEW VERSIONS of the pix again…OK, I went back to the top of my folder hierarchy, my “main” folder and made a brand new Smart Album by clicking the icon, and selecting keywords. Made a new album from that, no problem, popped up instantly, no new versions.
    7) I then re-made all my Smart Albums at the top of the folder hierarchy, and they all work fine creating new albums. I got back to the task at hand…hopefully there is enough data here to let the Aperture engineers find this problem…Assuming, that is it is not just me misunderstanding some element in the program.
Sorry for the length, but has anyone else run into this??

Nope, all the images at this point in my workflow have been unstacked, with the non-picked members of the original stacks discarded.
Now that it seems I am not the only one who has witnessed this behavior, what I am really trying to find out, is what is the definitive proper operation of this according to the Aperture group at Apple.
Assuming I have opened a Smart Album with images displayed, and no images are selected.
    Is the correct behavior:
    1) Selecting New Album makes a new Untitled Album (very quickly) with the identical contents of the Smart Album....OR...
    2) Selecting New Album makes a new Untitled Album (slowly) with NEW VERSIONS of the contents of the Smart Album. (Also, depending upon the number of images, typically brings up SBOD and makes Aperture unresponsive until it is complete.)
Now what I expected to happen was #1, as it is what happens when I select New Album when a project is selected. Given Apple's human interface creedo for intuitive operation, I think this is the most intuitive choice, because I can't think of a good reason I would want to double the number of versions of all files in an album, unless I expressly told the app to do this.
Could an Apple guy provide the definitive answer, please...
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Photo loss from a project when creating a smart album

Running Aperture 3.4.3 on iMac with OS X 10.7.5. Photos stored on internal drive. After creating two smart albums based on a date range, one with keywords and one with ratings, some, but not all, of the photos that appeared in the smart albums disappeared from the original projects (each project contains photos from a single day). One of the original projects still notes 454 photos under its thumbnail, but when opened only displays 308 photos. The project path of the photos in the smart album still references the correct project. I tried deleting the smart album but the photos did not immediately reappear in the correct project so I undid the delete. I tried closing and reopening Aperture. I tried system restart. No luck. Reading the Aperture help/manual suggests that the photos should remain in the original project.

First: Make sure the Browser Filter is set to "Showing All" (or "Unrated or Better") when the Project is selected.

  • Can't set smart album pictures as desktop backgrounds.

i have imported 'without copying to library' a whole bunch of pics into iphoto and have created smart albums. now i went to 'change desktop background' by control clicking on the desktop and am selecting a pictures from one of the smart albums but its only displaying a blue background. this is true for all smart albums and normals ones as well. when i select an image from the other folders they work fine. what could be the reason?
the primary reason of importing stuff to iphoto was so that they are easily available across applications.

    simport
Do you know of any reason why the Desktop pref pane should not be able to use photos in a "referenced" iphoto library
It's just the nature of the beast.
but I just don't trust it enough to do what it will with my photos by having them stored in the iPhoto library.
    What are you afraid of?
When you import a pic into iPhoto in the default Managed mode all it does is make a byte by byte copy of the pic. Nothing else. It's an exact copy. It makes no alterations, adds nothing, removes nothing.
The pic is stored in the Finder. Yes, it's in a Unix Style Package file, but apart from all the ways to access your pics I'll describe in a moment, if you want to look inside the package you can do so at any time: Simply right click on the iPhoto Library and select 'Show Package Contents' from the resulting menu. A Finder window will open and you'll see the Library inside.
There are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three core folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner. (As your Library is referenced the files will be aliases rather than the actual files.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
Remember: iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
Running a referenced library has a number of pitfalls - apart from the fact that System Preferences cannot use the files.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, there are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Your choice, obviously, but best to be aware of all the ramifications. By all means post back if you require more info.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Other information that may offer comfort:
Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
Mind you, I don't suggest that you change over in one go. I think the best thing to do is create a new Library (Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library') and set it as a Managed Library. Import 50 or 100 pics an explore it, see how it works and see if that does anything for your confidence.

  • Can't delete photos in smart album view

Assuming we all know how smart albums work, let's jump to why I can't delete a photo from a smart album. In all other views, it seems, I can delete images. When I'm scanning through 500 pictures tagged with Christmas in my Christmas Smart Album and come across one I want to delete, I can't do so. What's worse, going back to Photos view and trying to find that picture to delete it is almost impossible when you're looking through a library of 6,000 images.
Am I missing something? Do I really have to find a work around for this? Why has Apple left out DELETE from Smart Albums?

To delete a photo that's in a smart album you need to use the CommandOptionDelete key combination to move it to the trash. If you just want to remove the photo from the album you will need to change on that photo the feature that the smart album is set to look for.
    Happy Holidays

  • Is it possible to move photos in an event into a smart album?

Is it possible to move photos in an existing event into a smart album?

    Put another way:
No. An Event is a place. A Smart Album isn't a place, it's a list. It's the answer to a Question: "What are all the photos with this keyword?" "What are all the Photos with this date?"
So, nothing in a Smart Album is moved. It remains in it's original location and is simply listed in the Album.

  • PSE9/Win 7: Can I create a Smart Album of all images that Don't have a certain tag?

    Using PSE9 on Windows 7.
I'd like to create a Smart Album that contains all of the images that don't have a particular tag.
When I click on Create New Smart Album the dialog box allows me to select 'Keyword Tags'.
But the next item is 'Include'. Then I can select that tags I want.
I basically want the Include to be 'Exclude'.
Any way to do something like that?

    Hi,
    You could try this.
    1) Show all photos
    2) Check the Keyword Tag that you are interested in
    3) Under Options Select Hide best match results & Show results that do not match (i.e. reverse the last two conditions).
    to read
That should be showing you what you wanted to see
    4) Now use the top option Save Search Criteria As Smart Album and give it a name
That seems to remember the reversed conditions as well as the tag.
    Good Luck,
    Brian

  • Sync Smart Albums

I have Mac with 10.5.7 and iTunes 8.2.1. I am trying to sync both my iPhone 3.0 and my iPod with my MacBook Pro. Most of my smart albums sync but others remain blank on either of my devices. I have tried manually syncing and auto syncing and the same results. I have unchecked and rechecked the music list in the iTunes sections when selecting either device. Not sure why the selected Smart Albums in either device are not syncing what is present in the Smart Albums on the computer.

Forgot to mention that I have tons of room on my iPod. That is not an issue. For example one of the folders on my iPod is meant to hold only 5 songs, yet, it is blank and the main folder located on iTunes has those 5 songs in it.

  • IPhoto 11 - Photos From Option-Selected Smart Albums Not Included in Slideshow

Running iPhoto 11 on an Spring 2013 iMac (new thin bezel; hard state drive).  I have multiple "smart" albums in my library, based upon keywords.  When I try to select a subset of those smart albums for inclusion in a slideshow (i.e. clicking the play button at the bottom of the iPhoto interface), iPhoto only includes the photos I select from the given albums about 50% of the time.
For example, I may select albums 1, 3 and 5 for the slideshow, out of 10 albums total.  iPhoto will only include photos from albums 1 and 5 in the working "selection" of photos, despite my explicit inclusion of the photos from album 3 in what I selected.
This is such a terrible and obviously preventable bug I am pretty furious.
    <Edited by Host>

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If there's no improvement as a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
