Travel in France...for real, people

I want to take my US-bought MacBook Pro, use the World Travel Kit, and plug into a France outlet. Some people swear the MBP does this without a converter or transformer and some claim that certain foreign voltages fry the machine. Really now this is a big risk...does anyone have actual experience using an MBP in France?
I'd love to believe <<ït should work>> but I once did fry a Sony notebook in Paris and it is terribly depressing.
Be grateful for any experience.

When you fried your Sony in Paris, did you plug it in directly to the 240v socket and you didn't have a universal power supply on it?
If you own a MBP, your 85watt power supply "brick" is a universal power supply. That means it will work in the US, which is 120v 60Hz and abroad, which is typically 240V 50Hz. Get a magnifying glass and read the gray lettering on the side of the brick. It should say, 100-240v 50-60Hz. All you'd need is an adapter plug specific for the country you are visiting. If you want a bit more security then you can purchase a voltage converter that can support the 85watt brick with the three-prong plug.
I just returned from China, and it worked find with the adapter.

  • Ipad in france for a month

Hi.  Our daughter will be travelling to France for a month (actually, 5 weeks) and we wish to equip her iPad 3G with data for the trip.
The problem: no French credit card, no French bank account.  I am aware of prepaid cards from SFR for 9 Euro; this works great if you are there for a couple of days, but after the first two days it is 6 Euro/day which is obviously prohibitive.
Other than that card, how can I get her 5 weeks worth of data on her iPad without breaking the bank?

I guess I should have been more specific: we are looking for 3G data access.
So far I appreciate the effort, but the advice isn't too helpful. As I indicated in my original post, I am familiar with SFR as one of the internet providers; I believe Orange is another. Telling me to use wifi or put the iPad away isn't really addressing the issue.
I am looking for someone who knows how to get 3G access for 5 weeks or so from a French provider without having a French credit card or a French bank account (which are usually required to get a contract in France).

  • I have an ipad2 with wifi and 3G.  My wife and I are traveling in France (Nice) then into Italy.  We are unable to purchase a data plan because our Verizon IPad will not accept a sims chip...we are told.  We were advised that this model wound work in Euro

I have an ipad2 with wifi and 3G.  My wife and I are traveling in France (Nice) then into Italy.  We are unable to purchase a data plan because our Verizon IPad will not accept a sim chip...we are told.  An Apple store employee here said this model is good only in the US. The iPads here take a sim card. We were advised by an Apple Store Employee at home that this model would work in Europe and that we could buy our service here.  That does not seem to be the case.    We have been told that we must invest in a modem at 200.00€ and then purchase a separate service plan for each country. We can use the free wifi wherever it is available but we cannot connect to the outside world when out of range. Is there anything else we can do?
    Thanks, John

Unfortunately, no other solution is available.
    Hope this helps

  • Traveling to France with my iPad 2 ATT

I am traveling to France with my iPad 2 with 3G.  I realize I can use Wi-Fi for data, but I would like to use the 3G in France. I would like to do that my changing my micro sim in my ipad so I can use a local carrier in France and save some money.  Does anyone know about this subject and where I can purchase a micro sim in France.  Does anyone have any experience with this matter.

They're rated for world voltage. If you can find the teeny tiny print on your charging bricks it'll say 100-240W, which covers the world wide variances.
All you'll need is that adapter.

  • Lotus Traveler Address Encoding for Apple Devices Problems with Z10

    Hi,
we have problems with the Lotus Traveler Address Encoding for Apple Devices IBM Notes and Domino wiki
We are running Traveler 9.0 with BES 10.1 and 10.1.0.2354 on the Z10.
When composing a new mail addresses from our Domino NAB are shown like this:  [email protected] instead of the name. It seems to me that name search is first looking to the Internet address field in the Domino NAB. In our case this field is empty (and cannot be filled with an address). If the field is empty, the User name or the Short name field seems to be used. This fields are filled with Domino like names like John Doe/City/Company. The Traveler Server will convert these names (see link above) and the Device (Z10) should only show the common name instead of the converted name.
This is not working on our Z10s. The converted name is always shown like [email protected] and you don't know the real name.
Is the problem known? Any workarounds?
Edit: Further investigations have shown that the conversion works if you use an address in the mailbox the first time. If you use it later again, it is coming unconverted from the address chache. Also if you perform a remote search from the contacts app the converted name instead of the common name is shown.
    Regards
    Nico

    Hi Friend,
While your idevices still having apps downloaded by the old Apple ID, Apple Store will ask you for the old Apple ID and password to updated them. But, if you delete all apps downloaded by the old Apple ID, then download again by the new Apple ID, Apple Store will not ask you anymore for the old one.

  • Thinkpad S540 : Cannot Disable Microphone for real (even if disabled in BIOS)

    Hi,
I have an uncommon problem. Usualy people have troubles to get their devices working, mine is working to well...
I got a wonderful Thinkpad S540, working very well from scratch under the last Ubuntu 14.10
I went to the BIOS to disable all the devices I don't need like WAN, Bluetooth, camera AND MICROPHONE !
But this last one doesn't want to leave from my configuration.
And it is VERY sensitive and powerfull, I've tested it a bit at work, at home and I manage to catch conversation very far away from my place with the microphone with simple software like arecord, example :
    arecord -D default -f cd toto.wav
    next, try :
    vlc toto.wav
you will be upset by the high quality of the record. I made some test, the entire metal LCD panel is used "as" microphone amplifier. I tried to cover the mutiple holes at the top of the LCD panel, it still works Great...
The problem is : I would like to switch it off...
I flashed the last BIOS Revision: 1.63
I disabled the microphone in the BIOS, I restart 5 times, with and without the AC adaptater, it doesn't change anything...
Does someone know how to switch microphone off for real ?
Is it a Bug in the BIOS ?
Can we have some support contact to get a new working BIOS release ?
    Regard's

    Sorry guys,
problem sorted, my BIOS supervizer password was different than power on password, always when I was promt to put in password, I was putting there the one for power on and it let me go in BUT when I wen in BIOS, I wasnt able to access settings.
after I put in right supervisor password everything is working how supose to.

I will travel to France and let me know if I should buy any adapter to charge my iphone?, because the plugs are different than here in chile

    Hi Shawn,
It sounds like the person who installed the hardware didn't install the software properly for you. You should reinstall this to get full functionality and control yourself.
    The process is easy:
) With the computer on, close all programs that are running and put the Creative CD-ROM into your computer's CD or DVD dri've. There are probably several disks; the one that you want should say 'Intallation and Applications CD' on the label.
    2) The Setup program should start automatically in a few moments, but if nothing happens, click your Start menu and choose Run..., then click the Browse button. From the 'Look In' drop-down menu, choose your CD/DVD dri've. In the list of files that appears, choose the one called Setup or Setup.exe.
    3) The Setup program will let you choose what to install. Choose to install everything. There might be two separate Setup processes that start after this: one for the soundcard's drivers, and one for the Creative MediaSource software. Within each process, when you are given the choice of Full, Custom, or Basic, select Full in each case. Follow the instructions in the programs and they will guide you through the setup process.
IMPORTANT: you will likely be given the option to use digital output only to your speakers. Only select this if you have digital speakers, attached to the sondcard through only one digital cable. If your speakers are attached using several cables, you should use analog output.
    4) Once all of the Setup programs are completed, they will probably have you restart your computer.
All of the above should have been done when the card was first installed, but it seems that whoever you paid to do the installation didn't bother with the software install.
After this is all done, you should be able to use all of your speakers. If you are still having trouble, you will be able to follow the instructions that you were given before on how to enable CMSS.
    Good luck!

  • Can I buy a new Micro SIM card in France for my Verizon iPhone 5 and use it while in Paris?  Same for London?

I am travelling to Paris for a week and then London for a week. Can I purchase a new Micro SIM card for my Verizon iPhone 5 in Paris and London and then use my phone with some sort of prepaid plan while in France and England?

I just spoke with Tech Support at Verizon and they said Yes, I can use my iPhone 5 in France and England. No unlocking is needed because the phones come pre-unlocked and ready to go. All I need to do is buy a new Micro SIM card in France/England and pick the pre-paid plan of my choosing and the phone will be good to go. Of course, I need to not lose my original Micro SIM card otherwise I would have quite the headache getting a new one once back in the US.

  • I PAD 2 TESTERS NEEDED; IS THIS FOR REAL?

IS ALL THIS I PAD 2 TESTERS NEEDED FOR REAL?

Umm, little more information please?  Testing of what (an app, a case, a cover, a mobile solar charger - what are you being asked to test)?  By whom?  Who sent you the request to test something, or where did you see it?
P.S. If it is Apple asking you to help them beta test some software, they do email people (using the email address registered with their AppleID) and the email will be pretty self explanatory.

  • I am using my Apple ID on multiple devices for other people. How can I make icloud work only for my devices?

I am using my Apple ID on multiple devices for other people in my family and now I am getting a new iphone and want to take only the information on my old iphone to the new one without the information on the other devices using the same account. Is there a way to do that?
Also, for the future can I use multiple addresses and apple IDs for the same credit card information?
    Thanks in advance,
    Marian

Ok, so you want to remove data (contacts, bookmarks, calendar etc) from other users from your iCloud/Apple ID?
If you want to use your ID for your family because it is the account everybody uses to buy stuff then you only need to ensure that your apple ID is set up in the store (settings-store) and then the users of each device and put their own apple ID in icloud/message/facetime/etc.
To set up your device, in my opinion, it is best to back up to itunes, and then plug your new device into itunes and "set up as ..." and select the backup from your device.  This will import all your data/settings and your new device will be set up just like your old one.
I am not certain about using the same payment method for more than one account.

Can I create a 2nd iTunes account on one PC that caters for two seperate devices for different people?

For what reason would you do that?
Simply connect the device, select the content desired to sync and sync.
iTunes remembers the sync profile per device.

  • Is it possible for other people to download my files in iCloud?

is it possible for other people with different Apple ID to download my files in iCloud?

The only way for you to allow others to access iCloud documents at the moment is by trusting your Apple ID log in and password - NOT good for security as they would also have access to your e-mail/notes/calendar/address book and reminders !
With this information others could log in at this web address in just about any browser ,
click on the iWork button, select the app Notes/Pages/Keynote
    https://www.icloud.com
    Here they can download/upload documents.
Mouce over the document you want to download and a choice of PDF/Word (.doc) or native iWork formats can be made.Just click the download button
To upload simply drag and drop a document from Finder/Windows explorer or the desktop onto the browser window !
The missing function however is there is NO ONLINE editing !
Now if Apple would incorporate an invite and e-mail address system similar to dropbox they that would solve the security issue I think.

  • Create Support Message via Help - Limitation for certain people

    Hi,
i try to configure my SolMan, so that only a couple of person can create a support message with Help -> Create Support Message.
I look for a role, but can't find anything to solve this issue. Does anyone now what I have to customize, that only people I allow can create a support message in that way?
    Thanks in advance
    Michael

Thanks for your replies, but this doesn't solve my problem
    1) When I don't create a business partner for those people, they can create messages, but then then the filed "message processor" would be empty in SolMan
    2) which role do you mean? I tested with a test-user without any role - he can create support messages as well...
    regards
    Michael
