Triple Boot Macbook Pro

Hi, so a while back, I used bootcamp to add a windows 7 partition on my Macbook Pro.
Recently, I wanted to try Ubuntu 12.10 on the same macbook pro, so using reFIt (a bootloader) and now reFINd, I installed it. Now I can access both my linux partition and my mac osx partition, but I get a black screen stating that the windows os is missing. I've already tried using the ubuntu boot repair, and the windows repair disk. I posted this question at another forum, and I was told to create a hybrid MBR partition, but I was confused about that and wanted to see if anyone else had any suggestions.
Thanks

I upgraded to lion when it first came out, and again to mountain lion when it came out. Windows worked perfectly fine before I installed ubuntu.
What's strange is when I created my ubuntu partition I was told to make two partitions, one for the swap disk (1.1GB) and one for my actual linux partition (It's not showing up here for some reason, but it was 10 GB). When I did diskutil list a few days ago this is what it looked like:
/dev/disk0
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *250.1 GB disk0
1: EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 192.4 GB disk0s2
3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3
4: Microsoft Basic Data 10.0 GB disk0s4
5: Linux Swap 1.1 GB disk0s5
6: Microsoft Basic Data BOOTCAMP 45.7 GB disk0s6
/dev/disk2
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: Apple_partition_scheme *17.3 MB disk2
1: Apple_partition_map 32.3 KB disk2s1
2: Apple_HFS Flash Player 17.3 MB disk2s2
But now it looks different without me changing anything...

• Can't boot MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2010) after installing the update SMC 1.6

First for a long time was a white screen and noisy cooler
After the system battery icon was crossed out and the indicator on the left side of macbook does not show anything and everything worked cooler at high speed (he was cold macbook)
After reboot appeared and the system has stopped running
Few days ago I have installed Mac Os X 10.6.4 but when the system had started working I saw my desktop it was at least 2-3 sec, after that macbook went to sleep mode. I pressed any key macbook and system started working, but without lighting screen. I used bright lamp and saw that all shortcuts and indicators (like wifi, battery etc.) have appeared on my desktop. After 2-3 sec macbook went to sleep mode again. Pressing on buttons and light from lamp gave me possibility to done update to 10.6.5 and after to 10.6.8. But at the end situation was not changed.
When I boot macbook with using install DVD, I can use all utilities (disk utility, network util etc.) and macbook don't goes to sleep mode and screen has light. In my opinion reason of this - not correct installation latest EFI or SMC updates. I tried to install EFI update 2.0 and SMC 1.5 for 10.6.5/10.6.8, but system showed me that I can't do this update. I'll try to find some way to make EFI update, maybe this would help me solve this problem. P.S. answer from Applle support: Our updates can't to break your macbook... it's just coincidence. Probability theory it's just mystification

If somebody has same problem, welcome to discussion. Maybe we'll find way to solve this problem... Or Apple will make fixes for us.

After some time, I found answer how I can repair my MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2010). As I was writing early - Mac Os X update SMC 1.6 broke my computer.

• How do I install base system on external drive to boot MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook Pro 2.2 core 2 duo. I use an external HD for storage. Want to make external drive bootable (i.e. to run apps like DiskWarrior on MacBookPro).
How do I install the base system?
Thank you.

First, be sure the external drive is partitioned using the GUID partition scheme. If it isn't then you will have to re-partition the drive which will erase anything you have on the drive.
Second, the external drive must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
Last, boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer and install OS X onto the external drive. Do not do an Erase and Install if you don't want to erase the external drive. You can customize the installation to omit any additional components you don't need such as language localizations, Asian Fonts, unneeded printer drivers, etc.

• How long to boot MacBook pro 13" late 2011?

It takes 1 minute 30 seconds to startup my macbook pro 13" late 2011 (2.4ghz i5 processor, 4GB RAM)
This seems like a long time? I have Microsoft Office and Photoshop installed, will this slow it down?
Thanks!

if you have a normal hard drive installed - it usually takes a minute to desktop when you power up.
check your login items to see what's loading when you first power up your Macbook.
you can also go to disk utility and verify your disk permissions - repair them if errors are found then restart your Macbook.
see if that helps your booting time.
good luck

• Non-booting MacBook Pro, ?? on startup screen, more....

I swapped out a hard drive on my MacBook Pro (unibody, 2.26, 4GB RAM) and was going to wipe the drive and reinstall OS 10.5. I selected the Install Disk from 'startup disk' in system preferences and restarted. I heard 2 closely-spaced chimes, then nothing. I tried booting with the option key pressed and a padlock appeared on the screen with a elongated button and an arrow. I tried entering my password and nothing happened. Okay. Reboot and eject the install disk. A long wait, the folder with the question mark appears. Okay. Reboot and tried to reset PRAM via the 'vulcan grip.' Nothing. No chimes, no restarts, no nothing. Okay. Try Target Disk mode. Nothing. Return original HD. Same results. Help!!!!!?????
Thanks.

• Non-booting MacBook Pro

I'm trying to figure out some issues with a friend's MacBook Pro (2008/Lion). There's something going on with the hard drive and it won't boot normally. It hangs on the grey screen with spinning gear. I've booted into the Recovery partition and run First Aid and tried single user mode running fsck -fy. Both say the drive is OK, but it still won't boot. I can boot into safe mode but once the progress bar disappears I get the same spinning gear. Now I'm trying to access it via Firewire Target mode. The machine goes in the mode and shows in my MacPro Finder but as soon as I try to access files or use Disk Warrior, the drive apparently stops or seizes and I get a spinning beachball and can't access the drive.
Is there anything else I can try? Why does it mount as a FW drive, but can't be accessed?

• Can't Boot Macbook Pro from CD, Tried 3 known Working Discs, Can boot Ubuntu

I am trying to boot my macbook pro with the Snow Leopard CDROM. Regardless of how I attempt to boot I get the white screen with the Apple logo and nothing else. I've let it sit there for 45 minutes at one point. There is no apparent disc activity at this point.
I've tried holding C while booting. I've trying runing the Installer while booted of the internal disk, selecting Utilities, and then Restart and same problem.
I've tried 3 known working copies of Snow Leopard our helpdesk uses on a daily bases. None of them have any scratches and are quickly mounted and easily redeable in my mac when booted from internal disk.
I can boot fine from an Ubuntu 11 64-bit CDROM.
I've tried reseting the PRAM multiple times. I've tried booting into firmware mode but that doesn't seem to work. (cmd-option-O-F)
Very frustrating.

Is this the gray disc that came with the machine, or is it a retail disc? If it's retail, did the machine come with SL installed? If so, you can't use a retail disc.

• Pleeease help! cant boot macbook pro running leopard!

i am having a huge problem with my macbook pro running leopard. i was originally trying to partition my hardrive for windows with boot camp but that failed cause it "couldnt move files" so i ran disk utility with the installation disk to fix the harddrive.
anyways next thing i know i boot my computer and it stops at the blue login screen before it has the option to login with the spinning wheel and does a loop of blue screens with spinning wheel. wont boot in safe mode and it always stops at the same screen. so i looked around on the web and it sounded like a had to archive and install. so i did that and then half an hour in it told me i had a corrupt file and i had to restart.
so i restarted and then it brought me straight to the leopard installation screen and told me that "mac osx cannot be upgraded to v10.5 on your computer" because "macosx 10.4 or later could not be found"!!! i used the disk util to repair the hard drive but it said everything was fine. i cant safe boot, it wont give me the option to archive and install again its only giving me the option to erase my whole harddrive!
pleeease help! i have not backed up in 2 months! is there anyway to get this to start up or back up some files from this point?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
Ok... if you have another Mac, you can do Firewire Target Disk Mode
To transfer files using FireWire:
Shut down the computer to be used as a disk. Leave the other computer on.
Connect the two computers with a FireWire cable.
Start up the computer to be used as a disk, then open System Preferences, click Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. (Or, start it up while holding down the T key.)
A disk icon appears on the desktop of the other computer.
Transfer files by dragging them to and from the disk.
Eject the disk by dragging its icon to the Trash. (While you drag, the Trash icon changes to an Eject icon.)
On the computer you used as a disk, push the power button to shut it down, and then disconnect the FireWire cable.

• Impossible to boot MacBook Pro Retina ! impossible to start in single user mode, Openfirmware password set, but safari works!

I have got a Macbook pro retina.
I have done 2 partitions on the SSD drive. 1 for the OS and 1 for the user (with a kind of ln -s /Home/myself /Volume/Part2/myself
I was watching a movie (with VLC) in full screen for a while and I wanted to escape. Impossible, and impossible to reboot.
When I start, I have a directory with a question mark.
I have a Open firmware passwords set (that I remember).
I cannot reset PRAM. (I can not change the RAM amount inside the commuter as this is a retina model)
I cannot start in verbose mode.
I can choose a disk to boot. I see only the OS drive and not the user partition, and no 'recovery partition'. It seems that i need to do a fsck -yff on the user partition but how ?
I can start the OS partition, and i can choose 'guess' or 'myself'. If i choose myself, I have an error message :'there is a error, the session can not start'. If I start with the guess account, I restart, and then I can browse the internet with safari (this is how I am writing this text!)
=> How can i repair the partition ? (open a terminal, boot in single user mode ...?)
best regards.

Actually, the recovery partition was there, but was not shown as my user partition. I have seen that reseting the PRAM and changing the ram could remove the open firemware password. So i have turn the computer on until the battery was empty. Then I boot about 20 times, and unplug the power supply after few seconds at different step of the booting pricess. At last, the screen default resolution when booting changed, I undertood that i succeeded, and I was able to enter.
Then I boot in single user mode, removed the open firmware password, activated the root user, and everything was fine now !

• SAP Netweaver 7.01 trail on a dual boot MacBook Pro

Hello, I would like to know if SAP Netweaver will work on a MacBook Pro. I am planning to dual boot Windows 7 basic using a software called Bootcamp which is native to Mac OS X 10.5
System Spec :
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
*I have two Questions :*
1) Will SAP Netweaver 7.01 trail work with Windows 7 32 bit basic edition ?
2) Are the system spec above sufficient to run SAP ?
Thank's for your time.

I'm having lots of problems installing SAP NetWeaver 7.01 SR1 on my MacBook with WinXP Pro SP2 running in Parallels. I have allocated 1 GB RAM to WinXP and changed the Paging to 4096 MB which is the maximum. I have over 150 GB allocated to the C: drive.
I also changed the number of processes to 1. I am assuming that the change to the C:\Program Files\sapinst_instdir\NW701\AS-ABAP\ADA\CENTRAL\inifile.xml file will do the trick.
<fld name="migmonJobNum">
<properties>
<property name ="doc-long" value ="
Number of parallel Migration Monitor jobs." />
</properties>
<strval><![CDATA[1]]>
</strval>
</fld>
I tried to continue the old installation that I had to stop since it had taken more than 12 hours on the Phase 12 of 27 - Create Database Schema step. If this does not work (this is my third hard time trying to do this after having to uninstall), I think I will get VMware and just install this on the Windows 2003 Server if I can't get this working on XP.
Since you were able to get it working on XP, technically, I should be able to even though it's running in Parallels. There must be a way to monitor the MaxDB database activity to see why the Create Database Schema is taking so long.
Thanks for you help in advance,
Jay

• How to get kernel on a non booting MacBook pro? recently ran out of enough memory on start up disk. will boot to internet restore or from ox dvd. has anyone every had this problem? I can't even get in free up space.

How to get to kernel on a MacBook pro with booting issues. Internet restore has not bee successful. It will not boot from 10.5 install disc cause I recently upgraded to lastest ox.
Any help is appreciated.

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
Thanks for the advice, Bee

• Boot macbook pro HD with another mac

Hi,
My Macbook Pro won't boot up because its logic board is dead. I need to retrieve the data from the HD. What is the best way to do it?
Thanks.

Remove the drive from the broken Mac and connect it to the other Mac with a SATA to USB adapter. You will then be able to copy your files off it to the other Mac.

• Kernel Panic when boot MacBook Pro (related to ACPI driver)

Hi,
since the first day that I received my MacBook Pro I have a kernel panic sometimes (not always). When it occurs i have to hard reset the computer, and normally it comes another kernel panic (a second). Finally, in the third boot, it boots and all is ok, the system goes very well.
I only see one reference to this problem, a flickr photo at http://www.flickr.com/photos/christophermar/108747167/
The kernel panic is like this:

Well, finally I phoned Apple to change for new

I hope that new MacBook don't have this problem
because I fall in love with this "laptop"
Glad you are getting this taken care, and also glad I'm not the only one with this problem. I had kernel panics with my MBP, so I sent it back to amazon for a refund. It was my only real problem with the machine, though, which I loved otherwise. But kernel panics are a serious defect.

• 18 minutes to boot macbook pro

My MacBook Pro takes 18 minutes to boot up. What can I do to correct this?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
