Trouble adding simple transition between clips

Hi, for the life of me I can't solve this simple problem. I'm used to using Premiere and this was easy but FCP is giving me grief. I'm assembling a simple sequence of video clips in the timeline. Each clip is at least 3 seconds long and they are snapped together in the timeline. I want to add a 1 second cross dissolve centered over where each clip joins the other. Everytime I drag the cross dissolve over the area it makes a tiny sliver of a transition. I can't make it bigger. I should be able to grab each side and drag it out to make it bigger but nothing happens. I've tried other transitions also but I keep getting this tiny sliver of a grey transition. The timeline is stretched out far so the default 1 second transition should appear large, but it's not.
A friend has said he's had this happen before as well but he can't remember how he got around it.
This is driving me crazy, any help is appreciated.

#1 Transitions "Insufficient Content"
Shane's Stock Answer #1:
You need to make sure that your clips have enough media (called 'handles') at the beginning of the incoming clip and at the end of the outgoing clip for the transition. For example, if you have a 1 second (30 frame) dissolve, your in and out point need to be at least 15 frames from the edge of the clip.
What you are running into is that you are marking an out point at the end of a clip then adding a cross dissolve, say 20 frames in duration. Since the dissolve is centered on the cut, it will start 10 frames before the cut, and try to go 10 frames AFTER the cut...which it can't do.
What you need to do is plan how long your dissolve will be and back-time your cut so that it works.

a full 1 second crossfade reaches 15 frames into each clip. So, if you want to change a cut to a crossfade, there has to be at least 15 additional frames of each clip.
Say you're trying to crossfade from one clip into the very first frame of a second clip. FCP cannot 'create' 15 more frames of the second clip to do a crossfade. If they're not there, you're out of luck.
FCP has to extend the end of your first clip by 1/2 of your transition length, and the beginning of your second clip by 1/2 of your transition length, so those frames need to be in your system. The nature of a crossfade is mixing two clips together.

OK, I understand what you mean now! I assumed you were asking about the normal Fade In or Fade Out using the transition from the Transitions panel. But I guess you mean the Fade function specific to a Cutaway. When you double-click on a Cutaway the Inspector opens. Here you can set the Cutaway Fade duration. But as you say, it only provides for both fade in and fade out as one operation - you can't set the fades individually (it's both or nothing).
BUT, try the method outlined by Karsten Schluter above. It will give you the same effect and will enable you to fade either side of the Cutaway (or add other transitions).

  • How to apply transitions between clips in the same track?

    Hey guys,
I'm in Uni on Final Cut Pro 5 and all the videos and discussions tell of how to apply transitions between clips in the same track.
I like to have my clips on different tracks so that I can overlap them at specific points but I don't know how to do this?
If I have track one. . .which ends. . .and have track 2 beginning below that (and have it overlapped for a few seconds) I don't know how to enable the transition at the point where track 2 begins.
    Can anyone help?

    Yep I understand that.
Let's say I overlap track 2 as I don't like the beginning of it. . .so I want the transition from the end of track one to track two to occur in the middle of track 2 - should I just trim the track to the point I want the transition to occur as opposed to have it overlapping?

  • How do I make transitions between clips smooth?

how do I make transitions between clips smooth?  Right now, when I play my video in imovie, the clips freeze or jump between clips.

Have you tried sharing the final movie using the Share menu, or, alternatively use FILE/FINALIZE PROJECT?
The final product shouldn't have any lag. iMovie itself should not have any lag, but could depending on your Memory and hard disk configuration.

I can't add transitions between clips, but between generated media?! Any ideas?

I am assumming you are working with "connected clips" which are either above or below the main storyline "track" (the one you put your first project clip onto when you started the project). You can only add transitions to clips that are on either the primary storyline or on a created storyline.  Select the clips you are working with then choose the Clip menu and the Create Storyline selection. Make sure snap is set to assure your clips are really butted up against each other.  Then apply the transitions.

  • How can I do a simple fade transition between clips??

I'm trying to learn my new Premiere Elements 9. I am a simple man, with simple needs. I like to just do a simple fade transition between video clips. There is no "fade" option on the transitions for PE9, I have tried "cross disolve" and "non-additive disolve", and they are freaking wierd. The one that comes the closest is cross-dissolve, It fades out the first clip fine, but the follow on clip starts with an awkward momentary freeze frame, which is not acceptable.
    Any thoughts?
    Clem

A "fade" is a just that. It fades to black.
Fades to black are far from weird. They are very useful for indicating a complete change of subject or chapter in a long video story.
I think you are using the wrong descriptions,
Probably you want a cross dissolve where one scene slowly dissapears while the next one appears, the average picture level being constant.
There are two of them provided in transitions. Cross dissolve (what you call a fade) and non additive dissolve.
They both work perfectly if you apply them correctly and you have set up your project correctly to match your video camera or slides. (see many other posts on this)
You simply drag the 'transition icon' for the dissolve to the cut line between the two clips. Cant be any easier than that can it?
If you are seeing jerky results, it is because your computer is not fast enough to preview unrendered video (or set up right) - so render it!
As I said there should be no red lines at the top of the timeline where the transition is (otherwise render just that red part of the timeline)
    More advanced:-
The dissolve period plainly shows in the video track. You can have it before, centered or after the cut depending on where you want the dissolve to start or finish in relation to moving objects in the video. (Right click and select effect properties to adjust)
You can even change the speed of the dissolve by dragging the edges of the effect boix in the timeline

  • Transition between clips

    Hi again,
I'm having trouble putting the "doors" transition between my clips - have zoomed in and there is no smaller clips in between. If I have not allowed for the extra frames (or handles) after trimming clips, is there any way to remedy this?
    Thanks.
P.S. I can actually put the transition in, but other frames I don't want show up even though I have trimmed everything off and deleted and closed gap between clips!

Snap is a function available (toggle with the S key) in the Timeline, where when a Clip, or a Transition, is near to the beginning, or end, of a Clip, the object being dragged will "jump" to those junctures. This makes dragging and dropping Clips, for instance, onto the Timeline, so that they are adjacent to previous, or following Clips. I leave it on most of the time, as it speeds up dragging, and dropping. It will also function, if, one is click-dragging the Tail of one Clip, and they want it to expand only to the Head of the next Clip.
Now, remember, Snap sees the entire Timeline - all Video and Audio Tracks. If one has Clips on those, even if they are scrolled out of view, Snap will function on them, as well. This can get a bit confusing, when many Tacks are populated, especially if they ARE scrolled out of view.
Snap gets in the way of trying to do things like repair OOS (Out Of Sync) issues. As one slide the Audio Clip, it will want to jump to the beginning, or end of another Clip. That is usually NOT what the editor wants. There, I turn it OFF, so I can effortlessly slide my Audio exactly the number of frames that I want, without having to "fight" Snap. Again, I turn it back on, when I go back to general editing.
There is one instance, where it can cause issues. Do not know if this has been changed, as of PrE7. It is especially common, if one is zoomed out on the horizontal view of the Timeline. Basically, if one is too forceful, when dragging and placing an Asset onto the Timeline and they "jam" this new Clip up to the Tail of another with too much "force," Snap will allow one to jump slightly past the Tail of the existing Clip by a Frame, or two. That alone would not be a big deal. What happens to those Frames, however, can be. They get sheared off and then are placed at the end of the last Clip on the Timeline. If one shortens the Duration of several Clips along the way, these one-two Frame "orphans" stay out at the end. One can end up with a desired Duration of say 00;10;39;00, but in reality the Timeline might be 00;11;00;00. It is because of the orphans way out past where the editor "thought" the Timeline should end, and they are often out of sight, unless one hits the \ [backslash] key, to zoom out to the full view of the Timeline. Then, the orphans will be seen. One of the last things that I always do, before Export is hit \, to see my entire Timeline. This checks for orphans, and also any Clips that I forgot.
If Snap is OFF, what happens when you have a Clip on the Timeline and drag another "over" it, is the first Clip is "rolled up," i.e. its Out Point is moved in, from where it was set. Now, there are no orphans, but one has shortened the first Clip, and that is usually NOT what they want to do. Careful, non-forceful use of Snap will allow one to butt the dragged Clip right up to the previous one - just do not JAM it in there. Be gentle, like you were working with original film and not digital media.
    Hope that this helps,
    Hunt

I finished editing my seperate clips and now want to insert transitions between the clips, but that menu option is grayed out, so is the Movie Properties menu. What do I do?

when i try to drag the cross dissolve transition between to video clips "avi uncompressed"
a small x pops up beside the cursor.
is there a reason for this ?

    Oh boy, here we go.
A handle is unused media at the front and back of a clip. If you are using a clip in its entirety in your timeline, there is no way to add a transition to it.

  • Transitions Between Clips on Different

In FCP 7 I often had an interview clip in the timeline and then I would add a photo or b-roll in the video track above the interview. I would then often add a fade or other transition to this b-roll and it would fade nicely from the interview to the b-roll and back, even though they were on different tracks. It appears that Final Cut Pro X no longer lets you do this. Has anyone found a work around? When I try all the various methods of adding a transition, none of them work. Is this another wonderful feature that has been removed in the "update"?
    Kurtis

I do it in FCP exactly the same as I did it in 7. Put a cross dissolve at the beginning of the clip and it fades up.

  • Trouble adding a transition

I added to clips to a sequence without a transition, but now I want to add one. I have been trying to follow the instructions in the electronic manual, but it is not working. I have been trying two different ways:
Putting the play head between the two clips and trying to select that point (I also tried adding a marker at that point) and using Command-T, but nothing happens.
I put a Mark In near the end of the first clip and a Mark Out near the beginning of the second clip, but Command-T results in a message "Insufficient Content for Edit." The same thing happens even if I move those in and out points farther apart.
Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Ben

If the OUT and IN marks are just at the end of the first clip and at the beginning of the second clip, respectively, there is not enough media for the transition to work. Each of the 2 clips must have a "handle", that is additional media both on the right of the OUT point of the first clip and before the IN point of the second clip.
To add handles, simply move the OUT point left by 15 frames (for example) and the IN point right by the same amount, to allow a 1 sec transition to work. If the 2 clips were already in the timeline close the new 1 sec gap (drag the second clip to its left) and apply the transition.
    Piero
Note: shortening the clips by moving their IN and OUT points always discards some media you captured, but this cannot be avoided; on the other hand you should always make sure additional footage is shot before and after the main clips, if you want to make room for transitions.

  • How do I do smooth transitions between clips?

After trimming clips, what type of effects do I need to use for smoother transitions? I tried several types of video transitions, for example Crossover Dissolve between the clips. But I want to show as if I never did any cuts or clippings even though I have done it. Did I make this clear?

You may want to ask yourself, "Why do I want to use a transition?"
As you think about this question watch any network TV program and look for the transitions.  You will generally find very few transitions in a professional video. Those you do find will generally be dips to black rather than cross-dissolves.  You will generally find cross-disolves being used only where the editor wanted to give a sense of time changing.
This s a situation in which less is more.  I believe that a 1 sec cross-dissolve draws more attention to itself than would a 0 second cut.

  • How do i include the text in the transitions between pictures?

this is my first time to ever use premiere elements and i've blindly stumbled around.  i'm making a glorified slide show it seems.  i have captions or text on every one of the pictures in my video but when i add transitions between the pictures i can't seem to get them to change with the picture. it just stays there until the transition is done and the next picture comes up? how can i get the text to do the same thing as what the picture is doing? help!!

OK, let's see if this is what you have now: you have the stills on Video Track 1, and these butt up to each other. You have added various Transitions between them. You have done your caption Titles and they are on Video Track 2 (or another above the stills). To get those Titles to also transition, you will want add a Transition to them too, or you just have a butt-cut. The reason that I asked about the Transitions used was that if you had, say Dip-to-Black, or Cross-Dissolves for the stills, the Cross-Dissolves would be fine for the Titles. If you have used other Transitions, you will most likely want to use something that is close to the Transitions on the stills, or will want to shorten the Titles a bit, use a Dissolve on them, to keep them out of the way with the other Transitions. It will depend on which ones you have used.
Personally, I seldom use many different Transitions, so it's not an issue, but with some, I would definitely do the Dissolve before they started, and then Dissolve into my new Title, once they have completed.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Transition between photos

I have been having a problem with the transition between clips on my iMovie. it still goes from clip to clip but is really choppy. I've tried removing the photo and replacing it but that hasn't seemed to help. I want a slide show that is smooth and not cheesy looking. can someone help me?

That sounds like a rendering problem with your computer. If you download iStat from the internet and go to System Preferences and turn it on, does your computer show that it is using all its CPU or memory to play back your video? If so, leave iMovie for a while and then come back to it and play it again. Is it now smooth?
