Trouble loging in

Question

Hi I’ve just started with Oracle, I’ve got 10g R1 on WinXP Pro. I’m trying to make a simple database to hand on to a professional at a later date, after lots of trouble trying to get Enterprise Manager to even start, and lots of reloads etc I finally have EM up, but now it tells me:
"The database status is currently unavailable. It is possible that the database is in mount or nomount state. Click 'Startup' to obtain the current status and open the database. If the database cannot be opened, click 'Perform Recovery' to perform an appropriate recovery operation."
When I try to go to Startup it asks for HOST login.
I am assuming that the first OS login is either my Win Admin UN and PW or the Oracle 'Host' and my PW as created for the DB ei:
I created a trial db called “trial” with PW “trial” at http://mycomp.home:5500/em
so my entries should be:
UN: mycomp
PW: trial
UN: SYSMAN
PW: trial
Is this correct? as I get error message that PW is incorrect.

Thank you Damorgan and Madrid, I have done as much as I understand from what you have sent (being new to all this) I then started SQL*Plus and ‘SQL> SELECT STATUS FROM V$INSTANCE;’ said ‘STATUS --- OPEN’, I then opened http://adrianlt.home:5500/em/ and tried to sign in via ‘Start Up’ using UN: SYS and PW: trial but keep getting “wrong password for user”, I reset it as suggested but no change. When I type ‘SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tab$;’ I get: ‘ERROR at line 1: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist’.
What is my next step? I am still confused by the request for the HOST OS UN & PW which one is it? My Admin UN & PW or UN: mycomp, PW: trial, or UN: SYS, PW: trial?
The listener.ora is not starting, I had to create it at C:\oracle\product\10.1.0\db_1\Network\Admin as there was nothing there. I have:
encaps.cfg, master.cfg, storage, sqlnet.ora and listener.ora.
Do I need more?
