Trouble reconnecting XDCam HD media to FCP

I am trying to automatically reconnect media that has been deleted from capture drive. Original media is on an XDCam disc,(imported using XDCam transfer plugin) but FCP will only let me reconnect it by manually locating the files. I have searched and others seem to have the same issue - has anyone come up w/ a simple solution.
Thanks

Hey Shane, time to take the red pill I think mate
According to this thread, our OP is using XDCAM HD not XDCAM EX. He used Sony's XDCAM Transfer application (PDZK-P1) and did not use FCP's Log and Transfer interface together with Sony's XDCAM EX Log and Transfer plugin, (PDZK-LT1), as the the latter is only currently compatible with XDCAM EX media.
Nick
FCP allows you to set a Capture Scratch directory but it does not limit you to only using that directory, the application is perfectly happy accessing your media from outside the defined Capture Scratch directory, indeed from wherever you may choose to store it, but obviously it is a good idea that you keep media in locations that are suitable for media storage and playback, and obviously its best you keep your media in an organized manner.
Sony's XDCAM Transfer app does not have access to FCP's preferences data and so cannot know which directory you have set as your Capture Scratch within FCP. So if you originally imported your footage using Sony's XDCAM Transfer app then it would not naturally have been in FCP's Capture Scratch directory anyway unless a) you set that directory as XDCAM Transfer's Import location, or b) you moved the imported media there after the fact. You can set up your preference for XDCAM Transfer's Import Location, in the XDCAM Transfer > Preferences >> Import tab ... by default it is set to your OS X user account's Movies folder.
Now that you are reimporting/have reimported the media (again using Sony's XDCAM Transfer app) you have the same option to set the Import location according to your FCP Capture Scratch directory, or to move the footage there after the fact ... either way, whether you do our you don't, FCP itself will not care as long as the media resides in a suitable media storage and playback location.
Hope that helps
Andy

  • Reconnecting Full res media

    Hi,
here's a quick one for all you editing guru's out there:
I have a project with ProRes 422 media; I created a lowres offline edit using Media Manager's recompress option. After the rough editing, I again take media manager and create a new project with the "Create offline" option (Chosing the correct HD sequence settings) in order to reconnect the fullres media. Slight problem: since I imported the ProRes media into FCP and did not capture it from tape, the media has no reel number and therefore stays online in the newly created offline project.
What is the best workflow to do this correctly ? Simply select all media an apply "make offline" ? I googled for hours and found lots of workflows about offline/online editing, all assuming that you work with tape. Does anyone have an example that deals with media imported from disk ?
    Cheers,
    Bob

You can still assign a reel number to your footage in the browser, a little more challenging after the fact but doable. FCP will argue you are about to change blah blah say OK.
If I were at the point you are I would attempt to manually reconnect but it's tedious in my experience verifying the TC of a particular clip before reconnecting, believe I'd export a version of the offline w TC reader applied to each clip as a ref while reconnecting. especially once MM generates numbers following the clip name and how organized that was from the get go.
I might be tempted to set my easy setup to the required format and paste my offline into the new finishing sequence and replace with hi res that way. I could see the shot I've cut and see what I replaced that with in the reconnect if it's the same I'm golden, if not I have command z by side

  • I can't upload or import videos from my iphoto library, into final cut pro x.  When i click, IMPORT MEDIA in FCP, It lists iPhoto Library as GRAY, and will not let me access it.  I need the videos out of there.  I have tried every way I can think of.

    Like the title says...
I can't upload or import videos from my iphoto library, into final cut pro x.  When i click, IMPORT MEDIA in FCP, It lists 'iPhoto Library' as GRAY, and will not let me select it.  I need the videos out of there.  I have tried every way I can think of.
I have also tried from the iphoto side, to export the videos or share them to final cut.  I have had no luck.
I have tried to drag and drop indidual video clips from iphoto to fcp, and the programs simply do not respond to each other
I can see in the OLDER version of final cut pro x, where it has IMPORT FILES as an option, it was possible.  I see this on forums and youtube videos of the older versions.
However, the newer version that i have, does not have IMPORT 'FILES' as an option, it is simply all lumped together as IMPORT 'MEDIA'
    Thank You for the Help

at the end, you say "import preferences", which program are you describing?
So im safer using footage that is remotely being pulled from iphoto...
    vs
using footage that is imported into FCP from imovie?
Is there anything i can do in fcp to make this footage more reliable or safer or more stable as i pull remotely from iphoto?
All the footage, and all the libraries to all programs, or on a new pegasus 12tb raid 5 setup fyi.

  • Can't import Media into FCP X

In the last week or two when I try to import media into FCP X I end up with a very dark and locked import screen.  The only way I can recover is to force quit FCP X.  It doesn't always happen but it is getting more and more frequent.
I have not updated to Marverik and I'm running the latest version of FCP X on the same iMac I have used since installation.
Any suggestions beacuse it really is starting to beome very, very frustrating.
    Thanks

They system is hanging up, waiting on some command to finish, which is not able to.  So let's look at ways to fix this.  Becasue you never want to do an upgrade to fix problems.  Only upgrade a proerly working system.  Otherwise, you may just be hauling old problems into a new envoronment, and making things worse.  I've seen it a lot over the years.
First, verify that all of your drives have at least 15% of their total capacity as free space.  Not enough free space on any dirve can cause similar odd behaviors.
Second, you need to do some housee cleaning.  Start by downloading and running the free application "Preference Manager" from Digital Rebellion (dot com).  Use it to trash the FCPX preference files.  It is easy and safe to you.  None of your media or projects will be touched.  After that, run Disk Utility to "Repair" all of your drives (ignore "Verify", total waste of time).
If none of that helps, I'd recommand you download the free application "FCS Remover" from Digital Rebellion.  Use it to uninstall FCPX.  Some folks say to just move the app from the Applications folder to the Trash.  That leaves a bunch of other files hanging around that could be bad.  Use this app.  Once you've uninstalled FCPX, launch the App Store, go to the Purchases section, and FCPX will have an "Install" button.  Reinstall a fresh copy, see if that helps.

  • Can't import from Sony XDCAM memory card to FCP 6

I can't import from Sony XDCAM memory card to FCP 6.01 HD. Am using Macbook Pro, 2 gig of RAM. This is my first time NOT using tape. I can copy the files off the memory card onto an external drive (to free up the card for pro crew's next day's shoot), but can't import either to FCP. Do I need to convert the files in some way before FCP can read them? Need to fix this problem fast as the crew are off to Nepal for 2 week shoot.

    Laura,
First, I'm assuming that you're referring to the XDCAM EX. You'll need to install the FCP 6.0.2 upgrade, which contains the XDCAM EX codecs.
Second, You'll need to install the PDZK-P1 Transfer Application, and use that to import your EX clips into FCP. I just noticed that there is a new version available, 2.5.1 which is labeled specifically for Tiger/Leopard. I haven't tested this version yet, and will report back on any stability issues. We're currently running version 2.1.1, without many issues.

  • P2 Media Crashing FCP

I have a lot of P2 media from a variety of P2 cards and have imported it without any big problems.
The contents of one of the cards however crashes FCP every time I try to import it. I can see the media fine on Panasonic's P2CMS reader however so I know it's there.
Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this, or better yet, some kind of work-around so I can get this footage into my project?
    Thanks!

It was recorded on an HVX200 and then copied to a backup drive (which has been our workflow for the whole project). It was shot out of town, so I don't have the camera or the P2 device to repair it.
I'm importing the P2 media via FCP's P2 media import window. Is there any other way? (It's worked for all the other media on this project.)

  • Troubling importing from DVD- "Media Offline"

Hi there. I'm trying to import a nonencoded DVD into Final Cut Pro; it said it did it just fine, but when I removed the DVD the imported media in FCP was marked with a red slash and an indicator that the imported media was "offline." Does this mean that FCP was merely reading the media and never imported it? How do I get it into Final Cut for my use?

Judging from the OP it is assumed that the files were imported successfully and Jack Bauer was able to edit the files with a machine gun etiquette and hand grenade consistency. I think they're just quicktime files on a DVD and not actually an authored DVD with .VOB files. The mention of nonencoded DVD and that FCP imported it just fine are factors that lead me to this conclusion.
I don't think their problem is that the DVD was not properly converted to an editable format but rather the issue of importing files directly from a DVD thereby using the DVD as the source location which is causing the media connection to go offline when the DVD is ejected.

  • Having trouble reconnecting media

    Hi,
I recently had to upgrade my internal RAID, in favor of some larger drives. I now have three 1T drives, striped as my media scratch disk. So I backed up the entire drive. Removed the old drives, put in new ones, and am now in the process of reconnecting everything. With an exact copy of the last drive, if I simply click and drag what was there, will my Color projects open as before?

I fear it is something along those lines. I did set the default directory back to where I had it before. Final cut pro works fine, but Color just doesn't wanna do it.

  • Can't Reconnect Media - Converting FCP 4.5 to 7. version

    Hello All
I was hoping someone might have an idea to help me.
I am converting all my FCP projects from FCP4.5 to FCP7.0
and I have a couple of files that I can't re connect too ??
The files show up as "off line"
I will manually search for them, and find them ( the files is where is is supposed to be )
I ask FCP to CONNECT to the file and
I get an EMPTY warning box - empty expect for a ! and Cancel or Ok bubbles
FCP does not tell me what is wrong with the file...?
Sometimes FCP will say that there are not enough layers in the Photoshop file ??
It seems that each time I open the project... I get a different warning !
These files run fine in FCP 4.5 ?
There are the same number of layers ??
Is this s Photoshop thing ? or a FCP thing ??
I've never run into this before ?
Any Ideas how to fix this ???
    Thanks

    Well that was easy.....!?
I guess I was just trying to fix a problem that wasn't a problem !
    Thanks David !

  • Can I change managed media to external media in FCP 10.1?

I just upgraded to Mavericks and FCP 10.1.1 and I think both are great software so far.
I am working on a documentary with about 250 GB of HD footage. The footage for the project was all on the same external drive where I am saving the Library, and I thought I chose "Leave files in Place" when I imported to save hard drive space.
I have done a lot of keywording, markers, synchronizing clips, color balance tests, etc. though no real timeline editing at this point.
But I discovered today that the Library is huge: ~270 GB. That suggests I imported the media to be "managed media" rather than external. This means the media is taking up twice as much space on the hard drive as it needs to.
Is there a way to remove the imported media from the Library but keep the pointers to the original media and also keep all the keywords, markers, etc. I have already done? I'd like to switch it to "external" rather than "managed" as if I had chosen that when I imported (which I must not have done). But I don't want a new copy of the media files (see Note #1 below), I just want to point back to the source footage on the same disk.
    Notes:
I found info about using "Consolidate" and foolishly tried that. Now the Library in question is reduced to ~45 GB and there is a folder I saved the files to that is ~250 GB. So the external drive now has a 45 GB Library, a 250 GB Consolidated files folder and 250 GB of original footage files.  I still want to get rid of the duplicates of the original media without losing the keywords, etc.
The footage is well backed up elsewhere (2 copies of the raw footage on separate drives).
    Thank you!

    Thank you, Luis.
I appreciate your advice but am not clear about a few things.
    1.
For some of the clips in the Event Browser, "Reveal in Finder" is greyed out. I did some digging in the "Consolidated" folder in the Finder and confirmed that the three I checked just now are, in fact, there in the "Consolidated" folder and should be accessible from the "Reveal in Finder" (but aren't).
    2.
There is no "Show Original" option when I select one of the files in the Finder.
[I'm not sure how the symlink works in Mavericks (or other recent OSXs), but when I "Reveal in Finder" from the Events browser, the items in the "Consolidated" folder are listed with the name in black type and the Date Modified, Size, Kind listings in greyed out text.]
    3.
The names of the files that are revealed by "Reveal in Finder" have the date of import into FCPX plus the term "(id)" appended:
    for example: "2013-11-15 17_02_44 (id).mov"
I changed the names of the clips in the Event Browser since they had all come in with the default date-time format and I wanted to clarify for myself what the files were (there are 428 files at this point). So that name probably matches what it was originally imported as.
    4.
The footage is stored on the hard drive as the raw format recorded by the cameras (a Canon and a Sony). So the original footage is in typically byzantine folder structure.
    For the Sony footage it's:
    XDCam Raw...>
         BPAV>
              CLPR>
                   -03_8354_01>
                        -03_8354_01.MP4
                        -03_8354_01.SMI
                        ... (several other files)
So I'm wondering if FCPX has to import this footage into mangaged media since the source footage is raw.
And I'm uncomfortable deleting the original raw footage (yes it's backed up elsewhere but this is my only local backup).
So I'm back to: Can I save space by changing the currently managed media into external media without duplicating all the media (as I did when I did the "Consolidate" command)?
Or does the raw footage have to be imported and used as managed media since FCPX can't work directly with RAW Sony and Canon footage?

  • Canon XF 305 media into FCP problem

    Hello
I used two XF 305s on a shoot yesterday and then ingested the files with Log and Transfer into FCP. Worked fine with the 3 cards from one camera but Log and Transfer didn't see any of the 3 cards recorded on the second camera. I tried to add them manually but got an error message saying the folder contained unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. The cards are viewable in Canon XF Utility and seemed to have the same properties as the 3 cards that worked.  I tried making a backup and transferring that in FCP but same error message. The only way i can get them into FCP is to export to MXF and bring them in with XDCam transfer which doesn't seem to support anything bigger than 2 gb and the audio is out of sync. Frustrating day!!! I'd be SO grateful for any answers or guidance!
    Thanks
    Deborah

    Hi Deborah,
I don't mean shutter speed, I mean framerate, two different things. If you shot 50 frames per second (50p) as opposed to 25 frames per second which is 50i, Log and transfer won't recognise the clips.

  • Having trouble reconnecting render files

    Hi-
I recently had to move a project from one hard drive to another, and although all the files are relatively in the same hierarchy (only the drive itself has changed) when I load the project in it shows almost the entire timeline needing rendering, both audio and video. When they were on the original drive, the entire project was rendered and it was completely done. Now when I look in my audio render folder and it seems that the render files are all split up in three separate project files... as time went on I would "save as" in order to have permanent backups, so maybe FCP is "confused" as to which of those subfolders each audio render file is in. The video render folder is similar, spread out in two different subfolders. So it looks like my render files are split among two folders in video render, and three folders in audio render. FCP never had any trouble with this arrangement before, keeping track fine.
When I select "reconnect" from the menu, "render files" is ghosted... it won't even let me select it. Am I really going to have to re-render everything to get my project back just because the files were moved to another drive?
Or could I try putting all the render files in one drive (move them up a level and out of the subdividing folders). Would that help FCP "find" them to reconnect with them? I'd backup the entire render file folders first in case it didn't work.
    Thanks!
    Leslie Bell

I'd not change project file names mid stream... it's really best to backup OFF the computer too. A USB flash drive works really well for this... When you change project names, and capture or render, the files get put into new folders named the same as the new project file's name... sort of messy.
You can put a flash drive in a USB port, and each day, just drag your project file to it, replacing the old... that way no matter what happens to your computer, the project file will not be affected.

  • Importing Avid Media into FCP

I am taking media from an Avid Adrenaline system and want to bring it into FCP to cut. However, the disk w/Avid QTs won't appear on my desktop. It plays fine on the Windows-based Avid (XP, I believe), but my Mac won't see it. I've tried downloading Avid codecs and putting them in my Quicktime Library as recommended by the Avid website, but that doesn't seem to work. I've been told I should try exporting out of Avid using Sorenson or H.264 codecs. Anyone with experience on this so I quit wasting time?
    Thanks
    IMac Mac OS X (10.3.9) FCP 5.0.1

Actually, my experience was that it was QT 7.1.6 that broke the version of the Avid codec I had been using before, not a particular FCP update. I have not tried the codec linked to earlier in this thread.
I have noticed a unique color shift in both luma and chroma when importing Avid codec clips. It takes two color correction filters to correct for this, but I have saved this pair as favorites, and can apply them at the end of the edit.
I would much rather import the clips than recapture, as we're talking about days of recapturing, as opposed to a couple hours of importing. If I can get the codec supported, and I know how to correct for the color shift, I have no qualms about using the Avid media. My question has more to do with whether I will be able to see individual clips in the finder to attempt to import, or whether the media files will be in some format QT and FCP will not recognize, and if so, whether there is anything I can do about it. I don't expect any of the Avid logging info to come along, and I know that even if I were to have Avid editor export a batch list, a reconnect would likely be impossible, and I'd be looking at recapture.
If it were a question of simply creating new QT wrappers on the files, we'll be up against another shortcoming of FCP - the Batch Export process does nont allow the creation of reference movies...
Anyone know about what the Avid media folders look like in the finder?
    Thanks much -
    Max

  • Reconnecting to truncated media

Is there a way to reconnect media in a FCP7 sequence cut with camera footage to truncated quicktimes of colour corrected footage?
For example, the sequence is cut together with camera-length footage (from "action" to "cut") but the colour correct supplies quicktimes that are the shorter used portions between "action" and "cut" -- how do you reconnect or relink your sequence to the truncated clips without getting errors about media attributes like start and end being different?   Also, the original sequence media is Prores 422 Proxy 1920 x 1080 media and the new colour correct media is Prores 444 2048 x 1152.

FCP cannot do this on it's own. Unless the media you are trying to connect it is EXACTLY the same duration, exact same start and edit timecode, and exact tape number, FCP will not link to it.  If you have shorter clips and want to link them to longer media files, you can't. If you have long clips and you want to link them to shorter media files...you can't.
YOU CAN, however, with the app Meg mentioned....link shorter clips to longer media files. But I do not think there is any way to link larger, longer duration clips, to shorter duration media files.  That app, as far as I know, only does short clips to long files. I've used it myself for that, and it excels in doing that.
Why are you doing what you are doing? Color correction is the last phase.  I gather you are trying to recut an already locked and color corrected show.  You'll have to recut with the proxy media and submit the recut sections to be re-graded.

  • Trim captured media from FCP in quicktime

i was wondering if there is any benefit to trimming media in quicktime that i captured in FCP. When i captured the media i left on handles big enough to build a bike from, and i was looking at cutting down the size of the media files. Is there a way to actually "cut" out the unwanted handles in final cut, or should i do it in Quicktime 7 pro?

Well, here's the issue. FCP is an editing application. You import material, you cut it down into smaller and/or re-arranged sequences and then export it as your final-- whether that is-- back to tape, to dvd, to computer playable file or any other possible medium.
It's simply a matter of not capturing more than you need, if you're concerned that you took in way too much footage. Finish up the project, archive what you have to and delete ALL of it from your drives. And drives are cheap these days, so what the heck, get a couple more. A terrabyte costs about 1000 dollars. That's cheap. Try buying a terrabyte 15 years ago! You would have had to sell your house and your kids.
