Trouble trying to factory reset from recovery (D:) drive

Hey,
I'm in a bit of a predicament.  The Vista cd key on the bottom of the laptop has, of course, worn away and is mostly unreadable at this point and it was never written down.  Also, there were never any recovery DVDs burned and I am no longer able to boot into windows so burning them now is not an option.
I've tried to use the recovery D: drive to do a factory reset/re-install of Vista.  It seems to work most of the way- it does the step where it is formatting the C: drive, and copying files.  It then reboots and it sort of looks like it is starting to re-install Vista but then at some point I get an error along the lines of "the NLS files are missing".  So it seems like the recovery drive isn't quite right.
My first thought was to see if HP still provided recovery DVDs for a small fee, but of course they seem to be discontinued (laptop is a Pavilion dv4-1435dx with Vista premium home 64-bit).
It seems like my 3 options going forward are:
1) pay upwards of $100 for a new copy of Vista (really makes me angry that I would be buying something I already bought...)
2) try to buy a recovery disk from a 3rd party retailer (I'm afraid to do this as some of them seem to suggest I would need my own cd key at some point, which again is not readable off the bottom of the laptop).
3) pray that there is some way to get the recovery D: drive to work as it should.
I'm hoping someone here can help me persue option 3).  I don't understand why the D: partition isn't working as it should- I mean, it's there to do exactly what I am trying to get it to do!  Is it common for the D: partition to just not work?  If so, it seems like that and the combination of easily worn cd keys on the bottom of laptops is a pretty shoddy product from HP...
If 3) is a no go, does anyone have experience with 3rd party recovery discs?  Do they require a cd key to be input even if they are being used on a laptop that has one of these pre-installed licenses and are just doing a factory reset?
Thanks for any and all help!

I've just been assured by a rep at their website that this will work for me:
http://www.computersurgeons.com/p-17082-recovery-kit-578918-001-for-hp-model-number-dv4-1435dx.aspx
They claim that the cd key will be automatically read from the MOBO so I will not have to manually type it in during installation.
I guess ~$30 is the price I will pay for not having recovery discs burnt when I still had access to windows.

  • Qosmio X500/00X System Recovery (Factory Reset) From Hard Disk Drive or Separate Disk

    Hey Guys,
Looking for your advice and any links if any...cheers in advance
    My Situation
    In December 2009 I purchased a Toshiba Qosmio X500 - Model No. PQX33A-00X00J
At the time I upgraded my purchase from Toshiba Reseller BD4U, going from the standard 1x 500GB Sata drive + 1x 64GB SSD... to instead having 2x 500GB sata drives. I purchased with 3 year onsite next business day warranty, that is is now expired.
It came loaded with MS Win 7 Premium Home Edition - but no disks provided.
    My Needs
I need/want to factory reset my PC - its starting to run slow
I need to re-partition from my existing 4x partitions to just having 2
    The Issues
Possibly as a result of upgrading the disk drives at time of purchase, I don't believe I have a hidden Recovery partition in order to do a System Recovery from the Hard Disk Drive - see image of my current partitions attached
I don't have Win 7 OS installation disks or Toshiba Driver disks as they should have been installed by Toshiba
    My Questions
Do You agree that I DONT have a Recovery Partition - when looking at the partition image? I'm confused on this point coz people say its hidden!?
Given I have no Toshiba Drivers Disk or Windows 7 OS disks - what should I do? I'm thinking of downloading Win 7 (use my product key from sticker under PC) and making a disk/USB (but need to learn how)
Is this where I get ALL necessary Toshiba drivers for my PC from?
Does Toshiba provide a link on its site and instructions on where to get Win 7 from so I can make a recover disk??
    Notes
Tried to email Toshiba support but at step 1 of their email process validation failed due to my PC being out of warranty so will call them on Monday instead
THANK YOU THANK YOU, for any help you can give big ro small
    Cheers
    Rick

WOW, thanks Macius for that great, full and thorough reply...cheers mate
I suspected I didn't have a recovery partition - so thanks for confirming it as I planned to risk it and try! I guess it doesn't really matter why, and it would be futile to go and blame the re-seller or Toshiba at this late stage in the game in hopes they would help...
Yeah, I just went to Microsoft Software Recovery hoping to download Win 7 OS and create a recovery disk but of course Microsoft would NOT allow it due to it being software that was pre-installed on the device blah blah blah (see error image)
And I didn't bother back then in 2009 to create recovery media as you wisely descibed, mostly due to laziness and mentally putting it in the 'too hard basket'...I didn't really understand it - or much about computers at the time.
Re - your Option #2 - thanks for confirming Toshiba drivers. I could/can do this - but don't really want to buy something I already have, perhaps I'll check out ebay or see if a friend has a disk
Re - your Option #1 - I'm currently based in Vietnam and wont be back in Oz till late in the year, so will see if I can find a reliable Toshiba service provider here - but wont hold me breath on this one
I'm thinking that IF Option #1 is a No-Go then - maybe Plan B or Option #3 could be:
Do an Audit of Programs to identify those I don't need and can safely remove - then remove using Control Panel/ Remove Programs tool
Reformat all other drives (not C:// where OS is)
    Then use some re-partition software e.g. Disk-Partiton.com
    Any final thoughts???
Anyhow - thanks very much again

  • HP Probook: Trying to do factory reset from recovery drive

    Hi
I have a HP Probook 4510s I would like to do a factory recovery on. CDplayer doesnt work.
When hitting F11 it  will boot into a boot manager status 0xc0000225 error.
Inside the Recovery partion there is a 7,3 GB HPFactory.wim file located at D:\system.sav\util\HPFactory.wim
I made the D: drive active in win computer management.
And got the boot manager status 0xc0000225 error every time booting
Next I installed a new win 7 from a USB.
How do I boot from the recovery drive?

    Hi
he causes may be the following things.
    1. The System files are corrupt.
    2. The disk File system has bad configuration.
    3. Hardware fault.
To boot into Windows Recovery environment, we need the recovery image or partition in your computer or the installation disk.
Try performing the Hard drive test from F2 and run the test.
Let us know how it goes!

Let's get your phone back up and running. Have you been able to try to press and hold the volume down and the power button at the same time for approximately 10 seconds? The phone should reboot for you. Is there any kind of physical or liquid damage to the device? Please keep me posted.

Everytime I open my laptop, Lightroom opens and tries to import photos from my external drive. Is there a default I need to change?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Error -36 is, as X423424X says, a generic I/O error. It doesn't say anything about what caused the error, or indeed where it occurred (source or target).
You have to describe exactly your action when the error occurs. Is the ext'l drive you mentioned formatted as NTFS (Win default file system)? Without additional software, Mac OS X cannot write to NTFS, it can only read from it.

  • Recieved error messages while performing recovery to factory state from the hard drive

HP Touchsmart tx2-1165ea, product no:NM515EA,microsoft vista SP1 operating system.
I keep recieving error messages during  recovery to factory state from hard drive and  perfoming a recovery from my recovery disc hangs on disc2. Therefore I am unable to update vista sp1 to vista sp2 the reson is: error SMI primitive installer failed (ox8007371c).
Reason for recovery ? performed a clean upgrade to windows 7(as rcommended) but I dont like that operating system
Request: kindly rectify my factory shipped recovery partion errors.

    Thank you for the clarification.
Typically, service packs have some requirements before they are listed in Windows update. It's really the build ID that determines what updates are listed through Windows Updates. Various Windows Updates will change the build ID and once that prerequisite is reached, service should be listed. I know that service pack 2 does not show in Windows Update until several updates and restarts later on my Vista SP1 system at home.
Have you tried running Windows Update multiple times making sure to install the important updates or did you go straight to trying to manually install the service pack?
    1. recovery disc is on the hard drive shipped in the computer from the factory.
I may be reading too much into this, but does this mean the recovery was performed by pressing F11 during boot or by using disks created using the hard drive's recovery partition prior to upgrading to it to Windows 7?
Also, how many times did you attempt the recovery from scratch? Many users have stated simply doing the recovery again took care of the issue and this seemed to be independent of manufacturer.
You can try the registry edit listed here, but registry edits are a little risky and do so at your own risk.  However, try the first solution in the registry edit post.

  • [SOLVED] can't boot from ssd after "reset" from recovery usb flash drive

I have a Twist s230u with the original Hitachi 500GB hdd, running Windows 8.1.  I want to replace the Hitachi 500GB hdd in my Twist s230u with a PNY 240GB SSD that i've purchased.
While running Windows from the Hitachi HDD drive I followed the "create a recovery drive" procedure to create a recovery usb.  Then I removed the Hitachi HDD from the s230u and installed the PNY 240 SSD in its place.  I booted the s230u from the recovery flash drive that I made.  I selected the "Reset Your PC" option and then the option to wipe all partition/files.  After the Reset completes, I try booting from the SSD but am unable to do so.  I just go back to the F12 boot menu.
I put the SSD in a drive dock attached to another computer.  Disk Management shows the partitions as follows -
I've looked at the partitions on the SSD after the Reset - Disk Management console shows a 1000 MB Recovery partition, a 260MB EFI System partition, and a 221GB primary partition with volume label Windows8_OS.  It is not marked as Boot, Page File, or Crash Dump.
Diskpart shows an an additional 128MB Reserved partition between the EFI partition and the primary partition.
I do notice that the 10.6 Lenovo Recovery partition is not present - but I did make sure that I included that partition on the recovery key - though the files on the recovery key only use 8.03 GB for some reason.  Made the key on two different flash media.
Diskpart also shows the following for the SSD:
    DISKPART> attributes disk
    Current Read-only State : No
    Read-only : No
    Boot Disk : No
    Pagefile Disk : No
    Hibernation File Disk : No
    Crashdump Disk : No
    Clustered Disk : No
(It also looks like this when I run DISKPART from the recovery media with the SSD inside the internal drive bay of the s230u.)
When I did the Reset on the SSD in the s230u, and when I tried to boot from it - I had the Secure Boot disabled, the "Legacy Boot first" option set, etc.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to be able to boot Windows 8.1 from this SSD in the s230u?  I've been working on this for a couple of days.
(I also tried cloning the HDD to the SDD using Minitool Partition Wizard, Macrium Reflect, Clonezilla, Acronis, etc - the SSD wouldn't boot after those clone operations either, and I thought maybe I'd have better luck with a reinstall from the USB recovery media.
(I also tried installing from a Windows 8 iso I burned to a DVD.  I got a product id mismatch message when I tried to install from that, and I was not allowed to proceed.)

well, I seem to have solved my own problem.  Maybe someone will learn from my mistakes.
I went into System Setup, went to the Startup tab, and changed the boot setting from "Both" to "UEFI Only".  After doing this I booted from my USB recovery drive, and Reset the PC.  After the Reset, I booted the s230u from the ssd, and I booted into a fresh Windows 8 installation.
It seems that the Reset operation could not work properly while the boot setting was "Both" (UEFI and Legacy) and "Legacy First."
I got a clue when I looked at the contents of the EFI System Partition and there was nothing there except a Temp folder. The EFI System Partition had not been properly written by the Reset operation.  I got some helpful hints on how to see the contents of the EFI System Partition here - http://www.fixedbyvonnie.com/2013/12/how-to-repair-the-efi-bootloader-in-windows-8/#.U-Qz2_ldW7q
I've also buggered up my original HDD now, so that it won't boot to Windows now.  Now to fix that!

  • Trying to factory reset my laptop

Hello, I am trying to reset my laptop to factory settings, I watched a video by HP on how to do so, and I followed it, went to the HP recovery manager and went to click 'system recovery' and saw this "system recovery restore your computer to its original factory condition (disabled: recovery partition is removed)" I'm not sure why it wont let me, I am running Windows 7 64-bit on an HP-2000 laptop, any help would be appreciated, also yes, I have my personal files saved to a flashdrive, thank you

    Hi,
It clearly says "(disabled: recovery partition is removed)" that means at one point you or someone else remove the Recovery partition. You have to contact HP to order a set of dics's.

  • Can't do a factory reset from preinstall directory

    Hi
I have a Satellite Pro L450D laptop I bought just over 12 months ago. It has an AMD Sempron processor - Window 7 Home Edition - 32bit system.
My problem is the laptop has become so slow that is has become impossible to use it. I do have Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 installed from when I bought it last year (definitions up to date).
I have looked in the task manager under the Performance tabe and the CPU usage is always 100% even when it is not being used; no apps or progs running in the background NOTHING!
I decided to do a fresh reinstall from the preinstall directory that came with the laptop but no matter how many times I shutdown and boot up and hit the F8 key for advance options, it gives everything except the one that allows you to select Repair the system. It is just not there at all to select. I have a pic of the DOS screen but this forum appears not to allow photos to be attached and uploaded.
Also when it is booting normally (default) HDD as oppose to CD drive - the DOS prompt show:
    Windows 7
    Windows 7
The first Windows 7 option, when selected will bring me into Windows be it quite slowly. The second Windows 7 option takes me to a another boot??? Not sure what it is but it reports an error say the device is inaccessible and shows something "00000000c" error number???
My question is how can I get this laptop to give me the "Repair" option when I select F8 at boot-up for advance settings. I am stuck. This happens even with the repair disc I created in the DVD drive and bios boot set to look for the DVD driive first on boot-up!
Any help or assistance will be appreciated.
PS: I also bought a Toshiba Satellite A660 64 bit i5 Processor Windows 7 Home Premium around 6 months ago and that runs beautifully except recently the Toshiba "HDD/SSD Alert" warns my HDD is about to fail; but that's a separate topic in terms of sending it in for replaciement drive under the warranty - I have already backed up all files and images from booth laptops.
    Kind regards
    SilverTosh

    Hey,
The exact HDD recovery procedure is described here:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=58
If you dont have the option for recover your notebook you have to use the Toshiba recovery disk but I cant imagine you dont have this option on recovery disk too
If you boot from recovery disk what happens exactly and what options you get? Normally after booting from recovery disk you get a screen where you have to select the recovery option and you must confirm that everything will deleted to restore the out of box settings.

  • Lost iPod in fire and trying to restore files from external hard drive

I've got a similar issue to folks who are trying to restore their Library from an external source, but with a new twist. We suffered a house fire, and my iPod was destroyed. Amazingly an external hard drive I had done some backups to survived (mostly) and I have several of my iTunes songs, but when I tried to import them into my new computer (and new license of iTunes) I can't get anything to work. I tried manually copying the files over to the iTunes folder and then "importing a file" into my Library but it doesn't do anything. any ideas?

Thank you for the suggestion.  I was moving them in Finder, (just as the Genius showed me but obviously he wasn't quite a genius after all!)   However, even after moving a file onto the external drive within iMovie like you suggested,  it's still not working.  Trying to open the files from the external drive, they will only open in QuickTime Player, and also only as individual clips.  Any other suggestions would be very much welcomed!
    Thank you.
