Trouble with Firewire Hub

I've been using a Belkin 6-port Firewire hub for 6 months with no troubles, but in the last week, I suddenly stopped seeing icons on my desktop when I connect. I assumed the hub had gone bad, so I just bought an IOGear 6-port hub to replace. Still am not getting a connection. I then thought the Firewire 400 port on the MacBook Pro went bad, but when I connect a hard drive directly to that port (without routing it through the hub) it comes right up on my desktop. I am using the hub with the AC adapter to power it.
I'm generally running three hard drives and a deck through the hub. No problems until last week, but suddenly two separate hubs, one right out of the box, don't work. I tried both Disk Utility and the "About this Mac/More Info" routes - neither recognizes the devices attached to the hub.
Any advice would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks for your concern..and yes it was confusing indeed! The hub is in no way connected to our ether-internet configuration here at home. But what has become clear it that I do not have to have both units together at once, the Duet/interface is just for recording and the Liquid Mix for post production.
My Duet simply can not share the firewire port..! Finito

Does such a beast exist? I find it very disheartening that so many companies are developing USB accessories for the iPod when firewire was what it was originally built with. It is a much faster and far superior connection than USB.

    Welcome!
Click on "store" at the top of the page and do a search for "firewire hub". Apple sells about 5 or 6 different versions. Your local computer/electronics store will also sell them.

  • G3 Wallstreet, 10.2.8. Trouble with FireWire HDD.

    Hi!
    I have G3 Wallstreet (233Mhz, 384 MB RAM, 4Gb HDD) witn Jaguar 10.2.8 and PCMCIA-> FireWire adapter.
I try connect my external HDD (external box for 2 HDD with USB, FW400, FW800 + SATA HDD ~600 Gb) to this Mac.
In "About ths mac" I see FireWire adapter, External box and HDD in box.
In "Disk Utils" I see Disk without partition. If I try create partition, "Disk Utils" show progress bar, but nothing happens.
I connect this HDD to Mac mini, create 6 partition (100 Gb/partition) with MacOS Extended FileSystem. And copy some files to first partition - nothing troubles, all work correctly.
After this I connect HDD to WallStreet. In Finder and on the Desktop I see six partititon, but if I can browse this partition - they "unmount" (I can't see this at Finder).
In "Disk Utils" I can see this partition, but if I try Verify partition I see message about B-tree error.
If I create (using Mac mini) partititon bigger than 128Gb (or 256Gb? Sorry, don't remember) Wallstreet's Disk Utils not show they, only HDD.
If I use small (~100Gb) partition in Terminal no error about disk and filesystem. If I use bigger partition I see in Terminal messages about size of partititon.
I want install MacOS 9.2.2 on Wallstreet at evening and test this External HDD.
Have any ideas about my problem?
    Thanks!
    PS Excuse my poor English

    jpl,
I tried new combinations and received new facts:)
    I used my PB G4 (MacOS 10.4.11).
    Step by step:
I connected FW HD to G4.
I created 3 partitions (198Gb/partitions) with MacOS Extended filesystem (journaled), Apple partition map.
I copied some files to 1st partition. One of this files was *.dmg.
I connected FW HD to G3.
G3 showed all 3 partitions in Finder and on Desktop. I used files from 1st partition - I copied all files to internal HD and successfully mounted *.dmg. But I could copy files to this partition. I could unmount this partitions. OS said "... disk in use".
    Disk Utils (G3) showed 3 partitions: ~201Gb, ~201Gb, ~61Gb. It's strange, isn't it?
I connected FW HD to G4 and created 4 partitions (149Gb/partitions) with MacOS Extended filesystem (not journaled), Apple partition map.
I connected FW HD to G3, saw partitions in Finder, but they disappeared in itself. Disk Utils closed in itself with error.
I couldn't unmount partition - "disk in use".
I connected FW HD to G4 an verified partition by Disk Util - "Invalid B-tree node size"
    I rebooted G3.
I connected FW HD to G4 and created 1 partitions (149Gb/partitions) with MacOS Extended filesystem (not journaled), Apple partition map.
I connected FW HD to G3, saw partitions in Finder, but couldn't use this partition - "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code -50)".
I'll use terminal and textedit tomorrow. I'll try all variants and copy/past system logs.
PS: jpl, can you use "Kirill" instead "kirill"? It's my realname:) Tnx!

  • Trouble with Firewire 400 ports

My firewire ports seem to be working intermittently. Sometimes my external drive will hang when I am trying to back up data to it, and nothing works except to unplug the drive (ouch!). I have tried Force Quit and even tried to shut down the computer. When the drive is hung, I can't get the computer to shut down. The drive light is on, like data is being written, but nothing is going on.
I suspected the drive and tried to use Disk Warrior, but Disk Warrior crashed before it finished rebuilding the directory.
The drive works fine on my other computer, a PowerBook G4, 17 inch running OS X 10.4.
I repaired Disk Permissions, but that doesn't help.
I have several other FireWire drives and they have the same sort of problems when connected to my iMac.
Is there some program I can run to check the FireWire ports?

    Try this:
    First:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Disconnect all FireWire devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).
    3. Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.
    4. Plug the computer back in and turn it on.
    5. Reconnect the FireWire device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each FireWire port if you have more than one.
    Zapping the PRAM:
After the startup tone, hold down <commandd><option><r> until 3 additional startup tones are heard, then release the 4 keys.
Or you can try resetting the NVRAM
After the startup tone, hold down <command><option><o><f> until the text screen is visible. When text can be entered, type the following commands, followed by the <return> key (there are no space characters in each command):
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
reset-all (the Mac will boot up after this command is entered)
Letr me know how you make out,
    Miriam

  • Trouble with Firewire Ports

My MacBook Pro crashed and ever since the firewire ports (both) will not recognize any drives, audio interfaces or camcorders. When I check the System Profiler under FireWire Bus it says "Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices."
Has anyone had this trouble? (USB is working fine.)
Thanks in advance for any help.

Try resetting the PMU, this worked for me.

  • Trouble with firewire 800 on Macbook Pro

Ok guys, I've given this thing all I've got and more and i still cannot figure it out. I'm trying to connect a firewire interface for my drum mics to record on my macbook. I first bought a refurbrished interface and it would not sync up to my mac. I figured it was still broken and so i sent it back to the manufacturer. I now have a new interface and I'm dealing with the same problem, I've tried two other cables so i doubt that is the problem, and when I hook up the interface through MIDI it recognizes it so that i know the interface works, but i can't use it until i figure out this whole firewire issue. I've heard that SL has problems with the firewire, but i havent upgraded yet and I'm still running on good old OSX Leopard. As far as I can tell, this seems to be an issure with the actual firewire drive itself and I'm taking it to an apple specialist this afternoon. I'm just trying to get some last minute info on this problem before i accidently replace something that already works.
Any help on this issue is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Information on the manufacturer's website is sparse. Although it lists 10.4 or above it doesn't actually list 10.5.x or higher and the computers listed are all older models and not intel based. That's the part that makes me wonder.
Everything plugged into the same strip is a good thing for troubleshooting–it means that most likely everything is on the same ground plane and eliminates that possibility from the equation.
If you haven't done so already try resetting the firewire bus per the five steps listed in this document: What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device
If all else fails you could take the interface and MBP in to see an Apple Genius. They may be able to sort it out for you, especially if the problem does end up being on the Mac side.
The fact that the manufacturer hasn't been back in touch is a tad worrisome.

  • Ongoing troubles with firewire Lacie hard drive

A couple of years ago I purchased a Lacie firewire 160GB hard drive to use as a backup for my aging G3. After encountering problems formatting and mounting the drive I put it aside to concentrate on my work. Recently I powered up and connected to my G3, and the drive mounnted on my desktop. I proceeded to copy files over [my internal 9 GB drive was nearly full]. Just as I finished the Firewire drive crashed and I may have lost several years of work unless I can retireve the data and maybe replace the drive. Maybe the drive would function correctly if used with a G4 or G5 but for the moment I use what I have.
Does anyone have any idea what may be the problem and how I might repair the drive?

I agree with what Bill W says
if the drive is acting flakey, its hard to say whether it is the drive or the bridgeboard in the enclosure
first thing to do is to update the firmware on the bridgeboard in the enclosure - you can find firmware tools here: FireWire firmware/tools
if that doesnt work, then you should take the drive and place it in a new enclosure such as the following: FireWire Enclosures
the problem is, in either case, if the problem is the drive itself, then before doing anything is to run a data recovery app on the drive to get any data you need to recover/save - the most popular is Prosoft Engineerings Data Rescue

  • Are FireWire Hubs ok w/ FCP ?

Any known problems with firewire hubs and FCP HD ?
    i'll be using:
    mac mini dual intel
external firewire 400 lacie hard drives
    external DVD burner (firewire 400)
    canopus ADV100
    thank you

    thanks Robbosaur
problem is that one of the lacie drives has only one FW 400 port (other port is FW800) and the canopus box has only one 6pin FW400 port.
I can not use the 4pin FW400 port on the canopus while using the 6pin FW400 port.
i'd also like to hook up the video camera.
i'm hoping the FW hub will solve all of this. but sometime these hubs introduce more problems that they solve.
    Should be fine.
Daisy chain, well you'll have to
    Mac>Drives>Canopus on the end.
Once you're done editing and looking to generate the
m2v and audio I'd probably opt to have those saved on
    the boot drive.
Unplug the drives then hook the burner up at that
    stage.

  • Firewire hub?

    hey everyone!
i have an imac and have run out of firewire ports for all my external hds.
does anyone have any experience with firewire hubs? for some reason i am weary of hooking one up but am sick of plugging and unplugging this mess of wires and cords.
any advice on if these hubs are ''safe'' or not??
    thnks

does it matter if the brands etc are different?
    No.
aren't the two ports on the firewire hds-one is 400 one is 800??
Not always. Some have two FW400 ports, some have one of each and some also have a USB port. If one or more of the drives has only one FW 400 and one FW800 port, use a cable made for connecting the two.
does it matter which port you connect to?
    No.
does each drive mount on the desktop?
Yes ... as long as it's functioning properly.
connect drive a to mac firewire 800 port/connect hd B to drive A firewire port/ and so on??
    Yes, that will work.

  • Firewire daisy-chain trouble with Leopard. Will a hub help?

I cannot get reliable daisy-chaining of my external Firewire drives under Leopard. A Firewire drive directly attached to computer will work, but subsequent daisy-chains to this drive will not mount more than half the time. I ended up getting corruption of 2 drives: there appears to sometimes be Spotlight crashes/Finder crashes, and Disk Utility repair failure after a mount fails.
I have nine FW drives, and I like to keep bootable clones of all 3 of my Macs with the current system and a couple of generations back. Being able to attach only one drive to my 12" G4 Powerbook 1.5GHz makes cloning difficult (I can only clone the internal drive using my Powerbook). If I get a Firewire hub, will my FW connection then be reliable? There seems to be a problem in Leopard as I don't get daisy-chain problems using the same drives under Tiger. The drive activity lights don't even flash when the daisy-chained drive mounts fail under Leopard, so it appears that Leopard is making no attempt to mount the drives. Why would this be? Yet sometimes daisy-chain drives have mounted just fine.
Makes/models I have tried: Smartdisk Firelite (were sold by Apple), Maxtor OneTouch III, Seagate FreeAgent Pro, and Iomega Black series. I tried various cables.
Does anyone know what the difference is, from a hardware standpoint, between daisy-chain vs. using a Firewire hub. Would there be an inherent difference using a hub?
Are the "hubs" with Mac Mini footprints actually true hubs or are they daisy-chains? How about FW drives with built-in FW "hubs": are THEY actually a true hub or a daisy-chain in disguise? (Sorry if these questions seem stupid.) Recommendations for a hub?

Sorry just noticed I've probably posted this under the wrong forum header

  • ISight with External Drive or Firewire Hub

    Hello,
I am interested in purchasing an iSight for multiple reasons. I have been reading in the forum that iSight may not work with certain firewire devices which is unfortunate since I utilize external firewire devices on a daily basis and it would not be beneficial to disconnect them to utilize iSight.
I have a external firewire DVD burner which is connected to my miniStack, which in turn is connected to my Powerbook. I also boot off of the miniStack and do not want to change that fact.
I can't seem to find a straight answer to this question, "Will my iSight work with the firewire hub in my miniStack?" If not, will it work with a powered firewire hub? If so, what hub is recommended, or at least is know to work very well?
If iSight will not work at all in my situation, can anyone recommend a camera that works well with iChat, iMovie, and Skype.
Hopefully I am not beating a dead horse with this subject!
    Thanks
Powerbook G4 1.33   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   5G iPod, Airport Express, Airport Snow

    Hello Akuma,
I strongly recommend Belkin Hubs. My experience and that of others that have posted indicate that they work well w/Mac's 25V power.
That said, there is no reason for you to replace the miniStack, which seems to play well with the iSight: however I'm baseing that on reports/conversations w/others; not personal experience.
The iSight is designed to work w/Mac and the chances are that you have a better than 50/50 shot at it working w/your particular "flavor" of other non-Apple FW devices. The only way you will be able to tell for sure is to try it. The final outcome, good or bad, really can't be qualified as it seems to be dependent on what non-Mac FW devices use for their logic chip (Oxford having proven to work in most cases).
James A. Weston's suggestion is correct and a lot simpler than mine. Let us know if you do try, and the results so others may benefit. Good Luck.
    Respectfully,
    Bill Gallagher
ps-I'm in WI a lot, and would be glad to let you try my iSight if you can't find a friend or neighbor w/one.

  • Would a Firewire hub work well with Macbook?

I'm thinking of buying a Macbook for music production. I have an audio interface which is FW400 and I would also need an external hard drive. If I used a Firewire hub, would it slow down my hard drive or create problems with my audio interface? How could I get both working at the same time?

what music program are you using? i use protools and the only thing i need that is firewire is my external HD. my MPC is hooked up through USB and MIDI and my keyboard/controller is USB also. what else would you need that is firewire?
sorry now i see your interface is FW400. usually a firewire interface will have extra fire wire ports in it. like my firewire HD has another firewire port on it. but i guess if that doesnt work then a hub would be fine.

  • Problems with the Firewire Hub at a Cinema Display

The Firewire Hub on my "23 inch Apple Cinema HD Display" doesn't work when connected to my "Power Mac G5 DualCore 2,3 Ghz Double Lay" - the hub works when connected to a Mac mini (or before to a G4 867). The Firewire-Port at the G5 works, too. Who can help me?

There seems to be not as much power at the monitor ports, use the main ports instead.
Dont forget to clone that boot drive occassionally

[ 481.799166] hub 3-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 3
Searching on the web, most results I found lead to this page, where it is said that the problem is due to badly tuned overcurrent protection, and advocated that unplugging and switching off the computer for a little while gets things back into normal. This does not really work for me; the problem seems to occur more randomly, unfortunately with high probability (my camera is available after less than one boot out of ten).
I tried to ensure that the ehci-hcd module is loaded at boot with the ignore-oc option (with a file in /etc/module-load.d/), to no avail.
I also wrote a script which alternatively removes and reloads the ehci-pci driver until my device is found in lsusb. It is sometimes helpful, but usually not. And even when my device is found that way, it can only be used for a while before disappearing again.
Anyway, such a hack is unacceptable... So, my questions are:
is it indeed related to overcurrent protection ?
is there anything else I can try ?
should I file somewhere an other of the numerous bug reports about "unable to enumerate USB device" already existing ?
If of any importance, I am running linux 3.15.7, because at the time I installed my system, I couldn't get the hybrid graphic card Intel/AMD working under 3.16.
