Trouble with loading videos - Manually manage music and videos not supported now with iOS5 and a 1st gen iPad?

Since updating my iPad 1st gen to iOS5.0.1 videos don't get loaded properly into the Videos app.
On the Summary page in iTunes of my docked iPad, I have always checked the box for "Manually manage music and videos".
I have my reasons for doing it this way, but that's for another thread perhaps.
The problem is that when I load a video to my iPad this way - by simply just dragging it from the desktop and onto the iPad, under Devices in iTunes - it copies/updates, and shows up on the iPad like it always has before iOS5. But now, with iOS5, when I undock, it can't be found anywhere within the Videos app on the iPad. The only way I can find it is to do a Search, which seems to find it, but when I click it, a different video plays - the first video in the Movies list in the Video app. Dock the iPad again, yes the video is there, according to iTunes, but no way to play it once iPad is undocked.
My suspicion is that with iOS5 you are no longer able to use the "Manually manage music and videos (Mmm&v)" that you will be forced to run everything through iTunes - and probably iCloud. I've unchecked the Mmm&v box, and get prompted with "Are you sure? - All existing content on the iPad will be replaced with content from your iTunes library". READ - "Rebuild your entire video and music collection, and this time run it all through iTunes. Welcome to iOS5. Have a nice day or two wasting your time rebuilding your entire video and music collection. Don't fight it. Use iTunes for everything! Until we finally make iTunes a decent piece of digital media management software, then you'll have to do it all again."
Okay, rant over - Anyone out there with running iOS5 on a 1st gen iPad with the Mmm&v option checked and able to load a video manually (not through iTunes)? Any other thoughts?
Thanks

Yea, i managed to fix my issue in a wild fashion way But I DONT suggest it to anyone.
I like to hear why it happened after upgrading iTunes and if there is any peaceful solution.
Bythe way, here is how i fixed it :
1-i checked "manually manage music and videos" checkbox and clicked on "Sync" button
2-It showed a threating message that it will erase my music and videos ,......
3-I clicked on OK button and let iTunes do any thing she said , but the second it started to delete my treasures from my iphone, i disconnected my phone by pulling USB cable.
Now i have my musics and videos untouched and got that Option enabled again and i can manage my Music/Videos and Books manually.

    Hi Gregg,
Have you tried resetting the device (nothing will be lost): Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the Home screen redisplays, see if your Music app is behaving normally.

  • What's the dif  "sync only checked songs and videos"&"manually manage music

Can someone please explain the difference between "sync only checked songs and videos" and "manually manage music and videos"
It probably makes sense to someone that uses many iTunes features but I just download podcasts and music.

Okay , I had "*Manually Managed*" checked in the summery and had restored the iPod to get rid of some videos that wouldn't go away. When I went to Music and checked *Sync Music* Selected Playlists, etc. it appears that the *Manually Manage* box in the Summery un-checked itself.
    Interesting,
So just to clarify ; When *Manually Managed* is checked you can only drag things into the device from your library (outside the device), using the Music tab within the device will negate this ?

  • Manually manager music setting does not work

My ipod 2nd gen 4 gb will not allow me to manually sync. It is set to manually manage music = checked, and yet every time I connect it, it automatically syncs.
    Any ideas?

Try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually choose no and it will default to manual mode: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • Has there been a change to manually manage music and videos?

Does anyone know if there has been a change to iTunes with regard to how to manually manage media files?
I am almost positive that in order to manually manage music, books, videos, etc. you selected the Summary tab for your iDevice when you plugged it into iTunes and then you selected sync on the specific tabs for the media you wanted to have control over.
But recently when I did this for my iPhone 4S the check boxes for music, videos and books all became un-checked.  So I would re-check music and have to reinstall all of my songs and playlists because this would cause iTunes to want to delete all the songs on my phone.  I would then check the box on the books tab and go through the same process of reinstalling all my books.  When I went back to the music tab the check box was unchecked again!
When I unchecked the check box on the summary tab to Manually Manage Music and Videos the tabs for music, videos, books, would all be grayed out and unusable.
I played with this for a number fo hours trying to figure out how to get this all to work the way it used to and discovered that by checking the box for Manage Music and Videos on the summary tab and leaving the other tabs un-checked I was able to manage my media files myself (Which was my goal to begin with).
Am I remembering this wrong?  Or has the interface changed in iTunes for how to manually manage my media files?

No, iTunes has not changed the way it works.

This is correct (and the way it has always worked).
Because you are not Manually managing the items on the iDevice, you cannot select them on the iDevice.
Check the box to manually manage then drag from iTunes to the device.
Or you can uncheck manually manage, create a few playlists (then simply add/delete from these playlists to change iDevice content) and still drag items to the device. They will show up under the respective tab under Manually added items.

  • ITunes - manually manage music no longer works

So I'm quite startled to find only a few topics about this without any resolution. Up until today after I upgraded to iTunes 11, I was always able to set my main itunes to manually manage music with my iphone and then go to ANY computer and add music to my iphone. NOW it wants to wipe my whole iphone library every time I try to apply the "manually manage music" option which would allow me to add music from any computer. I ask the community here - WHEN did this happen? Are we no longer allowed to do add music manually from any computer? WHATS the point of manually manage music (the whole point was that you didn't need to sync always with one comp)? I've tried wiping my iphone at two locations I often add music at with checking the manually manage music and everytime I wipe at one place then go to the other it wants to wipe again when I check the box to add music. I would really like to know if this is how it works now - meaning YOU NOW CAN ONLY ADD MUSIC TO YOUR IPHONE THROUGH ONE ITUNES LIBRARY. If so, I will be immediately uninstalling iTunes and finding alternatives. I appreciate any info or help. Thanks.

iPhone has traditionally only allowed manual management from a single library. Also once set up to sync, iDevices can only be switched to manual mode from the "home" library without iTunes wanting to erase the content. On any other library it will want to erase. Has your main library been rebuilt following a crash? This could lead to the symptoms you describe.
    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans with iTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
As long as your media is organised within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organised) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.
When working with an iPhone earlier builds of iTunes would remove any file not physically present in the local library, even if there was an entry for it, making manual management practically redundant on the iPhone. This behaviour has been changed but it will still only permit manual management with a library that has the correct internal ID. If you don't want to sync your library between machines on a regular basis just copy the iTunes Library.itl file from the current "home" machine to any other you want to use, then clean out the library entires and import the local content you have on that box.
Perhaps the reason you were able to add music from more than one computer in the past is that you had done something similar by accident rather than design...

  • Big Trouble! Manually manage music and videos problem

Alright, so I've just checked the Manually manage music and videos box. But now when I uncheck it, it says that all my existing content on the iphone will be replaced with the content on my iTunes library. The thing is, I just clean out my entire itunes library so if i uncheck it, all my music will be gone. Help please.

    Why?! Where is your backup?
New empty library or did you clean out the existing one? If the latter then steps 1 & 4 aren't really necessary.
    You should be able to:
    Backup the device.
Transfer your purchases into your authorized library.
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup. This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

  • HT1535 my iphone is set to "manually manage music and videos" and it still does not allow me to add music from my other computers.

I have followed the steps in order to manually manage the music on my 3GS iphone. (used the latest version of itunes and my iphone is up to date with iOS5) and it still is not allowing me to add music from another computer.
when i plug it into the second computer, it is asking me to click "manually manage music and videos" again. when i do that, it says it is going to sync with this new library and erase all music that is already there. i dont want this to happen! i only want to add a few select songs from each library. I have waaayy to much to add and erase every time.

  • Cannot delete music from iPod nano (latest generation).  Have already selected "Manually Manage music and videos" but delete is unavailable from right click or Edit.

I have done everything I've seen recommended for deleting music (jncluding "manually manage").  Thanks for the assistance!!!

Did you Apply the change after selecting (checking the box for) Manually manage music and videos?
With the latest iTunes, if the sidebar is hidden, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
In the sidebar, select the iPod under DEVICES.  Click the toggle (to the left of iPod) to drop down the iPod's content list, indented under iPod.  Click on Music there.  Over to the right, the list of songs on the iPod is shown.  You can select songs there, right click on them, and select Delete from the contextual menu.  You can also select songs there, go up to the menu bar, and select Delete under Edit.  You can also select songs there, and just press the Delete key on the keyboard.
If you want to use automatic syncing, which is far more convenient than the manual method, and easily manage content on the iPod (add and remove songs), please post back.

Settings>Store (or iTunes & App Stores if you are running iOS6)>Apple ID. Tap your son's ID and sign out. Sign in with your ID and password.
You shouldn't lose the music, but if you try to update any apps that you bought with the family ID, you will have to use that password that is linked with that ID in order to update.
Avoid downloading past purchased content with the old ID if you can since you will associate the iPad with the old ID for 90 days and you will lock yourself out of your own, new ID for that period of time. Read more about associated devices in iTunes here.

  • Ios7 incorrectly syncs music when "Manually manage music and videos" checked

    iPhone 5 with ios7.0.2
    Mac 10.6.8 with iTunes 11.1.1
Since installing ios7 iTunes syncs music even though I always have the "Manually manage music and videos" checkbox checked.  Since I don't want to keep the same music on my Mac that I have on my phone, this results in the music on the phone being deleted when I manually drag new music onto it in iTunes.  This happened with the previous version of iTunes, before updating to 11.1.1, and still happens with 11.1.1.
    Other iPhone settings:
    Music: everything off / disabled
iTunes & App Store: everything off / disabled
    iTunes settings:
Summary tab: only "Manually manage music and videos" checked
Music tab: nothing checked or selected
    Any ideas?

Then you are the only person I know that can do that on a non-jailbroken iPhone. It is restricted by design to one library.

  • Unable to manually manage music and videos on iPhone 4 without erase and sync, same computer!

Ok, so I know you all have heard this before but I do believe my case is rather unique, and quite frustrating.
I purchased an iPhone 4 and synced it to the same computer I am using now - created the playlist and used it to sync with phone. Worked great for awhile; but one day I contracted some nasty malware and had to wipe my computer and reinstall my OS (Windows 7). Albeit my music library was on my external HDD which survived the onslaught. I obviously had to reinstall iTunes afterwards. The playlist was gone on reinstall.
Afterwards I still didn't see an issue with my iPhone and iTunes: When I plug it in it syncs, everything seems to be working accordingly.
But I recently transferred some new music from a CD to my iTunes and wanted to throw those songs on my iPhone, the drag and drop method I was so very used to did not work and I noticed that "manually manage music and videos" was uncheck under my devices summary.
When I attempt to check this option in iTunes it gives me a popup notification telling me I need to erase and sync in order to use this option because my 'iPhone is synced with another library". Again, I DID have to reinstall iTunes after reinstalling my OS.
I have tried all the tricks that google could supply me with with no avail; authorizing, stopping the sync from automatically starting.... yada yada - none of these cookie cutter methods have worked for me.
    Here's a too long didn't read:
    >iPhone 4 was working fine - used playlist to sync with.
    >Had to reinstall OS (Windows 7) Playlist gone.
    >Reinstall iTunes.
    >iPhone still syncs with library, no error messages on connect.
    >Unable to manually manage music and videos without erase and sync.
    >None of the usual methods work.

Hmm, I will say after posting this and looking at the related threads it seems I can only either use manually manage or sync.
I was using sync before but since the playlist disappeared I was syncing with I simply want to add music to my phone without deleting everything. Is this possible?
If I use "manually manage music and videos" will it delete everything or just the music and videos? It doesn't specify...
Could I just create a new playlist and sync it with that? If so how?
The bottom line is it isn't that big of a deal if I need to simply rebuild my iPhone music library but losing my configuration, contacts etc is not an option. Optimally I would just like to be able to add my new music to my iPhone without having to rebuild my library.

  • Cannot manually manage music and videos without erasing and syncing first

I have an iPhone 3G bought new from the Apple store using 2.1. Using iTunes 8.0 and checking the "Manually manage music and video" checkbox, iTunes prompts me to "Erase and Sync", no other option is available to me. It was the same when using version 7.7 as well.
I'm not syncing to another computer, it's the same MacBook I've had for almost a year. How do I get the Library Persistent ID in iTunes to match the iPhone. I have the ID from the iTunes Music Library.xml file. I just need to know where the matching file for the iPhone is so I can make them match.
The ID doesn't match because I had to rebuild my drive a month ago and my question to Apple (actually Steve) is why can't I sync the other way from the phone to the computer.
Why does my library on the phone have to be wiped out. Who had the warped thought to come up with this genius idea.

I cannot express how disappointing this was for me to find out.
I want my music to be mobile, I don't want to have to copy it to every computer I want to listen to it on. I want to listen to it from the device, and be able to buy a new album at work or at home. This is a major disappointment for me, as every other device I have owned including my iPod Touch had this capability. I could authorize 5 machines and manually sync, and the music on that device could be played and managed on those authorized machines. For example, my wife has her own music collection, and I have mine, but we have a media center connected to our flat-screen in the living room, that we use for playing music when we are entertaining guests, and with our old iPods and iPod Touch devices, we could unplug one of our devices and plug the other persons in and listen to music from both our libraries without copying the music to that computer, as long as we authorized that machine for the both of us. Now with our iPhones there is no way to keep our seperate librarys and be able to play music on multiple computers in our house and at work, which we have always been able to do until our iPhones. The whole point of the iPhone for me was to be able to combine two devices and now because of the lack of this feature I still have to keep all our iPods around too... Dumb. I almost took our phones back because of this, and if apple doesn't fix it, I probably won't buy another. They should have at least mentioned this little fact before selling the devices to us. I know it's a different device, but it's similar enough that you expect it to work the same as the iPod and iPod Touch. It's not like I am wanting to be able to copy music from the device to multiple machines, it's exactly the opposite... I just want to be able to copy music to the device and listen to it at home and at work... why all apples other devices do this, and the iPhone doesn't is completely perplexing to me, and a serious oversight on there part. This pill would not be so hard to swallow if I had been warned about this prior to dropping almost a grand for iPhones for myself and my wife, expecting what I saw as a more advanced device to work at least as good as the other similar devices I own did.
