Trouble with PDF Export from ID CS6

I am having the following problem with PDF exported from an ID CS6 document. I have a couple of pages where a b&w photograph is partly covered by a non-wrapping text frame and in that text frame there is blue text. In ID it looks like this:
It also looks like this in the exported PDF in Apple Preview.app and for most of these pages they also look good in Acrobat Pro. But two are giving me trouble. They look like this:
and sadly, they also look that way when Ingram tries to use them. I export using the typical print format PDF/X-1a:2001
I have a minimal ID document that shows the problem with 3 such pages, one with the problem.

Select one of the troublesome objects and open the attributes panel as well as the effects panel.

  • Terrible Graphic Quality with PDF Export from FM9

I'm using FM9 unpatched on Windows XP Pro.
I cannot get the PDF export to work properly with graphics. Everything else looks great in general, but the graphics lose quality, both upon import into FM and even more so upon PDF export.
I have tried every option for importing, both working with native files (ex. .ai) and with JPEG or other format exports, as well as importing the files themselves directly and importing by reference.
I have also tried tweaking the PDF "Image" settings, removing any and all compression to see if it would help, which it did not.
In the end, the best results actually come from imported JPEG files, which are a bit blurry, but (relatively) usable, considering the alternatives. The Illustrator files I want to use are just awful, they are completely bitmapped upon export to PDF.
It is also worth noting that I do not encounter this problem when using the FM drawing tools. The output of those graphic files on printer and in PDF is excellent, vector-quality art.
I find it unusual that I am having this problem and see no other mention of it in the forums. It is causing serious pain and delays on my project, so if someone has any insight, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Douglas

First and foremost, you mention using FM unpatched, but you don't mention any specific reason you haven't applied the patches, can you elaborate on that? What version are you running, then?  The latest version is 9.03 aka p250, as shown in Help > About.
There were several fixes to PDF generation in both the .02 and .03 update, so that would be the #1 recommendation.
Second thing is to tell us
    1)  how you're creating the PDFs, are you using Save As or are you printing to a print file,
    2) what printer do you have set as your default printer (in FM) when you create the PDF

  • Big problem with PDF export from CS4

Create a document with facing pages. Then place a rectangle or any other object on the master through the whole spread. Place the text or any other object on the master over the first rectangle on the both pages. Now, when exporting pdf, the text on the left pages is disappeared becaouse it covered by the copy of the rectangle. The variation of the problem is when using any tansparencies, then they become "less transparent" on the left pages because of this strange dublicating.
There is an archive in attachment that contains indd and pdf files with this problem.

Thanks, it works, but bug is still bug. In some cases it's impossible to do this, for example my recent case: it was text with huge outer glow on master pages. Outer glow from right page dublicates to the left and covered left text, and there's no way to move effect to another layer separately. The solution was to detach these texts from masters, but it's also unhandy solution.
It's hard to detect such cases unless it happen with big elements.

  • Trouble with batch export from cd

a buddy of mine put some music on my i-pod, i downloaded it into i-tunes. When i batch export music into my project it works fine. I have been trying to do this straight from a music cd. It is not wanting to recognize the songs. Am i missing something can we take songs from a cd and use them in our final cut project. i pressed command-b in browser, create new bin, select bin>batch export, drag song from cd into export window, set destination, Aiff as file type change rate to 48.0 click export. I can get it to play from the cd in the project, but i want to eject the cd and access the song of the exported or imported file.

Just copy it to your hard drive first (preferably inside your scratch disk).
Files on a CD are 44kHz and FCP works best with 48kHz files so it is best to select the file in the browser, go to Export > QuickTime Conversion. Select AIFF from the drop-down menu (if it is not already selected) and click Options. Make sure Rate is set to 48000 and Sample Size is set to 16, then click Ok and export the file. Import this new file into your project. Because it has the correct settings that FCP is looking for, you should not need to render it.

  • Fonts Not Embedding Consistently with PDF Export - Inconsistent Fix and Unknown Cause

I have had ongoing problems with PDF export from FrameMaker. Sometimes the correct fonts do not embed in the PDF and Times New Roman is substituted. The problem appears and disappears and is causing me a lot of lost time and frustration.
I am running FrameMaker 9.0 fully patched on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I have seen people complain about this issue and am familiar with the suggested fixes. However, the exact cause and solution eludes me because the problem continues to recur and I am only able to recover with guesswork and workarounds.
    Initially I did the following:
    ACROBAT PDF SETTINGS
    - In the printer properties for Adobe PDF settings I turned off the option "Rely on system fonts only; do not use documents fonts."
    ACROBAT DISTILLER SETTING
Under "Font" Settings I changed the following:
    - Under "Settings/Font Locations" I added the font folder for Technical Communication Suite 2.0 and made sure all the fonts existed there and in the Windows default font directory.
    - Under "Settings/Edit Adobe PDF Setting/Fonts" I changed the following options:
                - Selected "Embed all fonts"
                - Under "Embedding" chose "Always Embed" for the target fonts.
I tweaked these settings for hours and got no results. Then I rebooted and the problem had magically disappeared. I fixed the issue in the same way on another machine and the results were permanent and I was just happy to finally have it fixed, But this time it didn't last.
I should note that upon reboot, when I used the stock "PDF Job Options," the correct fonts still embedded, leading me to believe that the fix had nothing to do with the changes I made to Distiller settings.
After reboot I generated PDFs with the correct fonts embedded. Then I shut down FM, but left the system running. The next morning I opened FM again and the same problem occurred.
So I rebooted again -- and the problem disappeared again. I therefore thought maybe the issue fixes on reboot but recurs when you shut down FM and reopen. So I shut down FM again and reopened, but it is still working fine for the moment.
I verified that the Adobe PDF settings under "Printers & Devices" that I turned off (Rely on system fonts only; do not use documents fonts) remained correctly unchecked through all these changes.
I would really like to know why this happens so I can resolve it permanently and avoid more lost time.
    Thanks in advance,
    Douglas

The common theme I'm seeing here is that the setting edits you make in
Distiller through the FM "Save As PDF" option don't seem to take effect.
Do you know if that is true or could you elaborate on the notorious nature
    of this method for me?
    >
There are too many potential and transient problems to list. The only thing
I can say is that I've been an active member of the FrameUsers listserv
    (http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/listinfo/framers) since FM version 6.0,
circa 2001, and probably 95% of the PDF problems reported there have been
fixed simply by using print to Adobe PDF (or to Acrobat Distiller in older
PDF versions), instead of using Save as PDF. Common advice there has always
been to avoid Save as PDF and even some Adobe employees have recommended
against using it. It doesn't matter which FM version.
The once-busy FrameUsers listserve has been fading away, recently, as this
new Adobe forum software allows reading via e-mail, and attachment of
screenshots.  Even if you look around on this forum now, you'll probably
find that there are two main fixes for issues with PDF. One is NOT using
Save as PDF, which seems to fix a whole bunch of issues. The other is the
use of a Windows hotfix to squash a Windows OS bug that causes dropped
    characters in PDFs.
In the rare instances that someone has issues with printing to PDF, they are
almost always related to errors in settings. Or occasionally someone can't
embed fonts because they are trying to the embed the virtual fonts that come
with their printer driver instead of fonts that have actually been installed
on their computer. (The fonts are hard-wired on their printer, so the system
can use them but not embed them.)

  • Why won't Acrobat X Pro honor the margin (art box) from PDF's exported from InDesign CS6?

Why won't Acrobat X Pro honor the margin (art box) from PDF's exported from InDesign CS6?
When I export a PDF from InDesign CS6 with specific margins, Acrobat does not recognize the Art box. (I have PitStop Pro 11 for page box view)

    Thanks Steve,
We are exporting PDF's as you indicate. I see the same thing. The boxes are all the size of the original InDesign document. The PDF art box should be predicated by the margins in InDesign. When we had CS3, this worked great. Now, it seems that there is a disconnect between the two Adobe products honoring the page box size. I have contacted the Adobe techs via chat, and they had no clue what I was referring to. I find it mystifying that Acrobat can not interpret the art box set in InDesign as margins.

  • PDFs exported from InDesign cannot be printed

Our Marketing Manager is using Adobe InDesign and exports her documents to PDF. These PDFs won't print in any of our printers in the office. It spools and then gets stuck and it actually makes our HP Coloured Laser Printer throw an error (error 79) and we'll have to restart the printer due to this error. We can print other documents and other PDFs in the printer so we know it's not a printer driver issue. In fact, we have isolated the problem to only PDFs exported from InDesign. Even if we create a blank document or add just text from InDesign and export it to PDF it still won't print. Really odd.
**I also posted this in the InDesign thread but was asked to post it here too. I tried printing the document using Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader with no luck. We tried printing directly from InDesign but it is inconsistent, sometimes it will print but most of the time it does not.

Hmm. Yeah. The ID forum may be more help. Especially if it's also a problem in ID.
My first suspect would be corrupt fonts or possibly an image file. Can you create a blank ID file with no text (maybe insert just an image or something that isn't on any of the other ID files) pdf it and print it?

  • Problem printing pdfs exported from IDCS3 to hp color laserjet 2550L

Since upgradingn to IDCS3, whenever I print a pdf exported from ID to my hp color laserjet 2550L, the graphics print with a red overlay and other colors change as well (black type prints brown, blue prints maroon). If I print the file to a .ps file, then distill it, I don't have the problem. If possible, I prefer to export because it's quicker. Is there a fix to this?
    Thanks in advance!

Check the HP site for a newer driver for your printer.

  • Font Embedding Question in PDF exported from PageMaker v7

I am having difficulty embedding the majority of my fonts in PDFs exported from PageMaker v7. When exporting to PDFs, a "cannot embed font" error is generated.
    Technical Details:
The fonts I have are ALL LEGAL, and were purchased with complete licenses when required.
The fonts properties show them to be completely embedable, with no restrictions in terms of installation, etc.
The fonts can be placed and embedded in PDFs from all other programs I've attempted this with (Illustrator, Acrobat, MSWord, WordPerfect, etc.).
    Disclaimer:
Yes, I know PageMaker is old, and yes, I am in the process of upgrading to Creative Sutie (although, as an aside, it is extremely disappointing that even a token discount is not offered to those who have purchased every Adobe and MacroMedia software package in the past, but I digress...). However, several of my clients require PageMaker files (for a variety of reasons I won't go into here).
Thank you in advance for any advice on what might be the underlying problem.

When generating PDF output from Pagemaker, I've used 2 methods:
    1. File>Export>PDF
This method works fine for a limited number of fonts (AGaramond for example), which is why I started this post. Bob Levine had suggested using Distiller instead.
    2. File>Printer Styles>Acrobat
I usually used this method when an offset printer requires crop marks, since the other method does not provide an option for crop marks.
This opens a window with numerous options, the pertinent ones to my question are:
Printer: New 2002 PPD for Adobe PS Driver on file
    PPD: Adobe PDF 3015.102
    Postscript: Download Fonts (3 options):
         None
         True Type and Type 1
         True Type Only
When I choose download "True Type and Type 1", I get the same "cannot embed font" error if I use most of my fonts (with the exception of a few that work).
When I choose NONE for the option, the PS file is generated without errors.
Once the .ps file is generated, I then use Distiller 4 to open the file and output PDF file.
If I used "True Type and Type 1" for download font option, and the font does not generate an error, the PDF file is fine.
If I used "NONE" for download font option, when I open the PDF, it indicates that the fonts are embedded. However, since I do not download the font, I am nervous that this might cause problems when I go to an offset printer.
I do not print to a file using a printer driver (for example Linotype, Acrobat, etc.). The 2 processes I've used seem to be independent of what the default printer is on the operating system (XP).
    Thanks!

  • PDF exported from InDesign missing background when opened in Illustrator

Hello, I am having a bit of a frustrating problem.
I'm working on graphics for a large project, and I have to get some of my files from InDesign into Illustrator (they are both CS5) for our printer.
I would have normally designed them in Illustrator but ALL my graphics are in InDesign and we just found out once we started on production that he needs AI and needs our trim path set up for our irregular shapes.
For MOST of the documents, its been pretty easy (exporting to PDF > opening in illustrator and making a cut path > saving as AI) however I have this one file that is making me lose my mind.
When I export it as PDF, it opens perfectly and looks normal in acrobat, and I also check it out in preview as well. The background shows up and everything. However when I open the PDF in illustrator it completely loses the background. I noticed it doing this before for a couple graphics, but I assumed that was because they had gradients drop shadows and transparencies and all that. This file has nothing weird except for a gradient grey background.
Help? I'm including some screenshots of whats happening in the hopes that you guys can help solve it.
So here we have me saving it, then opening it in Acrobat to check stuff out.
Now here is what happens when I open it in Illustrator:

Hi, Brie. I have been running into this issue for quite some time now. I also received the same response as you did. "Stop opening exported PDFs in Illustrator." This is an unsatisfactory answer for someone that works in the large format print industry that needs to preflight directly in the Illustrator program. I've done a ton of research and have been racking my brain for the last 2 years and have finally found sufficient workarounds for this issue. The downfall with these workarounds: all spot colors located in the gradients will convert to CMYK mixes. I'm still researching to see if there is a way to keep spot colors intact in these areas.
A little back story: InDesign is converting the gradients into something called NChannel. It enables more accurate handling of color blending by including additional dot gain and color mixing info. Both InDesign and Acrobat have the ability to display these elements whereas Illustrator, from what I’m finding, does not. Which is why we’re seeing gradient elements drop out when opened in Illustrator.
    Workaround for CMYK Gradients
Open PDF exported from INDD in Acrobat
Go to Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors
Object Type: Smooth Shade (this tells Acrobat to hone in on Gradients only)
    Color Type: DeviceCMYK
Check Embed next to Conversion Profile (should be SWOP)
Expand Document Colors on the right and Select DeviceCMYK in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
Workaround for 1 Spot Color in Gradients (Converts Spot Color located in Gradient to CMYK – all other Spots stay intact)
Open PDF exported from INDD in Acrobat
Go to Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors
Object Type: Smooth Shade (this tells Acrobat to hone in on Gradients only)
    Color Type: Spot Color
Check Embed next to Conversion Profile (should be SWOP)
Expand Document Colors on the right and Select the Spot that is located in the Gradient in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
Workaround for 2 Spot Colors in Gradients (Converts Spot Colors located in Gradient to CMYK – all other Spots stay intact)
Expand Document Colors on the right and Select the DeviceN spot color that is located in the Gradient in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
Please try this and let me know if you have any questions! I'm always looking for new problems to solve! Good luck!

  • PDF export from ID6 creates disproportionately large PDF files

When I create a PDF export from ID6 the resulting file is always disproportionately large, even though the documents contain no images, are mostly text, all graphics are vector graphics and the document is one colour. Then, after trying lots of different settings, including the lowest possible, I cannot keep the file size reasonable.
I have also tried reducing the file size from within Acrobat 9, but this doesn't have any effect.
The only thing that works is exporting the same document as an EPS, importing the EPS into Illustrator, and then saving that EPS as a PDF from illustrator. This creates a document which has, I think, the correct file size in proportion with its content.
eg., 2 page ID6 doc to PDF = 12.8mb. Then the same 2 page doc saved as 2 separate EPSs, converted to PDFs and then combined as 1 document = 708kb!
This seems to be the only way of reducing the size of the PDF, but as you might expect, creates a huge bottleneck in my workflow.
    Can anyone help?

You could try adjusting the transparency settings or the image settings.
Be certain you know what you're adjusting before you attempt this, though.
I've had some luck with just going to: Document > Reduce File Size...
I'll let some of the "real" experts chime in on this because I really don't
want to lead you down the wrong path here.
    Thanks!

The Finder reports File information. The date and time of the photo are in the Photo's Exif metadata. The Finder has no awareness of this. All photos apps on any system do.
