Trouble with SuperDrive: disks won't eject, "felt" peeling

It appears as though the slot in my computer and the SuperDrive itself are misaligned, making it hard for me to eject disks. Note that the disks mount when they're inserted.
Additionally, the "felt" or lining around the slot is coming off.
What should I do to get everything working again? Is there any way to fix these problems without having to spend a ton of money? I'm a college student and don't have much to spare.

I am neither of those things, but I appreciate the link.
I took the PowerBook to the Genius Bar today. The MacGenius told me the repair would likely be in the $600 range , so he recommended I simply look into purchasing an external CD/DVD drive from www.macsales.com. This one from OWC looks like a winner:

  • I am having trouble with iPhoto-it won't launch.

am having trouble with iPhoto-it won't launch and leaves a blank white screen box and spinning wheel of death-if I re-install software-will I lose all photos and faces settings? Any ideas-this is a Mac Pro and Xserve school system.
It seemed to stem from when I was transferring some movie footage from an HD camcorder to iMovie.
This is a school system and I'm worried I may lose many photos and face recognition data.

    1. The library is separate from the application, so re-installing shouldn't cause an issue with the actual photos. But it would be foolhardy in the extreme to do anything without first backing up.
    2. Often these issues are caused by a damaged Library, so reinstalling doesn't change much.
    FWIW
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.
    Alternative approach:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

having trouble with time capsule, won't find backups

Usually a simple reboot will work.. Reboot the TC..
If that is not enough.. Restart the whole network from off.
Mountain Lion and to a lesser extent Lion.. have network issues and lose track of the TC.

I am having trouble with a form I created in Acrobat Pro 10. I created tabs etc, they all work wonderfully in Adobe, but once I uploaded it onto the web-based program for other users, the tabs only work  on page 1, I have to click on page 2 to keep tabbing through.  It won't tab into it.  Any advise?  Also, when the users open it it opens in the web.

  • Trouble with LaCie disk and time machine

    HI everyone,
I've been having trouble with using time machine to back-up to my 1 TB LaCie drive (purchased 5/12, unfornuately I was dumb and didn't register the drive and no longer have the box with the serial number and there is no serial number on my drive. The only problem I had up until the end of August was that every so often the LaCie drive (using my FW 800 port) would unmount after waking up from sleep.
The end of August the drive unmounted for no reason while I was on the computer doing a task. Could not get the LaCie drive remounted (rebooting, etc. etc.) To make a long story short, ended up calling apple care who took me through resetting my SMC and PRAM to no avail. Was booted to higher level of support who walked me through trying to repair my drive using the disk utiltiy. When that didn't work, she walked me through erasing and reformatting the LaCie drive and starting a new time machine back-up. Every thing ok until about ten days ago.
Last week, when I woke my iMac up from sleep, I got an error saying that the disk was not ejected properly and I could not mount the drive. Restarting did nothing, the disk did not  mount. Shutting down and rebooting seemed to solve the problem and the disk was mounted. Every so often I've had the problem with the disk unmounting after waking up from sleep before. So, I changed my energy sleep preferences. At the end of the day when I am done, I'd unmount the LaCie drive before putting the Mac to sleep using the apple menu.
Today I came in to start my day, plugged the drive in and it would not mount. Tried rebooting nothing. Went into the disk utility, at first the LaCie drive passed the disk verify (6:26:25 and 6:26:38). Then I went into repair disk on the indented drive at 6:27:13, I wasn't sure what it is was doing, thinking that it had hung, I stopped the repair at 6:27:24. Exited disk utility, and the LaCie drive mounted. But I was getting a read only error when I tried to back-up using time machine. So, I went back into disk utility at 6:27:35, when I verified the disk (indented disk), I got an error saying the disk need to be repaired. After several minutes the disk could not be repaired. So, I erased and reformatted the drive. Ran a time machine back-up and it seemed to back-up everything on my hard drive. Just ran another verify disk and it passed.
Is the drive failing? Have some other back-ups of my documents, my address book, iCal and am going to make a backup of some of my pref files and important e-mail files and am going to do some more back-ups after I am done.
Have reached out to the women at apple care whom I talked to last August, but don't expect to hear back from her for at least 24 hours.
Here is my disk utility log

I just got a call back from the upper level support person at apple care who had been advising me on my trouble with time machine and my LaCie 1 TB FWD. I had sent her much of the same verbiage as I posted here. As some of you have probably figured out, the verdict is that the drive is probably failing. She says this because I have had to do two erase and reformats. She thought that the intermitant problem that I have had with the drive unmounting when my iMac wakes from sleep could be related to the drive failing.
In the meantime I have a secondary back-up (not using time machine) and the LaCie  1 TB FWD is working for the moment.
Thanks to all who read all my verbiage.
And in the meantime, I've learned something. I marked this question as solved. But I'm open to other things to try.

  • Trouble with install disks - is it OK to make a copy of them?

Finally, I am trying to make a copy of the install disks that came with my MBP. This was recommended in several threads for preserving the original and having backups just in case.
I used Disk Utility to make a disk image - choosing DVD/CD master, no encryption - as I was instructed on another thread. I made the disk images fine of the 2 disks - they are now saved as disk images in the .cdr format. While I was at it, I made a disk image of the TechTool Deluxe CD that came with my AppleCare.
When I inserted a CD (and then I tried a DVD) into the slot to Burn the disk image of the first (and then the second) install disk, I got the message that there is not enough room on the disk I am trying to use (for either disk). I had no trouble burning a disk of the TechTool Deluxe - I did that on a CD.
When I go to Get Info for the disk image for the 2 install disks, it looks like each is no larger than 5 plus GB, which seems strange.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Mrs H

When you make images of the discs, it is compressed. So when you get info of the image, that is smaller than the actual disc size. You said disc two was 3.97gb but really uncompressed it is likely over 6GB. For both install discs one and two, you need dual-layer DVDs to burn.
    Thanks for your help, mdpeterman.
I wondered about the compressed issue - but since I chose CD/DVD master, (from Disk Utility Help: "If you want to use the disk image with a third-party application, choose CD/DVD master. The disk image contains a copy of all sectors of the disk, whether they're used or not, and copies them to other CDs or DVDs bit for bit") with no encryption I assumed that the size of the disk image was identical to the original.
What you say tells me I'm wrong - that even with DVD master bit for bit, the image is compressed. Right?
I'll get back to you when I have solved this...

  • The disk won't eject after Time Machine backup

Each time im doing a time machine backup, the external drive does not eject, the icon becomes pale, but remains on the desktop. But when I did not just make a backup I can eject it normaly.
My disc contains two partitions, one with the backups. When my problem occurs the first partition is ejected but not the Time Machine one.
I tried to reformat the partition but the problem persists.
My hard drive is a GDrive mobile usb 1 TO purchased at the apple store.
    Did someone has a solution?
    Thank you !
PS; sorry for my bad english

Actually i found a potential solution, in majority of time it solved my problem, but some times (less frequently then before) it doesn't work And the disk still not eject. In the timemachine Settings, did the principal switch button is on "yes" or "no" ?
I was backing up manually, and I had put the switch to NO, and i think that was what cause the problem... When I Switched to YES, my disk ejected correctly for 95 % of time.
Try to turn this switch ON , if she is OFF.
I dont think that the problem is the age of the drive, mine is a 2014 one and i had this problem too.

  • Problem with superdrive which ill not eject a cd

Processor  3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Serial Number  W8003MAJ5PC
    Software  OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
The superdrive will not eject a c.d. I have tried the holsing the eject key on start-up trick and several others but to no avail.
I also know that this is a common problem on iMacs and Mac Books so I was wondering if anybody has come up with a solution to the problem.
Incidentally, the drive was used on fewer than 10 occasions when it malfunctioned.

    If you haven't tried already:
Restart the computer while holding down the click button on the mouse.
Open Disk Utility and if it shows up there you might be able to force eject.

  • Installation Trouble with Photoshop Disk

I'm trying to reinstall photoshop cs3 from the original disk. I have the correct serial number and it says it's invalid. Later, I had upgraded to cs5 and tried that serial number and that does not work either. I had to do a fresh reinstall after my computer got reconfigured. I'm on Windows 8.

you can upgrade to ps cs6 from cs5 and cs5.5:  http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/buying-guide-upgrades.html
but i think you may have problems with everything you try until you properly remove your previous ps versions.
to start, run the cleaner:  http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
then try to install which ever program you really want.
if you only want cs5, just install it.  you don't need cs3 installed in order to install a cs5 upgrade.  you will need the cs3 serial number (and the cs5 serial number).
if you want both (or all 3) cs3 and cs5 and/or cs6 installed, install cs3 first.
but, do one thing at a time.  adding complications to your installation probably won't fix any fundamental problems caused by whatever button your pressed.
do you know if that button was a rollback or restore button that restore your computer to a time before you installed cs3?

  • Trouble with encryted disk image

OK.. here it goes. I'll start with expected "I'm new to Macs". I recently purchased my first Mac. Its an iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.2. In the interest of securing my personal files I wanted to create an encrypted disk image to store them. So I opened up Disk Utility and with Macintosh HD highlighted in the left column I selected the "New Image" button. I think that was my first mistake, selecting the "New Image" button when Macintosh HD was highlighted because the resulting dialog only offered me Save As, Image Format and Encryption. It did not offer me Size, Format or Partitions. I selected to save the image as "Vault" in my Documents directory, and I chose compressed and 128 bit encryption.
Next I hit create and entered my administrator password and provided a password for encryption. It started chugging along and I noticed it was reading my entire Macintosh HD. The process took a good while. Finally it completed and as a result there was a (roughly) 150 GB .dmg image in my documents directory with the name I provided (Vault.dmg). FYI.. I had about 150GB of data on my HD when I started this little adventure.
Moving right along, when I tried to mount the disk I get an error saying "..(no mountable file systems". Here is the log output from disk utility:

    2010-02-06 07:34:29 -0700:
FYI.. after I tried to mount the disk image via the disk utility I see a ghosted "Macintosh HD" appear under my Vault.dmg. To make matter worse I can't erase either of these because everything on the Erase tab is disabled (grayed out). So at this point I'm pretty sure I created a compressed disk image that has a copy of all my data which is not what I wanted.
At this point I just want to erase this ridiculously large and unmountable disk image, and start over. Can any of you fine people help me?
    Thanks.

Some systems will auto open. With my settings, I right click and mount the disc image, then play. When I'm finished, I eject the "disc." If you're not ejecting the mounted image, perhaps the Mac is confused about which disc to play.

  • Disk Utility hung up & disk won't eject

I'm going to try to keep this as brief as I can but I did a lot of things wrong. I had a Time Machine backup drive that I believe got corrupted. I reset Time Machine by turning it off and deleted the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file. I then tried to erase/reformat the backup drive. The erase began okay then slowed so much that I could hardly tell whether there'd been any progress after a couple of hours. I eventually forced Disk Utility to quit. After restarting the system, I then restarted Disk Utility and tried the erase again (I checked the secure options and none of them were checked). This time, it proceeded much better. I then had a problem when I tried to get a new Time Machine backup going. It froze for over an hour with only 37.5 MB out of 105 GB completed. I used Activity Monitor to stop backupd and then shut down the system. It never completely shut down until I forced it. Now, I've restarted the system and reconnected the backup drive. It appears to be okay. However, I can't eject it. I then launched Disk Utility to verify/repair it, if necessary. Disk Utility is hung up trying to populate the volume list and I don't know how to proceed from here.

I verified it with no errors. I'm going to try to reformat the external drive with our PC. I'm not sure that I want to try reconnecting it to this machine. With the DU freeze and inability to eject, I force quit DU and then shut down. However, it wouldn't completely shut down. I then disconnected the external drive and that caused my screen to be shaded dark gray with a message that I had to force shut down with the power key (is that what a kernel panic looks like now?).

  • 2 Problems - Screen Remains Black & Disk Won't Eject

The other day the machine turned on, but the display remained dark. I played with the F2 & F1 keys without success, then I inserted an OS disk into the slot, turned it off, turned it back on and help down the 'C' key.
Nothing. Then I pressed the F12 key.
Nothing. Then I turned off the mac, and restarted, holding down the trackpad.
    Nothing.
So now I have a machine that is obviously turned on, but displays nothing, and refuses to eject the OS disk.

Since I'm getting zip in the way of replies in this forum, I'm going through the (tedious) process of putting in a new clock battery, which makes the battery replacement in the tower of a PC seem like a walk in the park.
OK, you have a slower version of the machine I have, and I have also replied to your other post with some further questions. The clock battery is a lithium-ion rechargeable battery, which has an indeterminate life-span, I guess. I just replaced mine after having the machine for 7.5 years as it was finally failing to hold a charge.
To fully charge a replacement battery, you need to take the main battery out and leave it overnight on the charger, otherwise it might be a week or more before it charges with the main battery in.
BTW, how is the condition of the main battery? How many green LEDs illuminate when you push the test button on the battery? It should be all of them for a fully charged battery. Finally, another weakness has been the charger, though Apple did make the wiring a little more robust over time. You should have either a green or orange "ring" of light around the connector at the back of the powerbook when the power adapter is supplying power to the computer. Orange when it is charging and green when the battery is charged.

  • Error message trouble with ipod disk

I am trying to download my stored music from my ipod to my new ipad.  When I plug the ipod in to itunes I get a error message "disk error, unable to read disk".  Is there a fix for this?
    Thanks,
    M1chael323

    Running Mac?
make sure itunes isn't updating your ipod, but DO NOT EJECT it!
    Run disk utility,
once opened, on left hand side click on ipod then click VERIFY.
it should tell you there is an error found, click repair, it should sort it out.
let me know how u get on!

  • Trouble with restored disk after HD failure

My HD failed and I restored it using a backup from time machine (complete reinstall using the CD) Now, when I move something to the trash it asks for my password. When I move folders the changes don't stay made when the machine is restarted. So far I have:
    1. repaired permissions both from the desktop and from the original install disk.
    2. verfied disk...volume is OK
    3. Trashed the com.apple.finder.plist file.
Still having the same problems. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Reading this thread here you may have a permissions issue with your Home folder. If that is the case then Kappy's post in this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10675415&#10675415 detailing how to reset the permissions on your Home folder should help (obviously substitute your own name where required).
