(True) "Real" Stereo tracks converted to Mono after 5.1 update

Hello:
I have true stereo (as opposed to dual/centered mono) vocal and guitar tracks included in my most recent project. When I played everything back yesterday I noticed that all the "real" instruments had been converted to mono. I checked the source AIFF files and discovered they are still stereo. I typically record multiple vocal tracks and the export the resultant combined vocals (mono) and clean things up in Amadeus Pro. I often split the track, offset one channel, merge the channels and save the now-stereo file which gets imported back into GarageBand. This saves me from having literally hundreds of iso vocal tracks to deal with and it also opens up the vocals by spreading them across the stereo image.
The unwanted stereo to mono conversion has happened once or twice the past and I've never really figured out a remedy other than reimporting the AIFF files.
I was simply curious if anyone had experienced this phenomenon before and discovered a fix before I began the task of reimporting the stereo tracks. Btw, earlier versions of the project were unaffected by the update (if indeed it was the 5.1 update that cause the problem)—so it appears that only the current working project was altered.

I discovered I had only one option (mono) until I unplugged my Mbox and selected System Setting as input source in GarageBand. At that point, stereo became available as a option and I went track by track enabling stereo playback. Thank you very much for your assistance! While I'm not entirely certain why having my Mbox selected as the input source changed all my "real" tracks to mono, at least I don't need to go through the hassle of re-importing the source material. I need to use the Mbox for guitar and bass tracks, so hopefully this was a one-time oddity.

On the Channels Strip (of the Audio Track with the Audio Region), ctr+click on the left segment of the Input Button. That opens a popup menu where you can select Left (only the left channel of the Audio Region is played as mono), or Right (only the right channel of the Audio Region is played as mono).
Once the signal flow of the Channel Strip is mono (one channel), you can use the "Mono➤Stereo" version of some plugins to convert the Channel Strip to a stereo channel.
About your second question. If you are referring to the little blue "Catch Playhead Button", that automatically scrolls the Workspace when the Playhead reaches the right border to keep the Workspace visible. You also can also enable the "Scroll in Play" mode in the local View Menu. That one locks the Playhead in the center and scroll the Workspace "underneath"
However if you are referring to that little Play icon in the left upper corner of the Region Header (only visible in the Editor), that one, the "Solo Play Button", only plays that Region in solo mode. It is basically a combination of "Play " and "Solo" in on button. You can find all those little informations and much more in my graphically enhanced manual "Logic Pro X - How it Works".

Create 2 stereo tracks from 2 mono tracks

If I send a FCP sequence to a STP mulitrack project it opens with a left channel (A) as the on camera mic and the right channel (B) as the wireless mic. Since I want both to come through both channels I assume I should make the edits/corrections on both, then insert 2 new blank tracks. I'll then copy/paste each of the previously mono tracks so I have 2 stereo track, right and left A and right and left B. Does this sound correct or am I missing something here?

No. One work around would be to create a stereo sub mix channel, this would at least give you a single fader but it won't help you when editing. You could try grouping the video and two audio, then they should be easier to select.

OMF importing Stereo Tracks are Seperate Mono?

Hey guys,
When you import OMFs into audition, each stereo track from FCP comes in on a seperate mono track. How do you make the 2 tracks that were originally stereo in FCP stereo in Audition so you dont have to make the same edit to the two seperate mono tracks every time? This is killing me.. Im reading about this mix pasting idea and making a new stereo file but I have to do this for every track that is imported into my multi track project?? I'm so confused. Anyone got any tips?

Yes, this is a bit of a snag... and one that for a completely different reason I ran into myself recently. The best solution I've come across so far (because it's free, and does exactly what it says it will) is Sound Devices' WaveAgent. Essentially, if you can easily decode into mono wav files, it will pack them into whatever format you want, all as one file. I use it to encode four mono files into one four-channel R64 file, which means that when you import it into Audition, it does exactly what you want - all edits occur on all four channels. It would do just the same for stereo.

I know this is probably something ridiculously simple :-)...but, I CANNOT figure out why a stereo track I'm working with is looking like a mono track in edit view.
What am I missing?

Yup...
Go to View>Waveform Channels and take the check out of 'Layered'...
Incidentally, the clue was that you have both channels displayed at the top of the screen - Layering is the only thing that will superimpose them.

How to split stereo track into 2 mono

How to split a stereo audio track into two seperate mono tracks (Left, Right).

Also, where you select mono or stereo for a track below the level meter you can click + hold and select L or R. Instead of bouncing, you can convert the files, for me this gives fewer room for error. Also disabling UTM works in some cases, but this is not ideal for every session.

Making two mono tracks from one stereo track?

I've used the M-Audio MobilePre USB device to record vocal and guitar at the same time. In GarageBand, this inputs as one track, with guitar on the left channel and vocal on the right.
I'd like to separate this one stereo track into two mono tracks for further mixing and editing.
Any ideas on how to do this?

Splitting stereo tracks to mono for separate editing?

Does anyone know of a way to split a stereo track into two mono tracks inside of Logic Pro 8?
I'll explain my problem, I have a track made from samples of a song. In the track that I recorded, there is one particular sound that I can't get rid of no matter how hard I try. I recorded the passage with the ESX24 in stereo and I noticed that the noise is only on the left track. My first solution was to pan the track all the way right, create a duplicate of that and pan it hard left. Unfortunately, it loses a lot of clarity and texture when I use this method..
Looking on the forums, all I could find was instructions to bounce the tracks to split stereo, but I need them to form separate tracks within Logic so I can apply a LowPass filter to the problematic left track, then mix them back together as one stereo track later....
Any suggestions?

You guys are talking about different things. The OP says he's using an exs24 instrument with a sample that has a noise on one side of the stereo field of a SAMPLE not an audio region recorded into logic. Samples used by the EXS24 are not added to the audio bin, only into the EXS24's RAM. You could pan the instrument track to the side without the noise, and then output the result to a bus track that is set to MONO. That will pan your one sided sampler back to center. You can also bring the sample into logic (using the browser) and then split it as eriksimon suggested, and then create a new EXS24 instrument using only the good side of the sample.

Stereo audio rendering as mono

My husband and I recently purchased a MacBook Pro last November, recently installed Final Cut Pro 5 on it 2 months ago, and now we're experiencing audio problems we've never encountered before.
Fresh new project, new timeline, import a stereo audio file, double click and playing from the viewer it's perfectly fine, but put it on the timeline, shows up on two separate tracks and needs rendering, we render it and it turns into mono. It didn't do this before, we don't know what we changed, it used to work but now it doesn't. We must have changed something but we can't figure out what we did wrong. Even if we separate the stereo track into two mono tracks on the timeline, pan one left and the other right, it remains mono.
Please help, we're completely stumped on this one! Thanks!

The only problem with converting the audio files to 48 is that we have about 200+ audio files, living on about 17 layers, each with their own settings for speed and reverse and eq and more. Going back to reimport all that stuff would kill our deadline by about 40 hours = not possible.
But I did download that utility you suggested, it discarded our prefs, and now everything seems to be better. I'm having to "fool" FCP by placing an EQ filter set for 0 gain (i.e. no change) onto each clip, which trashes the render file, and when it rerenders it's ok, sometimes. For the ones that aren't changing out of mono I go back in and throw away that eq filter and re-render and then it's in stereo. Very strange. Also strange is that some of these animation clips now have 1 frame of black at the tail end before cutting to the next clip - very odd since the original files have NO black at all.

Editing Stereo Tracks

Here's my situation; I want to be able to edit a stereo pair at the same time with all changes I apply to the left being applied equally to the right. I need to tweak some of the audio, take out background noise, adjust levels, etc. and my stereo pairs will only import into STP as two separate tracks. When I try to make changes to one track and then apply the same settings to the 2nd track it's too much and the audio sounds like crap. Not to mention it's twice as much work.
How can I get STP to make the audio I've imported from FCP show up as A1 & A2 (for example) on one track so that I can edit them at once and hear how the effect sounds when applied to both? It's just dialogue so I don't need stereo separation. The doorbell sound effect I'm using from STP shows as A5 & A6 in STP and in FCP it looks just like the other audio tracks (a linked stereo pair).
Background;
Some of the audio was recorded on one camera using a boom mic going into input one on the camera. So it was mono and I copied and pasted it to track 2 in FCP and linked it to make it a stereo pair.
The remaining audio was recorded on another camera using the on-camera stereo mic so it came into FCP as a stereo pair from the start.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have Soundtrack and was wondering much the same thing. From your discussion it appeared that one could not split a stereo track into the two mono tracks and then work on each separately. However, upon reading the Help manual for Soundtrack 1.5 at page 167, it explains how one may export a stereo track as two mono tracks as follows:
To export individual tracks, busses, or outputs:
1 In the Timeline, select the tracks, busses, or outputs you want to export, then choose
File > Export > Export Selected [item].
The [item] shown in the menu changes depending on whether tracks, busses, or
outputs are selected.
If nothing is selected, each unmuted track, bus, and output in the project is exported as
an individual AIFF file.
2 In the Export dialog, choose the sample rate for the exported files from the Sample
Rate pop-up menu.
3 Choose the bit depth for the exported files from the Bit Depth pop-up menu.
4 Optionally, select the “Output dual mono files” checkbox to export the selected tracks,
busses, and outputs as dual mono files, then click Save.
5 Browse to the location where you want to save the exported files.
6 Click Export.
Each selected track, bus, or output is exported as a single stereo AIFF file or as a pair of
dual mono AIFF files. Muted and unselected tracks, busses, or outputs are not exported.
This might solve your problem because you can then import those two tracks back into soundtrack and work on them separately.
It worked for me.

Convert two mono tracks into one stereo?

I've imported a clip from my DV camera into Final Cut. For whatever reason, the clip audio is two mono tracks rather than one stereo track. Is there a way for me to convert this to a stereo track after the import?

Select both clips in the Timeline, then go to Modify->Stereo Pair (Option L). But if both clips contain the same audio information, it won't really be stereo ... just two tracks panned left & right.
If you want the audio to come in as stereo when you capture next time, make sure that you have the Capture settings for the audio set to "stereo."

Sorry, but your intentions here aren't clear.
Do you have two mono signals on one stereo track, or are you talking about two separate mono tracks that should be stereo, and you want them as a single stereo track?
With the latter, open one file and copy it to the clipboard. Open the other file, and use Edit>Convert Sample Type to convert it to 'stereo' (really dual mono). Select just the side you want to replace, highlight it and hit Delete - this should leave your original file on one channel, and nothing on the other. Place the cursor at the start of the empty section and paste the clipboard contents here. Save the result. You now have a stereo file.
If you have a dual mono file and you want some stereo ambience on it, then have a look at SHEPPi. This does a remarkably good job of that on mono files!
There are several other ways of doing file combining - you could do it quite easily in Multitrack mode, and there are also some utilities around that will do it directly for you - although you could easily be forgiven for being completely unaware of them, because generally they are used for reorganising multi-channel Broadcast Wav files, and don't show up using a simple search term.

ADAT stereo recorded as split mono: best way to convert to stereo?

Hello everyone,
I have session material on an ADAT that have stereo files split on two mono tracks (e.g. channels 1 & 2) and thus were recorded in logic on mono audio tracks (e.g.1 & 2). What is the next step to insure easy editing abilities?
For example, is there a “link” button similar to FCP that will allow edits to effect both tracks? If not, should bounce the two audio tracks into one stereo track? “Convert to Stereo” does not work in the audio window, as Logic does not recognize these as split stereo files. Same seems to apply for "convert regions to new audio files" in the arrange window.

hi and thanks. The files have two circles where the name is. it's weird b/c I have another stereo track which is a copy of the track that isnt playing corectly that works fine with split level meters showing. I have an output track set to 1 + 2 which shows two split level meteres as well.

Workflow for moving stereo tracks to mono?

Hi everyone,
I'm a relatively new Audition user (using the latest version of CC); I've been using it to create podcasts using the multitrack editor and flagging out footage with markers in the waveform editor. I recorded a skype conversation and I wanted to mix the audio for a new episode, and I'm hoping that someone can help me with a suggested workflow. In the screencap below, the audio got recorded with stereo channels, and what I am attempting to do find the quickest way to create a two mono channels from what is two stereo channels (although the right channel of one didn't include any audio) – and balance the audio levels between the two mono channels. Screencap enclosed of what i'm beginning with.
I know the multi-track editor can accomplish some of this using the bus feature, but I want to first get this audio right because i want to make markers in the wave form to flag out footage, so i figured that destructive changes to the audio are best. I'm aware that i can extract audio channels to mono and use the match volume feature for clips, but i'm wondering if someone might be able to point me to a quicker/better way.

In Waveform view, use Edit/Convert Sample Type and just select mono in that section of the conversion options.
The balancing of levels between the two is best done in Multitrack where you can listen--though, looking at your waveforms, you might find it gets easier if you normalise (Effects/Amplitude and Compression/Normalise) to reduce that loud track down to levels closer to the quiet one before you start.
It's worth saying that, if your session is set up to end up in mono, you may well not need to convert your files anyway but this depends on your workflow. If it was me, I think I might convert to mono (even if not strictly necessary) just for tidiness.
