Trying to boot from usb need help ASAP
Hi everyone i have a compaq presario CQ 40-330 TU laptop. Its dvd drive has failed few month ago and as i did not use dvd drive much so i did not replaced it instead i made a bootable windows 7 repair usb with this following procedure http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-repair-windows-7-from-usb-flash-drive-repair-without-installation-... Hi. I think I have pretty similar problem on notebook HP Compaq NX6110 with crashed CD-ROM.
I've prepared the bootable USB drive using this procedure (with a small modification because I want to intall Windows XP):

Anyway, in bios setup I change the boot device options so that the "USB hard drive" is set as "the first" and USB Superdrive (slt) is set to the second... I save the settings etc. I restart the computer and in the blue boot menu that appears I can only choose Notebook harddrive and Optical drive (no USB).
Any ideas? Is it possible that this notebook does not support USB booting thought there is an option is BIOS?

"Missing Operating System" when trying to boot from USB
I have a macbook air (3,2), and I'm trying to install Arch onto the partition that currently has Ubuntu. I have tried a few different ways to get the Arch core iso onto the usb key drive, but no matter what I do, I am ending up with the message "Missing Operating System" when I boot into it.
I started out using the instructions from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/US … tion_Media for writing it on OSX, using diskutil unMount, then the dd with bs=8192, and of=/dev/disk2
When that didn't work, I tried booting into my ubuntu install, and used just a plain
sudo dd if=archlinux.iso of=/dev/sdb
Still no luck, so then I went to my old standby of unetbootin, which didn't do any better. I just tried yet again with the dd in ubuntu, and I'm still not having any luck.
Here's some of the relevant info I could find:

One interesting thing I noticed was that the dd took about 10 minutes in mac osx, and under 2 seconds in linux. That seemed like a pretty big difference between the two systems, but I'm not sure if that's related to the batch size on the write, or to the implementation of dd used in OSX.
Is there something obvious I'm missing? I know the computer is able to boot from this key drive because I was able to boot an Ubuntu livecd from it just a few days ago. Unfortunately, the MBA won't boot from my external cd/dvd drive because it's not the apple brand super-drive, and I don't want to spend the money for a super-drive, so a cd-based install isn't an option.
Really looking forward to playing with Arch, because some of my friends recommended it to me highly. I'm a former gentooer (years ago) who became fed-up with installing *everything* from source. I can't stand ubuntu doing everything for me, and debian always seemed so far behind the curve on everything, so Arch seems like the perfect OS if I can just get into the installer. :)

~MaquisOh, forgot to mention, I did the dd from ubuntu with both bs=4M and without a bs argument. the version without the bs argument is the one that went really fast.
Neither version would boot, so I don't think that the way I'm writing it is the problem.
I did just notice that if I just do a sudo fdisk -l without specifying the drive, I have 2 entries for my drive:

Macbook Pro won't turn on after trying to boot from USB
Hi guys,
My MBP wasn't getting past the grey logon screen with the Apple logo and the spinning loading gif.
I used Liondisk Maker to boot my copy OSX from a USB and his option when i turned it on again, which eventually loaded to the optional disks, so I clicked on the USB, after a minute or so nothing had happened and my screen just went blank, and the computer turned off.
Now it won't even turn on. It is plugged into the AC aswell.
Any suggestions?

Is it my imagination or does this board not allow booting from a USB device? Or am I missing something? Does this board not support booting from a USB storage device? I thought it did, but I could be mistaken.
I get no option to select USB to boot from in the BIOS, or when I select the boot menu. The device in question is an external Plextor DVD burner, as it's my only CD/DVD device I have an interest in getting this to work.

Do you have the Case Front USB ports plugged in? If so remove them as most cases are wired incorrectly and try one of the rear ports. The front ports should not be plugged into the MB until the wiring is checked.

I figured it out.
It usually helps to use a USB cable and not a Firewire when trying to boot from USB.
Both my USB and Firewire cable are silver, I thought I had triple checked it. I guess not.

Have bootable WD and Hitachi HDs in external USB enclosures. Have successfully cloned one of these WD) using Acronis. When trying to boot from the USB attached drive using PF12 and selecting the recognized drive on the boot menu get either BSOD or message unable to boot operating system. What gives? Know the WD will boot internally as it was the disk that came with the system. Get the BSOD with this disk in USB port.

As I understand it, Microsoft Windows 7 and earlier operating systems do not support booting natively from a USB Mass Storage Controller interface. The installers do from things like USB-attached optical disc drives and flash drives, but that's not the full operating system.
Support for booting from USB in the main operating system environment might be introduced in Windows 8—I thought I read something about this, but cannot seem to find a reference right now.

Need to boot from USB device with my Portege 7020ct

i need help!!!
situation: me and my girlfriend go for a long trip on tuesday. we have to work, so we bought a second hand portege 7020ct.
it has no cd or floppy drive. win98 is installed but without drivers for the modem. the infra-red can locate other computers, but is not able to connect.
so the onliest thing i have is one usb slot.
i want to install win2000 or at least put some data on the hard drive.
so i need to use my external cd drive or a usb stick. the problem is, the system (usb slot) found the external drive and the usb sticks, but i need to install some drivers to get them ready! but how???? --> no internet, no floppy, no internal cd, no infra red....
what can i do????
i tried to get into the bios to find out, if it is possible to boot from the usb slot, to perhaps get the external drive runnin and then install win2000.
but i can´t find out how to enter the bios!!!! ...but i´m not sure if this will work.
how can i get into the bios?
do anybody has an idea what i can do? how can i get drivers into the system?

Pressing the <esc> button on power up takes you to the BIOS settings.
Installing the drivers could be difficult. I have a 7010CT and there's no option to boot from USB (just floppy - hard disk - cdrom - lan). I don't think Windows98 supports USB sticks without extra drivers. I upgraded from Windows98 to Windows2000 by using an external PCMCIA cdrom and starting the installer from Windows98. Maybe you could try a PCMCIA network card of try to find a floppy disk for the Portege. -
Flex 15D Help reinstalling - Boot from USB
I'm hoping someone can help.
I have a Flex 15D (no optical drive) shipped with Windows 8.1
At present it is completely unresponsive, taking anything up to 5 minutes to recognise that I have clicked anything, open the task manager, etc. The task manager doesn't show anything heavy running, AV has scanned the PC and there are no infections. so I decided to go back to scratch and restart.
OneKey simply tell me that the recovery partition has become corrupted and can't be used.
I then bought a copy of Windows 8.1 from Microsoft, followed their instructions to create a bootable USB key and get windows 8.1 set up from the DVD onto it, but the Lenovo won't boot from USB. I have been in the BIOS, boot from USB is set, but the boot options give me the OS booter only.
Third attempt i went out and bought a USB DVD drive, connected that and tried to install a brand new Windows 8.1, but again the Lenovo won't acknowledge that there is a DVD drive attached (although it sees and uses it perfectly when it does finally boot into windows).
Can anyone give me any help as to how I could reinstall the laptop?

This morning, i downloaded about 16 songs to put on my ipod, and i manually dragged them over to my ipod to sync that way (like i always do because the music on my ipod came from a different computer which I no longer have) and on my way to work, i realized my ipod says "no content" under Music. However, when I plug my ipod into itunes and click on the music tab under my ipod name, all of my music is there. What happened and how do i get that music back on my ipod? I need help asap.
You had a glitch and the music files got corrupted. I know of no way to uncorrupt them.
You can try using a computer app like iFunbox

to see if yo can get them from the iPod in a usable file.
Otherwise you will have to re import them to your computer and sync

Yea I am. I deleted Logic Pro 9 and moved the App to the Trashcan like normal. Then when I go to install it, it says its already Installed. When I do this with other apps; it works fine, the install thing comes back up like it should once you have deleted the app

"Recovery HD" is a partition on your boot drive which you option or commnad r key held at boot time to get into and then repair the Macintish HD partition.
If you have this on a external USB thumb drive, then that's all it is, no OS X, programs or files.
If your talking a USB external drive, it has to be a OS X bootable clone made with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper and the option key held at boot time gives you that boot option.

So what your saying is you have a external clone and by holding the option key down at boot all you get is it directly going to Recovery HD?
There is no Startup Manager option to choose what to boot from?
This could mean Apple changed something, or your external bootable clone isn't one, or the wrong software used so it's not being recognized by Startup Manager as a bootable option.

very long story short, I want to boot from a USB 2.0 thumb drive/flash drive/portable USB Drive/whatever you wanna call it... I know how to on my home PC, but I can't figure out how to on my MacBook Pro(Intel). Is it even possible, and how can I set it up to boot from USB?
I expect it is possible to install a dual boot Mac/Linux system on the Mac/USB, but I doubt very much that the same Linux OS on the USB would then boot a Windows PC. You would use GRUB or some such for the dual boot, not System preferences in the Mac.
You would really need to ask these of type questions on the Linux forum.
You could do what you want using Parallels or VMWare fusion, and installing Linux on the Virtual Machine which can be on the USB. Even then you are actually booted from the Mac OS and running Linux under virtualisation.
Bootcamp is a dual boot system but only supports XP at present. -
Booting From USB with Yoga Pro 2
I am unable to boot any OS from USB on the Yoga 2.
I turned on Legacy Boot and changed the BIOS settings,
Yet I still cant boot from USB.
THe Linux OS starts booting, then the screen turns black and nothing happens.
Could this be a video or graphics driver issue possibly? Maybe drivers need an update?

the USB i tried to boot from works fine on my PC, so i know the USB is NOT the problem.Check your boot image properties, since by default only LAN and MASS Storage drivers will be injected into the boot image. an USB2Ethernet adapter may be an entire different driver class.
That's why, I create a folder in out-of-box drivers called "WinPE" and create a selection profile called "WinPE", and on my Deployment Share properties "WinPE" tab/pane, I select that selection profile, and check "Include
all drivers from the selection profile", this way you can be assured, that all drivers in that particular WinPE folder, are injected in the boot image, even if the driver class is not "network" or "mass storage"
