Dave I'm glad to say that it works perfectly but I'm embarrassed to say that my 12 year old nephew hooked it up in about 10 minutes.
If you have the Kanex Mini DisplayPort cable it will work, what confused me was changing the display settings in System Preferences,
and dragging the mac screen from the mac onto the tv. Sorry I cant be more helpful but you have the right cable now you need a 12 year old nephew.
    Good luck Derek

Don't use the CD software its not necessary.
Infact put it in the trash.
Your router will have an IP address in the range 192.168.1.1
Connect your router to your Mac via Ethernet cable (They usually supply one with the router and don't worry which end goes where the Mac LAN socket is bi-directional)
Also connect your router to your telephone line.
Now open your Web browser Safari . Type in the IP address above and a Javascript control panel will launch
Enter the default password and username (They are on a label on the router )
Your now have the ability to set up your router.
Your will need the password and user name supplied to you by your ISP at a minimum.
Enter these and most modern routers automatically configure the basic networking setting.
You now need to go to the security setting and set this as WPA2 Personal (NOT Enterprise) or WPA2 with AES and TKIP which ever it refers to and create a pass-phase. WRITE it down
    You should be online.
Now remove the cable and connect to the Wifi and enter that passphase.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

I keep saying this over and over, in the hope that people who do a search will find it.  Apple cannot possibly test for or be reponsible for the bazillion combinations of adapter, cables, and TV's out there.  The only monitors that are 100% guaranteed to work with the MacBook Pro are the Cinema Displays and Thunderbolt Displays, because, they're made by Apple.  They're expensive, but they work perfectly.
My guess is that you bought a cheap MDP to HDMI cable, or have a defective one.  From my reading of these boards over the past few months, cheap cables have a high failure rate.  And the regular priced ones have only a slightly less of one.  Try a new one.  Make sure you do not damage the Thunderbolt port.

  • "No Signal" on my Samsung TV when trying to connect my MacBook Pro

When I try to connect my MacBook Pro to my Samsung HDTV it says no signal. My Pro doesn't flash blue or anything. I'm using a rocketfish adapter with an HDMI cable connected to it. I got my Pro in June 2010. Any idea on how to get this to work?

    Hello TT31,
A quick fix you might attempt would be making visible, then clicking, the 'Detect Displays' button in the Displays pane of System Preferences. It can be made visible by holding the Option key once you've brought up the Displays pane (it will appear at the bottom right near the question mark).

If that doesn't get things working, I'd recommend taking a look through the following article, as it provides a whole host of useful troubleshooting steps for just such a situation.

  • Trying to connect my MacBook Pro to my TV

Hey! Hoping someone might be able to tell me how to connect my MacBook Pro to my TV.
Do I need to fork out for the appletv pack are is there a simply scart or HDMI connecting lead that I can use? Will I have sound problems if I try to use a simple connection?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated! Thankx

This is the forum for the Late 2008, Unibody MBP. It appears as though you have the previous model based on your description of the machine. Could you confirm that for us?
Depending on your TV's inputs, you could go a number of ways to connect the MBP to it.
    _Previous Generation MBP:_
If your TV has a DVI input, then a straight DVI-DVI cable will do the job just fine.
If your TV has HDMI, then there are DVI-HDMI cables available as well.
If your TV has a VGA input, then a DVI-VGA cable would be necessary. VGA is least recommended though; the picture quality is far inferior to DVI or HDMI if those inputs are present on your TV.
    _Unibody MBP:_
Because Apple has recently stated that it's mini-DisplayPort standard will be freely licensable, and the VESA standards group has adpoted mini-DisplayPort as part of the new DisplayPort standard, there will be many cables available soon to convert mini-DisplayPort into DVI, HDMI, and others. I know for sure that a mini-DisplayPort to HDMI cable will be available in the next couple months.
As for sound, you will need either a mini-Toslink (optical, carries 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound) or a 3.5mm (1/8") to stereo RCA cable. Both plug into the MBP's Headphone port.
All these cables can be found at monoprice.com or at a local audio/video supply store. I'd guess no more than $20ish for both audio and video. The DVI cable will be the most expensive.
    Good luck!

  • Trying to connect a Macbook Pro with a G4 circa 2000

    Hi,
I'm trying to connect my new Macbook Pro to my older G4 via an ethernet cable.
I've turned ON file sharing in the network pref's on both machines.
Have them attached directly to each other via an ethernet cable. I start up the Macbook Pro and then turn on the G4 but it doesn't show up as an option.
When I click on the ethernet option in the network pref's it states that I'm not connected.
I'm wondering if I should plug the ethernet cable from both the Macbook and G4 into my wireless router?
The G4 isn't set up for a wireless connection so something tells me this won't work unless the hard wire from both simply serves as a pass through.
    Anyone have any ideas?

according to the op, he's doing a G4 tower <---> Macbook pro.

a MBP isn't on the list that title heads up, so only a std ethernet is needed.
I did this with a PM G3 <---> 15" PB one time. The crossover cable didn't work. The std cable did.

  • How do I connect my MacBook Pro Mid 2010 to a VGA monitor

I have a MacBook Pro mid 2010 that I would like to connect to a VGA LCD monitor. It connects and I get the mac book screen saver but no desktop icons or tool bar. Am I missing a setting?

External screens are designed to work as extended displays for your computer's display. It means that menu bars and desktop icons won't appear, and you will only see windows if you drag them to the right part of the computer's display.
To change this, you have to activate video mirroring > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5019

  • Trying to connect my MacBook Pro to cable

I live in a dorm and we are given cable inputs to connect to a TV, thing is I don't have a TV. I bought a Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter in hopes of watching TV on my laptop. I can't find what cable to connect though. Can someone help me?

That is not how you watch television on a computer. To watch television programmes are a computer you need something call a TV tuner (it is an extra piece of hardware that is the size of a USB flash drive). There is a very good one for Macs. Its called EyeTV. It cost about $130 to $150. The video out that you're talking about is for external monitors or projectors for a presentation.
