Trying to find a compatible Hard Drive camcorder with Mac Mini/ iMovie

I have a Mac Mini with a iLife '06. I am looking to get a new camcorder. I heard the DVDs don't work in the slot. I would love to get an HDD (hard drive) based model if I could (Sony DCR-SR100)as tapes really don't excite me and I have a huge external Hard Drive for my music. Not a big techy, I plan on only using iMovie unless I enjoy it and then upgrade everything. Can I do it or do I need a tape camcorder. Any extra software?

I'm partial to Sony. I've owned the DCR-TRV22 for several years and have been very pleased. I believe it's been discontinued and replaced by the DCR-HC line.

Hey guys.
I'm trying to save some dats from my hard dri've, and have managed to take the hard drive apart, so that I can take out the circular disc with the data on.
The dri've is a Hitachi travelstar with model code: HTC424040F9AT00, and it's a 40gb drive. Does it have to be this exact model in order for me to put the disc into a working version of this drive, to get the data off? Can it be any travelstar?
Either way, does anybody know where I could get one of these?
Any help would be much appreciated?

I think most computer guys would say you're SOL at this point, but as I said, continue and see what happens. When I was doing research on the old Dell 20 gig Jukebox I had here, you could install up to a 40 gig hard dri've into a 20 gig unit and the unit would recognize the additional storage, but the one Hitachi guy I talked to didn't know if the unit would recognize a 60 gig HD. So from that I gathered that you could put your disc into a 20 gig unit, and it should read it.
Do a search on 'computer clean room' though, and I think your info on that disc is already bad. HD manufacturers take great pains to create clean rooms so that disc don't get dust on them, but surprise us and prove them wrong..

Is a Time Machine compatible hard drive formatted with Mac OS?

Probably not but the device supports AFP protocols which is necessary for communication with OS X.

I'm trying to clone a internal hard drive from another mac using a usb connection to an external drive so that I don't lose the file before reinstalling the software but I keep on getting a message:
"Restore Failure
Source volume is read-write and cannot be unmounted, so it can't be block copied."
Any advice on how to make a copy of this internal drive?

....also the internal hard drive i am trying to copying run on a mac os x 10.5 and i'm reinstalling the software because the computer is not starting and only shows a grey folder with a question marks inside.

I've had my Maxtor external OneTouch 250GB for about 18 months now and it hasn't skipped a beat. I have hear of people having their Maxtor drive just up and die but you will probably find that goes for all manufacturers.
By the way, Maxtor is, amongst others, an OEM supplier to Apple.

I can hold the option key at start up and choose my network, then Internet recovery shows up with an arrow pointing up. When I click on the arrow Internet recovery fails and all I get is a globe with a triangle on it with an exclamation mark on it, and under that it says

I had the same error. And i had a Computer that had worked, with a SSD drive and 16GB upgrade done by the owner himself.
I tried swapping with a Mechinal Harddrive, no luck.
Kept the Mechanical drive in, and tried with some other Ram, it worked..
So for me this error and after reading the other responses can be boiled down to a Harddrive problem or Ram issue.
It was Ram for me..

I created a new home folder on an external but didn't move my old files over. Now I can't see the old hard drive in my mac mini. How can I locate that drive?

I wanted to move my home folder to an external drive. I created a new home folder and in advanced options I moved it over. I didn't however move my files over first, my bad. I'm using Mavricks. I wanted to move my home directory to an external and went into sys prop/users/advanced options and moved the folder ok. Being a noobie on Macs I didn't copy my data and such. So my settings were all new. Basicly now I don't see the internal drive on my mini. There is a lot of strage I'm not able to access. The internal drive doesn't show up. Serious mistake: to connect a Mac to an external drive with data (important!) Windows, the warning appears: "You want to use the disk for Time Machine?" Wrong button, so in 2-3 seconds, the disk is formatted. Now Mac "sees" the disc but empty, Windows does not see it under "My Computer" but in "Disk Management" is reported as "hard core", "healthy", "GPT protective partition" Is there a way to retrieve the files? If just the hard drive is defective you could mke a bootable USB thumb drive or bootable Firewire HD. Not sure of the connecting cables for the monitor functions. This could provide the functions though.

That's correct. Remember that you're downloading it. Some people have download thresholds with their ISP and there's a cost after they go over their limit. ML is approximately a 4GB download. If this isn't a concern, you're good to go.

To install the file, if you did not download the Install Mac OS X from the Mac App Store, you must make sure your Mac Pro is compatible, it must be at least a Mac Pro3,1 to install Mavericks. If you are compatible, and want to install on a USB drive, first you must open Disk Utilities (in Finder, Applications, Utitlities) and then select the exernal drive from the devices listed in the left panel of the Disk Utilities window. Then decide if you want one or more partitions on the drive and the size of the partitions. Select each partition one at a time and name the partition and then choose the format as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and the Partition Table as GUID, and then Apply to format the drive.
Once that is done you place the Mavericks Installer DMG file on the desktop, double click to open and then choose the drive for installation to be the external drive you have formatted and named.
The installer will install and then delete itself when finished. If you want to keep a copy, make a copy and store it in a safe place, such as your Documents folder.
To boot to the external hard drive, restart the Mac Pro and hold the Option key. That will result in a grey screen with images for each of the bootable drives. Highlight the arrow under the drive you want to boot and then click that arrow again.
