Trying to fix Spotlight - Red Circle White X
I've been trying to fix my Spotlight for weeks now. I did manage to get my Spotlight icon to show up as a red circle with a white X in it. That's progress, I think... How can I go from the red circle to a working Spotlight?

What about a .Spotlight-V100 directory?
You may need to open up Terminal.app and type cd / (then hit enter)
Then type ls -al (then hit enter) and see if you have the directory. If you do you will need to be root to get into the directory.
Type sudo -s (then hit enter) and type your password. You should see a prompt with a #. Now cd .Spotlight-V100 (then hit enter) and type ls -al.
Post the result of the last question.

I use the 'locate' command to find things quickly inside Terminal. In the Finder I use Spotlight.

I tried to correct my Spotlight indexing by using a combination of the sudo mdutil -E / , sudo mdutil -i on / , and sudo rm -rf /.Spotlight-V100 commands from the terminal.
I am not sure what happened, but the computer went into an interminable color-wheel and, when I shut down and rebooted after an hour or two, I found that both my main drive and my backup drive had severe problems.
DiskUtility volunteered to correct these. I ran it on my main drive and found that my entire directory appears to have been erased.
Disk Warrior cannot repair. Nor can TechTool. Both declare that the directory structure is now beyond repair (which they also say of my former backup clone).
My main drive now has barely nine files left - and a handful of empty folders:

Though I did not run any file repairs on the back up drive, it has also lost all of its files (it shows just one remaining

FileSalvage is now beavering away, attempting to scavenge some 350Gb of applications, e-mails, photos, iTunes, and movies (most of which it is unable to name). But these will all be unlabelled and randomly organised by extension type. These could take months to sift through and the list is almost certain to be incomplete. I have no other backups of my system apart from a two year old clone.
Please tell me. Is there anything I can do to get back my lost directory structure?
Might there be some use of an Undelete routine that might recover the directory alone and thus allow me to salvage either disk?
I don't even know what sort of extension to hunt for in order to attempt such a restore
- nor how I might drop it back into its correct spot on the volume.

Yes, FileSalvage seems able to retrieve a vast jumble of unnamed "junk files," a tiny percentage of which are probably highly valuable to me. The problem will be finding them amongst the jumble. It could take weeks. ITunes files and MP3s are more promising, as it seems to have been able to reconstruct the files' names - and even cover art - from their metadata.
No. TechTool Pro wrote nothing at all. Sadly, though, I had allowed Disk Utility to reduce the number of threads or leaves or something in the volume directory, before I realised the gravity of the situation. It has thus made a very small alteration to my main drive (resulting, no doubt in the creation of those 9 system files and their containing folders). But the back-up drive had nothing further written to it since the apparent deletion of the volume.
I downloaded a freeware program called TestDisk which claims to analyse drive partitions. The partitions on each of my two physical drives (the internal and the backup clone) were not apparently affected - just the total loss of the volume directory structure on the boot partition in each case. So, would this be the wrong tool for the job? http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk It does claim to be able to "Rebuild NTFS boot sector." I don't really know what that means. Can anyone tell me whether a rebuilt boot sector will enable me to recover a deleted volume directory structure?
Meanwhile, I am also running a trial version of Stellar Phoenix, which claims to reinstate "lost/deleted volumes." It claims to have "found 6 lost/deleted volumes" already - after five hours, during which it has scanned about 5% of my 1.5 T external drive. So I suppose it may well take days to finish scanning. Then, I expect it may ask me to buy a serial code in order to proceed.
Does anyone have experience with Phoenix, or understand the jargon about lost/deleted volumes? Once I've bought the full version, is there a good chance it will actually reconstruct the whole volume as it once was - or is it more likely just to scavenge scores of thousands of nameless file snippets as per FileSalvage?
I don't have a problem with paying the boffins at Stellar if they are actually able to save me months of sifting through random unnamed files in order to locate the ones I've lost. -

If you are unable to get the iPod into Disk Mode to try and restore it, it's a very good indication, as mentioned in the article, that the iPod's hard drive is damaged and in need of replacement either by Apple or a third party repair company.

I have an Iphone 4s and i have two reocurring problems. So my first problem was after I had synced all my music most of the new songs and some old that never had a problem before had a red circle with a red square inside of it. I've gotten rid of it before but I dont even know how. I've read countless discussions and tried so many things that I dont even know what works. i figured it just fixed in time but there has to be an easier way that isnt so frustrating and annoying. So now my iphone isnt even being recognized. the apple mobile device is installed and running and has been stopped, started and restarted plenty of time. ive reset and restarted, reinstalled everything. my phone is charging, it just isnt being recognized by itunes or my pc. also in the device manager it isnt showing up. I am getting very close to smashing my iphone and switching to an android. everything is up to date and i also have tried to sync music on the first ipod touch that came out and even that isnt being recognized. I just want to get rid of the **** red circles and connect my iphone so i can sync it a million times in hopes that the red circles will just disappear. does anyone know why these red circles appear? Apple needs to get their stuff together and give us actual directions on how to fix this!!!! thank you for your help!!!

'Music'
Scroll to the bottom and enter your password to log onto your home sharing
Then connect to iTunes and sync! -
Cannot send some attachments or pictures red circle with line (FIXED)
After three weeks working with support on an escalated ticket to find the resolution on some obscure site relating to something not specifically "Blackberry" I figured I should share.
Problem:
Cannot send attachments larger than... Not sure of specifics but well bellow our Exchange Max settings.
Cannot send pictures as attachments. or forward some emails with embeded images
Both cases would result in a red circle with a horizontal bar.

I will let you read the above but essentially the data BDS is trying to push through IIS is too large for the cache (from what I can tell). Finally here are the changes I made to our IIS applicationhost.config file (copy paste to the bottom bellow the last tag). I referred to Exchange server in my previous post presuming you were running the CAS role on the Exchange server. If you have that running on another server, I would change it on there as well.

I updated to ios 7.1 on Thursday. My ipad basically does not work any more. I am running around in circles on this site and on other "forums" trying to fix. ??? Don't have time for this.....Any advice appreciated.

What do folders with a red circle and white dash in them mean?
i bought a used 2 year old macbook pro last week did an erase and install with leopard and once that was done with nothing transfered firewire the drive had over 20 gigs of used space on it so i started snooping around and saw a number of folders in a folder labeled base system that have a solid red circle with a white dash in the middle next to them after clicking on them it says i do not have permission even though i am in under admin? any ideas to what it is what to do or why it took over 20 gigs to install? i think it took less than 10 on the imac we have. thanks

the fact that you are an admin doesn't mean that you automatically have access to everything. those folders are owned by the system and have restricted permissions. you should not mess with them. those permissions are mostly restricted to prevent curious users with itchy fingers from damaging the system. as an admin user you can change those permissions and give yourself access to those folders but as i said you shouldn't.

20 Gigs sounds like a bit too much. have you installed any programs besides leopard itself? -
restored iphone from icloud so I could have all my old photos but now I cannot get it to restore or sync with itunes either by cable or by wifi. I have tried with automatic download off/on, I have had red circles, hours of syncing, nothing, help!!

My home movie DVD folders all have red circle with white dash and won't allow the files to be read. Is there any way around this so I can back up the DVD's on a external HD?
Drag the folders to the external drive, and if prompted, click Authenticate. You'll probably be asked for an administrator password.

Thanks, this is not an ideal answer but probably the most sensible one in my case.
I will try it unless someone has a better suggestion, but I'll wait a bit as it will take me a few days anyway (I had actually tried to create a new smaller playlist or download by album, but at this stage the music app is not letting me queue a list of songs for download - I think I will have to disable and re-enable iTunes match which will probably delete all the songs).
I have to say I am not very impressed with Apple here - having an online backup of all your data and beeing able to restore it to a new device easily was a strong selling point of iCloud. For music, they are Definitly not delivering at the stage. -
I am trying to sync my Ipad 2 to my Itunes account on my laptop. It will only sync my purchased music. All of my personal CD music that is on the account is grayed out with a red circle at the end. Please help.
Did you select all of the music to sync by clicking on the playlists or albums or whatever you use in iTunes - in order for them to sync? Or did you click on Entire Music Library if you want all of your music on the iPad?

Cannot delete email. Selected edit. Selected email and red circle with white check apprears. BUT, options at borrom of screen DO NOT APPEAR. I just get a grey band across he bottom of the screen.

In answer to your question, I don't know. However, drag the app store icon out of the dock. Then drag the app store icon from your application folder to the dock.
