Trying to get iTunes to work on an external drive.  Help?

Okay, so my computer's main hard drive is pretty full, so I've been moving all my music to an external drive. The issue I'm having is that I can't get iTunes to work on that drive. I know I'm probably not phrasing this very clearly, sorry. But anyway. I've installed iTunes on the external drive, and I've moved all my music to that drive. However, the iTunes music folder is still in My Music, and iTunes "can't find" any of the music on my external drive unless I specifically go and find them. Can I tell iTunes to look at this other folder for its default library or something? Thanks for your help.

Hopefully you moved the entire iTunes Media (or iTunes Music) folder to a new path on your external drive. Copy your iTunes library folder out to the root of the external drive, e.g. X:\iTunes (where X: is your external drive), then move the media folder inside it. Hold down shift as you start iTUnes and keep holding untila asked to choose or create a library. Choose the library at X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl. Should all be good.
Failing that, download and run my FindTracks script and point it at the new location of your media folder.

  • Fed up trying to get itunes to work.

I bought an ipod and I am beginning to think it was the worst purchase I have ever made. My wife got a sansa for Christmas and I can rip CDs and put them on it at will.
My ipod, when I try to transfer any previously purchased itunes songs, purchased with my only itunes account, whether on this computer, or on my old computer that I upgraded from, I get a cannot transfer error because I am not authorized.
I rip a CD to the computer fine, cannot sync the **** thing to the ipod. I spent two hours last night and still can't get them on my ipod.
I also have itunes at work, one of my authorized computers. I bought two albums on my account from work on break. Now I can't transfer them to the ipod because I am not authorized.
    What is the use?

If you only want to add songs and create and edit playlists on your ipod, you should try using an alternative to itunes. there is an app called Manager that's pretty cool. It's much faster and lighter than itunes. Besides, you can install it on your ipod, so you can connect it to any pc without it getting wipped out. cool huh?

  • After OS clean install I can't get iTunes to recognize library on external drive

I have a Mac Pro that had an SSD boot drive and a separate hard drive that contains my iTunes Library and Media files.  Because of problems with my boot drive I erased the SSD and did a clean install of Mavericks.  Now I can't get iTunes to recognize the iTunes Media files on the hard drive.  I've gone to Preferences/Advanced in iTunes and changed the "iTunes Media folder location" to point to the hard drive with the iTunes data on it.  Nothing happens when I do this. No dialogs. Nothing.  I've trashed iTunes preferences to no avail.  I don't know what to do to fix this or troubleshoot it.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Nothing should happen when you do this. This simply tells iTunes where to put anything you add after this. It doens't tell iTunes where anything already in iTunes is located.
Hold Option, launch iTunes, select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the hard drive.

  • How do I get iTunes to read from my external drive?

Ok, before you post this link http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748 please read this. That link only seems to give advice if you have your music on your computer's hard drive and you want to transfer it all to another drive. My problem is that all of my music is currently on an external drive. There is nothing to transfer or consolidate from my computer. I've gone into the preferences and set the iTunes music folder to the location on my external drive. The part about consolidating doesn't seem applicable in my case. So now that I've set the location of my iTunes music folder why isn't anything showing up in my iTunes library? Why can't I play any music?

So have any of this "external" music ever been added to iTunes? If not, go to File>Add to Library. Then navigate to the external hard-drive folder that contains the music.

  • So sick of trying to get iTunes 8.2 to work on Vista - 7 days of ****

After downloading £50+ worth of new music/audiobooks and tv shows last week, innocently clicked on 'upgrade to 8.2'; (yes I backed up my Library and hard disk first); result, the last 7 days of **** trying to get iTunes and my iPhone to sync. I'm so sick of this bloody iPhone, iTunes and Vista, if I could go out and purchase a replacement to iPhone and iTunes I would without a second thought.
I have tried absolutely everything posted on apple.com/itunes/support in the last 7 days - must have spent a good 4-5 hours a day over the last 7 days trying to fix this sodding fault.
At this point, I'm considering going back to CDs, and the simplicity of just putting a CD on and playing it. It seems but a far away, simple approach to listening to music, compared to the sodding **** of trying to get iTunes to work on my Vista Laptop.
So ****** off I'm thinking of getting rid of my iPhone (and yes I'm at the end of my contract) and going for anything that is Non-Apple.
Anyone else had this delightful experience with iTunes 8.1 and 8.2?

Read the iTouch forums and other iPhone forums... this is a big issue and a known bug. Apple contacted me right after I posted my issue. I downloaded it when it was released. My fix tonight was to downgrade to iTunes 8.1. This works for sure, so this is the only fix that I know truly works.

  • How do i get itunes to download on my external, and not my desktop?

I've been trying to get iTunes to download in my external hard drive instead of on my desktop; but every time I download iTunes it starts downloading automaticly onto the desktop. I don't have enough memory on my desktop to transfer all my music onto their, so how can I get it to download onto the external instead? If anyone could help me with this problem I would really appreceate it.

Download and install iTunes normally, launch it with the Shift key held down, and create a new library on the external drive.

  • Consolidating in iTunes once iTunes has been moved to external drive

    Hi there,
I am hoping somebody will be able to advise me. I followed the instructions on this video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbGmDJtQTGQ
to move my iTunes folder to an external hard drive so that I can free up space on my internal hard drive. I have also told iTunes in Preferences to look for the iTunes Media Folder location on my external hard drive:
    Volumes/MacBook Air Backup Drive/iTunes/iTunes Media
iTunes now works when my external drive is connected to my laptop (and doesn't work if my external drive is *not* connected); all that is fine. I have now saved space on my internal drive by deleting the iTunes folder that was on my internal hard drive.
    However, my Q is:
When I consolidate files in "Organise Library"-does this get saved onto my *internal* hard drive, and if yes, does it take up space? Does it matter that my iTunes library is now located on my *external* hard drive?
I'm not sure how consolidating will work now that my library is on my external drive, or does this not matter? Can I consolidate on my external hard drive or am I missing the point as to what consolidating means/does?
    Many thanks!

    Hey guys,
Yes, there is the portable library as well.  I worked with Kirk at Kirkville (Mac expert dude), and I basicallly had a portable setup, but he said the portable library left you open to functionality problems over time and I notiece that I didnt't get the "Script," dropdown menu in iTunes wihen it wasnt' set up like I suggested.  Also, from time to time you'd possibly lose files, run into sync issues.  He's a pretty knowledgable guy about iTunes, IMO he' the best but it's debatable, and he recommeneded highly leaving the library files on the local HD.
Initially I didn't have it set up this way, all my library files were in my external.  But I was starting to run into functionality, and like once a week I was having to locate a file or two and it was just a pain.  I"d try to delete or move the library file to the local, but they'd show back up on the external.  Finally, he had me delete iTunes, download it fresh and then all the library files were forced into the local drive. As I understand it, most of the "right way," "wrong way," descriptions of how to move your files to extternal follow this method.  I suppose it's personal preference though, if you're not having any problems.
I like this way, because it functions just like it would on an HD.  Since my media is on an external anyway, if I ever need to move it, I can connect the new client or drive to the extternal wirelessly or cabled, and simply transfer them.  As long as the media is on an external, moving should be the easy part.
Psych, I'm going to suggest if you like, message me and I can help you via email.  Then I can forward my correspondence with Kirk, and you can see exactly what he suggested and walked me through.  You may have already done much of it, but it's a good failsafe, as after I was done with his help....man the files now work just like they would if all on local.
Those plist files should be on the local.  Did you look in your library?  Click on "Go," whle holding option.  You'll see library added in as an option (other ways to access, but i use this one).  Then go down to your ituens foflder and rummage around in there, see wha'ts all around.
I just double checked my external, and the only library file I have there is the iTunes Music Library.xml.
Psych, did you perhaps drag or copy your library initially, before realizing there was a "proper," way to move the library?  I ask this, because I did.....and it was the root of a ot of my problems.  I moved it all back, then used the prooper way, but it never fully worked properly until I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled.  And hte big issue was teh library fiiles kept going to the external. What happens, is that iTunes is built to work with iMovies, preview, and many, many other applications that may use music or othher media.  Those apps don't know to look on the external, but will look in the user file, where their taught to find iTunes.  Having all the library files in the local, creates liek a "mirror," that tricks these apps into thinking they're accessing the media files, and functioning as if it was located llocally and not on external.  If library files aren't on local drive, then you're going to have problems.
To be honest, what I thnk consoldiate does, is just organizing the files.  For example if you had a media file of all your music, but it was created manually, and eadch file was in the file loose.  "Consolidate," creates an "artist," file and then puts the songs in subfiles.  I think under artist is album befor song.  If your external is doing this....then it's consoldiating..  That's the best thing I can suggest to verify it andput your mind at east.

  • I can't get iTunes to work properly on Windows 8

I can't get iTunes to work properly on Windows 8. I tried everything and iTunes is NOT compatible with Windows 8. There is either an iTunes issue or a Microsoft issue.

I finally got it to work right. Some files and folders (iTunes video files, etc) were referenced to my iTunes account, I copied from my backup (external) Hard Drive to my system Hard Drive. The only thing that can keep me from accessing my wish list for some time is a very heavy Internet traffic via iTunes players to iTunes Store. So everything is now NORMAL.

    Any ideas?

Fascinating just reading about your setup. I have a WRT350N and have noticed that it will drop its speed, sometimes down to 1Mbps. It seems to do so at about the same time every day, but usually comes back to speed in about 5 minutes. In my experience, the Apple TV will disconnect if the speed falls this low. Try monitoring the Linksys with Netstumbler, Vistumbler, or just in the Windows Network utility.
Check the "lease obtained" and "lease expired" times for your router to see if that is when the network fails. I've just finished reading an angry thread over at the Linksys forum about the WRT330N where someone mentioned that the router wasn't renewing its lease.
"I cannot set it run off automatic DHCP from the WRT330N, the router will not assign it an IP every time the lease expires, causing me to have to manually set an IP on the Print server. That's annoying. Having the router drop IP's to individual machines after 12-48 hours...very annoying."
    http://forums.linksys.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=Wireless_Routers&thread .id=67412
If that is the problem, then I would consider setting up a Static IP address for your Apple TV. You can do that through the user interface -> Settings -> Network -> Configure ... (Quite intuitive as you only have change IP address and the subsequent details remain the same.)
My router assigns IP Addresses in the ranges of 192.168.1.100 ->149. The idea here is to choose an address outside of that range but is not greater than 192.168.1.253 (and should not end in the number 1). You shouldn't have to change the linksys router as long as 50 clients are assigned in that range. You'll have to figure that out by accessing your router webpage at browser address 192.168.1.1 -> the default password is "admin" (without the quotes).
    Good luck.

I believe that all audiobooks are supplied to Apple by audible.com, so I assume that it's them requiring the one-time only download.
