Trying to install 10.3 from current 10.2.8 on G3
We have a G3 which was used in school (daughter teaches 5-6 yr-olds). We want to continue using it for the less exotic functions, but working at its best capability.
Mac has 400Mhz Bus 100Mhz, Cache 512, Model says iMac (version =2.2) SDRAM 256 and 64, 2USB,Ethernet and 2 Firewire slots.
Currently running 10.2.8 (It had 9.2.2 before, but I still had my original 10.2 Install disc and that worked fine, and no OS 9 any more)
I then looked for 10.3 Panther, but couldn't find it, so I may have gone straight to 10.4.
So, I tried to install the 10.4, which it didn't like at all, so back to 10.3 as I have a disc with the upgrade 10.3 to 10.3.8 stage.
Can someone confirm that it will run 10.3.9 ? If so, I will need to start (I think) with installing 10.3. I have looked in Apple downloads for basic Panther without success – only lots of security upgrades and similar. Where can I buy the disc ?

Your Mac can run Panther 10.3 or Tiger 10.4. You have limited RAM, so you should increase to at least 512MB. To install either OS, you need a retail installer. The retail installers are black with a silver/white X. You can't use a gray installer for another model Mac. Panther installer is on CDs, while Tiger in on a DVD (so you need a DVD reader disc drive). There is no free download of either OS.
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.

Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.

When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.
Panther - If you do a Google search for M9227LL/A (Panther 10.3 retail install CDs) or M9228LL/A (Family Pack), you may find a set. The CDs should be black with a white X.

The larch installation scripts are written in python, which is much friendlier than bash (which I suppose is used in the standard installation CD), and they are quite easy to find. You should only need to change a line or two in part_mount.py.
But be warned - I think grub does not support reiser4 out of the box, so if you want to use reiser4 for your root partition and grub as boot loader, make a separate ext2 partition for /boot. I don't know whether lilo can boot reiser4, I don't use it. And remember to load the reiser4 kernel module before trying to access the file system, this may not happen automatically.
If you do want to use larch with reiser4, the easiest way to do this is probably to build it with the beyond kernel, and get the module loaded by the initramfs (add it to the line FS_MODULES=... in mklive/initrd/initrd_get_modules). -
I have installed the most recent version of Snow Leopard on my MAC, and I am trying to install Mountain Lion from the Apple Store. It will not install, because it says I do not have 2GB of memory, even though I have over 200GB available. Please help.

One thing is the memory, and another thing is the hard disk space. You are telling me that you have 200 GB of free space on the hard disk, but the App Store is telling you that you have to install 2 GB of memory or more on your Mac if you want to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
First of all, open > About this Mac > More Info, and copy "Model Identifier" here, so we can know what Mac you have got and how much memory you can install.
We recommend to buy the memory in OWC or Crucial (Crucial is cheaper and offers the same compatibility warranty as OWC) because you won't probably have any problem with the memory you buy there -

i have a macbook pro from 2006, my internal cd drive is not working and i'm trying to install factory definitions from an external cd drive. the problem is that when i press c nothing happens only appears an interrogation folder. or sometimes appears the apple logo and than back again to the interrogation folder... Sending by Dropbox where, To who, to what computer? As your does not start up.
You need to take at least the OS disc to a work Mac computer and create DMG from the OS install disc then restore that DMG to USB thumb drive. Then you can boot the computer from that thumb drive and install the OS. That is if your hard drive is functioning correctly.
Then you can use the App disc in the external CD/DVD drive to load up all the included Applications that come with your version of OS X. -

IOS 4.3.2You should only make purchases for all your devices using a single Apple ID. There is no need, and indeed a good reason not to, set up a new Apple ID with each new device purchase. While items purchased under different IDs can be played on a single device, you cannot merge Apple IDs and it makes it cumbersome.
Apple IDs do not expire but may become dormant and require reactivation if they are not actively used.
You should make note of your Apple ID and passwords and keep a record of it. Like a bank account it contains access to items with value. Update your Apple ID email address as they change.

Hello, I've got a Upgrade-Version of CS5.5 for Windows and changed to a Mac. Now I need the Mac-Version. I tried to install the Download from Adobe. Unfortunatly it didn't accept my password. I have a white Macbook 2009 on OSX Lion. It came with the OSX Snow Leopard CD, I erased the HDD and am trying to install the OSX from disc but am getting "cannot install OSX from disc" message. What can I do?
I got the macbook from a friend a few years ago and it already had OSX Lion installed. Whenever it boots from the Snow Leopard disc it says it cannot install from disc. When the installer is done and the computer is back up and running run Software Update to get to 10.6.8

Command: swapoff /dev/sda2
Command: fdisk /dev/sda and changed the system type to 83 (Linux) on /dev/sda2
Now it looks like:

The wiki page says to type: fsck -f /dev/sda2fsck, but I get no such file while trying to open sda2fsck.

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
Can I ignore the above and continue modifying grub?

Last edited by valvet (2010-11-08 14:49:07)fsck -f /dev/sda2fsck makes no sense because /dev/sda2fsck is not a deivce. If the wiki says that, then it is wrong. It's only doing a fsck anyway so probably not really needed. If you are just formatting th swap partition then use, mkfs.ext{234}.
