Trying to install snow leopard on my Macbook Pro.  After already having problems with Grey screen, blinking file with a question mark, etc.  Computer now says that one of the hard drives is failing. The "hitachi" drive says it's failing in disc utility.

o.k.  So, I've been tinkering with several "self help" fixes for several days now with no positive results.  I'll explain my initial problems and then end with my most current situation.  In hopes that someone out there will have a good suggestion or possibly remedy for the issues i'm facing
First, my problem started after my wife played a game on my macbook pro and the computer froze.  She went into a panic and decided to shut down via power button.  When computer restarted she got the blinking file/grey screen and that problem continued for a couple of days before I began using steps from various support topics from apple concerning the grey screen/blinking file folder.
Ultimately, yesterday I decided to erase my Macintosh HD file as one tip suggested.  Following the brief online and on screen (via the process) tips that were there.  Once that was completed I attempted to reinstall snow leopard (my most current version on hand) into the pc.
At first, I thought this would work.  It looked promising.  But, after several hours the installation screen returned with failure.  I attempted to repeat.  And, even repair drives during this try and re-try process.
Now, today, one of the drives..  "hitachi..." states that it's failing and is in red letters with no ability to repair via the disc utility screen.  The Macintosh HD drive shows that it's o.k. But, this drive is listed under the HItachi drive so I think that's where a problem might lay.
So, I guess my question really revolves around.. What if anything can I do to get the hitachi drive back up?  (short of taking it to a repair facility and replacing.)
And, how on earth can i get my OSX back up to I have a laptop again.
Operating on a macbook pro here.  It's my lifeline.  Otherwise, I am using a Windows desktop that i'm not that fond of.  lol
I'm trying to bring this 2006 laptop back to life.  Trying to avoid a rather expensive repair or the purchase of a new laptop.  Also expensive...
Any help would be appreciated.

Well, running on a 2006 model.  I did not have a startup disc.  Initially, it booted up on original software in 2006.  Since then, I've upgraded to 10.6 via a box set.  And, since then I think I popped it up to lion.
All I have on a disc is snow leopard.  And, I can't get farther than the setup screen due to hard drive.  I'm taking to a apple authorized repair store right now.  We'll see what they tell me .  I'm just going to weigh the cost of repair vs. buying new.
Another bad, stupid thing is I had no means of backing up my stuff.  So, I might have lost things like music, vids, etc.  we'll see if they can recover.  If the cost is too much for repair I might just forget it and start over with a new system.  Just not sure at this point.

im trying to instal snow leopard on my macbook. its running tiger 10.4.11 and it meets all the requirements  but it ask me for a restart to begin instalation progres, i restar it and it doesn't happen anything. anyone can help me?

I assume the restart was prompted during the installation process?
First of all, that restart will take several minutes while files are moved into place and should not be interrupted.
If it fails, or you have interrupted the process, you'll need to boot from the installer (hold down the C key on startup) and use Disk Utility to erase the drive prior to continuing the installation.
That will wipe all data on the drive, though, so if you didn't make a backup before beginning the upgrade, you'll need to get your data off safely before proceeding. That may likely require the use of another Mac to access yours in Target Disc Mode.

to boot from your original grey Mac OS X Install DVD, you’ll need to hold down the C key as you start up your MacBook Pro.
Which model MacBook Pro do you have, and which version of Mac OS is noted as being on your grey installation DVD? (It can be found on the lower left of your Mac OS X Install DVD.)

  • Can't erase and install SNow Leopard on old MacBook Pro

I am trying to erase and install Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro3,1. I boot up with the installation disc, get to pick a language but then a window pops up that says "Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer" and gives me the options to Restore from Backup or Restart.
I had upgraded to a 500GB hard drive on this machine which I used for months, but it is currently running off the hard drive of a new MacBook Pro that got fried. The installation disk I am using is the one I got with that unfortunate machine. Could this be the problem?
    Any other suggestions?
    Other info: Mac OS X 10.6.1 (108504)
Other History: The machine I am trying to erase and install on recently had its logic board replaced under warranty because of the NVIDIA graphics card issue. I have not found the service centre in South Africa to be very trustworthy, in fact the first time they claimed to have replaced the logic board, the computer (which had been intermittently failing to boot up) immediately started displaying the same problems. Another mac shop said to me that the "new" logic board looked so dusty that it seemed extremely unlikely that it had been replaced a week prior. Anyway, it has ostensibly been replaced again, along with a faulty superdrive.
When it went back to the service centre, they put in the hard drive of another, new, MacBook Pro of mine that got fried in an unrelated incident
Please help! I want to give this machine to an employee but
    a) want to make sure it's stable and functioning properly, and
    b) want to give it a clean slate with my personal data and settings erased.

You need a retail Snow Leopard installation disk. Available for $29 USD. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MACOS_XSNGL
Once you install it onto the old machine, you can use the setup assistant to migrate your stuff and apps from the other machine.

  • I am unable to install Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro

    Hi
I am unable to update to Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro. I have 2 GB of RAM. When I boot from the install disc I get an error message that this OS cannot be installed on this machine. Sorry, I don't have the error verbatim.
Am I missing something in the system requirements?
Is there another OS I need to install prior to installing SL?
    Thanks
    Andrew

Not impossible, but not likely, either.
I don't know why people keep telling me that what I saw couldn't have happened or is very unlikely. Whatever.
There are not many third party applications that can interfere with this, although maybe there are a few hacks & system 'enhancers' that could.
Little Snitch is not something that most people would call a "hack", and lots of people use it. I meant to quit it, and any other third-party background processes, but forgot. Shortly after I started the Snow Leopard installation, I _saw it block a connection attempt_ by the installer. I allowed the connection, but nonetheless something went wrong. When everything completed and my machine restarted, I still had 10.5.8... absolutely nothing had changed. (I'm not complaining about the "nothing changed" part... I could have ended up with a destroyed system and I didn't.)
I rebooted from the SL disk, repeated the installation and everything went fine.
Moral of the story? Do your system installs in the most controlled environment possible, which means rebooting from the disk.

  • Problem installating Snow Leopard on old Macbook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo. After creating partition on internal hard disk (Extended Journaled), installation starts but stops at half of the progress bar. Screen asking Restart appears.

    Hello:
I have tried installing Snow Leopard via the installation disc on a Macbook Pro (2007) with an Intel Core 2 Duo, but I the installation has failed more than 5 times.
I have first formatted and partitioned the internal hard disk with Mac Os Extended Journal format.
Once the installation starts, it starts without a problem unti lthe progress bar gest until half completed then a screen asking for a Computer Restart shows up.
It asks to press the power button for some time until it the computer shuts down and then, press again to turn it on.
Once turned on, the installation disc gets readed, the installation screen appears again and asks again to start the whole installation process form the beginning.

Then you have a Hardware Problem.
Your system is Crashing part way through the install and Re-Booting because of the crash.
Could be the drive itself or it could be some other hardware part in your system. Like the RAM.
To check if it is the internal drive connect an External drive to the system by USB and do the install on that external. If the install completes then it more then likely the drive is bad. If it crashes again then it is more then likely some other piece of hardware in your system.

  • How do I install Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro currently running Lion?

A friend is having trouble running older apps in Lion on his new Macbook Pro and wants to revert to Snow Leopard. Any suggestions or cautionary tales appreciated. Thanks.

New MBPs require a version of Snow Leopard that you cannot purchase. If it did not come pre-installed on the computer then installing Snow Leopard is a bit of a chore.
First off he will need a computer that can boot from a retail Snow Leopard DVD (10.6.3.) Second off he will need a 16 GB USB flash drive or a free partition on a USB hard drive that is at least 16 GBs in size. The basic process is:
Using a computer that can boot from a retail Snow Leopard DVD you install 10.6.3 onto the spare drive. Download and install the 10.6.8 Combo update. Create a new partition on the MBP. Boot the MBP from the 10.6.8 USB drive then clone the system to the new partition on the MBP.
I will be glad to provide more detail if needed.

  • DON'T Install Snow Leopard on early MacBook Pro with Firmware password on!!

I'm going to summarize my postings from yesterday because I don't want anyone wasting their night like I did.
Many of us who upgraded from Tiger created a Firmware password to ensure that people won't be able to wipe and re-install the HD for sale if the computer gets stolen. I also note that, like me, many have been suffering the recent won't wake from sleep issues that make it feel like the HD is dead. Sometimes it starts from sleep, mostly it's a real hassle to get it to wake up and when it does it's generally in safe sleep mode. I managed to find a "halfway" good fix for that issue by changing the sleep mode from 0 to 3 in the terminal, found a useful script by Googling the problem. Fixes 90% of my issues on that score. But I wanted to install Snow Leopard to "hopefully" fix that issue for good.
HOWEVER, if you have a MacBook Pro 2006-2007 model and the original install disc is still Tiger, WARNING TURN OFF THE FIRMWARE PASSWORD if you created one before you attempt an install. Otherwise you'll be completely stuck in black screen **** and you cannot restart from the Snow Leopard disc once you have it in, neither can you eject it because you never get that far.
The computer, after installing Snow Leopard just gets stuck on the grey screen for a while and then goes black. The computer will not boot from the Snow Leopard disc, Techtool Protege or Leopard disc and the BIGGEST PROBLEM is; you can't Zap the PRAM with firmware active to try and continue installation as some other posters have suggested. Basically, you're screwed.
To get the Snow Leopard disc out I rebooted in Windows and ejected the disc, then put in first the Leopard disc... didn't work... then rebooted, ejected and put in the original installation disc with Tiger, that did work but no firmware password reset!!!
The only solution was for me to wipe the disc, reinstall Tiger from the original install disc, which was the only one that worked. Once I could restart the computer again in Tiger, I was finally able to reboot from the Leopard disc and disable the firmware password.
Then I restarted, zapped the PRAM and using the Leopard disc, restored my machine to its former self with my Time Machine back up. Ran Techtool Pro 5 to fix permissions and rebuild volumes etc. and now have it working again.
I think I'll leave Snow Leopard for a while since I don't know whether the zapping PRAM works during install and frankly, don't have the time to go through this entire debilitating process again. If anyone does manage to get things running on the earlier MacBook Pros please let me know how it went!
Anyway, just thought I'd give people a heads up on the Firmware password thing... it's really a bugger on the older models because it wasn't originally included on the original install disc leaving you with no options!!

Sorry, just wnated to post a comment not question, wasn't sure how to mark it!

  • Macbook pro starts up but i see picture of some files and a question mark

So I was on my laptop today and it just outta nowhere froze , the song i was listening stopped and i couldn't change the page, i could move the trackpad but nothing else.
so i clicked on the off button and turned it off.
then i tried to turn it on again but while loading it just stayed blank and this picture of some files and a question mark on them appeared, i have no idea what's going on.
I turned it off again and turned it back on and the little apple appeared and it was loading but then a sign appeared like one of prohibited (the one that's a circle and has a slash across it) and idk what to do! i'm so frustrated all my school files are there and idk why this happened in the first place.
i turned it off and just put it to charge.
lately i've been using it a lot and i had a few things on when it froze , so im just gonna leave it off for a while but what can i do?
how do u solve this? has anyone had this happened to their macbook pro already? i bought it just last year idk why this is happening.

The folder and question mark means it cannot find a valid OSX Boot Volume, you need to Boot from your original install DVD (hold c at start) and then run Disc Utility from the top menu bar and run both 'Repair Disc' and 'Repair Permissions'. If it still doesn't boot from the internal hard drive then you need to boot from that install DVD again and do an archive (re)install of the operating system. (Your User data will be saved that way)

  • Is it possible to install snow leopard on a Macbook Pro 13" i5 2.5 Ghz model?

Snow Leopard won't run on the new MacBook Pros. It's Lion or Mountain Lion - nothing else.
Clinton, that's not true. It will run, as I've provided. The biggest problem is finding a copy of SL server...no longer sold by Apple.

  • Can I install Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro 2.0GHz quad-core Intel i7?

I need to reformat my MacBook Pro 2.0GHz quad-core Intel i7 with OS X Lion with Snow Leopard in order to install Final Cut Pro Studio 2. Does anyone know if this can be done? Thanks in advance!!!

    Hi z,
Contact Apple and ask them for the install disc that would have shipped with your machine if Lion had not been released. Others have been successful in obtaining the disc and installing SL.

  • How can I install snow leopard on 2010 MacBook Pro that has no os?

I purchased a 2010 MacBook Pro on eBay and it was delivered with no operating system. It has disk utility recovery, but the choices listed don't apply. I don't have an time machine backup, nor can I restore Mavericks.  I bought a copy of Snow Leopard to install, but can't figure out how to do it.  Hoping someone out there has some suggestions.

In his usual diplomatic, understated way, Ogelthorpe has told you the truth.
    MacBook Pro
    Date introduced
    Original Mac OS X included
    (see Tips 1 and 3)
    Later Mac OS X included
    (see Tip 1)
    Mac OS X Build(s)
    (see Tip 2)
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)
    Apr 2010
    10.6.3
    10.6.4
    10D2063a, 10D2094, 10D2101a, 10F2108
The version on the "Full Retail" 10.6.3 DVD is likely to be build 10D575, which is too early to Install and run on that MacBook, which shipped with one of the custom versions listed in the box above.

  • Re-installing Snow Leopard - early 2011 Macbook Pro

I recently sold my early 2011 15" MBP, and before sending it away wanted to clean off the harddrive. I followed the instructions for erasing it, but it has now failed 5 times to reinstall Snow Leopard from the disc. It gets about 3/4 of the way through the installation and then I receive an error message "Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

There is a menu bar on the second screen when you run the installer.
Click Utilities in the Menu bar and select Disk Utility. Use DU to erase the hard drive and format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
When that is done, quit DU and continue the installation.

  • Trying to install downloaded Leopard on my macbook pro intel core duo

I purchased Leopard from a third party site in which it was downloaded. I'm wondering if I can install it on my Macbook Pro? Everytime I open it is says to restart in order to install but it takes me back to my desktop everytime. The only reason I'm upgrading is because I purchased some photoshop extras and in order to utilize them I need 10.5 or 10.6. I don't want to upgrade to 10.6 and I'm not quite sure if I can.

To elaborate on William's point above about the software likely being pirated: Apple never, ever sells "downloadable" versions of its software. (Updates are provided via download, but full releases are available on DVD media only.) No reseller should be offering such a download for sale.
Plus, you cannot install a Mac OS onto a hard disk that is the boot drive for that computer. So if you downloaded a version of OS 10.5 onto your Tiger (10.4) computer, you could not run the installer. A running system can't upgrade itself. That's why you must have the software on DVD and boot from that DVD. (There are other ways--sharing DVDs across a wireless network or booting from an external drive.)
For now, call Apple sales (1 800 MY APPLE in the US) and purchase a legal, on-DVD copy of OS 10.5--they are still making and selling them.

  • Re-install snow leopard os on macbook pro?

Purchased my MBP August 2009 with Leopard installed.  Since then, I upgraded to Snow Leopard and have been very happy with it.  In recent months, I have noticed the following behaviors:
    1) MBP is slow to launch (including the Finder) after "sleep"
    2) Safari seems sluggish.  I also use Firefox & Opera browsers.  Sometimes Opera needs to force quit.
    3) At times the internal HD fan would spin noisely and gets hot - usually when watching video or surfing on certain websites
    4) Quite often my MS Excel 2004 would freeze and had to force quit
    5) Battery seems to hold less charges than before (though Genius bar said it is still ok)
As a habit, I usually clear my cache after each session.  My 250 GB harddisk is only 50% full and I time machine to backup onto external HD.
Late week, I decided to visit the Genius bar and they ran some diagnostic tests including running the "Repair Disk Permissions."  All the tests seemed to pass with no indication of any issues.  Now that a few days have passed and I m debating whether or not to wipe out the HD, re-install OS & start afresh.  Given that my extension Apple Care protection is still valid until Aug.17, 2012 should I mess up anything.
Appreciate your expertise on the pros & cons on re-install.
