Trying to reformat and reinstall Mac OS X
Hi,
We purchased a MacBook on eBay for my son. My husband turned it on and set it up as an administrator, but then we decided to not go that route and wanted to wipe it clean for my son to begin with it fresh. We have booted from the install discs several times, following the instruction, (we have been able to do it successfully for two other children and used MacBooks) and each time, instead of getting the welcome "pick your language" screen, it displays by husband's user name and asks for his password.
Any suggestions?
First I'd backup your whole Mail folder.
Try dragging this file to the Desktop first, then logout/in...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
If that doesn't work try the .plists in...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/
In your home folder, try trashing this folder after quitting Mail...
/Library/Caches/Mail

Move Envelope Index to the Desktop in...
/Library/Mail
Insert Disk numer#1, hold c key immediately on power up, choose custom install, uncheck all APPs, Languges, Fonts, Printer Drivers you don't need... it shouldn't need Dsk #2, then call Apple & get a replacement Disk #2... common problem.

MAJOR HD PROBLEMS..disc cant be deactivated, trying to reformat and reinstall osx
As the title mentions, I cant seem to partition my HD in order to properly reformat and then reinstall osx..
I basically want a fresh new factory macbook with the original lion osx (dec 2011 macbook)..
Reasons why its not working out:
Macbook when turned on goes automatically in the options menu with reinstall os, DU, seek help online and set back a time machine backup (dont have)..
Already erased my hitachi 500 gb HD and the Macintosh HD partition a couple of times (on fastest way setting, and once in the 3 times overwrite setting which took 4 hours, not tried the safest 7 times overwrite way..)
Did a control disk with DU sometimes its fine and sometimes an error pops up saying it cant be fixed.
After trying to reinstall an os mavericks in this case, after 4 hours or 3andahalf it restarts itself in the same options menu (DU, reinstall, seek online help, time machine)..
Partitioning again wont work because the disk cant be deactivated. .
What to do guys? ?In order to repartition the drive, you can't be using it as any kind of boot drive. That includes Recovery Mode since that is a hidden partition on the drive. So the OS won't let you remove the drive its currently started up to out from under yourself.
Restart in Internet Recovery Mode by holding down Command+Option+R so the Mac is running from the firmware. You'll get what looks like the same work screen as the regular Recovery Mode, but you'll be able to repartition and completely wipe the drive. Then install OS X. The version of OS X the Mac shipped with will be installed.
Do not upgrade it to any version of OS X past that, or the new owner will not be able to reinstall any upgrade since it would require your App Store ID and password to do so.

For future reference, unless you're trying to protect classified government documents, or other highly sensitive data, there's no reason to do any more than a one pass erase. It takes expensive, specialized hardware and software to have even a slight chance of recovering data that has been written over even just once. There's no software consumers can buy that will recover anything from such a drive. -
Trying to reformat and reinstall windows but get black screen with cursor
Im trying to reformat my computer after a blue screen error and when i pop in my disk to reformat and install it goes through the first stuff...opening files then it says starting windows and then black screen with cursor..nothing else..i can move the

Is there any error code or error message displayed in the installation process ? because just based on your description in the post, it is difficult to find the root cause for a black screen even after a clean install, this might be caused by a corrupt installation
media or a hardware issue, so, I give two potential suggestion:
1.Try another Windows installation media and perform a clean install again to see the result.
2.Go to the computer vendor for hardware support, this also can be caused by a memory or hard disk issue.

i have read up on all about crashes and i cant even open it in safe mode :( i have tried deleting it and reinstalling it but the problem still persists. What would you suggest i do and is there any way i canget hold of firefox 6 for mac?

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

I moved my service data and file shares to an external hard drive. When I format my startup hard drive, reinstall the operating system and server, what do I have to do to connect to the service data on my external hard drive? I imagine that I have to establish user accounts with the same credentials.
Really, what I am after is that I'm trying to get Profile Manager to work right with my iOS devices. And I have a wide variety of them (about 12 of them). None of them work. They get a profile installation failure. The research I've done seems to point to just reformat and reinstall. But in doing so, I don't want to lose the service data. Any help you can provide, please...I need reassurance that when I reinstall everything, I'll be able to have access to the data store again.

Based on your succes of getting profile manager to work until now, I wouldn't recommend reconnecting any services to old data.
Export any data per service like calendar through a calendar client.app and my advice would be: Start over.
First of all, get a fixed IP adress, a FQDN available from the internet and DNS up and running and get it right. Check and recheck with the right tools in the server.app (top left corner, select your server and go to "overview") and from the terminal:
host your-ip-address
host your-domain-name
sudo changeip -checkhostname
When you have everything up and running, then continue with a validated external certificate or create a self signed certificate and start profilemanager.

Having problems erasing and reinstalling Mac os x on 2007 MBP 15in

I am having some problems here and was hoping for some help.
Just recently here, I decided to erase and reinstall Mac Os X on my sister's 2007 MBP. She just recently got a new 15in MBP and wanted most of her content on the 2007 to be erased. Well... I did some reading around and found that the easiest way to do so was with the os X DVD that came with the thing. Problem is....I can't seem to find it for the 2007 MBP. So I decided to try the 2010 version. Went into the disk, ran disk utility, wiping the hard drive, did all the right steps according to Apple, and then rebooted to try get a clean version of OS X on. Well, problem is, it would come to the language select screen, but after that selection, it would come up with this error:
"Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer
If you want to restore your system from a Time Machine backup, click "Restore from Backup"
I've tried reformatting the HD several times and even tried restoring, but it wouldn't display my system restores...
So my quesiton is, is it becuase I have the wrong DVD that its not working or is there something else I"m missing?
Any help would be vastly appreacited (especially since its not my computer!)

Jordon SpronkThe install disks that come with a model of a Mac have certain hardware drivers for the computer and video card, you can't use another Mac's install disk.
However you can use the $29 Snow Leopard install disk, but it doesn't come with iLife, that's extra. -
when I try to drag icons accross the screen thet are sticking for up to 10 seconds. I have just done a recovery (reformatted and reinstalled the OSX 10.8.5 but no change. The activity monitor shows nothing out of the ordinary. I have a MacBook Pro 2012. I am having perfomance isues with ProTools and I'm wondering if the 2 are connected. I installes TechTools 7 and ran tests on everything and it says all is good. Any idea's? Thanks!
JimIf you haven't already done so, eject the card by dragging its icon to the Eject icon in the Dock (where the Trash icon usually is.) Make sure the write-lock switch on the card is in the unlocked position. Then reinsert the card and test.
If there's no change, and the same happens with more than one card, the card reader is stuck in write-locked mode. I don't generally advise do-it-yourself hardware repair, but one ASC member managed to fix this problem. I haven't tried the fix myself and I can't offer any guidance beyond what's in that discussion. If you cause damage, don't expect your warranty to cover it. I suggest you instead make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store. -
Brand new imac 27" keeps crashing. I'm running 10.9.2 with all software up to date. It will crash on file tranfers to/from/between external drives, web browsing, word processing, video editing, and even while idling. It used to crash every 15 minutes when I first got it but I reformatted and reinstalled all software. Now it it still crashing albeit less often. This is extremely frustrating because I have no idea what I can do to prevent it from happening!

Reformatting and reinstalling tiger
My computer shipped with OS 10.3. I later upgraded to Tiger. For reasons too lengthy to explain I have to reformat and reinstall. Do I reinstall OS 10.3 and then 10.4 or can I begin with 10.4? What about original apps?
There's no need to reinstall Mac OS X 10.3 if you want to end up with 10.4 on your Mac. If you reformat your disk drive, you will also need to reinstall your apps after you reinstall Mac OS X 10.4, but I suggest that before you reinstall your apps, you do all the OS updates first, to get to 10.4.8.
Before you install each update, I suggest you run the repair disk permissions, then do it again after the update.
Of course, be sure to back up your files before you reformat your hard drive. -
How to uninstall and reinstall mac os x...corrupt files...help!
i recently got a macbook pro to use for my photography and music and such, but i have never had a mac before and i'm used to pcs. i think a virus may have gotten on my computer because a couple days ago i went to upload a cd into itunes and i noticed that none of the songs i uploaded played. they showed up in the player but didn't actually play. so i restarted itunes and it said that my library was corrupt and that it had created a new one. the same thing happened in aperture. i exported some pictures from aperture to a file on my computer, and the pictures were there but half of them wouldn't display. so i restarted my computer, and aperture said it had to recover my folders, but it only recovered the folders that came with aperture...all of my library folders were gone. so i tried to import files from my computer into the aperture library and aperture just closed. this is actually the only way aperture will close--once it is open i have to force quit or just try to import files. since i have never worked with macs before the only way i can see to solve this problem is to burn all of my music and pictures to rewritable dvds (because those are the only files i really need) and then uninstall and reinstall mac os x. but i don't really know how to do this. any suggestions?

trying to uninstall and reinstall creative cloud bc of problems. encountering Error Code: 86 - "Another version of Creative Cloud desktop is currently running. To continue, pls quit that instance and click retry." No other CC exists on my computer anymore. Advice?
If you are on MAC Open Activity Monitor and check for Creative Cloud, it it Running Quit it

I have a new machine with a previous installation of Itunes, linked to another Apple ID. Even I authorized the machine to my Apple ID, I can not connect to the Apple Store. I tried removing Itunes and reinstalling it, but anything changed. I still can not connecto to the Store.
My previous machine has Itunes Installed, and I deauthorized the machine so I unlinked to my Apple ID, if this is correct.
Anyway, Dropbox is also not connecting....so I do not know how to make it woek. please help!I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account. I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there. On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back. Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email. The device is currently useless.
The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option? -
I tried to install iTunes 10.6.1 for Windows (64 bit) and it says "A required iTunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall iTunes. (-42404). I have tried uninstalling everything and reinstalling and it still does not work. I then restored my computer to a week ago and tried to download and install the update and this came up again.
