Trying to switch start up disks but the external drive isn't visible

I just got a MBP C2D and trying to boot off the clone of my old system....the external drive which holds the clone is not visible on the list of start up disks.
my old system was a PPC PB.
is this fixable?
regards,
Eric

Hello,
Unfortunately this is not possible. The code needed to boot an Intel Mac and PPC Mac are completely different. You can try to do an archive and install over the drive but I can't promise that will work. Good Luck.

  • Don't see the external drive

So I just installed Tiger. I still have OS 9 with Classic.
Two problems but I will separate them and post only one here.
    1) I have an external drive, OWC Neptune firewire 300 GB with 20 folders or so. But now, after installing Tiger, when I click on the external drive (the icon is visible in OS X but not in Classic) I see only the Hard Disk Speed Tools (1 folder with 7 files that are technical). I don't see any of my folders and files I saved-- about 1 GB more or less)
Please tell me it's not gone !
Why is it that the external drive icon is visible in OS X but not in Classic ?
Also I tried to see how much GB I have on the external drive but it doesn't give me any indication. When I click ->Get info it shows size : 3.2 MB

Hi eew, Thank you for your answer.
When Classic is running, OS X is controlling the computer, and your access to external drives is the same as when Classic is turned off. Are you confusing Classic operation in OS X with booting the computer into OS 9 (OS X is not running at all)? The difference may seem to be purely a matter of semantics, but it isn't.
    1) No, when I turn on my computer it runs on OS X but Classic is also available (I turned the option to turn on both) but what appears on the screen is OS X.
    2) > Are you confusing Classic operation in OS X with booting the computer into OS 9 (OS X is not running at all)?
I think I must put an OS 9 disk to boot into OS 9 don't I ? (I mean now that I have Tiger) The OS 9.0.4 disc is sitting comfy in a disc holder.
OS X is always present. When I shot down/wake up it is OS X. Then I see a file (I guess you can call it that) with the title "Classic starting up using "system folder" on "MacIntosh HD" and see the bar in progress. but nothing else. Then the Classic logo (the 9 in a square) is on the top bar. But the desktop doesn't show anything. If I click on the Classic logo and - -> "Start Classic" then, and only then do I see the familiar (and lovable) OS 9.2.2 on the blue background with the 2 faces loading.
    3) >When you start your computer up in OS 9, you aren't using Classic you're running OS 9.
Hum, same as above, this is IF I put a OS 9 disc.
I installed OS X so I don't have OS 9 anymore to start. It start on Tiger with OS Classic also available.
So it is not completely true when they say in the installation option "Tiger will load (in single partition) on top of OS 9" since in fact it uses something new which is Classic. So I install OS X therefore OS 9 is not used anymore. And OS X contains a folder with this idea of a OS 9 substitute called Classic. It is not OS 9 and it is not OS X it's something in between.
    4) >Under those circumstances, you won't be able to see any unpartitioned 300GB hard drive, internal or external, even if OS 9 drivers are installed.
Huh ? I installed the external drive when I still had OS 9.0.4 using the firewire connection.
The external drive came with a disc. The installation/set up said :
"Mac OS X : -Drivers not required. Proceed to hardware installation.
    Mac OS 8.6-9.2.2- Firewire :
Insert the HDST CD (they mean by that the Hard Drive Speed Tools) and follow the instructions provided by the installer. You may need to install Apple's Firewire drivers, see the tech center for details"
I put the disc, followed the instructions and it says installation succesfull.
I did not install or open any other files /folders present on the external drive.
I saw the external drive logo on my desktop, I copied 20 files or so in it. I opened them to check if everything is OK before I trash the original so I don't understand you saying I won't be able to see any unpartitioned 300GB hard drive.
I didn't partition the external drive. I just installed it, open it and start copy files on it.
    5) As for the
"You may need to install Apple's Firewire drivers, see the tech center for details"
I didn't see any warning about that and as I said, I started using the exter. drive. "You may need" and You must" are 2 different things. I assumed everything is OK since I used the external drive without problem. Wrong assumption ?
Days later I upgraded incremently to 9.2.2. (first 9.1 then 9.2 etc) and I still used the external drive to copy files hours before installing Tiger (to make room for Tiger).
    Now I have Tiger.
And they said Mac OS X : -Drivers not required.
Beside I see it on OS X so that's not a problem
Actually I just tried right now to see if the external drive works by dragging a file on it and nothing happened. With OS 9.0.4 it immediately started to copy and I could see a bar showing me the progress.
I open the Drive and see that the Hard Disc Tool files folder (which has 7 files) has at least 3 files that has a connection with Classic: One is called "Integrity Classic" the other "Quick bench Classic" and another "Disk Defrag Classic HDST" Not sure if it has any connection with OS 9 Classic ? I guess yes because
When I click to see what it is I get a message
"Sorry, this program is not compatible with OS X or OS X Classic mode. Please reboot your computer into Mac OS 9 to run this software."
    6) Will that solve the problem ? But if I reboot using OS 9 (the disk) wouldn't that jeopardize Tiger ? And a need to re-instal Tiger ? Maybe it won't erase it (or will it ?) but I will have to work (erggh!) on re-doing stuff ? That is why I want to install OS 9 on the external drive.
    7) I'm thinking of installing OS 904 (from the disk that came with the computer 5 years ago) on the external drive (and then I will upgrade to 9.2.2 ) so I will have the real OS 9, the one I like, the one I'm used to (Not the pale Classic) and which I prefer to Tiger.
Is that a good idea ?
I will have Tiger on my internal HD and I will have OS on the external. Then I can forget about Classic which is confusing ; It is not OS 9 and it is not OS X it's something in between. (I will not bother to erase Classic or reinstall OS X alone or anything like that it's there, it will stay there but I will not use it.)
Although I will use Tiger 90% of the time.
I feel guilty for being so long.
    But reading is good

  • New Mac Mini Server, two Hard drives, Can I install an older Mac OS on the second drive and switch start up disks to run PowerPc applications?

New Mac Mini Server, has two Hard drives, could I install an older Mac OS on the second drive and switch start up disks to run PowerPc applications?

I haven't purchased a Mac Mini at this time and I may not if I can't use it as a non server. I need to update my system I would be better off buying a new Mac with Snow Leopard the last app that will run Rosetta. The Mac Mini Server has a quad 2.0 processor and 4 GB RAM and two internal hard drives and should out perform my dual 1.25 G4. I can run PPC apps on my G4 but it is 8+ years old and seems to be getting noisy. I don't want to tie myself to another old machine. I want a machine that will work with Intel Apps I was hoping that the two hard drives would allow me to boot from the second with Snow Leopard and use Lion on the first drive to be able to keep up to date with all my other universal apps and Mac OS up grades. The application I use the most is my CanvasX app with drawing & vector effects, text & typography, sprite technology, painting, image editing, and multimedia tools are all in this one app but will not be updated to run Intel apps. I am frozen in time because my most valuable Application won't be updated and Apple has cut me off by not supporting PPC in Lion and onward; Apple used to backward support but I guess that they are no longer as user friendly and concerned with a happy user. I have always been a loyal Mac user and I will not migrate to Windows under any circumstance; I hate windows!
    Thanks for your prompt response,

  • I have an imac 2009 the disk drive is damaged and I have lost the passwords I need to reset passwords I tried booting with a macosx disk from an external hard drive but did not read the drive how else can I reset password ?

I have an imac 2009 the disk drive is damaged and I have lost the passwords I need to reset passwords I tried booting with a macosx disk from an external hard drive but did not read the drive how else can I reset password ?
I have a 2012 mac book pro can I use that to connect with firewire and load osx that way? and how woudl I do that?
    Thanks so much!

To what password are you referring? Do you mean your user account's admin password? Or do you mean the master password for File Vault or do you mean a Firmware Password?
    For an admin password:
    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you cannot do the above then try this:
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command until
you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message,
then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
How to reset the OS X password without a startup CD:
Reboot into Single-user Mode. Enter the following and press RETURN after each command line
       1. Type fsck -fy
       2. Type mount -uw /
       3. Type passwd <username>
I have never tried this method myself.

My granddaughter put the Start Up Disk in the drive inadvertently and now the drive will not eject it or start up using the HD.  I have tried all of the suggestions for opening it that appear in the manual.  Help?  It is her computer, a iMac G3 or G4 with superdrive, the one with the ball shaped base.   Thank you.

It's a tray loading drive, there should be a little hole next to it, just large enough for a paper clip.  Stick the end of the paper clip in it and the tray should open.

  • I am trying to boot Ubuntu 12.4 on my iBook G4, but am having trouble getting my iBook to recognize the boot disk in the CD Drive.  Why?

I am trying to boot Ubuntu 12.4 on my iBook G4, but am having trouble getting my iBook to recognize the boot disk in the CD Drive.
I have pressed "C" during boot to force it to boot from the Optical Drive.  It boots normally.
I have pressed "option" to get the boot menu.  The only option available is my hard disk drive.
I have pressed "option""command""shift""delete" at the same time during boot to force it to skip booting the hard disk.  I get a blinking smily face/question mark for a while, then it shows the boot menu, at which point the only available option is my hard disk drive.
In system preferences in OS X I have looked to change the boot drive, but the only option, again, is the hard disk.
Can I not boot from the Optical Drive?
    Why?

    Hello,
From the link I provided it says:
Nearly all open-source software is available to download from the Ubuntu repositories, but the amount of proprietary software available for PowerPC linux is limited. You will have the same version of Firefox, LibreOffice, etc as other architectures.
Notable absentees are: Chrome/Chromium, Adobe Flash (although open-source alternatives are available, see below), Wine (however Qemu can be used, see below), ndiswrapper, proprietary video drivers and Dropbox (but, you can use Ubuntu One).
I do recall it being very limited when it came do downloading Linux software that supported PPC.
You wouldn't be any better off than using firefox or safari on Mac OS X 10.4.11.
If your looking for a faster and more compatible web browser then I would suggest the following, which I've recently found very useful on Mac OS X 10.4

    Hope this helps.

  • I have a G5 with Tiger to sell and want to erase all my data from it, but the cd drive won't work so I can't use the OS10 start up disk. Answers?

I have a G5 to sell and want to erase all my data from it, but the cd drive won't work so I can't use the OS10 start up disk. Any way to do it?

Do you have another Mac? If so, you can startup this one in "Target Disk Mode" (instructions here) and connect it to another Mac to delete the home folders (or the entire drive, if that's what you want).
One piece of advise, though: after deleting the data, and of course emptying the Trash, it wouldn't hurt to also securely erase the "free space" of the drive (instructions here) before disconnecting the old Mac from the new one. This can be helpful, since "deleted" data is often retrievable with ease unles it's written over after the deletion.

There is nothing wrong with the OS update.
    Delete ALL your email accounts.
    Restart Playbook
Put the accounts back and ensure they are all set with PUSH ON.  Manual (push off) will burn battery.
Similarly delete your wifi connections and add back when required.
Turn off wifi is not connected to wifi.
Any "hunting for connection" in email or wifi will burn up battery.

  • My late 2006 iMac stopped finding my back up drive.  I've tried rebooting but no good.  Tried unplugging the external drive and rebooting.  How do I tell my computer to find the external 500 GB dive that is plugged into it?

I have a Western Digital 500 gig external hardrive that I have been using successfully with Time Machine to back up my files.  A few weeks ago I noticed that the external drive light was ON but not moving back and forth indicating that it was working.  The light was now simply ON but not moving.  So I checked and sure enough Time Machine didn''t "see" it anymore.  When I tried to fix it, the drive is no longer on the list.  Nothing is on the list.  The external drive is not showing anywhere, including the desktop.  And when I tried to switch Time Machine on the list is empty and it wants to "look" at airport for a wi-fi type peripheral.  Help!  How do I get the iMac to realize it has an external drive plugged into it?  I don't even know why it worked when I first got it or why it stopped working.  I only know that Time Machine doesn't have it listed.

Open disk utility and check the external drive and repair it.  If that didn't fix the problem or if you are unable to see the drive in disk utility then the drive could be bad.

  • I want to reinstall mail.app from the disk but the version is old on the disk, i'm using 10.6.8

    Hi,
I deleted the mail.app in the bid to save space but i want to re-install. I have inserted the install disk and tried to do it that way but the version is too old.
in the box i was told to install the combo update which one do i install and will it work. Is there something else i can do

If you've already restored the older version of Mail, then run the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 update.
Note that the version of Mail you restored should be from a Snow Leopard Installer Disc.

The problem with accessing the content of the disks is the CD Drive does not seem to access them. It also has a heck of a time ejecting them. Other disks seem to read. The unit came with imovie disks and I can use them. The disks look perfectly good no scratches but they just don't work, I was hoping I could just get a online copy of the address book to replace the one that seems to be missing. Or find it somewhere on my drive. Have no clue where to look though.

I run Windows 7. I installed Adobe CS4, and when I tried to open Firefox after, got a popup window with a list of errors. I don't remember what they were specifically, but I believe they related to the Adobe flash plug-in. I restarted the computer, and subsequently got even less: the icon in the taskbar exanded, associated sound from the webpages I had tabbed started to play, but the window itself did not appear, not even in the preview. However, it closed normally when I clicked the red X in the preview window or when I right-clicked the icon and selected Close Window

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the Music and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad above the volume switch, or via control centre : swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen and it's the right-most of the 5 icons in the middle of it (if the icon is white then it's 'on', tap it to turn it grey and 'off'). The function that isn't on the side switch is set via control centre instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085
