Trying to upgrade from OS9.1 to OS10.0 on B+W G#-greyed out disc

I'm trying to get OS10 to install on a Blue and White G3 but the disc (a cd) won't recognize.
Trying to restart from the disc drive generates a disc error2 message.
Holding down the c key on reboot doens't work.
Accessing from start-up menu and the disc is recognized but is greyed out...
tried to target the machine and that didn't work either.
There's 256mb of ram in there.
4+GB of space on the drive.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Drew

Is this your problem?
106235- Mac OS X: Disk Appears Dimmed (or "Grayed Out") in the Installer
Have you upgraded the firmware? You must do that before you attempt to run Mac OS X.
Have you tried inserting the CD and clicking on the "Install Mac OS X" Icon?
The Blue & White G3 cannot offer its disk to others over FireWire, and cannot boot from an external FireWire drive.
G5 CDs will only install on a G5.

    Hello Abe,
If it's a Digital Audio or earlier, you need to install a Firmware update first...
As explained in "Mac OS X 10.2 Welcome and Install Manuals" and "Mac OS X Welcome and Install Manuals", you may need to update the firmware on your Macintosh computer prior to installing Mac OS X 10.2 or later. The following table lists the firmware updates that are available for Apple products that can update to Mac OS X 10.2 or later.

  • Error trying to go from OS9 to OS10 - /etc/ not a directory

i have both OS10.4 and OS 9.2.2 installed on my mac g4.
i have programs in both i use often, so i need to switch back and forth.
when i try to startup in OSX from OS9, i get the screen with the apple and little twirly thing at the bottom,
and then i get a black screen with the error message:
    /etc/master.passwd : not a directory
    /etc/profile : not a directory
and nothing works. i can't finish starting up.
when i type in list commands at the -sh-2.05b# prompt,
i can find and get into the etc directory, though,
but i can't get anything to happen.
i have to restart in OS9,and then re-install OSX.
when i reinstall OSX, i can restart between OS9 and OSX once or twice, and then eventually i will get that error message and have to reinstall OSX again.
i looked on my hard drive, in OS9, and on the OSX installation disc, and the /etc/ directories do exist, and they both have a file called master.passwd,
and the OS9 /etc/ directory has a file called profile.
so i don't understand what it is looking for and why it can't find it; or why sometimes i can startup and sometimes i can't.
    please help!
    thank you very much
    g4   Mac OS X (10.4)   OS 9.2.2

As I recall, and the KB article rather delicately leaves out, one of the things that Norton Disk Doctor Kevorkian does is mess up those symbolic links. So if you are running it periodically while you are in OS 9, that is the source of the problem.

  • Trying to update from OS 10.1__hard drive selection in Installer greyed out

Was recently given an iMac with a faulty HD. Was able to install a new HD and OS 10.1, but have been unable to update further, because the Installer has greyed out the HD choice in the final step of installation. I am at a loss here. Also the HD is showing as only having about 130 GB available on a 250 GB drive. I doubt the problems are directly related, but maybe one of you would know. I've been stuck at this spot for a couple of days now.

    Welcome To  Discussions D'Ville!
Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, and 10.5, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
Once an OS has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), 10.4.x to 10.4.11 (Pending), and 10.5.x to 10.5.1 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Jaguar and Panther, are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Leopard 10.5.x, is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, Jaguar Full Retail CDs, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, AllMac, etc.
This is the correct one Mac OS X 10.4.6 Tiger, (DVD) Retail, selling for $159.95, at FastMac.
And at HardCore Mac, selling for $199.99.
Notice that both, are more expensive, than, the The Apple Store (U.S.), selling for $129.00.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.
Tiger and Leopard are on DVD.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

Before upgrading to any OS X version, check to see if your Mac needs a Firmware Update.
If one is required, you must start the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk, not from a CD, in order to install it.
Here is the Firmware Update for that iMac model.
Once Jaguar 10.2.x is installed, you can use the 10.2.8 Combo Update,
or if Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version of either OS.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.11 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
    Jaguar System Requirements
-Power Mac G3 or G4, iMac, eMac, PowerBook G3 or G4, or iBook computer
    -128MB of physical RAM
-Supports all video cards shipped by Apple on Mac OS X-compatible systems. Quartz Extreme functionality is supported by the following video cards: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX, GeForce3, GeForce4 MX, or GeForce4 Ti; Any AGP-based ATI RADEON card. A minimum of 16MB VRAM is required.
-QuickTime Pro functionality requires a QuickTime 6 Pro key. The QuickTime 5 Pro key will not work after this software is installed.
-DVD Player requires a DVD-ROM equipped Macintosh with built-in FireWire.
Review these KB Articles, for the Panther System Requirements, and the Additional Panther System Requirements.
The posted RAM System Requirement, for all versions of OS X, is the bare minimum.
For optimum performance, more is recommended.
Additionally, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, so if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.
Info here Installing Tiger Using Firewire Target Disk Mode.
And here Installing Tiger Without A DVD Drive.
The Tiger Media Exchange Program, referred to, is no longer available.
There is also a version available on CDs, at FastMac, for $179.99.

  • Trying to upgrade software for my iphone 4 and it is greyed out

i have an iphone 4 and have not been able to upgrade my software to either version 6 or 7.  I am still runing version 5.  When i go to sofware update to upgrade my software, my "download and install" is greyed out and does not allow me to update.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

The instructions are in that link. Just follow them VERY CAREFULLY. Especially the part about:
Turn off your device and leave it off.
Plug in your device's USB cable to a computer with iTunes. [but DON'T connect it to the iPhone yet]
Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
When you see the iTunes screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try steps 1 through 3 again.
When your device is connected, iTunes will open. You'll see a message saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in recovery mode.
Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.

For some reason the installation didn't work.
It jst sat there stuck for a long time.
How did you obtain the 10.4.8 update? Were you running the Installer application & if so where in the process was it stuck?
I finally cancelled the installation and restarted.
How did you do that? Did you get any warning when you cancelled the installation?
    Though now Mail doesn't work.
    any idea what's going on?
Most likely, you had some underlying file system or permissions problem that interfered with the installation & canceling it left the OS in an unknown state.
I suggest you first try running Disk Utility's First Aid repairs on your startup volume while booted from your Tiger installer disk. If it reports no errors or is able to fix any it finds, then reboot from your normal startup volume & try to download & install the combo version of the updater matching the version of the OS you want to end up with.

  • I'm trying to upgrade from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard

I'm trying to upgrade from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard but keep getting an error message, "This update requires Mac OS X version 10.6.".  Isn't Snow Leopard 10.6?....so now what?

It sounds more like you are trying to use an updater rather than the Snow Leopard installer DVD. You might read over the following:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

What OS is on the Install/Restore DVD that came wit your G5? If Tiger 10.4.x, you will need a black, retail Leopard install DVD. There is no free download of Leopard, only free updates once you have installed the base OS.
First use your Mac's Install/Restore DVD to install an OS & apps. Then upgrade the OS.
Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*.

Cannot upgrade serial number after download. 'This serial number is not for a qualifying product'. Trying to upgrade from ACS 5.5 Design Premium to ACS 6 Design Standard

start the installation of design premium cs5.5 just to make sure you're using the correct serial number.  once your serial number is accepted you'll see a screen giving you the option to install none, some or all of the cs5.5 programs.  at that point you can quit and not install anything having verified your cs5.5 serial number if you want nothing cs5.5 on your computer.
on the other hand, if your cs5.5 serial number is not accepted, you'll pinpoint the problem.
or, if your cs5.5 number is accepted, you could install a cs5.5 program and then install cs6.  it should recognize you have a cs5.5 program installed and NOT prompt you for you cs5.5 serial number allowing you to continue with your cs6 installation.
