Trying to use extended desktop

I typically use my 13" MBP with a 20" LG monitor in extended desktop mode. I would regularly plug in my computer when I got home to do work, and unplug it when i left the next morning. I hadn't used extended desktop for a few days, and the next time I plugged in the monitor, it came up with weird resolution with a different aspect ratio and an off center picture. The option for 1600 x 900 at 60Hz isn't listed in system preferences anymore. Do I have a hardware problem here?
Note: I did switch to a shorter VGA cable to reduce clutter on my desk before this problem occurred, but I can't get extended desktop to work properly with my old cable, so I don't think its a faulty cable.

OK open System Preferences/Displays and click the Colour Tab
Does a Profile appear in the left hand column that matches the name of your external monitor ?
If others appear try selecting one of them and then going back to the first
Uncheck "Show profiles for this display only' then try selecting some alternatives to see if this kicks it into action.
Also, try selecting the display profile then clicking 'Calibrate' and run through the adjustments and see if that brings it right.
If none of those work try /Utilities/Colorsync Utility and click Profile First Aid then Repair.

  • FF window too large when using extended desktop. Must reboot to return to correct size when I return it to the main screen.

I watch on-line videos on my HDTV by using "extended desktop" and sliding the FF window to the HDTV. The window becomes too large to access the controls to size it, or the top bar, to move it.
I can move FF window back to my pc by minimizing it on the pc toolbar, but when I "restore" it, it restores to the HDTV. I can not move it back to the pc, I also cannot re-size the screen

Hello.  Thank you all for giving my some advise but I do not understand any of it.
I'm a bit of a technophobe when it comes to computers.
It is a Sony Vaio and there is a model number on the base of the laptop PCG-71911M.  I have tried to look in the Control Panel to see if I can find its specifications but these days the system is too complicated for me to understand.
I did try seek out the information on the internet but just get a French site. Doh!!!
I use Nikon View NX software when I am viewing my images and again if I go to full screen for viewing the image the taskbar 'occludes' the little arrows I use to view the next image. When this happens I just click the little box in the far right edge of the taskbar and ViewNX 'disappears'.  When I go back in and click on 'show desktop' it clears the taskbar. I can then easily access the buttons to move forward.  Also when I am using PSE8 I have the same problem with accessing the buttons after I have completed my raw adjustments in the ACR window but it allows me to press the buttons with great difficulty if I can 'catch' the edge of the button and the ACR goes into PSE8 properly.  I'm sorry that I have not explained myself well. At the present it looks as if the ACR window is too 'large' for the PSC5 window it 'sits upon'. It seems that it does not want to 'sit over' the taskbar. I have eventually fathomed that I can use Cntl and O to open the image (Open Image button) but this is not the least bit satisfactory.  I don't know how I am going to access the other options eg 'done' and 'cancel' and 'save image'.
Thank you all once again and any help - but idiots' language please - would be gratefully accepted.
    Jacqueline.

  • Using extended desktop mode with ThinkPad x220

I have an Acer AL2216W external monitor. It has a resolution of 1680 x 1050
    http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/monitor/0000/Acer/AL2216W/AL2216Wsp2.shtml
When I use extended desktop mode with the external monitor set as the primary display, everything scales properly on both the external and internal monitor.
However, if I set the internal monitor as the primary display, the external display does not fill the screen (there is a big black border around the desktop).
In both cases, the resolution setting for the external monitor is 1680 x 1050.
    Is this normal behaviour?

    Hello,
That's how Windows behaves.  Supposedly Realtime Soft Ltd.'s UltraMon gives you more precise control over wallpaper under Windows, but I have not used it myself.

  • How best to link 2 MacBook Pros and use extended desktop

OK- I have two MacBook Pros- one 13" MacBook Pro 2.66GHz and one older 15" 2.4GHz but generally only use the smaller 13".  Since I quite like using my Final Cut Pro on my Mac for HOURS on end, I would reap benefit of being able to rope in the older one for extra "extended" desktop space.
I understand that I am probably going to have to use something like Screen Recycler?  Because I cannot see the option to use "extended desktop" on System Preference (which may be because, as yet, they are not linked) but is that the best option?
Also- what physical connection should I make between the two?  What cable?
Please and thanks kind people on this Oh So New And Shiny Forum.

ScreenRecycler is your only option, but you may find that the second screen isn't responsive enough for video editing. An external monitor would be greatly preferable to using your second MBP that way.
You can read all about how it works and how to connect your machines on the ScreenRecycler web site.

  • 8130 trying to use BB desktop software using Parrallels for Windows on a MAC

I have a blackberry 8130 which I used to sync on a Windows machine using the BB desktop software.  It worked great allowing me to transfer my contacts from Act! contact management software.
I have moved to a Mac and use Parrallels software to run Windows in the background on my Mac.  All my software works fine but i cannot get the blackberry desktop software to recognize my 8130.  ie - it does not show it as connected.
    Suggestions?

When configuring your Parallels windows profile, make sure that the USB ports are bridged into the client (windows) operating system. It's the same thing as with the CD-Rom drive, except that you may need to enter the configuration screen, and explicitly state that you want the USB connections to be mapped to windows as well.

  • Seeing more than one application at once using extended desktop display

Hi, I have just bought a new dvi external monitor and connected it to my MBP. In extended mode I can't seem have one app open on the external screen and another app on the mbp screen - as soon as I open a new app, the existing one disappears even if I've already dragged it accross to the external monitor. Not sure if it is something to do with spaces but it's bugging me. Any ideas gratefully received. Thanks

Depends on the apps, whether they are hidden, etc. You should be able to do what you are trying to do - I have Safari open on an external display, Word open on the internal display, for example.

  • Trying to Mirror my desktop?

Hello have a 24inch and just bought adapter "mini dvi to dvi" and then bought "hdmi to dvi" ! I tried to do this and getting frustrated sound wont work on tv... And cant get the resolution to match, wont play full screen??????
    I have a 32" Vizio lcd hdtv 720P
Should I just do dvi to dvi???
Please help me out guys tell me the trick

    Hi dohcguy
The iMac's mini-DVI output does not support audio, you need to run a parallel audio cable to the TV. To do this you will need a 3.5mm Stereo to RCA adapter (like the one in the link below) and RCA cables to go from the iMac's output jack to the set's input.
    http://www.nextag.com/Cables-to-Go-Mini-87727346/prices-html?nxtg=10c4e0a24051e- A3F9D6FEEE79567F
When the computer is mirroring video, it tries to synchronize the resolution of the built-in and external displays. If they can't be matched, the computer will change the resolution of both screens to the highest common resolution which may cause areas of the built-in display to be blacked out. Or worse if you select the proper resolutions for one, the other is so far off it's nearly unusable.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303086
With that setup you are better off using Extended desktop mode and setting each display to its native resolution. Then when you want to watch say a DVD movie drag the DVD Viewer panel to the TV display and select full screen. Or if you wish to show say an iPhoto slideshow on the TV drag the iPhoto window to the TV display and play it there. Using Extended Mode will allow you to use both displays at the same time to do two different things.
Tip: In the Displays Preference ✓ the box for "Show displays in the menu bar" this will give you a (display icon) up on your menu bar for quick access to display settings.

  • Extended Desktop Mode on iMac G5

    New iMac user here,
Just picked up a G5 iMac w/ 2.1 GHz. Video card is Radeon X600 XT.
Wanted to know if this will run 2 displays in extended desktop mode.
Everymac.com says that video card will, with some other firmware.
Has anyone tried this? What steps need to be done? Success rate?
    thanks for any helpful hints.

It's been a month since you posted this question, so I hope you get this reply. The answer is yes! I have been using extended desktop on my iMac G5 for a while now with no problems. Do a Google search for "screen spanning doctor." Double check the supported systems, but I think yours is on the list.

  • Extended Desktop Mode on iBook G4

I am trying to configure my iBook G4 to use extended desktop mode with a Dell M780 monitor. I currently have the Dell monitor mirroring the iBook display, but would like to have it in extended desktop mode.
OS X Help Viewer tells me to go to System Prefs > Displays > Arrangement, but when I go to the Displays section there are only two tabs: "Display" and "Color", and there are no other buttons, menus or anything related to arrangement.
My graphics card, which perhaps has something to do with this, is an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200. There are 32 MB total of VRAM. Core Image is not supported on either the iBook display or the Dell display.
    iBook G4 (Model Name PowerBook6,5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1.07 GHz, 768MB Memory

    Hi Mathew,
    Welcome to the forum.
The iBooks do not support extended desktop. Should you wish to have this feature, you can with a third party solution. More details here:
    http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html
Be aware, if your iBook is under warranty or you have AppleCare, this could be void if there is any damage caused as a direct result of applying the above. That said, a lot of people have done this without any issues. Infact I have yet to come across anyone who has had issues.

  • Extended desktop iMac - Air

    Hello!
I have iMac (Intel - Dual Core) and Macbook Air. Can you please tell me how can i connect them together to have extended desktop.
    Any help appriciated.
    Kind regards.

Sorry, you can't do what you're asking. Neither have any way of taking a video in signal.
I believe that some recent 27" iMacs may be able to do so, but nothing else as yet.
You'll need a seperate monitor. The iMac will only Mirror on another monitor unless it's newer than your description suggests; the MBA will probably be able to use extended desktop, but you'll still need a stand-alone monitor (or TV).
That connects to the mini-DVI port with apropriate adapter cables for the device used.

  • Extended desktop mode with external display

I use my Macbook with an external display. Sometimes I need to use extended desktop mode and sometimes I don't need the extra desktop space and prefer to work only with my external display. My needs change as I work throughout the day and I'm getting tired of having to close the Macbook to put it to sleep and then wake it up without opening the lid to just have one display (the external one).
I'm wondering if anyone knows if there's a way to put the Macbook built-in display to sleep while continuing to work with the external display, without having to put the Macbook to sleep first. I'm thinking that there's got to be a way to do this (maybe there's a piece of software out there or some other work around?).

Thanks for your suggestion. That's actually a workaround I've used. The only problem is, the display isn't really put to sleep. The result: I still get an extended desktop and occasionally I "lose" my pointer. A bit annoying, but thus far the only solution I've come up with.

  • Extended desktop issue

I've tried to run extended desktop from macbook air while connecting it with an external monitor. But I can't control or move the cursor to the external monitor when there is a window popping on the external monitor. Thanks.

Go to System Preferences -> Displays -> Arrangement
    and check/adjust the positions.

  • Azure cloud application (trying to use emulator) is not working with NCover

So, at work, we are trying to use NCover Desktop for code coverage on a cloud based azure web application. We are using Azure SDK V1.8 and Visual Studio 2010.
I researched online for answer and found some article a little bit helpful in setting up environment and stuff. Following is the procedure I'm following for this.
Create new NCover project and select auto config
Reset IIS and detect w3wp.exe process
    Start application and select/deselect executable.
Problem is, I think VS is running on localhost rather than IIS, that's why even after restarting IIS, I'm not able to detect w3wp.exe process to attach.
how can I fix this issue?
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Frankthecoder,
    Thanks for your post.
    >>>1.Create new NCover project and select auto config
    >>>2.Reset IIS and detect w3wp.exe process
    >>>3.Start application and select/deselect executable.
Azure cloud web role application usually use the Visual Studio IISExpress to host the web when you debug. It not use the local IIS. If above solution is right, you can try to set the web application running with local IIS.
    >>>Problem is, I think VS is running on localhost rather than IIS, that's why even after restarting IIS, I'm not able to detect w3wp.exe process to attach.
Right click your web application and select Properties=>Web section=>Servers=> select "Local IIS".
Besides, I suggest you take a look at below thread and get more information.

  • Extended desktop = slow startup

Hi, Im using IMac mid 2011, extended desktop via VGA converter (Apple product).
About an years ago (Maybe it was a time when I started use extended desktop via VGA converter), my IMac starting to slowdown on startup, here is the symptom s:
    1. Click the Power button.
    2. Startup choir. (Boeeiiiing!)
    3. No screen reaction. (Black screen)
    4. 30sec of wait. (Sometimes, 5min)
    5. Screen on. (White with Apple logo)
    6. Oh god Finally!
I thought this was caused by bootcamp till now, but now I think it was a simply caused by this VGA converter.
Before I push a power button, I removed this VGA converter. Then the screen immediately turn on (going white with the apple logo) with startup choir (Boeeeiiiing). Then again startup with VGA converter connected, the symptom I mentioned above starts again.
Is there any solution for a fast startup rather than disconnect the VGA converter everytime before turn on IMac?

Reset the SMC and PRAM 2-3 times back to back. Then re-start normally and test. If that does not help then try a different connection such as HDMI, it's possible the connection and/or cables are going bad to the VGA connection.
