TS1367 MacBook Pro startup problems?

My MacBook pro (late 2008 model upgraded with OSX lion) locked up on me, now it will turn on and start to boot up but when progress bar is about half finished it shuts down?  Any advice short of taking it to Apple store/genius?

I have a problem where the start up starts for a while and then the screen goes black.  It is like the machine is asleep.  In order to try again you have to hold the power button down to shut down.  I have re installed lion and it works fine, but as soon as it updates, the problems starts again

    2011 MBP
OK I am an idiot for trying to update to Yosemite which basically killed my laptop. After a long time of trying everything I eventually deleted and reformatted the hd and reinstalled maverick + data from Time Machine (via internet recovery). But still the problem seems to persist more or less identically after working ok for some hours.
I opened up the laptop this morning and the screen was just blank and I couldn’t restart (just got the grey screen). I can open up in safe mode but there is some very strange behaviour. At the moment the screen is divided in half with the r side on the L and the L side on the R. This is new, no weird screen issues before (except the grey screen on startup).
I have tried internet recovery again to use disc utility, the disc verifies fine. There is something strange going on with the permissions though - 2 permissions need repairing and I repair them but when I re-verify they need repairing again. I have repaired them about 10 times now but have no idea if they are connected with my problems or not.
Anyway I am at a total loss to know what is wrong or what I can do about it and getting desperate (I need to work!!). Any ideas?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Macbook Pro startup problems

Recently, I accidentally closed the lid of my MBP before it shutdown completely. Usually, this would cause a problem on the startup the next time where I would push the power button and the only thing happening is the light on the latch button would be half lit and you could hear the fan or some other components startup. The screen will not turn on and nothing else happens.
It's been happening with increasing frequency now. Can anyone help?

This seems to have happened to me now, also. I had just finished installing an update to my external FW800 HD (Western Digital MyBookPro 500GB). The installer said the installation was successful, but then my MyBook icon disappeared, and a dialog box came up saying the drive was disconnected unexpectedly. I clicked the go-away button, then I got the dimmed wipe-down saying I had to power off my machine by holding down the power button at least 5 seconds. I obeyed. The screen has been completely dark ever since.
Now, I can't get further than a half-dim latchlight. None of the startup key combinations work (I opened up the article and tried them all). I reset the SMC/PMU to no avail. Another early symptom was that the DVD drive was making a repeating racket like it was looking for a disk, but couldn't find one. I followed the troubleshooting guide to the point where it says to try to boot from the install disk (pressing "c"). The sign of life was that when I got the disk about 75% in, it grabbed the disk like normal, but then silence. So, it ate my Install DVD. Like all the other keys, the eject button doesn't work.
I should note a few things. I noticed that the machine would heat up, but I couldn't hear any drive activity after initally inserting the DVD. There's a quiet spin like a fan or maybe the HD idling, but no sounds of activity. I tried leaving it on (latchlight solid and dim) for more than an hour, and also leaving it off and unplugged for more than an hour.
I tried an old trick that used to work on a PowerBook G3 of plugging in a USB device as a way to interrupt a stall. I tried booting from the network. I scanned through these forums and saw quite a few recent posts like this.
The only service trouble this MBP-17 has had in the past 15 months is a swolen battery that was replaced back in May-June. I had no trouble with the new battery.
Any ideas of what else to do before calling AppleCare?

  • MacBook Pro Startup and Display Issues

I've been having some random problems with my MacBook Pro (2.16 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 100 GB 7200 rpm hard drive, ATI Radeon X1600 graphics). Specifically:
    1. Lines across the screen and purple boxes sometimes appear.
    2. The graphic effects (e.g. zooming a window) sometimes get "frozen" on the screen. In other words a remnant from the animation will stay until the window is refreshed.
    3. The Mac sometimes freezes during the startup process. Sometimes the login screen will be unresponsive and other times the Mac will almost bootup but fail when loading startup items.
    4. Less frequently the Mac will freeze randomly. I previously had iStat Menus installed and each time the MacBook Pro froze up it indicated both read and write disk activities.
Yesterday I decided to wipe the machine clean and start from scratch in case there were a software issue or corruption on the hard drive that was causing my woes. I completely erased my hard drive and even zeroed the entire disk to make sure everything was completely wiped out. I also disconnected all peripherals to simplify things as much as possible.
The first time I tried the reinstall everything completed successfully but the "Welcome" movie froze part way through. I then had problems running the install again. I was able to boot off the Leopard DVD, but the machine froze a couple of clicks into the install procedure. After numerous tries I was able to erase the hard drive once again and install Leopard. This completed successfully and I installed all updates.
The problems started to show up again almost immediately, however. I installed iLife and iWork and all the updates and had the computer freeze up on me again during a reboot. I also noticed that the display issues started to show up again even before installing any third-party software.
I've tried running disk tests with Drive Genius 2.1, but no errors have been reported. I've also used the freeware Rember program to run memory tests but have yet to see any errors. Sometimes my Mac powers up without any problems and once it's powered up it often stays running for days. The display issues appear quite frequently. I've using iStat Menus to keep an eye on the temperature sensors and everything appears to be normal - so it doesn't appear to be temperature related.
Fortunately the computer's still covered under the extended AppleCare warranty, but I would like to have some idea what's going on before I take it in just in case they're not able to reproduce the issues.
Any suggestions and insights would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance for reading my rather long-winded message.
    Cheers,
    Tim

I took my MacBook Pro in for repair and it turned out to be an issue with the logic board. I had the logic board replaced (fortunately it was covered under my extended AppleCare warranty) and these problems are a thing of the past.

  • MacBook Pro boot problems

Hi. Over the last few days i have been having problems with my MacBook Pro starting up. If i put it to sleep it will not wake up, just get a blank screen and if i turn it off, it will not boot. I can hear the drive spin up, the chime sounds, but just get a blank screen. The apple logo is not illuminated and the caps lock key illuminates when pressed. The only way to get it to boot is to turn it off and on repeatedly around 30 times and then itll boot up and work fine. My battery was pretty bad so thought this might be the cause but after replacing it, its still the same. Its running 10.8.2 and i think its a late 2010 MacBook?

The folder / question mark means that the system is either not on the startup disk you're using, or has been damaged.
If you can't boot from your original hard drive (you may need to press the Option key while booting to select a startup disk), try booting from your install DVD (hold C while starting up). Option will not show drives or partitions that don't have a bootable system on them (it can, however, show a drive with a damaged system that will, when tried, yield the ? and folder icon.)
You should then be able to run disk repair or switch back to your original startup disk so you can move some "stuff" to an external drive.

  • Macbook Pro speed problems

I just bought a MacBook Pro. I have always been a PC user and I have a number of notebooks curently but I really wanted to try a mac mainly for working with video. But in the three weeks since I bought it I'm shocked by how slow it is for simple things like launching a browser. I still have my two year old Dell that I use for work sitting next to the mac. The new mac has 2 Gigs of ram and yet it's so much slower than the older dell it is shocking. Does anyone else experience this?
Second problem, when the browser loads a page half the time it gives a server not found message. Yet I can load the same site on the Dell instantly without problems. Other times half the images don't load on the web page. Even the Apple site. Does anyone have this problem? I feel like I have steped back about five years in the PC world.
This is a real post and I'm pretty disapointed.
    Thanks

What is the browser that you are using?
Have you done all the Airport Extreme and Firmware Updates via Software Update?
I would recommend Safari over Firefox because it seems to load faster in terms of loading a page or startup.
Also, the only problem with Macbook Pro is the connectivity of Airport Extreme, other than that,it works blazing fast than any PC of comparable specifications.
For my case,i did the Airport update using a LAN connection since wireless wasn't connected to internet.
Dont get put off by this minor issue(which has already been solved),Mac OS X is WAY MORE ADVANCED THAN WINDOWS BY AT LEAST 5 YEARS.

  • Macbook Pro startup screen distorted

I have a 2 Ghz Intel Core i7 16GB RAM, Early 2011 - 15" Macbook Pro running OS X 10.8.3.  When I start it up, the startup splash screen doesn't fill the entire screen.  After a few seconds, the screen shows distorted colors and shapes, and then resizes and boots up normally.  Is this a known problem? Can this be fixed?

If the PRAM reset doesn't fix it, it sounds like a bad 10.8 update or a hardware issue.
Try to see if you can do a #8 here
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Make sure to reboot twice so EFI takes hold as that loads first before OS X .
You can install OS X on a external drive and boot from it, see if it's not a hardware problem.

  • Macbook Pro Login Problem

My issue is that sometimes when I try to wake the computer from sleep mode, the computer will take about 2 to 3 minutes for the login screen to come up. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what to do about it. This has happened in Leopard and Tiger and I have had fresh installs of both, and it still does it.
    Thanks for the help.
    Macbook Pro 2.4 Ghz
    2 GB Ram

Check for software and firmware updates first, if all that is in order try a SMC reset.
    1. turn your mac off
    2. remove power cord and battery.
    3. hold the power button down for a good 10 seconds.
    4. put the battery and power in again.
    5. restart and see if it worked.
You could also try a PRAM reset.
Turn on your mac and immediately after the startup sound hold down the OptionAlt+PR keys.
Do this until you heard the startup chime a 3rd time then let go and let it boot.

  • 2012 Retina Macbook Pro WiFi problem

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro with Retina display that's been upgraded to Mountain Lion.  It is having WiFi connection issues.
    Specifically,
    1.  Upon startup it will not find the network.  I have to turn off the wifi and turn it back on to have it find the network.  Annoying.  It used to happen only intermittently; now it happens every start up.  It's getting worse.
    2.  It will randomly every few hours drop the wifi connection, requiring me to turn off the wifi and turn it back on.
I've tried the one fix people on here suggested: deleting the wifi network profile I use and putting it back in.
    Didn't make a difference.
Has anyone found a better fix?
I'm disappointed that Apple released this version of OS with such a glaring problem.  A laptop without a reliable wifi connection is a complete waste of money.

Happening to me too. Macbook Pro Retina Display with Mountain Lion. I'm experience occassional drops while actively working on my Macbook that requires me to turn off Wireless and turn it back on to get a connection. I've noticed this twice in two days.
I'm had my Macbook for about a week and immediately installed Mountain Lion, so I don't have a previous version to compare with. I could turn off Bluetooth at the moment, because I'm not using any Bluetooth devices, but it is likely I will be getting a bluetooth device in the future, then this workaround won't be useful.
I hope Apple can come up with a software patch?
