  • "Poor Connection" with Facetime

    Hello Facetime pros,
I can no longer facetime with any of my usual contacts.  We have a strong connection to the local wifi.  We get an initial answer with a frozen frame from the other side, the audio is too choppy to use.  Looking for help on this.
Here's our status - Facetime was previously working fine - could go to Uruguay and Wisconsin - no issues.
When I buy my mom an Ipad for xmas - and we try and facetime - poof - the issue above.  I try with my usual contacts - same issue.  I try from varioius wifi networks to try and isolate to a wifi issue on my side - same trouble from all the networks I try to all the recipients I've previoiusly contacted successfully.
We have tried all the suggestions here from Facetime Troubleshooting here -> http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3367
We have also tried these that one runs into when searching for this issue:
Toggle Wi-Fi off and back on again (Settings > Wi-Fi).
Toggle FaceTime off and back on again (Settings > FaceTime).
    Restart your router.
    Reset your router.
Restart your device by pressing and holding the power button.
Force the FaceTime app to close and launch again. To do so, double tap the home button, then tap and hold the FaceTime app icon; when they jiggle tap the minus to close the app. Double click the home button and restart the FaceTime app.
Changing DNS info may fix FaceTime connection issues. To do this on iOS devices, simply tap Settings > Wi-Fi and then tap the blue arrow next to your Wi-Fi connection and edit the DNS field (enter the DNS servers; 8.8.8.8; Google’s Public DNS) . Please see this article for more info.
Tap Settings > General > Date & Time and set a time that is one year ahead (like 2013) and try again. If this does not solve the issue, make sure you toggle “Set Automatically” on.
I have not tried reseting my device, but I had done that recently for another reason, so it's been done within the last 30 days.
    Please help.

No guarantee, but things to try.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Poor connection on Facetime

My new iPad retina has a poor conenction when using Facetime and a wi-fi connection.  My iPod works fine on the same network.  I tried resetting the network connections.  It is AT&T capable, but cellular has not been set up yet. Any ideas? Thank you

This is probably a network speed/congestion problem.
Why does your iPod work well when the iPad doesn't? Remember that the iPad screen (especially the Retina) is much larger than the iPod screen and much more data has to be moved through the network to support iPad Facetime versus iPod Facetme.

  • My Facetime keeps freezing and showing poor connection

I have recently purchased a new iPad mini and when i use Facetime the screen freezes to a blur of the screen image and "poor connection, video will resume when connection improves" appears on the screen. I have been through all the Apple support trouble shooting and this has not fixed the problem. I have tried the iPad on different internet systems and the error still occurs. Has anyone else had this happen to them? I was reading on a forum from the U.S. that this is a software problem effecting newer models as older gen 1 iPads are unaffected and still working.

Your machine is 4 years old, it's too dated to run the fat cow Lion.
Revert to Snow Leopard as it's faster and better for that model.

  • Why do I get a "poor connection" error every time I try to use FaceTime on my new router

I Have a new router, now every time I try to use facetime I get "poor connection" error. Can anyone help?

Did you already check this article?

    More things to try:
    Wi-Fi network issues
Make sure that your Wi-Fi network is set up using the recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points.
If you encounter issues using a Wi-Fi network, use standard Wi-Fi network troubleshooting to resolve interference and other issues.
If you're using router, firewall, or security software that restricts Internet access, make sure that the ports documented in Using FaceTime behind a Firewall are open.
FaceTime requires a broadband connection. Performance might vary according to network throughput and usage.

I had this same thing happen to me.  I was using my brand new iphone 5 (texting and listening to music through the speakers) when it flashed the apple logo, stopped my music and brought me to the lock screen.

  • FaceTime iOS 6 Poor Connection message

I never had any FaceTime issues until I upgraded my iPhone 4S to iOS 6. Now I'm constantly getting the following error message:
    "Poor Connection
The video will resume automatically when the connection improves."
I just tested with SpeedTest and I'm getting 19mbps download 2.5mbps upload.
It happens with anyone I FT with iPhone or iPad
    Anyone else having this problem?

This is brutal! I've used FaceTime on my 4S and iPad 3 on iOS 5 without issue all the time. As soon as I upgraded to iOS 6 I constantly get
    "Poor Connection
The video will resume automatically when the connection improves."
I barely can get 10 seconds anymore! The picture quality and performance makes FaceTime utterly unusable and that's no exaggeration. Anybody I used to FaceTime with all the time now has to end up calling me cause being cut off every 10s isn't very productive. Using it for long distance calls is no longer an option, thanks Apple!
Just now, my brother and his wife were ready to tell my dad he was going to be a grandfather. This being his first grandchild, I wanted to see his reaction and with me living an 8 hour drive away, FaceTime was the solution. At least it was before iOS 6. What I saw was my dad then I hear my brother say,
    "Uh dad, ....."
    "Poor Connection
The video will resume automatically when the connection improves."
    "Reconnecting"
    "Connection lost"
I quickly go to the iPad, also on iOS 6, to connect with my brother again and I've missed it since in the first second of "poor connection" nobody noticed that it froze, the good news was heard and Apple caused me to miss a great family moment. Once again, THANKS APPLE! So, in the first second after reconnecting I realized that I missed a great moment, I take the chance to ask my dad how he felt. I see my dad about to smile, screen freezes and
    "Poor Connection
The video will resume automatically when the connection improves."
    "Connection lost"
This is not an issue with my network, nor is it an issue with my cellular network. It was working without any problems on my iPad on the 18th, when I used it to talk to my girlfriend, before I updated it on the 19th and the iPhone was able to FaceTime without issues on the 19th before I updated it on the 20th. It's very clearly iOS 6
    Thanks again Apple!

  • Facetime iOS 8.1 Poor Connection AOL/Netgear

I updated my ipad to iOS 8.1 and Facetime suddenly started to suffer repeated poor connections.
My Internet provider is AOL and my wireless router is Netgear model:DG834G v5.
    This solution worked for me:
    1. The following setting is used by AOL Broadband to set up broadband routers: MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit): 1450
    2. Login to your Netgear smartwizard router manager page. http://192.168.9.1.
    3. Go to the advanced settings on the left of the page and click WAN Setup.
    4. On that page go MTU Size and in the box to the right enter 1450.
    5. Click apply.
    That's it done.
Reset Network Settings on the iPad and log back into your wireless network.
This worked for me, I've posted it as it may work for you.
    Mike.

Update - after reading other blogs and articles about the problems of ios8, I changed the DNS server to a public one (I used Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) instead of the one provided through Time Warner. I plugged the phone in and... no crashed internet connection!  I unplugged the phone, turned on icloud backup again, plugged the phone in and... still internet!  Again, this issue only happened after updating to ios8, and I only changed the DNS server on the one affected phone, but it seems to have resolved my problem at least.
c'mon, Apple - I shouldn't have to spend countless hours and tons of data usage to resolve your problem!

  • IOS6 Facetime Poor Connection

Hi Folks, I'm very furstrated about the unstable connection of iOS6 facetime.
My girlfriend lives in China, nd bascially everyday we facetime for awhile. However---after I updated to iOS6---all kinds of problems just pop out. One is the stability of facetime. It worked find for almost a month since I updated to IOS6 (and always good when I use ios5) until yesterday.
Now when we facetime, her video will just turn into black after couple seconds and I can not see her (but can still see myself). Instead of the video, it says: "poor connection,The video will resume automatically when the connection improves."
At first we thought that was my problem. So I called couple of other my friends, and
    1. My friend using iphone4/iOS 5.1====no problem; (US)
    2. My friend using iphone4/iOS 6   ====no problem; (HK)
    3. My roommate using iphone4S/ios 5.1=====no problem; (US)
So We thought that could be her problem. So she called couple of her friends:
    1. Her friend using iphone4/ios 6 =====same problem happened (CHN)
    2. Her friend using iphone 4/ios 5.1======no problem (US)
I don't think any internet settings was changed. The internet, and the wireless works good for both of us.
    We both:
    1. restarted our router and modem;
    2. reset the wireless setting on our iphones;
    3. restarted our iphones.
I don't know what to do...
    Can anyone help?
    Best regards,
    Bing

Your issue is more than likely bandwidth related although there is a lot of variables that can cause issues. You can use the free Speed Test app to test your network speed using your iPhone when the problem arises. This could tell you which end the issue is at. It may be anything from older slower wifi routers, slow Internet connection, which your provider may throttle for certain uses, or network congestion in  your area especially if you use cable Internet.

  • FaceTime Poor Connection Error

I bought an Ipad Mini for my dad so we could facetime and he can see his grandkids. My wife and I use factime when I travel for work. When we would try to FT with my dad we would get a poor conneciton error and they could see and hear us fine but we could only hear them. After multiple chats, talks, calls etc. with Apple support none of which solved the problem, they decided to send my dad a new tablet. New tablet still does not work.  Same poor connection message, same problem. Skype works though. What a massive fail on Apple's part. Their signature app they use to promote their devices wont work, but a competing app works fine. And NOBODY from apple can figure out the issue!!

    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
You will have to re enter your Wi-Fi password.
No data is lost due to a reset.

  • FaceTime on ios8 constantly saying poor connection

since updating to iOS 8 when face timing the screen will constantly say poor connection on one side of the call. This only happens to the person making the call. The person receiving the call can still see the other person and the connection is fine but if you make the call it goes to the poor connection screen and stay like that for the duration of the call.

Hi, I have the same problem. when making a FaceTime, the caller always gets poor connection after a few seconds.
i Found out that if you call using audio and then switch to video afterwards it doesn't do it.
    hope this helps!

  • FaceTime poor connection

I received an iPad mini for Christmas and am unable to keep connection when face timing. When I attempt to FaceTime everything is fine for 30-40 seconds and then I get the "poor connection" screen  When the other end (an iPad 2) calls me everything is fine. The problem seems to be when I initiate the call. It doesn't seem to be a bad connection or it wouldn't work when the other person face times me. I have reset my iPad and the router and nothing seems to be working. I am currently running iOS 8.1.2.

  • Ipad2 FaceTime rear facing camera poor connection freezes

ever since iOS 8 when on FaceTime the front camera works fine, when i switch to the rear camera it work for about 5-7 seconds than freezes and says poor connection on my recipients side and than i have to go to the front camera. Several iOS 8 updates and this issue is not fixed.

Same problem here. Using a brand new iPad mini on iOS 8 and when i call a iPhone or iPad over wifi the screen freezes with the "Poor connection" message in the middle. If i facetime someone and they are on 3G the connection is fine. I contacted Apple support and after over an hour they still hadnt managed to solve the problem but came up with all sorts of excuses such as "the newer iPads have more pixels" and "the newer iPads are more bandwidth heavy."
I have seen on a U.S. forum that this is being attributed to a software problem but this was not mentioned when i contacted Apple support.
