My apple macbook pro retina 15'' ME664 has problems with sound.Either there will be no sound at all or at startup there il be very scary and broken sound and afterwards still there would be no sound.Secondly , it does not start in one shot.atleast 2 to 3 times pressing power button for longer time starts it up and afterwards still there will be no sound. Please help

This morning i was not able to hear sound on my recently purchased  macbookpro retina 15 inch model. My attempts to resolve this issue by going to system preferences and removing the mute box that was ticked as active. i had downloaded much earlier a mac version of logmein app and noticed that in the sound  box noted above that there was a bar indicating that the default was now to logmein. i had never used this app. Why it started today, i have no idea. I moved the logmein application to trash and deleted the app , however it did not remove the default option which still blocked the sound.
Going to a macforum gave the tha anser that to remove the logmein app, it first had to be reinstalled a nd them use the uninstaller option ftrom the dropdown menu. for now that has resolved the failure to allow sound oputput.

I own a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) with a 500 GB Apple SSD SM0512F (Revision UXM2JA1Q). I’d like to replace this original SSD with a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 1TB. Am I going to encounter problems in trying to remove & replace the SSDs? That is, are they the same type of SSD, with same connection?
I plan to have a "tech" do the actual work inside the MacBook Pro, but I'd like to know if the current SSD can be easily replaced with the Samsung SSD 840 EVO?
Please note that I am so "green" that I'm not even sure if this provides adequate information to answer my question!

it's not possible to replace your SSD with 840 EVO.
Samsung 840 EVO is a standard 2.5" drive with SATA connector, while Retina MacBooks use proprietary "stick" form-factor with PCI Express interface.
AFAIK, there are no compatible PCIe SSDs on the market, the only upgrades you'll find are for earlier (2012) Retina MacBook Pros which use SATA.
If you're looking for extra capacity, external USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt HDD/SSD is the best option.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Is my Apple MacBook Pro Retina a Lemon?

Brand new(7 days old) MacBook Pro Retina 2.4GHz 16GB SSD 15" with latest OS updates. I treat this MacBook like it is my newborn child. I am extremely careful with the hardware AND software configuration, almost to the extent that it's a compulsion. I have used multiple computers with Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems. I take extra time to find out the best way to treat computers as to avoid troubles like these, so I feel especially upset about losing two hours of work on my clients project. Luckily everything is backed up on GitHub and Dropbox.
I used a great tutorial from mactuts on setting up a new mac the way that developers do, and I have set up Windows and Linux just fine. I doubt there is a system or program configuration issue on my part. I was running a few programs that are not processor or RAM intensive.
    - Sublime Text 2
    - Google Chrome
    - CodeKit (Sass compiler)
    - iTerm2 (terminal)
    - Dropbox (was not syncing)
    - Moom (window arranging utility)
    - Alfred (app and file finder utility)
There were absolutely no peripherals connected to the MacBook, no mice, USB devices, or even headphones. Only apps running.
I was typing code into Sublime Text 2 and I saved the file, watched the browser for live changes on the web site I was working on (thanks to CodeKit) and the page refreshed fine, when I moved the cursor via the touchpad back to Sublime Text 2 from the Google Chrome window, I was greeting with a 100% frozen MacBook Pro. The entire GUI was stuck, no keys would function at all, and I didn't know what to do. I searched for answers, couldn't find anything, and I held down the power button until the MacBook turned off. The computer was not hot at all during this time.
I restarted the computer after some more searching and found instructions on verifyng the disk. All is fine according to the system Disk Utilities. I just got done with a 1 hour and 6 minute Apple Hardware test with the extended testing option checked. No errors were found. The aluminum north of the function keys got SUPER hot.
The MacBook has done something similar twice before but I shrugged it off. I was doing similar tasks as may have triggered the recent problem, but the freeze only lasted seconds instead of forever. How could a 2600 dollar computer freeze during text editing and web browsing? Have I been sold a lemon? Is this a common problem? Can this problem be corrected? Can the cause of this problem be eliminated?
I have another laptop that is over 4 years old (Toshiba Sattelite) running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. It has never had a problem running simple text editors, code watchers/compilers(Sass/Compass/Guard), or browsers, even all at the same time. From the reputation that Apple has, I was expecting more. I figured the computer might have a few hiccups if rendering a huge video file, or running 3 external monitors with Photoshop and Illustrator open and working, but definitely not with the programs I had open.
I switched to Apple to learn iOS and OSX development, to make awesome apps. I am 90% sold on taking this back to Apple and getting a full refund, never to go back. I hope someone can help change my mind and fix my computer.
    Thank you so much.

Ah! A Linux user. That explains things. I wondered why you were installing a bunch of stuff I had never heard of on a week-old computer.
The bottom line is that OS X is not Linux. It may look like it sometimes, it shares a few libraries and some command-line tools, but it is completely different. Your old Linux habits will only cause you trouble.
The big question is what 3rd party software have you installed? You listed a few, but there have got to be others. It is a sad fact that OS X has zero credibility among most most corporate and open-source software developers. There is a vast amount of software that hasn't been updated in almost 10 years. How far would you get installing the latest and greatest Linux tools on a Linux box circa 2007?
As a new Mac user, you are unfamiliar with what software is good and what isn't. Some of the software you listed above is fine, but why install it if the operating system already comes with equivalent functionality? There is nothing wrong with doing that if the Apple software doesn't do what you need. But just doing it out of habit or because it is some open source project is likely to have poor results. For example, OS X version 10.8.4 was recently released. Well-written software from 2006 will run fine. Poorly written software from last week will crash, cause slowdowns, and all kinds of other problems.
If you don't have a good reason for using Chrome instead of Safari or iTerm instead of Terminal, then you are likely going to be at the mercy of 3rd party developers who have more control over your system than you do. Make yourself at home and learn your way around before you invite a bunch of rowdy kids over for a party. Later on, you can throw some parties and have fun, but you will be the one in charge. Right now, they are probably running wild in your basement reconfiguring your plumbing.
This is so common that I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck, run it, and paste the results here.
Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

  • Apple Macbook Pro Retina with display issue Samsung LED

Once I have plugged the HDMI cable from Macbook Pro to Samsung 24" LED Monitor, the display remains black. Doesn't seemed like the samsung monitor recognised the Apple Macbook Pro at all. I have reset the PRAM and troubleshoot it with Apple and meanwhile still waiting for answer from Apple. They have acknowledged of the problem but there is no solution. I erally need the second extended monitor for my design work. Bit ridiculus that the most powerful Apple system cannot even do the simplest thing. I am stuck now. Please help.

Just letting everyone in the forum know that I have been a loyal user of apple for the past 20 years and this is quite embarassing to know that HDMI cannot work with a samsung LED monitor. In addition, I have been a Apple Tech and Sales.
Also, there are a lot of users out there who are having the same propblem,. This is certainly not good enough.
I still find it wayyyyy too early to blame Apple so generally. This other "lot of users" has a lot of home-made problems, such as incompatible displays, adapters, etc.
BTW, mind telling the exact display model number?
And thanks for the response further above.

  • Macbook Pro retina have a network problem that I need to restart my computer before getting it's able to connect to internet

Macbook Pro Retina 15" 2012, Mountain Lion OS pre-installed.
    Case 1:
It connects to WiFi home network and internet fine.
    Put the machine to sleep.
Upon waking up, it can scan for my home network that it used to connect to, but either not able to connect, or even after it connects, it just can't let me access internet.
Restarting the machine can revive by getting it connects properly to internet.
Toggling the Bluetooth won't help here.
    Case 2:
It connects to network using USB ethernet adapter.
Same case, everything works fine before sleep. After sleeping for some time, it's not able to connect to the internet any more unless I do a restart.
It's able to access local area network though, as I'm able to see some local network machines in my Finder window. Yes, I clicked on them and able to connect to their share folders. But just can't get through internet.
OS Problem? I'm not able to roll back to other OS, I swear I don't want to go through that painful process.
Hardware problem : WiFi card? Don't think so, because I can't get to internet even I immediately switch to USB ethernet adapter.
Hardware problem : USB ethernet? It works fine in other non-Mac machines.
There got to be something wrong in somewhere that it doesn't re-establish the connection to the internet, no matter what I do.
None of the functions in the network utility tool can help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013 Compatibility issue with Bose Companion 5 USB Speakers on Mavericks

Hi, I wonder if somebody has compatibility issues of new MacBook Pro Retina (late 2013) and Bose Companion 5 USB speakers? They work fine on a left USB port on my MacBook Pro, but doesn't work at all on a right one: USB speakers are not recognised or if recognised as "Uknown Audio Device", they doesn't work any way and iTunes stops playing till I take USB cable out.
I tested them already on two identical machines - the same issue: left USB port works fine, right one - not.
While comparing, I tested this audio device also with other MacBooks:
MacBook Pro 15" 2008 (Mavericks) - both USB ports work fine
MacBook 13" 2010 (Mountain Lion) - both USB ports work fine
MacBook Pro 13" Retina early 2013 (Mavericks) - both USB ports work fine
So it is somehow related exactly to the MacBook Pro Retina 15" Retina late 2013 with Maverics. I guess some sound card and USB port communication issue. Does any body exeriences such problems as well?

    Hi,
Im having USB problems with storage devices and android phone connections
    Thanks

I dont do anything except skype and facebooking and the temperatures are going really crazy (never below 95 degrees C). Its just impossible to touch the top part of the keyboard leave aside putting this LAPtop on my LAP. I am really wondering if spending 2700 euros on this computer was worth it? This is my first Mac and I was kinda expecting a flawless computer but . Please help me out guys, what should I do?

I am using MacBook Pro Retina(Mid-2012, bought new) 2.6 Ghz CPU since several months, CPU temps go upto 104 C on my Mac but it is normal as per CPU specs provided by intel, In your case Max CPU T junction temp allowed is 100 C , You may have either CPU listed below.
There is absolutley no problem with your MacBook Pro, so dont worry & do not waste your time.

  • Macbook pro retina display wifi connection problem.

Macbook pro Retina display - 3 weeks old - connects erratically to home wifi over Airport Express
iphone and iMac connects to the same wifi network. I am connecting through iphone hot spot to write this question. please help.

I have posted my solution  i.e. update airport utility software. Ocourse you needa working internet connection for that!
I have a 27 inch imac, mac book pro, mac book pro with retina display, iphone 4, iphone 4s, 2 x iphone 5. Each device was showing erratic internet connections at some point in time or the other.
I just updated Airport Utility Software. You can find it in Applications/Utilities. When you click on Airport utilities, it opens a window with 2 icons. The bottom icon will look like your airport express. click on that and then you will get info on the right. If , I repeat if, your Airport utility software requires updation, you will be prompted in the info box. Click that and then you will be fine.
However, the irony is that you need an internet connection for this. I set up a hot spot on my phone and did it.

  • Macbook Pro Retina: can anyone help me with running 2 extended desktop DVIs?

I know I need 2 thunderbolt to DVI adapters for this. In the UK these are £25 each, but the MiniDisplayPort to DVI adapters which look the same are very much cheaper .....
    http://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-Female-Adapter-Macbook-Laptop/dp/B003BHHIA4/re f=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1359830910&sr=1-1&keywords=minidisplayport+to +DVI
They look the same as thunderbolt to DVIs but is there a difference? Anybody know if the thunderbolt to DVI is an ACTIVE adapter, which means the cheaper versions won't work?
Secondly, I've read scary stuff here from people who think their thunderbolt to DVI fried their monitors. Is there any evidence which supports this?
Does anyone out there use two extended desktop DVIs on a daily basis with a Pro Retina? Any tips or things I should know?

I suggest you buy the Apple TB/MDP to DVI adapters as I have tried another brand and it dod not work. That was on a late 15" 2011 model, YMMV.
Second I have never heard of a Apple TB/MDP to DVI adapter ever frying a monitor of any make or model.
Please post references to this claim.
May be possible with a poorly desinged adapter with some of the TB power output being cross linked to one of the DVI pins/connectors. But still doubtful.

  • I have a Macbook which is running Snow Leopard. I back up using time machine to an external drive. If I purchase a new Apple Macbook pro running Lion if I use the backup to this will I be able to use Leopard on the new computer

I have a Macbook running Snow Leopard which I back up to an external drive using time machine.  If I purchase a new MacBook pro and transfer backup from time maching to MacBook Pro will it also transfer Snow Leopard as its is my preferred O.S.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If the new computer did not originally ship with Snow Leopard installed, no, you will not be able to go back from Lion. Snow Leopard lacks the necessary drivers required for newer hardware.
