My 3GS currently has almost 2 GB of "other" stuff on it. Given that it is an 8 GB phone, this is problematic. In addition, performance is very sluggish over the past few months (e.g., press the phone icon and it takes 15-30 seconds before the "shutter" actually opens). So, I was going to reset to factory settings and then restore from backup.
However, when I click on "Restore iPhone..." or even "Check for Update" in iTunes, I am prompted for the location of an 'ipsw' file. I have no idea what this is or where to find it (although I can say that it was not in any of the directories suggested by a Google search). The Apple support site implies that if I just click on "Restore iPhone..." I will be off and running, but clearly this isn't the case. Any thoughts?

iOS 6.1.3OK, I have it downloaded -- thanks for the tip. The phone is not jailbroken at all. I am a very "vanilla" phone user. So, before I do this, a couple of other questions --
1. Why is this even necessary? From the Apple support site, it seems like I should just be able to click restore and I am off to the races.
2. Will this actually do the whole restore, or does it just re-install iOS 6.1.3?

Problems with updating and restoring iphone 4s
So yesterday my iphone 4s said there was an update available so I started to update it, but cancelled the update by holding the home and lock button because I wanted to update it later instead.
It then told me to connect to itunes and restore it so I did that.
After and during restoring the connect to itunes screen stayed there and when I connected it to itunes again after restoring it, it told me it was in recovery mode still and needed to be restored.
I just restored it again hoping it would work this time but the connect to itunes button was still there,
What do I do now? All my phone will show it connect to itunesConnect to iTunes. You should probably try to enter recovery mode as described here. You may have to try this more than once to succeed. Let iTunes do the update.

Hello guys..!! I have got my new iphone 4 2 days ago.The same day it got a problem of auto restart in every 1, to 2 minutes. I updated and restored it many times...but of no use... can any one help me how to solve this problem..!!
Go to Settings/General/Reset - Erase all content and settings. the connecto to iTunes and restore as a New phone. Do not restore any backup. If the problem persists you have a hardware problem. Take it to Apple for exchange.
This assumes that the phone is not hacked or jailbroken. If it is you will have to go elsewhere on the internet for help. -

My music was erased, therefore, I am trying to sync all of the music from my computer into the iPhone, but it says that I need to use the original computer/itunes in order to sync, but it is the same computer and iTunes account. The error reads: The iPhone, "Name" is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and a sync with this iTunes library? If I click "Erase and Sync," will it delete my contacts, apps, etc?

Looks like you restored your backup file to her phone. If you didn't back up your wife's phone first, then the data is gone, sorry.

That usually means the phone was hacked or jailbroken to unlock the phone and when you update the phone it locked back up again.
Only way to resolve this issue, is to find out who the orignal carrier was and have them unlock it. If you bought this from a 3rd party contact the seller and have him/her unlock it for you by contacting the phone carrier. -
IPhone 5 stuck in recovery mode and can't update and restore
Hi everyone,
I need a little advice.
I was updating my iPhone 5 to iOS 7 yesterday and during the installation/updating process something went wrong (I have no idea what!) But now it is stuck in recovery mode. I have tried and failed to get it out of recovery mode. So I decided, I'll just take the loss and restore it, losing whatever I haven't backed up.
However, when updating and restoring my device I get the some error message each time: Can't restore iphone: error 3194.
I've tried updating iTunes, even trying using iTunes on my other computer, no luck.
So I decided to book a genius bar appointment.
Will they be fit to fix it? Also if not fixable can I get a replacement phone even though it's out of warrenty? And what help or charges occur when out of warrenty?
I would really appriciate any responces!

Perhaps a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is required..
Be sure to make an appointment first...

It should have backed up automatically at the start of the update process. And you should be saving photos from your phone to your computer regularly, just like you would with any digital camera. If you were not doing this you MAY lose the photos, but if your backup at the start of the update was successful you will not. Just DO NOT sync after the update, until you have restore the backup and verified that it is OK.
What error message did you get during the update? Before you restore do the following:
Reboot your computer
Connect to a USB port on the computer directly, not a hub
disable your antivirus and firewall
Launch iTunes
Finally, connect the phone and restore. -

Mildly amusing that the instructions for force-closing a program are the IOS 6 instructions, which do not work on IOS 7.
Otherwise I'm having a little success with this. Some apps (not all) are updating. It seems that a few more apps update each time I go through the process (close everything, sign out, and either reset or reboot, then go to the app store, sign in and try to update all). So far it has been a very lengthy, iterative process. -
