Turn off data transfer?

Hi,
We have a very strict data plan in NZ. 250 MB month... I want to ensure no data can be transferred at times (esp if I reach my limit). How can I switch off all data transfer so I don't get hammered at the end of my billing month?
Thanks,
Scott

The only way for sure is to put the phone into Airplane mode, but then no phone calls either.
There is no setting to disable data only on the iPhone. All you can do is manual - don't open safari, email, maps. Maybe move those icons to a different screen and periodically check you data usage through the carrier and the iPhone settings screen.

  • Turning off data services

Hi, I was just wondering why you can't use wi-fi when you select to turn data services off. The problem is, is that for this 1 month I don't have unlimited data so need to make sure I don't spend much. Also will any services try to use the data service without user interaction? Thanks for your help

Whenever i turn data services off though it seems to also turn wi-fi off somehow.
It connects to a network however whenever i try to use anything it comes up with 'Unable to connect to the internet, please try again later.' The wi-fi diagnostics menu also says that the 'IP address no longer valid'
Whenever i turn data services back on wi-fi goes back to normal. Weird.
I have a feeling that you don't have the browser set as a Hotspot browser, then.
Even if you turn off Data Services, your Wifi Hotspot browser should work fine. I have one Bold device with no SIM even it, in which I can access and browse the internet on it via only WiFi using the Hotspot browser.

  • HT1807 I have an iPhone 3s.  How do I turn OFF data roaming?

I am traveling in Mexico.  I have an iPhone 3s.  How do I turn OFF data roaming?  Under SETTINGS I don't see Network. I don'r see it under SETTINGS/General either.

What you should do, if you don't want any nasty surprises, is put your phone in Airplane mode. That turns off all iPhone radios, but you can go back into settings & turn WiFi back on.
Do not rely on the data roaming setting to protect you.

  • Turn off Data

I have an iPhone 5c. I've never had a problem with this before, but now when I manually turn off data for my apps, for some reason Facebook, Shazaam, and Youtube turn right back on. How do I fix that?

    Hello lamawa,
It may help to force close the offending applications, then restart your iPhone.

  • Inability to turn off data -- big problem

Well...it was great to be one of the first in Australia with an iPhone as I bought mine a week ago and then immediately left on a business trip. Roaming works fine, etc.
But...and it's a big but....not being able to turn off data is problematic. I have not used safari or mail once since landing -- yet I've still chalked up data use. The fact that the phone is doing something in the background...sending out data over Telstra...is a pain. Its not a lot of money...but global data roaming rates are expensive. I should be able to turn it off...
...or give me unlimited worldwide data....
    Big shortcoming....

I have never tried this, but I question whether or not it will work. I read in an early review of the iPhone that one of the idiosyncrasies was that wifi would not work until the phone was activitated. Without the SIM card installed, the phone won't know that it is activitated -- so your plan to use wifi without the SIM card may not work.
Has anybody done this already with success?

  • Completely Turn off Data

Is there anyway to completely turn off the Data portion and still have the phone features to use? I noticed that on the Droid 2 there is an option for this, but could not find it on the Fascinate. This would probably help on the battery side of things if we could turn the Data off

I have used the app "APNDROID 2.5 beta" found at:
    http://code.google.com/p/apndroid/downloads/detail?name=apndroid-2.5beta.apk
This changes the APN names and thus stops data usage (WIFI still works).
Only the 2.5 or 3.0 versions work on CDMA phones such as the Fascinate.
This also works with the app "3G Watchdog" to turn off data usage when it reaches a certain level.

  • Is there any way to turn off data and use only wi fi

is there any way to turn off data and use only wi fi, going to a foreign country and do not want to use data but wi fi will be available. I want to be sure to use only wi fi

    Yes there is!
Simply go into Settings, General, Mobile Data, Turn this off and make sure Data Roaming is also switched off! You can have wifi on and this will no charge your account for the data you use via Wi-Fi!

  • Lg chocolate touch - how do I turn off data when traveling international?

I m going to travel international and will not be using data and don't want to get high data charges abroad, so I want to disable data before I leave and re-enable when I return. How is that done on the LG Chocolate Touch? I did not see any references to turning off data is the user manual.
    Thanks.

I understand your concern to bypass roaming charges! Please share your travel destination, so I may advise accordingly.  There is no option on your current device to simply disable/enable data.  I suggest not accessing any data, disabling any email account and subscriptions that automatically use data.  Thank you.

  • How do I turn off data on my Extrovert 2?

How do I turn off data on my Extrovert 2?  There is nothing in the settings to do this.  I am getting small data usage showing up even though I never go on the internet or access emails, and I have a pay per use data plan.  I don't really want any data plan at all, and didn't use to have one, but when I returned my defective phone, the rep who placed the order added a $10.00/month data plan, without my consent.  When I called to get it removed, the rep changed it to a "pay per use" plan.  I want things back to the way they were.  I don't want ANY data plan.  I only use the phone for calls and texts, and am not sure why small data amounts are showing up on some days, from .00001 to .00021 mg.

You should be able to log into your on-line My Verizon account (assuming you're the Account Owner) and put a data block on the line, or call Customer Service and have them do it.

  • Turning off data use?

    Hello,
I'm in the US Virgin Islands and I just received a text from AT&T saying they'll charge $20 per MB of data transfer. I'm a MobileMe user, and I was concerned that the MobileMe background communications for email and other synchronization could add up quickly, so I put my iPhone on Airplane mode.
But I'd of course, I'd like to use it as a phone! I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for the easiest way to turn off all data communications while allowing the phone to work, when the user is NOT roaming -- there is AT&T here, they just charge more for data communications than they do on the mainland.
    Thanks,
    Gary

Turning off all those things is a pain, and knowing me I'll probably forget to turn one of them on again. Moreover, if I get into range of a wifi hotspot, I'd want all those things working again; I don't really want them off, I just don't want the AT&T charges.
Apple really should make one overall button to control this.
I'm also a bit concerned that there may be something we're overlooking that could use data -- though I can't imagine what it would be. But the main issue is that it doesn't make sense to have to turn off all that functionality when I really only want it not to use the cellular network. Not being able to do that seems like a real oversight.

  • Second s5 update has made wifi and data run simutaniously, being charged for data only way to turn off Data is to go to settings. I had same issue with my other phone. Recieved two replacement phones the SIM card did not work on replacements took phone ba

Wifi and Data running simultaneously. Data was being charged to my account even though I was on WIFI. No one can fix the issue. I have wasted 8 hours of my life and went and returned my phone and got a new one yet after the last update I now have WIFI and Data showing that they are running simultaneously.  I have looked at numerous message boards and turned off Caller ID don't have Volte on my phone but do get an error with Visual Voice Mail. I don't want any of these services, you are not helping your customers Verizon or Samsung with forcing us to update. I tried not to update my NEW phone that I had to get from Costco because of this exact same stupid issue happen on my last one. But every time I said NO to update the next time I did anything on the phone the UPDATE would pop up again. I would say NO it would come back. I was doing a text and it came up and I hit update not wanting to and then my phone began updating on a low battery. I had to rush to put on charge and then my WIFI and Data came back on together with arrows on all going up and down. I HATE the lack of support I get from SAMSUNG and VERIZON... Verizon washes their hands and say these are not Updates even though these are the features we have on all our phones like Visual Voice Mail and Volte...

I did look at the Settings/Cellular to check the applications.  This is one of the steps I did with the person from Verizon who was an "iPhone Specialist".  And he didn't see anything unusual.  And I can honestly tell you they have very minimal number of apps on their phones.
When I went to the Apple Store the first time with this problem, they had me update the phones iOS systems to see if this would correct the problem.  They were each running older versions but different versions.  One son had one update to do and the other had a couple of updates needed.  So, the problem started before they were updated and they weren't even on the same update.  And nothing changed after we did the updates.
I didn't reboot the router and modem, because I'm not having any other issues with my phone, my husband's phone, our iPad, xbox, PS3, or laptops.  Would the wifi only affect their phones?

  • How to totally turn off data traffic when using ma...

    Nokia N8-00:
I only use the integrated gps and have turned off the assisted gps, net based gps and Wi-Fi/Network but when accessing maps it still generates data traffic.
Normally this is´nt a problem but when traveling abroad data traffic costs a small fortune.
In my old N95 when I downloaded offline maps and turned everything but integrated gps off there was no data traffic at all but even after the latest maps updates (i.e. yesterday) it appears that the maps still needs downloading when accessed...
Any suggestions how to completely avoid data traffic when using maps?

Set all destinations to always ask and select no whenever the phone gives you a request, set Maps to offline, and set location to just use intergrated GPS. By the way, just been to Portugal using Vodafone and data charges only about £5 for week, and they've just improved allowances, may be worth checking your service providers web site and see if it's necessary to bother about data roaming, they all tend to follow each other, and Data roaming charges in europe seem to be coming down !
