Tutorials on Text Graphics

Hi,
Anyone know of some good tutorials or sources that'll provide information on how to create good text graphics?
I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

No. But needless to say there were some interesting art in there though.
What I meant was how to create nice looking text graphics using Photoshop's Horizontal Type Tool (T).
Thanks anyway!

  • HP PhotoSmart C309g Printer no longer prints Black Text, Graphics, etc

    Hi:
    We have an HP laptop.
We have an HP PhotoSmart All-In-One C309g Wireless printer/scanner/copier.
It has been working fine for a couple of years, until 2 days ago.
It will no longer print anything in black (colors and Photo Black work fine).
We have taken it apart...removed all ink cartridges, removed the cartridge caddy,
cleaned all electrodes,  replaced the caddy, installed 5 (all) new cartridges,, etc.
We went through the process of removing the cartridges, caddy, shutting down,
removing the AC cord, waiting for several minutes, then doing the reverse process.
When we turn the printer on, it does its auto-check/install, and after about 4-5 minutes
tells us that the installation failed, the to press the OK  button.
We went thorugh this process several times, and the installation failed every time.
In the past, installing printer cartridges, cleaning, calibrating...executed quickly.
The printer will not print anything that is Black, whether it me a print from Word, Notepad,
doing a direct copy from the glass, etc....both, with the laptop On or Off, but it will not
    print anything in standard Black.
The colors and Photo Black print fine, but the regular Black does not.
The output from the other 4 cartridges are sharp, crisp, etc.
Anything... text, graphics, etc.,  in standard Black does not print.
    Any ideas.
    Thank you

  • A way to undo Formatted Text & Graphics OCR from Acrobat 7?

Over the course of a few months, my company received a large number of PDF files for a project for which the internal policy was that every file should be text searchable.  Unfortunately, we did not save the native files in any sort of convenient way, having at that time not realized that failing to do so was a very bad idea.  We ran OCR on every one of the files that we received, which total approximately 4,000.  At the time that we received the majority of these files, my company was still using Acrobat 7; we've since upgraded to version 8.
Recently we discovered that there were discrepancies between our electronic copies and the hard copy printouts from which our electronic copies had been generated:  in the electronic copies, uppercase F had changed to P, S had changed to 8, etc.  We eventually worked out that it must have been that at some point a computer was mistakenly set to run OCR using the Formatted Text & Graphics setting, as opposed to either Searchable Image or Searchable Image (Exact).  This was absolutely not want we wanted, as for our purposes using a type of OCR that causes the original images to change essentially renders the files useless.  My questions, then, are the following:
    1)  As I asked in the title, is there any way of undoing Formatted Text & Graphics OCR that was performed in Acrobat 7?
    2)  Is there a way of identifying files that have had Formatted Tex & Graphics OCR performed on them (something stored in the metadata)?
Rebuilding these files from scratch is going to require a gargantuan effort, so any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
Bernd's been across the mountain and seen the bear; so, you can bank on what he posted.
But, just because, I'll second his "no".
Formatted Text and Graphics (Acrobat 7, 8) and ClearScan (Acrobat 9, X) effectively replace the image of textual characters.
If a character is not recognized as 'something' a bit map is of the thing is left behind.
Now, while Acrobat or other OCR engines (Abbey FineReader, AdLib, Adobe Capture, etc.) are really rather impressive no OCR engine has 100% accuracy 100% of the time. Other variables  come into play (scan lamp age/brightness, platen cleanliness, scanner mechanicals cleanliness, calibration of scanner, hard copy 'quality' (characters' darkness density, contrast between characters and background, presence of lack thereof of boxed in text, text in or adjacent to line arcs/circles, etc.).
All of that is for semantic content that is "textual". Semantic content that is not textual (but, coincidently may contain text) provides little to no useful OCR output (e.g., graphs, drawings, etc.). Validate this by performing OCR on such a PDF then Export to a plain text file. Print this file out and compare that to the source paper or the scanned image.
There is no metadata info that identifies the OCR mode used.
Perhaps something buried in the bowls of PDF page description content; if so, not intrinsically easy to obtain.
My suggestion (fwiw) - move forward with re-scan.
A server product would help to move it along but a high speed scanner hooked to a local machine (with ample resources) and Acrobat Pro 8 or 9 get it done. With Acrobat 8 or 9 use Search Image (Exact).  In Preferences check the category Create PDF or TIFF to assure it is what you desire. Check Acrobat's scan presets to assure you have what you want vis-a-vis Compression and Filtering. Do avoid "Automatic".
    Be well...

  • COMBINED TEXT & GRAPHICS QUALITY

I'm looking at buying a high-end colour laser like the Xerox 7750 or Ricoh 7200. I've got a few questions about colour lasers in general (see my other recent posts). Feel free to offer any comments about:
    COMBINED TEXT & GRAPHICS QUALITY
My HP scanner has options that optimise the scanning quality for text, graphics or both. ie it appears there is no one setting that scans a mixed page at the best quality. I've noticed on reading printer manuals that some also offer different print settings for graphics and text. Do colour lasers print text in an inferior way if there are graphics on the same page; and vice versa? Or should text quality (and graphics) stay the same no matter what else is on the page? Assume the text is sent to the printer as actual text (not rasterised in the application).
In the Ricoh 7200 manual it states: "If text & graphics are blurred, select Text Priority under Graphic Mode from the Maintenance menu and then print."
There is no more explanation, but when I saw that I immediately thought: if I select Text Priority is text quality somehow improved at the expense of graphics quality? Do lasers have this limitation?
Thanks in advance for any comments.

Import the TIFF into a pdf, you can use the Text Recognition tool page by page. Personally, I prefer for a job like your to use a dedicated OCR program that lets me designate which parts of the page should be considered graphics and which are text that needs to be OCRd.

  • Copying a Text Graphic

    Hello,
I just picked up on a Flash project at work from our previous web designer who has since left the company and I know nothing about Flash so I am going to try my best to explain my problem.
The client has requested some information be added to one of the sections of the web page which would involve a vertical scroll bar because it can not all fit in the pre-determined area for text. It will be added under jobs. Under the legal section the text runs outside of the area and has a scroll bar effect applied to it. Can I copy the legal text graphic, delete the old jobs text graphic, place the job text in the copied legal text graphic and then name it as the like the original text graphic that I deleted and have it all work without any problems?
This might be a little bit hard to understand so I included a picture to show you maybe what I am talking about?
    thanks
    garrett

I am not clear on what you have in front of you, but if the text is a graphic of text, then you should be able to directly replace that graphic with a new graphic in whatever object is holding it.
If that section only holds text, you may find it is a textarea that has a scrollbar enabled for it, wherein the text is likely defined in the actionscript code (which means you could edit the text... a graphic isn't involved).
What I recommend is that you make a copy of the file so that an original is retained.  Use the copy to experiment with making changes.

  • Text & Graphic from Print Module

I bought Lightroom to help grow my Events business, we print on the night, we have an Awards night to shoot soon.
We would like to have a graphic (Logo) and Text naming the type of Award.
Would somebody please help and explain how to achieve this.
As I understand how the Print Module works, It's one or the other. I know that I could use the Watermark function to add the text, but this would be OVER the image.
Is there a way to design the template then import to LR? I cannot see a way in PS!
Any help or advice would be great .
    Thanks.

I could see that being useful too.  As it may not make the final release, and we wouldn't want the request to get lost in beta land, might I suggest adding it as a suggestion on the Feature Request forum http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family where it can easily be tracked?  If you post the link to your request here, others can also vote on your request.  If you search there, you may even find similar requests that you might like to add your vote to.

  • Aligning text & graphics

I have text, often with a graphic, often in a table (imported
from Word document) that either does not appear positioned
correctly or is numbered wrong or both.
When I remove the numbering (from the toolbar), the text
repositions into the left margin and I lose the formatting.
Clicking TAB does not work. Changing the text to Normal does not
    work.
BTW, most of the text is InlineNormal types. Even changing it
to Normal or removing the tag in the code does not seem to allow
proper numbering. The numbering does not show in the Design view.
Preview shows the sentence numbered, but it is the wrong numbering.
I seem to remember that all text in Word documents should be Body,
not Normal, before importing the document.

Best practice for lists in RH:
    1. Assign Normal to all list elements.
    2. Select all list elements.
    3. Click the
Create a Numbered List button in the RH toolbar.
    4. If you have any elements that should not be numbered, go
into TrueCode and remove the LI tag from the element; also, remove
the ending OL tag before that element and the new OL tag after that
    element.
If you need to come back and make significant changes to this
list at a later date, it's probably simpler to undo the entire
list, add/change/remove appropriate elements, and start over at
    Step 1.
    Good luck,
    Leon

  • Black text/graphics in PDF print grey

    Hello,
what follows is completely beginners question. I'm not even sure I'm in a right place, so my apologies (if I'm not).
I have created a little flyer in Corel Draw. It is very simple and basically contains some black text, small black outlined object and dark blue frame. It prints from Corel to my B/W home laser as it should - black text and object are solid black when printed. However, when I convert to PDF (from Corel's publish PDF option) and try printing PDF file on same printer, black text and object come out dark grey on paper.
So I took my PDF file to a friend. He's office has decent equipment and software for some reason, but they are not into graphics business so hardly an experts as well. First we tried printing PDF file to Canon iR2270 B/W network laser and on Brother HL-4200CN colour network laser and result was same - black elements in PDF print dark grey. Then we opened PDF in Adobe Illustrator CS2 and tried printing from there - and everything printed fine, black was sharp, solid black. But when we re-created PDF from Illustrator and tried printing it from Acrobat, we had same problem.
We tried some other ideas - created new document in Illustrator, printed it fine (from Illustrator), converted to PDF (both saving it as PDF and "printing" it to PDF file as there is Acrobat 7 installed as well) and whatever we did, PDF printout had grey instead of solid black. We also tried different PDF print profiles - standard, HQ, press... same issue.
Document is created as CMYK, and both in Corel and Illustrator black elements are 100% black, with CMY values set to 0%.
As it was tried in different environments with same results, I'm sure there's nothing wrong with software/drivers/hardware, but I'm missing some simple option in settings/preferences.
Does any of this make any sence to you guys? Anyone has idea what am I doing wrong..?

Ruud S. has the solution that worked for me.
"To get nice black colors they create a black just to overlap all the other colors. C 100% M 100% Y 100% K 100%"
Make a new swatch of black with ALL of the colors set to 100%, not just the black.
I have been testing this on a Brother HL-2070N printer but I've also run into these documents causing problems on our work copier (Xerox Workcenter Pro 275), though less frequently with the Xerox copier. It seems like a lot of people are having this problem with Brother printers so it might be something they are especially prone to. I don't know what program they were created in originally since they're a customer's file but I edited all of the black colors in Illustrator and it's printing fine now.
The files were originally PDF files that were 5 pages long. I've been opening up each page in Illustrator to change the colors and to make the requested changes. After I've changed each page, I create a new PDF by combining the 5 individual pages to get my packet.

  • MISSING TEXT/GRAPHICS WHEN CREATING PDF

    Hello ...
When I convert FrameMaker files to PDF, text and graphics are missing in the pdf. Sometimes this happens, sometimes not - the pattern seems to be whenever I am working with a large file (1MB or more)or if I have several windows open.
My temporary work-around is to save the document into PDF 2-5 pages at a time ... but with a 100-page document this becomes very tedious and time-consuming.
I have 55GB of free space and 2GB of RAM.
Does anyone know why this might be happening?
I am using Adobe Acrobat 8.0 with Windows XP.
    Thank you,
    Tina

    Hi Mike ...
Yes, the graphics are imported by reference.
But when generating a pdf multiple times from the same file - it's not always the same result. The first attempt may result in some graphics and text not appearing (only several pages may be affected). The second attempt will result in different pages being affected.
It's not consistent - which really doesn't make sense.
I have a feeling it's something quirky with my computer - but I wanted to check the forum in case this is a problem with Acrobat 8.0 -before I complain to our IT Dept.

  • Combined text/graphics OCR problem

    Hi.
I need to convert a dozen of manuals from tiff to (editable) Word files. Each tiff file is one manual consisting about 50 pages.
There are graphics on some pages with words and/or numbers in it (technical schemes).
When I open them in Adobe Acrobat Pro and convert/save it to Word using OCR, the schemes are getting messed up because of the OCR.
How can I let it use OCR on the text pages only and leave the graphics as they are?

Import the TIFF into a pdf, you can use the Text Recognition tool page by page. Personally, I prefer for a job like your to use a dedicated OCR program that lets me designate which parts of the page should be considered graphics and which are text that needs to be OCRd.

  • Appleworks6 (drawing - text & graphics) to be converted - how?

I have a lot of mathematics worksheets, produced on Appleworks6 (on the drawing package with text and graphics) over the years. The new OS will not support Rosetta, I understand, and so I need to transfer (translate?) all the worksheets into a more modern format, available to both Mac and PC users. How do I do this and what applications are now available which will be suitable? If I try Word:mac (11.6.3) it tells me the Appleworks6 drawing document is not the right file type.

If it were an AW6 text document with inserted graphics, then Pages would probably open it.
However, as a drawing document with text added that may not work. It is possible that Keynote might be able to open it.
Edit - - nope - just tried it with Keyboate, won't do it.
Just played with AW6 a bit. If these documents are static docs, meaning ones which do not need to be changed or otherwise addressed except viewed, there's other choices. One I tried just now in AW6, ws to do a Save As and change the format to JPEG.
This resulted in a document that should be openable by most anyone. In OS X, it opens in Preview automatically, but should be able to be opened in any app that can open JPEG files.
In Pages it got a bit trickier - Pages would not open it directly, not even via Open in File menu. But, when I treated it as a regular JPEG it worked: I opened a blank text doc in Pages, then drag-and-dropped the JPEG file into it. That worked - gave me a Pages doc with an inserted image of the original AW6 graphics file.

  • Missing loaded text/graphics icon & Panles won't stay open

    Hello,
I've just upgraded from InDesign CS2 to CS3 and notice that, when I come to place text from another application, the text icon is invisible. I can see its position approximately by observing the rulers, but it's very frustrating not to be able to see the icon to place text accurately on my page. Also, when I come to 're-load' the icon at the end of a column to place the continiung text elsewhere, the loaded icon is invisible, here too!
Also, I've docked my selected panels to the right of the screen as I had them on CS2. However, I used to be able to keep a panel open before selecting anything on the page. For example, the swatches for changing the colour of text in several places on a page. Now, I have to click an item or select the text first, THEN open the panel each and evey time. Clicking anywhere on the page without selecting anything automatically closed the panel - something that did not happen on CS2. Both of the above make working very arduous.
Is it me, or is there some setting that's different for these problems with CS3 that was different with the previous version?
    Any help gratefully recieved.
    Chris Cattrall

Peter - many thanks for your reply. I discovered that the problem was in General Preferences. There is a check box to automatically close panels which, unchecked, allows them to remain open. The other problem was a check box that allowed placed text or graphics to be positioned as a 'thumbnail'. Turning this off brings back the familiar icons for this function.
Anyway, many thanks again for your help.
    Chris

  • Conditional text & graphic

Using FM 9.0 p250, I have an anchored frame on a master page which I've made conditional.  It's got some text and a graphic in it.  When I'm viewing the master page, I can show or hide it just fine.  But when I move it over to the "show" side, it shows on my master page, but not on my body page.  What am I doing wrong?

You can create two kinds of text frames on body pages, master pages, and in anchored frames.
    * A "tagged" text frame displays "Flow: A" or some other letter in the tag information area at the left end of the document page's status bar that's at the bottom of the page, when you click a text insertion pointer in it.
    * An "untagged" text frame does not display a flow name.
    * On a body page, text frames can be placed on the page, or inside other frames. When either kind of text frame is pasted from the clipboard with an insertion point in a text frame, an anchored frame is created, and the pasted frame appears inside the anchored frame. On body pages, both kinds of text frames act as you'd expect - text in them appears in them, is editable, and can be shown/hidden by manipulating conditions.
    * On a master page, things are very different:
    - A tagged text frame (Flow: A, etc.) is considered to be a template (model) that creates a duplicate text frame - same size, same location, same color, etc. - on the body page that's controlled by that master page. This us the usual way that the "live typing areas" are created on FrameMaker body pages - a template text frame on a master page controls it.
    - Tagged text frames on master pages are templates for body pages; they do not display their content on body pages; they only create a same-size frame in the same position on the body page. (Try it and repeat this mantra until you get it.)
    - Untagged text frames on master pages are not editable on body pages; they are backgrounds that appear on the body pages controlled by the master page. (Try it and repeat until it sinks in.)
Your master page text frame is probably a template (Flow: A) text frame; it appears on the body page with a live typing area, but it does not display its content - text, table, anchored frame, etc. This property makes it easy to store documentation in the master page template text frame so it's always carried with the document; however, it's not helpful to users who don't know how to display master pages. The condition setting show/hide makes no difference in this situation; the conditionalized text in the tagged master page text frame doesn't appear on the body page controlled by the master.
One other possibility is that you created the frame on a master page that's not used on the body page(s) you're viewing. For example, the master page text frame may be on the Left master page of a double-sided document, and you've only got one body page so far, page 1, which by default uses the Right master page.
When you create a text frame on a master page, FrameMaker displays an alert that asks you to choose whether the new frame should be background - they show on the body pages and are typically used for headers and footers, etc. - or template, and if template, you can specify a Flow label like "A" or "ChapterOpener," to identify it. You can also specify Autoconnect, the property that causes new pages to be created when you type past the end of an autoconnected tagged frame on body pages.
Read more about master pages, tagged text frames, background text frames, template text frames, headers and footers, flow tags, and autoconnect in Help, and in Google searches that include FrameMaker in the term.
