Are they daisy chained? Have you tried them one at a time? Have you tried a different FireWire cable? Do they show up in either system profiler or Disk Utility? Have you reset the SMC? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

I'm facing a bit of a problem.
Any folder I copy from my Macbook Pro to my External Hard Disk does NOT appear on any other device that I connect the Hard Disk to (TV, PC, etc).
The Hard disk format is "MS-DOS (FAT)".
The folders that are copied from Macbook appear when I connect the Hard Disk to my Macbook only, yet, the folders that I copy from a PC to the Hard Disk appear on Macbook, PC, and TV and are also available from editing from both Mac and PC.
I was advised to install "Paragon" software and I did but I'm not sure how to use it to convert the folders on the hard drive to any format that can be read on other drives or devices (NTFS or otherwise).
I'd appreciate some help. Thank you.

Hi Simon. How is it formatted, FAT or NTFS?
I only ask as OSX will only read NTFS partitions unless you install an App such as Paragon NTFS or Tuxera NTFS.

I have this setup in my exchange environment.
1 DAG with 2 members
- One member is located in Head Office and the other member is located in DR site. All of the mailbox databases are located only in HO (Plan to add additional second member in HO soon). Now what is the proper way to install windows patches on the
member in HO? I don't want to move the databases to DR site as much as possible.

Hi,
To update the DAG members with new patches, the update process should be managed to prevent all of the DAG members from being offline at the same time.
To do this, I recommend you move the active mailbox databases off a particular server so that it can be patched, and if necessary rebooted, without causing any downtime for mailbox users on that database.

External hard disk does not show in finder

WD usb external hard disk does not appear in finder. Disk utility sees it and will mount/unmount and eject. I ran repair disk util. and all is well but still does not appear in finder

Hey Hatter, Thanx for the input.
Among other things I tried was a terminal routine someone suggested with no luck and new drivers/firmware for the drive, again, no luck.
I still don't know for sure what caused my problem, but I re-partitioned the drive and re-formatted it and that seemed to solve the provlem. Sadly, I lost all my info that was backed up on that particular drive but hopefully it won't come back to bite me later.

External Hard Drive does not appear in finder

We purchased a 1 TB G Drive Q from the Apple Store. It is connected to my wife's iMac running the most current update of Leopard by 800 firewire and appears on her desktop and works flawlessly with time machine. I am connected to the same drive intermittently with my MacBookPro also running the most current update of Leopard. i connect with 400 firewire. Initially the drive would not appear in the finder. for the initial backup, i turned the hard drive off and on and then it would appear and i did the backup but now when i connect to the 400 firewire port, it still doesn't appear in the finder. i would much prefer not to need to turn my back up drive off and on each time i want to use time machine. i should also mention that when i connect any of my garmin training devices or my power meter by USB it is recognized very quickly as a device in finder. any ideas? i understand this may be one of the problems fixed with SnowLeopard. thanks.

I am not sure what you are attempting to do. I assume that you are not trying to connect two computers to the same external drive at the same time. That will definitely be problematic. In order to effectively use Time Machine with two Macs, you should partition the drive into two partitions. Also make sure that the drive is using a GUID partition scheme.

External Hard Drive Will Not Appear

I have a western digital external HD which I bought last year. I have used it to store movies and back ups transferring by usb. Last week I tried connecting again and now the HD icon does not appear on my desktop. I have tried several times and in different ways (ie. powering up before connecting, after connecting etc) but nothing has worked. From reading other posts I may have disconnected improperly last time but am not sure.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem?

Turn On "Show Hard Disks"

Kevin - There might be a few reasons as to why your external drive won't appear have you tried any of these suggestions:-
STEP ONE - Confirm that the drive is being seen by the system
Click the Apple icon and select About This Mac.
Click More Info.
Select the Drives and Volumes tab.
If the Iomega Hard Disk drive is not listed under the USB/FireWire arrow, proceed to STEP THREE.
If the Hard Disk drive is listed, continue with the next step.
STEP TWO - Format the Hard Disk drive to Mac HFS format
The Iomega Hard Disk drive is factory formatted to FAT32 for maximum compatibility. If you have not reformatted the disk or the disk is formatted to FAT32:
The disk may mount very slowly in OS X if the disk is FAT32 formatted.
Mac OS X will not mount any DOS (FAT32) partition larger than 128GB. For more information, please check the Apple® Web site at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107483
Warning: Erasing your Hard Disk drive will erase all of the information stored on the disk. If possible, back up your data before erasing the hard drive. Double-click the Mac hard drive icon.
Double-click the Applications folder.
Double-click the Utilities folder.
Double-click the Disk Utilities icon.
Highlight the drive in the left window.

If the Hard Disk drive now mounts, you are ready to use the drive.

Finder & Dock do not work - Mac Hard Drive does not appear on Desktop

Until yesterday, my powerbook was working properly.
This morning, I wanted to use it and I had the following problems after login.
1/ My Mac Hard drive does not appear on my dekstop
2/ My dock appears but no icon works when I click on them. So, I can't open finder. I have no response.
3/ Furthermore, my top bar (with clock, login name, Airport icon...) appears but it is frozed.
I try several solutions as :
- rebooting in safe mode,
- rebooting, with in the same time, hold different keys (option, apple, p & R)...
As of today, no solution works.

Ok, that's good enough. You may be able to repair this with the 10.5.8 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

Also, your getting very low on disk space. Try to copy some of the data off to other media. *Do it before you try applying the combo, you'll need the space.*

IMac external hard drive will not show up on desktop

I have an external 60 GB hard drive that is attached to an IMac.
I used to be to access this hard drive, but now the IMac will not see it and it does not appear on the desktop anymore. I have another Mac computer and have hooked this hard drive up to it, and it shows up just fine on this other computer's desktop, so I know the hard drive should be working.
What should I try doing to get this hard drive show up on the IMac?

Backing up to two external hard drives

I have two external hard drives - a LaCie FireWire (my first purchase) and a small Targus USB (used while travelling). Backup software is Silverkeeper. I used the LaCie exclusively for about six months with no problems. The initial backup was lengthy but subsequent backups were much quicker, since it was merely an updating process.
The LaCie stayed at home and the Targus was used for four months. It performed in exactly the same manner.....lengthy on initial backup but quicker on subsequent backups.
What happens now is that every time I try to do a backup, alternating between the two hard drives, the software indicates that no backup has ever been performed and I must start from "scratch". In addition, I get a window telling me that if I want to create a bootable back-up, the destination volume must be totally blank. (I do realize that only the FireWire drive can be a bootable copy).
I am totally baffled. Any suggestions?

Whilst I totally recommend SuperDuper!, and use it myself, be aware that the more advanced features like the fast Smart Backups and scheduling are only available from the full (registered version). The free version will only do a full and complete clone.
That said I think SD! is well worth the asking price and definitely my primary choice.

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

I have two external hard drives I use with Time Machine. One is for constant backup and the other I keep off-site and back up weekly.
Problem: Each time I connect a different hard drive it wants to start from scratch and create another new backup file. What I want is called smart copy in Superduper! but can't figure out how to do it on Time Machine

Look in the Utility folder which is located inside the Applications folder.
You don't want to do anything with the disk on a PC if you want it to work on the Mac. They both use different formats.
