Two machines saving the same file as different sizes?

My coworker and I both have the same version of Illustratir (CS6) and both use Lion on iMacs, but today noticed something weird. He saved a file similar to a file I had done before as both an eps and a pdf and his file size was more than twice what my file sizes usually are. I thought it was odd, so I copied everything from his file into a new file (same dimensions) and saved out an eps and pdf (default settings), and like I thought, my files were less than half the size of his.
Why would two machines be saving identical files at different sizes? Is there a setting somewhere I'm missing? Everything in the file is vector, if it matters. There's not even any editable text.

See the mechanism of saving here: http://superuser.com/questions/66825/what-is-the-difference-between-size-and-size-on-disk
The size of the "blocks" depends on the size of the disk and how it's been formatted.

  • Two users opened the same file at the same time with file on Win2K Server

I just had a problem with a file that could not be saved. After a little investigation I discovered that two users had the same file open at the same time. This is with both users using InDesign CS2 and saving to a Windows 2000 Server. Any ideas how this even happened? The only thing I can think of is if they both opened the file at the exact same time but even that I doubt. I guess the more likely possibility is that the user on 10.5 (which we have had a lot of problems with, it's hard to tell how many of them are CS3 problems (yes CS3) and how many are Windows 2003 Server problems) had InDesign CS2 flake out and not tell her the file was open. Has anybody else seen this? The other user was using 10.4. Both computers have the most recent updates for the OS and for their various adobe products.

I have videos on mov file and my quick time player does not play them.
The MOV file container is the generic QT file container. Any audio and video data compatible with the computer system used to create the file can be placed in the MOV file container. Unfortunate, other systems cannot play the file unless they too are configured with the same components as those used to create the file. The normal procedure here is to use the Finder "Info" or alternative media play "Inspector" window to determine what codecs were used to create the original file and, if they are available for your Mac, install them on your system for playback use. Also be advised that some "legacy" codecs may require playback in the QT 7 Player for proper QT support.
I opened with other players, there is no sound. Then I opened the same file on my windows 7, it plays perfectly with the sound and everything? What is the problem?
This would indicate these players either access your QT codec component configuration which does not include the required codec or the app has its own built-in codec support which does not include the required audio codec but you Windows 7 media player is configured with the required codec support. This may incidate the use of a really old codecs that may or may not be available/supported on a Mac any longer.

  • Backup two machines to the same USB HD

I have two M90p machines each has Rescue and Recovery 4.52 installed. I have a 1TB USB drive and I want to back up both machines to the same drive. I noticed that when I backup one machine the backup is stored in RRbackups. If I try to backup the other machine will it be stored in the same directory?

The structure of the RNR backup folder is as follows:
     RRbackups\SZ\*UUID of your machine*\**folders**.
UUID is the  universally unique  identifier.  Each machine has a different UUID. (stored in BIOS).
This allows multiple machines to backup to the same External HDD.
Your folder would look like this:
    RRbackups\SZ\*UUID  machine 1*\**folders**.
                             \*UUID  machine 2*\**folders**.
    ====
How to view the \rrbackups folder.
go to control panel>folder options>view.  Make sure the show hidden files button is marked.
Also uncheck the Hide protected operating system files.  APPLY. You will get a POP up warning message.
\RRbackups is BOTH a hidden file and a protected operating system file.
\programdata appears to be Hidden, but NOT a protected operating system file.   This is just FYI.
Then look for folder \RRbackups. You should have 1 on the C drive, and 1 on the USB.
Your backups should be in D:\RRbackups\SZ\your uid\C     folder.
    D:\RRbackups\SZ\your uid\C\0 is  base , D: \RRbackups\SZ\your uid\C\1 is  incremental 1.
If you try to peek in the folder, and  get  "access is denied", you will have to change windows security on the folder to allow you access to it. Otherwise PROPERTIES of the folder will show 0 bytes.
    Windows security:
Right click the \RRbackups folder, PROPERTIES. Select the Security tab.
You will get a do you want to continue message? Continue.
You will see an entry for SYSTEM. Select the add button.
    Enter object name field.
Just type USERS in the field. Apply.
You will now see the default access for users on the machine.
    Apply. OK. OK.
    Done.
You may want to UNDO the above if you want the folder back to ACCESS denied. Just go back thru secuity tab and remove group USERS.  ** Leave SYSTEM group alone

  • Get Info sees different "Open With" for the same file on different computer

I've got a laptop (17") and a desktop, both with OSX 10.4.3. I had a disk problem with the laptop, but was able to get everything off the disk, reformat it, and put it all back. Everything's been working fine until today, when I tried to use the Equation Editor in Office. It wouldn't work. As I tried to chase down the problem, including reinstalling Office, I realized that my laptop was seeing certain Office files using GetInfo as "Open With" Netscape. I compared this with the settings on the desktop, and they were different. Different applications, different icons, even.
Then I noticed that when I have the CD in the laptop and do GetInfo on a file there, or even look at the icon, it's different from what appears when I look at the same file on the desktop. So it appears to be an OSX issue, not a Microsoft issue.
I've rebuilt permissions several times. I changed the OpenWith settings, but that didn't solve the problem. But I think it's because other Office files are being misread by the OS, too.
If anyone has a diagnosis (and hopefully, a cure), I'd really appreciate it.

    Hi, Jim.
You wrote: " I realized that my laptop was seeing certain Office files using GetInfo as "Open With" Netscape."If you are seeing more than just Office documents displaying the incorrect default application, this could indicate a corrupted Launch Services cache or preferences on the affected Mac.
In associating documents with applications, Finder employs Launch Services. Launch Services employs several files to associate documents with applications and vice versa. When these files become corrupted, this can result in problems including:
    - The wrong applications being launched when double-clicking a file.
    - Multiple copies of a single application appearing in the Open With menu for a given document.
    - Incorrect icons appearing on files, folders, or other objects.
The following steps will remove all of the files used by Launch Services. Be sure to read these instructions entirely, including the Notes, before proceeding.
    1. Quit all running applications.
    2. Trash the following two files in the Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Caches folder:
    - com.apple.LaunchServices-0140.csstore
    - com.apple.LaunchServices-014xxx.csstore
where xxx is the uid number for the affected account in the NetInfo database. Type your Admin password when prompted to authenticate the deletion of the first file. See Notes [1] and [2].
    3. Trash the com.apple.LaunchServices.plist file in your Home > Library > Preferences folder. See Note [3].
    4. Restart your Mac.
    5. Log in to your account.
    6. Empty the Trash.
Do not empty the Trash until after you have restarted your Mac.
    Notes:
[1] Step 2 will result in you being prompted to approve the launch of the application associated with a document the first time you double-click a document. These alerts are a result of the security feature in Mac OS X. The list of applications which you have previously approved are saved in the caches deleted in step 2.
[2] The first user account defined on your Mac is generally uid 501, the second uid 502, and so forth. For example, the second file ID for the first account would becom.apple.LaunchServices-014501.csstoreYou can find the uid number for any account as follows:1. Launch NetInfo Manager, which is in the Computer > Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder.
    2. Select users in the middle column of the NetInfo Manager window.
    3. Select the desired user account in the right column of NetInfo Manager.
    4. The data for the selected user, including uid, is displayed in the lower pane of the NetInfo Manager window.[3] Step 3 will reset to default values all associations you have created between specific file types and applications. For example, if you set PDFs to open in Adobe Acrobat instead of Preview, they would now open in Preview again until the association of PDFs with Acrobat is reset. You may want to skip step 3 to see if the other steps resolve the problem. However, if skipping step 3 does not resolve the problem, running steps 1-6 again, including step 3, should resolve the problem.

  • Two dreamweavers accessing the same files

I have two desktops, one with client files on its hard drive
and shared. The other is mapped to that hard drive and uses the
same drive letter. Both machines have Dreamweaver on them. When one
desktop opens a job and builds pages, the other can also (at a
different time of course) open the same file and make edits. At
times, one of these machines will come back to a file, and its all
screwed up. I thought it might have something to do with the latest
version of Plugin Labs menu extension, but now I'm thinking it has
something to do with Dreamweaver's handling of the files. Has
anybody else experienced problems in a similar situation. I find
myself constantly backing up entire site files to a zip folder just
in case everything blows up when I open it. Problem is, sometimes
one files is screwed up, and it overwrites the backed up
    one....can't win for trying sometimes.

I do this ALL the time, and have never experienced your issue
    (Vista and
    XPPro - files on XPPro).
I would also not touch anything from Plugin Labs.

  • How can one share iTunes Library across two machines at the same time?

**I have setup 1 of 2 machines to host all the songs in my iTunes library. I then went to machine 2 of 2 and held down option key on start up of iTUnes, changed the location of the liobrary on machine 2 to a shared folder on machine 1.**
**This works awesome and I can use itunes on each of the machines 1 and 2 with no duplicate library in my home.**
**Problem: I can only run one machine at a time. I can not run itunes on both machines at the same time. The error message from machine 2 is ITUNES library is locked and cant write to the folder. iTunes works correct if I QUIT iTunes on machine 1.**

  • WS-SDK Scheduling two instances of the same report with different params

I'm using the web services SDK for Business Objects XI 3.1 SP 2 to schedule reports. I've got it so that I can successful schedule a report with prompts, setting the value for the prompt and running the report.
However, I'm now trying to schedule two instances of the same report using a single call to BIPlatform.Schedule. It creates the correct number of new instances, the last of which is completely correct. The first one (and in fact if I do more than two all the rest except the last) lose the parameter value from the prompt and the schedule information and the type. So for example if I schedule two instances, both PDF, both for 8am tomorrow with parameters of 1 and 2, I get:
A Webi instance, scheduled to run immediately with no parameters specified and
A PDF instance, scheduled for 8am tomorrow with parameter 2
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
    Cheers,
    Jack

Can you possibly post your code here that sets params and schedules? Also as you schedule 2 instances on a single report in a sinlgle biplatform.schedule call(): as you query for InfoObject what you actually query for a single report isn't it, or do you schedule a report template and reschdule it previous instance?

  • Same file is different sizes on differently formatted external HDDs

First question: I have two external drives; one is formatted for MS-DOS File System (FAT32) and the other is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). When I copy a folder from the DOS drive to the OS X drive, the folder is a different size on the two drives. Is this normal? Is there any chance that some of the data is missing or corrupted? If it's normal. is there a way to calculate what the difference should be so I can feel comfortable erasing the DOS drive once I've transferred everything off it.
Second (sort-of related) question: if I don't care to use my external drive with a Windows PC, what is the BEST format for the drive? Why? If I do want to use the drive with a Windows PC, what is the best format? Why?
Thanks so much wonderful and helpful other Mac users!

Hello! The different file sizes are normal in my experience. If you want to use it with both MSDOS is the only way but if Mac only the Mac HFS+ JOurnaled is best. Tom

  • Two hard drives with exact same files showing different sizes

I have two WD external drives, one which I'm trying to dedicate solely to Time Machine backups.  In transferring data from the one I intend to use for that purpose to the other, I'm finding that all the files transferred but that the folders register as having different sizes (e.g. one video folder has the same number in each, but on the original disk it was 4.43 GB in total and is only 4.26 GB on the new disk).
I've read that there could be hidden system files that didn't move, but if that's the case does it matter?  Both drives are the same model but are differently formatted.
    Thanks

    but are differently formatted.
That could be the cause. Files are not written to a disk in bytes, they are written in blocks that are a minimum size. For instance, if the minimum block size is 1KB, the a 5 byte file will occupy 1KB on the disk. So, depending on the block size of the drive format, you may get different results.

  • How to work on the same project on two machines at the same time and also exchange progress seamlessly using Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014?

We are working on a film project on Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014. Two editors are working on the same film project (same pproj file ) on two machines. As a result the bin structure and the file structure is exactly the same. We even bought two licenses for the respective machines to make matters simple (at least we thought it would).
Now when we share a sequence between the two machines, every time we have to import and re-link media. Also each sequence import comes with its own set of files, which are actually already present in the project. Basically the new sequences are looking to re-link the media to the original/ source files only and are completely ignoring the file structure present in the project.
In all editing softwares, timeline/ sequence sharing is a very common practise when working on multiple machines. Why is it so tedious in CC 2014? Every time we share a sequence between the two machines the media gets doubled and tripled in the project. As a result the project file size is increasing perpetually. Already Premiere CC 2014 is extremely laggy and slow, and this stupid bug is making it more difficult for us to finish our work on time.
Has anybody ever faced this issue? How do we solve it? We are willing to try out any workflow that you can suggest.

Concurrently working on the same project it requires a specific implementation in all editing programs like Avid's Unity/ ISIS shared storage. That's what you are simply not considering. none of your issues would be any problem if your projects resided on a commonly accessed server or something like that. Check respective hardware solutions.

  • Two Ipods using the same PC want different Music Librarys

I recently bought an Ipod for me and my roommate. We Have one PC that we use for Itunes. We have two different accounts for Itunes but when I switch accounts it's the same music library. If my roommate wants to plug in her Ipod and access her own music library on the same PC, how do I go about doing that? In other words, when she plugs her Ipod in, how do I avoid having my library uploaded to her Ipod?

There are a couple of ways to do this.
Here is an article from the apple support website that might help.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300432
method 1 works if you do not mind multiple logins
    method 2 is the easiest.
method 3 works if you do not mind restarting itunes.
    Hope this helps.

  • I would like to know how to selectively merge bookmarks on two machines on the same network please

Over time, my desktop and notebook computer bookmarks have diverged. I would like to be able to merge them so they are both the same again, choosing entries from each machine as appropriate. With IE I used to use a directory/file comparison tool, but I undertand FF uses a database and haven't found out how to do it.

  • Using TWO iTunes at the same time on different monitors on Mac Pro:

Here is what I want to do:
I want to use a Mac Pro with two displays to play videos from iTunes in full screen mode on the second display while simultaneously playing music not associated with the videos on the main display.
Is this possible or do I have to get a completely separte application to play the videos on the second monitor?

I don't know of any way to get iTunes to play two different things at once, nor to get two instances of iTunes to launch at the same time. So I think you'll have to play either the music or the videos with another app.

  • Aperture in two machines sharing the same library... possible?

I want to have one library which I could share between two machines (Ive got an iMac and a MBP). But I'd like to keep the library in iMac and access it on MBP over the network. I don't need use it simultaneously, but I don't want to use an external drive for it either... Any ideas? Thanks

    Ian, and others,
I am maintaining multiple boot volumes on my Mac Pro, with the primary ones being one for Tiger and one for Leopard. At the moment I am separately maintaining Photoshop CS3 and Final Cut Studio on each of those. I have recently installed Aperture on that Leopard boot. I now plan to establish another Leopard boot (using a WD 750 GB drive), primarily for the pro apps such as PS CS3, Aperture and Final Cut Studio 2 (an upgrade) while maintaining FCS 1 on the other boot drive. With FCP, the projects and voluminous files are of course maintained on drives other than the boot volumes, and thus FCP, for example, can use those files whether I am in the Tiger boot, or the Leopard boot.
I have been wanting to fire up Aperture while in the Tiger boot, to test some odd printing behavior, but don't want to create another Aperture Library (which is not yet populated to any real extent) just to do the test. Also, I would like to administer the Aperture Library from the planned new Leopard boot, but not create separate libraries if I should wish to use Aperture while in other boot volumes.
It seems clear (but I could be wrong) that this can be done, but is it advisable? Practical? Obviously, with the separate boots, I would never be using Aperture from but one "computer".
    Ernie
