Two Major Regressions from Photoshop 6.0 to CS3

Hello,
I'm trying to convert a multi-page PDF to individual GIF files, one per page, in Photoshop. Sounds pretty easy, but alas...
I have Photoshop 6.0 running on an eight-year-old desktop running Windows XP with 512MB of RAM, and I have Photoshop CS3 running on a four-year-old laptop running Windows XP with 1GB of RAM. (Photoshop 6.0 is faster. Why did I pay $1,000 again?)
That being said, that's not really the problem. There are two main problems with CS3 and they've been driving me slightly nuts.
In Photoshop 6.0, there is a command under File -> Automate that lets you convert a multi-page PDF file to PSD files using a simple dialog box. It's a quick and efficient process that I used to use all the time. In Photoshop CS3, this dialog has been deprecated apparently in favor of the more powerful File -> Open dialog box for PDFs. Unfortunately, this dialog is unbelievably slow on multi-page PDFs--especially PDFs with several hundred pages, as it attempts to draw thumbnails for each page. Furthermore, even once the thumbnails are stored in memory, there's no way to convert the entire file to another format one page at a time in the manner that Photoshop 6.0 allows. You have to open all of the pages at once and then you can write a script to save them, but if my PDF happens to be 352 pages long, that means 352 simultaneously open windows. The swap file can't handle it.
This brings me to my second point. Even if you somehow are able to get all of the PDF pages converted to individual PSD files (perhaps by using a handy eight-year-old desktop on the same network with an older version of Photoshop, ahem), then trying to use an Action to automate the process of saving all of those PSD files as GIF images is incredibly painful in Photoshop in CS3. In Photoshop 6.0 it works perfectly, but CS3 has an issue with giving back the swap space after each successive image is opened. In other words, I can only open (and then close) a certain number of pages in sequence before I run out of hard disk space because Photoshop's swap file never gets smaller--it only grows with each new file that's opened. This seems to be just an unbelievably poor implementation of basic memory management techniques, and if it's some default setting that I don't know about, then there are serious UI issues with this release because no one would actually want their software to work like that, always eating up memory.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to solve these problems in Photoshop CS3, please let me know. Otherwise, I hope you're listening, Adobe...

PS6 is a workhorse, and it will never lock up because of registration
issues.

More memory! 2GB minimum if your notebook will handle it.

You can un-deprecate it by copying the following file (YFMV)
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 6.0\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop
Only\Automate\MultiPDFtoPSD.8LI
to here:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Plug-Ins\Automate
Fire up CS3, and presto, you are back on the air with the old script from
ps6.

  • How do you transfer pen tool drawings from Photoshop CS2 to Flash CS3?

I tried to copy and paste it but that didn't work.
I didn't want to redraw the entire picture in in pen again in Flash (so that I could later animate the drawing), so I was wondering how I could transfer the pen tool drawings from Photoshop to Flash?

I have an old laptop with Photoshop elements 5.0 and wanted to move that program to my newer PC but the program was too old so I bought and loaded Photoshop Elements 13 on my PC.  To import my photos from the 5.0 I did a full backup on a flash drive and then loaded the pictures to the PC with 13.  The pictures are there but none of my collections from 5.0. I read the manual and said I was supposed to be prompted to convert old catalogs.  I was never prompted and do not know how to transfer my collections in my catalog from 5.0 to the 13.
What you are doing is not only to install a newer version of PSE, it's also to migrate to a new computer.
The general solution is to do a full organizer backup on an external drive and do an organizer restore to the new computer (or new drive).
Use Backup, Restore to move catalog | Organizer | Elements 6 or later
The problem is that since PSE5 is an old version working with a different database engine, you must first use a conversion utility to create a PSE13 version.

So read that paper carefully, do the backup restore and conversion as described.

I bougnt my S5 a month ago and I am having two major issues.  The screen is very slow to respond.  When the screen is dark and I press the home button, it doesn't come on.  I have to press the button anywhere from 4-10 times and then it usually flashes on and back off.  It is very, very frustrating.  The other issue is that the battery drains very quickly.  I have called Verizon numerous times regarding these issues.  They tell me to do different things that never help.  We eventually did a factory reset and it still has the same issues.  Help!  It is a brand new phone and unfortunately I am in a new two year contract.  Ugh. Is there anyone out there who can help me?

I have done that several times.  In fact, every time I call Verizon with my phone problems, they have me do the same things repeatedly.  I keep telling them I have already done them but they insist they are SURE it will work this time.  It never does.  After doing the factory reset and it still not working correctly, they act like they are confused, almost like I am lying.  I did what you suggested above on the slim chance it would work this time but it did not.  I bought two S5's that day and the other one works perfectly fine.  I know I got a bad phone.  Verizon just does not listen.  It is a bad phone.  I just want a new phone that works properly.  Is that too much to ask?  I bought a new phone that has been bad from day one.  Why oh why do I have to spend hours of my time on the phone, in the store, on the computer, trying to rectify this?  It shouldn't be this difficult!  Help please!!!

  • Major Problem updating to Photoshop 2014 from Photoshop CC and Opening Lightroom

    windows 7 64 bit
Updated from Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5 to Photoshop 2014 and Lightroom 5.5.  Now Cannot install and run Extension manager and extentions in Photoshop 2014 but continue to work in Photoshop CC.  Lightroom 5.5 refuses to open but Lightroom 4.2 continues to function sort of.
Takes two double clicks to open Photoshop CC!
Been on to Adobe support team twice.  Uninstalled Photoshop 2014 and Lightroom.  Used CC app to update to Photoshop 2014 but now exactly the same problems exist as before
    Help please!

Roger, it seems you are facing 2 separate issues, one with not being able to launch Lr 5.5 and other with not being able work with extensions in PS CC 2014.
So, here is what i would suggest:
For the Lightroom launch issue, follow the solutions mentioned under Lightroom does not launch or get error: "Develop module is disabled" after 5.5 update
And for the Extensions not available in PS CC 2014, check this out. Extensions and Extension Manager not available in Photoshop CC 2014
Also, check this for more details. http://blogs.adobe.com/photoshopdotcom/2014/04/photoshop-spring-cleaning.html
    Hope that Helps.

  • Can't Print to Epson Printers from Photoshop

Hey everyone - for some reason I am unable to print from Photoshop CS6 to two different Epson printers - an Epson 9800 and an Epson 7880. I have tried to print from three different computers (OS 10.6 and OS 10.8) and have also tried three different USB cables. Each time I get the same results - the computer acts like it sends the data to the printer, but the printer never prints anything. I am not getting any error messages. I am attepting to print a 3960x2160, 720 DPI RGB TIF image. I tried printing from Preview as a test but that didn't work either.
This is a new problem as I have been printing to these printers for years with no issues.
I have tried reinstalling drivers, turning the computer and printers on and off, cleared my caches and repaired permissions, but so far no luck.
However there is ONE situation in which I am able to print - if I save the image as PDF and print it from from Acrobat, specifically with "Acrobat Color Management" selected, it WILL print. If I try to print from Acrobat with "Printer Manages Colors" selected, it will not print.
This is really driving me mad and I would love to find a solution. Major thanks to anyone who can help!

Success! I have no idea what the issue here is but I tried printing a completely different file as a test, and lo, that file prints fine. The other file does not. Since the file I'm trying to print is a rasterized Illustrator file, I just rasterized it again so I'm working with a new file, and it prints! I am so pleased.

  • Slow gif animations from photoshop

Hi all. I have to create two small gif animations. Each one is only 10 frames and the file size of my animations is under 40k when exported. But no matter what timing setting I use, they seem sluggish when viewed in any browser (FF, IE, Safari). I've tried 0.5, 0.2, 0.1, 0.05, and even 0.0 between frames. The animation should really only take half a second to complete but they seem to take up to two seconds to complete when view in a browser.
Yet I can view other gif animation on the web that are much larger in size and they seem to animate quickly and smoothly (compared to my slow and choppy ones).
is there a trick to getting fast, smooth animations from photoshop?
    Thanks!

    > via the gif animation import
There is no such feature in DW. DW knows nothing about GIF
    images other than
the fact that they are images. I'm guessing that you did not
    properly
export the animated GIF from Photoshop. When you open that
    image in the
    browser, does it animate?

I have upgraded my iMac to Yosemite but now my two Canon Printers no longer print from Photoshop CS6. I have upgraded the drivers. All other applications including Lightroom are fine. I am receiving an error message as follows:"There was an error opening your printer. Printing functions will not be available until you have selected a printer and reopened any documents." How can I get the OS to return a list of printers to Photoshop when Photoshop requests a list.

Have you printed to this printer from 10.10 before?  If so, check your connections.

  • Print Too Small from Photoshop CS4 with HP 8500 All In One Printer

I'm running Windows XP with CS4 and latest patches and drivers.  When I print an image to my HP 8500 All in one printer, the printout is too small.  Instead of a centered 4 x 6 image on the page I get a 1 x 1-1/4 inch small print of the image in the upper left hand corner.
I re-installed CS3 and it works perfectly as do any other print options, such as word, etc.  But from Photoshop CS4 I can find no way to print to this printer without the image shrinking in size.  If I print to another printer at the same sitting, the image is fine.  So it's a PS CS4 vs. HP 8500 unique problem I guess.
I've see this post in other forms and no help as yet.  Does anyone have this one on their radar.  I really like this printer, but it's quite annoying.
By the way, If I print to a PDF from PS CS4, the pdf file image is fine.  That's another end around for printing also. HMMMM.
I did contact HP and they put the problem squarely back on Adobe.  No partnership there.
    Thanks,
    Glen

Will the printer print from any app?
I know it sounds like a dumb question, but you didn't actually say...  And I admit to looking for software problems on an occasion or two when I had forgotten to plug in cables.

  • How do I resolve issues with missing layers when opening a Tiff file from Photoshop CS5.1?

I am downloading Tiff images from a partners website. After extracting the file and opening from Photoshop CS5.1 it's only displaying one of the original image layers. For example and image with two guys shaking hands in an office is only opening the clipped two guys and not showing the backgroud. The vendor says the files open fine on their end which leads me to believe its a download or photoshop issue. Any recommendations?

Thanks Curt... I don't think my explanation was clear. I'm downloading an image from an external webiste. The image downloads in a ZIP archive. After extracting from the Zip file, I go into photoshop and do file open. Only part of the image appears. It looks as if it's the top layer of a photoshop image but since I didn't build the image, I'm not certain it was built with multiple layers. Any ideas?

  • Help needed urgently with two major Logic 9 issues

    Dear all,
We've recently migrated from Logic 7 to 9 and have a major album project to finish using a fairly modest tracking setup. We've encountered two major issues that are holding up progress and wondered if anyone here has experienced them and has a solution..?
Our set up is an early 2009 2.93GHz 17" unibody Macbook Pro with a Motu 828mkII Firewire interface. We also have a motu microlite for extra midi.
Firstly, we're trying to track drums from an Elektron MachineDrum. With Logic 7 the MachineDrum's transport controls would control Logic's transport automatically so that we had a clear sync when tracking and could edit sounds and patterns on plus control Logic's transport from the MachineDrum. It also meant that we could drop in parts from song based sequences (of multiple patterns) in the correct position as song pointer information was also received. In the midi synch settings it would automayically jump to "midi clock". In Logic 9 it seems the Midi clock option is gone entirely.
We've also tried with an Elektron MonoMachine and have exactly the same problem. This all worked automatically in Logic 7. These machines have excellent sequencers and are very hands on so it makes it preferable to do it this way. We've spent the afternoon trying to replicate the behaviour of Logic 7 with no joy at all. I should say that Logic is receiving midi information but is not responding to the transport controls. Has this midi clock feature been removed entirely..? It will be a huge disappointment if this vital functionality has been removed as it's crucial to the way we write, sequence and record.
    Does anyone have a solution..?
Secondly, there seems to be a major bug with Logic 9 and we frequently have to quit and reboot to overcome it. Namely, certain actions reduce the audio to metal machine noise/ digital breakup bearing no resemblance to what we've recorded. This includes opening two projects simultaneously, dragging any audio from the media bin to the arrange, editing a marker in the list window etc. This has happened about twenty times today doing some light work on a project. We also noticed this intermittently when doing some vocal tracking on Logic 8 at a friends studio.
Has anyone else experienced this? It's a nightmare and means we won't be able to use it reliably live either. Does anyone have a solution?
Many thanks for taking the time to consider this,
    JH

Having tried to sync Logic to my LinnDrum back in Logic 7, I can see why they removed it.
It was hideously catastrophic and caused me ages of grief, as the function only really makes sense for MIDI/trigger sequencing.
As I remember it works perfectly well with MIDI only, which is what it was designed for. I've synced Logic via MIDI from a second computer for 20-30 minutes with absolutely no sync problems or drift.
    yes, that worked fine.
But then turning around and trying to sync +something else+ to that recording.
Logic never could record tempo variation as a continuous stream, as an analogue tape machine would record a sync signal, so the stepping would inevitably lead to increasing loss of sync, loss of hair, and the desire to break things.
I eventually just set aside that function, with the intention if revisiting in a later, hopefully fixed, version.
And whaddaya know - they fixed it good.

  • Save Image in ACR 5.6 vs. Open/Save from Photoshop CS4

Apologies in advance if this turns out to be cockpit error. Recently started shooting again, after a long hiatus, and boy there have been some changes over the past few years. I feel like Rip Van Winkle.
Was used to early versions of ACR with CS2 and thought I was doing just fine finding my way around a new PC using ACR 5.6 RC with Photoshop CS4, when I processed my first shoot using the two. Followed my old/usual raw workflow with Photomechanic selects -> Bridge -> batch processing with Photoshop, when I noticed the JPEGs PS was saving from my PS Action didn't reflect adjustments I had set in ACR/Bridge.
The Action was pretty simple, just did an open, a few simple adjustments, profile/mode conversion, and a save as JPEG. I tried running the Action two different ways, once from Bridge and once directly in PS, and got the same result.
Scratching my head (this stuff used to work fine), I opened all the images into ACR from Bridge, clicked Select All, then clicked Save Images, and saved them as JPEGs into a folder. This worked, where each JPEG written reflected the crop, WB, exposure/brightness, contrast/black settings I had made through ACR/Bridge.
Any idea what I've overlooked? I tried this using both 32-bit and 64-bit PS. The PC is running Win7 RTM x64. The camera body is a Canon 7D, which is why I installed ACR 5.6 RC. I'm otherwise really tickled with everything. Nice to see the progress made by everyone in the industry while I was away. Thanks in advance...

    Dr. Powell wrote:

If you are running an action during a Batch operation you need to be sure that either you DON'T record ad Open step and select Suppress File Open and Color Profile Warnings in which case the Camera Raw settings in play for a given image will be processed in or make sure you _DO_ record an open step making sure you select the correct workflow settings (color space, resolution, etc) but without making ANY adjustments while recording the open step and make sure you've selected the Override Action Open Command...
It's confusing until you understand what it is your are or not recording...
When you record a an open step while selecting the Workflow settings and NOT making any image adjustments all you are recording is the workflow settings. Then in Batch you tell the Batch to ignore the Open command and only use the Workflow settings...
Otherwise you don't actually need to record an explicit open step...you won't have any absolute control over what Workflow setting are in play-but since the Workflow settings are sticky you can open an image to double check the settings and click Done and then you've set the Workflow settings manually (not in an action).
The other oddity when recording an open action step in Photoshop is that the actual command to open must come from Photoshop...this may seem simple but it's not. I keep a spare raw file on the desktop so when recording an Open action I can start in Photoshop and turn on recording then drag & drop the raw file onto my Photoshop Icon to make sure Photoshop is opening the image then click to set the Workflow settings and specifically do NOT make any other image adjustment steps (they would also be recorded) and continue with the Open, then whatever other steps you need to add before recording the Save and Close steps (yeah, same tricky deal on the end with the Save As recorded and the Override Action Save As Commands...
If all of the above makes your eye's glaze over (the best time to learn how to do this stuff is NOT when you are under the gun or a deadline) I suggest you try using Image Processor...easier to set up and learn, not nearly as powerful as a Batch Action though...

  • How to regress from iTunes 7 to iTunes 6.0.5

How to regress from iTunes 7 to iTunes 6.0.5
    1. Make sure you have a copy of the iTunes 6.0.5 installer. If you no longer have one, download it here:
    http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/nph-reg3rdpty2.pl/product=11622&cat=1&platform =osx&method=sa/iTunesSetup.exe
    2. Shut down iTunes 7 if it is running
    3. Uninstall iTunes 7 via the Add/Remove Programs control panel.
    4. Go to your iTunes MUSIC folder (usually C:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes). You will see two files called "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Music Library". These belong to iTunes 7, DELETE them.
NOTE: Take care not to confuse this with the iTunes INSTALLATION folder, which is usually C:\Program Files\iTunes.
    5. You will also see a folder called "Previous iTunes Libraries". Look inside, there may be several copies depending upon your upgrade history with names like "iTunes Library 2006-09-12". Take the most recent one (the last one used by iTunes 6) and COPY it up to the folder C:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes. Now RENAME this file back to simply "iTunes Library".
NOTE: To copy a file in Windows, right-click the file and choose "Copy". Now go to the folder you wish to copy to, right-click in the empty folder space and choose "Paste".
NOTE: To rename a file in Windows, select the file and press F2. Now type the name you want and press ENTER.
After this is done, your iTunes MUSIC folder (C:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes) should contain the following objects:
    a) The file "iTunes Library" that you just copied there and renamed
    b) The folder "Previous iTunes Libraries"
    c) The folder "iTunes Music"
    6. Now reinstall iTunes 6. All your playlists and ratings will appear as if nothing had happened. And, your Shuffle will work once more.

I just want to bump this and say thank you soooo much.
I upgraded to itunes 7 today (I have an ipod mini) and everything was fine except I couldn't upload anything my ipod...sooo frustrating, so when I saw this I followed your steps and voila, I can upload music again!
Thank you...and apple should really check the programs before letting people upgrade...also if the newer pogams don't work for the older devices, they should make a note so people don't make that change.

  • Export from Photoshop Elements 6 to Premiere Elements 8

I prepared a slide show with The Organizer of Photoshop Elements 6 and produced a DVD which has good but not excellent image quality (I chose File Setting - High 800x600). To improve the DVD image quality I installed the trial version of Premiere Elements 8. I exported the slide show to Premiere Elements 8 and have several problems.1 The image quality of the DVD produced by Premiere Elements 8 is worse than the one produced from The Organizer (Photoshop Elements 6).
2 The titles, transitions and soundtrack does not show in Premiere Elements 8.
3 The slides sequence in Premiere Elements 8 is different then the one in the slide show in The Organizer (Photoshop Elements 6).
At one time a menu popped up asking me if I wanted to convert the Catalogue of V6. I declined because I was afraid that the V6 catalogue may be replaced and I would not be able to go back to it.
    Please help.
    CarlosWA

    CarlosWA
    Conclusion.
My results are consistent with your problems NOT being associated with Photoshop Elements 6 slideshow being used instead a Photoshop Element 8 slideshow in the slideshow transfer to Premiere Elements 8.
Testing. Photoshop Elements 6/Premiere Elements 8.
First I created a slideshow in the Photoshop Elements 6 Slide Show Editor. It included:
    (a) 19 jpeg photos each with pixel dimensions of 3264 x 2448 (that is not recommended pixel dimensions but was used to stress out the project if possible...these represent grossly oversized photos since the goal is DVD VIDEO with standard frame size of 720 x 480.)
    (b) I used a Wipe transition between each
    (c) I used text within the photos (included in the text was a sequential number so that I could more easily visually follow the sequence of the slideshow after it was transferred to Premiere Elements 8)
    (d) I added two audio clips as soundtrack (the first I placed from beginning to just before the last two photos to pick up on any audio out of sync as well as loss of a whole audio clip)
    (e) I used a pan and zoom effect for photos 1 and 2.
The quality of the preview in the Photoshop Elements 6 Slide Show Editor was good.
I outputted the Photoshop Elements 6 Slide Show Editor slideshow, using the Slide Show Edit Output option "Send to Premiere Elements". When I did, Premiere Elements 8 opened, I set the project preset, and it accepted the slideshow. In the Project Media area were
    (a) a folder containing all the individual components of the slideshow
    (b) the slideshow file in a video (grouped) form
The video (grouped) form had automatically been placed on the Timeline as well.
Everything transferred correctly. No problems. SEE IMPORTANT NOTE BELOW.
I even burned the Timeline content to DVD-VIDEO standard from Premiere Elements 8, and the DVD-VIDEO standard played back well on my 19 in LCD Widescreen TV.
Testing. Photoshop Elements 8/Premiere Elements 8.
I repeated the above with Photoshop Elements 8/Premiere Elements 8 and the same slideshow and obtained the same results.
IMPORTANT. Whether it was Photoshop Elements 6/Premiere Elements 8 or Photoshop Elements 8/Premiere Elements 8, I had to render the Timeline in the Edit Mode in order to get the best possible preview so that I could determine/confirm what was on the Premiere Elements Timeline. And, rendering the Timeline as described with all those oversized photos took several hours.
This is what I need to know:
    1. How many photos did you use in the slideshow in the Photoshop Elements 6 or 8 slideshow, and what were their pixel dimensions? If you do not know, you can check it out in Photoshop Elements Full Editor/Image Menu/Resize/Image Size dialog or just place your mouse course over the file on the hard drive and note the "dimensions".
    2. If you transfer your slideshow from Photoshop Elements 6 or 8 to Premiere Elements 8, use the Output option "Send to Premiere Elements", and get your slideshow on the Premiere Elements 8 Timeline, do you render that Timeline by pressing the Enter Key of the computer main keyboard so that the red line over the Timeline turns green when the process is complete?
    3. Is your computer optimized, defragmented, cleaned up, scratch files directed to an external hard drive (NTFS formatted), etc. If you are using an external hard drive for the scratch files, is there enough space there for them?
    4. What is your computer operating system and what are its resources, such as, available RAM and free hard drive space. Have you checked your computer's virtual memory set up?
Stay the course on this to rule in or out the above non wmv approach to getting your slideshow as a DVD-VIDEO. But if you do decide to detour over to Save As File Movie .wmv and you are dealing with oversized photos and an offending component in the slideshow, the the writing of the .wmv becomes a possible focus point for errors. And, if the .wmv is destined for DVD-VIDEO, then use the file size (also known as profile) = NTSC DVD (720 x 480).
I suspect that the problem core goes to
    (a) use of oversized photos
    (b) offending component in slideshow
    (c) size of slideshow
    (d) computer resources
    (e) combination of all or any one of above
I will continue to watch for your progress.
