Two sided masterpages in InDesign

I am designing personalized mailers for a client that needs to be double sided. How can I create a master page for both the front and the back of the mailer in InDesign 5 or 6 so if I safe the pdf my file would consist of the front and back pages collated e.g. Front1, Back1, Front2, Back2, etc.? I need to supply the pdf collated to the printers and there are about 2000 different names with both a front and a back. I do not have the time to make to merge the two different file together in one pdf so that the front and the back of the mailer would be together in the pdf file.
Are there a faster way to merge such files in AcrobatPro without manually moving the pages to the correct position?

Start off by creating a 2 page document with facing pages. Use a 2 page master. Position your variable placeholders on the master pages, left for the back of mailer, right for the front of mailer. When you create the merged document, it will create a multi page document of front, back, front, back, etc. If the pages have bleed, there are a few things you can do to accommodate this situation.

  • Help Please, Ganging 4 up two sided inDesign CS2

I'm looking for help with a clients request. They would like a two sided card I've designed to be sent to a printer with 4 up on a larger sheet, in the form of a pdf. I found a suggestion elsewhere to import pdfs made of the original single document file and just place them onto the larger sheet. This doesn't seem to take into account that the job is two sided printing, as only the front side of the pdf import is showing up. (I'm 'Placing' the file as I don't see another import option other than xml. Does anyone have any suggestions, short of dropping a bunch of money on 'Imposer' programs?
    Cheers and Thanks!

Visual designing is a good term ...why?...because many feel they what you see on screen is what you get...kind of like pint to a colour, click and hey presto that look nice, lets use that colour...but sadly it's not how it should be done. Structured thinking in design is whats required. You need always to start somewhere and the RGB and CMYK palettes are NOT the right place! Think about this as developing a consistent image of and for  your client/customer. Do they have corporate colours already or are they just starting out in a new enterprise...prehaps even refurbishing all their marketing peices so they stand out and look consistent with all colour matching stationery, brouchures etc. You'rd be surprised at how many clients will come back t you time and time again just because you've always kept a consistent image going for them. Your client doesn't know anything about printing apart from what they print on their office printers. They don't know anythng about CMYK, RGB, PMS, resolution, DPI, LPI, colour separation, bleed etc.....they see what they have composed in Publisher or Word and think you can print exactly what they have...this couldn't be further from the reality of the printer's world!
You mentioned colour in AI and colour in IND ..add to that colour in PSD...none can give a true reflection on the final printed output. And without a starting point as a close referrence you reaaly won't have any idea of what the final ouput will look like.....digital verses offset? ...depends on how much was spent on the digital or offset output machinery..a good office or printery machine could cost from around $5,000 - 20,000...offset printer 100,000+....it's obious what sort of quality ouput one can expect to achieve based on that alone.
So what is the staring point we should all adhere to when choosing colours?...the virtual swatch library in AI, IND, PS? ...or the real physical swatch books like PANTONE MATCHING? ...YES!...that is it! Get yourself 2 PMS books, one for coated and the other for uncoated. Now you have a good staring point for determining what colours can be printed ..and within reason, don't assume that what you choose from in those swatch books is exactly what you will get in the final output with offset print or digital! Think about it, the stock used to print the swatches is not what you are using to print your client's job! That must be the first and foremost discussion you would have with your client when choosing the colours...make them understand this your they maybe unhappy about the final print! They should choose a paper stock ...you should be able to provide that as well, get alog to your paper suppliers and grab all their paper swatch books...then learn to read your customer cos some paper stocks are damn expensive..if they don't appear to have the funds to print their media peices on the most expensive stocks then only show then what you think they can affrd ...try commodity papers first!
Ok ..the basics....colour libraries are available in all Adobe designing programs...you should have no problems selecting colour palettes in either AI, INDD and PS. Just remember a few things, if you are printing PMS Spot on coated stocks choose SOLID COATED ...uncoated CHOOSE SOLID UNCOATED....never convert a spot colour to CMYK by changing to SPOT TO PROCESS ...this does not work and many people make that mistake! Always convert a spot colour directly to CMYK. Never convert an RGB colour to a PMS colour and then to a CMYK colour and exect to get a cosistent result. Always refer to PMS matching system book before anything else.
RGB images...never place an RGB image in IND and expect it to look the same even when you've exported to PDF and converted the CMYK in Acrobat Pro's Ink settings ...ALWAYS OPEN THE RGB IMAGE IN PHOTOSHOP AND CONVERT THERE....SAVE AS .PSD THEN USE 'PLACE' to insert into IND ...while you're in photoshop you can check you image's resolution and make any final adjustments.
I'm sure I haven't covered everything here ..it's impossible ...there is too much to write in one session...but I do hope that I have covered the basics to get any budding GD (Graphic Designer) upto speed with some good print ethics. Please ask ...if I can help I will do my best at least!

  • How do you print two-sided in In Design when some sections have an odd number of pages?

I'm new to In Design, and I'm trying to do something that seems pretty basic and having trouble figuring out how to do it, and I haven't found anything in the Adobe Forum or online that addresses this situation.
I am working on a document that is broken into sections, with page numbering starting on Page 1 for each section.  I have mirror image layouts for the odd and even master pages - for example, the page number is on the left side on even pages and on the right side for odd pages, as you might generally expect to see on a two-sided printout, where in a book or a binder, the even pages are on the left and the odd pages are on the right.
I'm printing the document from my computer onto a printer that supports two-sided printing.  I don't see any options in the File / Print window for two sided printing, so I set this option on the printer itself using the [Setup...] button at the bottom of the window.  This works - I am getting the printout on both sides of the sheets of paper.
At the moment, the first section is 3 pages (two spreads, one with the first page, and one with the other two).  The next section starts with page number 1 on the third spread (one page) and then continues two pages per spread - all as expected.
Here's the problem - the first page of the second section is printing on the back of the last sheet of first section, rather than starting on a new front-facing sheet - so when I put this in a binder, the odd pages are on the left and the even pages on the right.  Every time I hit the end of another section with an odd number of pages, it flips around again.
There's a manual workaround I found - scan through the document and add a blank page to the end of every section that has an odd number of pages (and check "Print Blank Pages).  But I'd have to do this every time I print as I'm adding new pages, and add/delete blank pages as the number in each section changes.
I can't believe that In Design doesn't provide a way to get this to work properly, as I'm sure many people have had this same situation, and I'm hoping that it's some simple thing that I just haven't been able to figure out...
    HELP!!! (thanks!  B^)

Well, MS Word does something like this automatically - if you tell it to start a new section on an odd page, and if the section before it ends on an odd page, it will "skip" the even page number in between - and when it prints, it automatically spits out a blank page in between them, so that on a two-sided printer, the odd pages all print on the front of the paper (which is the right-facing sheet when they are put in a binder or book).
InDesign shows the pages like this on the spreads (odd page numbers always on the right), so it is aware of the desired orientation, and I'd think it would provide a mechanism to ensure that they print out this way as well...

  • Mail Merge folded, two sided, 8 1/2 x 11 invitation

I have a two sided, 8 1/2 x 11, full color, folded invitation that will either print correctly or mail merge but won't do both. Is there a solution for this? I am using InDesign CS6 and printing to a Konica Minolta Biz Hub 550.

Thanks for the reply. The printer does the document fine without the mail merge, so I am not sure if it is the printer or ID. This printer gets lots of use with various types of InDesign docs, most of which are multiple pages, different sizes, folded, stapled, etc. etc. It is when I try to do mail merge with the other parameters that it merges fine but seems to ignore the other commands. I am going to try it now with the pdf setup. Will let you know what happens.

  • How to do two sided printing automatically with HP 7520 printer

All that I am trying to do is to make my printer do two sided or double sided printing.  No matter what I check IT DOES NOT WORK.  I checked "2-sided, 1 to 2, NOTHING.  What amazes me is that this worked until recently and now it just will not do double sided printing.  I am probably doing something wrong, but WHAT?

Generally speaking, duplex printing is accessed / adjusted from Printing Preferences.
If you are printing from within an application, for example, within Word or within your Browser, you might reach Printing Preferences from Print Preview.
    Reference:
Manage Print Output with Print Preview
    Excerpted:

  • OfficeJet 4500 will not print two sided over network

I'm running on Windows 7 with an OfficeJet 4500 G510n-z over WiFi.  Printer works great except that it will not print two sided.  We've used a non-WiFi 4500 to print two sided before.  With the new printer the first pages print and the pop-up shows on the laptop (prompt to flip paper over) but nothing happens.  The second pages never print.
I've run all of the HP print and network diagnostics.  Everything appears to be OK.

The solution below was found on the sticky post at the top of this board "Fixes and Workarounds from HP"
I think the patch below only applies if you have the original printer software installed, I assume this issue was fixed in later versions of the printer software, Read the patch information carefully.

  • Cannot get the copy setting to change from two-sided to one-sided on my officejet pro 8615

My copy setting on my printer (HP Officejet Pro 8615) all-in-one shows
    Two Sided               1:1
When I tab over to where the 1-sided original and 1-sided original copy & 1-sided original and 2-sided copy can be selected, the blue light is on 1-sided original and 1-sided copy.  It will not change to the One sided    1:1.  The printer will print one side and asks you to flip over to side 2.  As a result, I cannot print anything.  Please help

    Hi @Granniej60
It sounds like we may need to select the option you want in the copy menu then select it as a default. To make sure I understand though, you are unable to select the 1 sided original : 2 sided copy, or you have selected it and it is not working?

  • The print menu on my MacBook Air won't allow me to select two sided printing, how do I do this?

    Hi Community,
I recently purchased a MacBook Air (my very first Mac) and I cannot access all of the printing options when I print.  I am able to print and the printer driver was downloaded, but my options are limited.  I cannot enable two sided printing, which is something I was able to do with my current printer via my old laptop.  I am in grad school and have a lot of journal articles to print and read that are 60-70 pages each.  I'd much rather print these two sided to save paper.  I have the latest version of OS X (version 10.8.5) and my printer is an HP Laser Jet P2035n.
Can anyone help me fix this issue so I don't have to use my old laptop to print?
    Thanks,
    Melissa

  • How can I print two-sided with Mountain Lion and an Epson WF-2540?

I just purchased an Epson WF-2540 printer with two-sided printing capabilities. The manual includes easy to follow instructions on doing this with a PC. However, it doesn't seem to be present in OSX Mountain Lion (10.8.4). I have looked all over for the answer, but nothing helps with this specific problem. It seems like, before Mountain Lion, there was a simple check-box within system preferences>print and fax>options and supplies>drivers that said "duplexer." Now, that option is not present. I would love to be able to use this function on my new printer. Thanks for all of your help!

    I have the answer ...
The Epson WF-2540 does not appear to be a two-sided printer!
    Reference this article:
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/jsp/Product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&sku=C11CC36 201
The following is extracted from that article:
There is no reference anywhere in what I've shown or the rest of the article to two-sided printing.
Compare that to my Epson Workforce 645, which is a two sided printer.  Here's what it says in the Epson writeup:
... and indeed my options under the Layout dropdown menu look a lot different from yours, and from there I can choose two sided (whether I've attached as AirPrint or not, by the way).

  • HP LaserJet P1005 Two-sided printing not working on network

    Good day!
I have a desktop, with Windowx XP, to which my LaserJet P1005 is connected via USB. My wife has a laptop, with the same Windows XP, from which she can print, but the two-sided option does not work right. She can check it and print, but the window to restart printing for the second side does not open and there is nothing we can do at this point.
I have trie duninstalling the printer from both computers and reinstalling the newest drivers, it still won't work.
    Thanks for your help!

I have an HP PhotoSmart 2575 All-in-One with the latest HP driver that displays the two-sided printing option greyed-out in the Layout window. According to HP, your printer must be capable of accepting an optional two-sided printer tray to work on a Mac. To me that is ludicrous since in Windows the driver supports manual two-sided printing.
To get around this, I select the Paper Handling window and from the Pages to Print drop-down list select Odd only instead of the default All Pages. After clicking the print button the odd pages print starting with the last page and ending with the first. I then remove all paper and reinsert the printed pages with the top of the page facing the printer. First, though, I reorder the pages with the first page on the bottom and the last page on top. If the total number of pages is an odd number, I remove the last page from the inserted stack, as that is the very last printed page. I then select Even only from the Pages to Print drop-down list and click print again.
    Problem solved.

  • HP Photosmart c7280 All-in-One Mac 10.7.1 (Lion) the "Two-Sided" option is grayed and cannot use?

I have a HP Photosmart c7280 All-in-One printer and a Macbook Air that runs the Lion operating system (10.7.1).
I am trying and needing to print via the "Two-sided" option that appears under the "Layout" pull down tab option, however, the "Two-Sided" option appears to be greyed out as if you are not allowed to use it.  I am sure that that is not the case I just do not know how to unlock it yet I guess?
I just made sure that all of my software was up to date and it is currently.
Everything else is perfect about the printer and I have been using it for years, so thank you!  I would just like to know what on earth I am doing wrong or need to do to unlock that "Two-sided" setting, so I do not waste a ton of paper!  Thanks again!

    Hi DAP413,
In order to actiate the Two-Sided duplex accessory, you have to enable it from the printer settings:
-Enter System Preferences > Print & Scan
-Double click the Photosmart printer name to open the Print Queue.
    -Click the Printer Setup button
-Click the Driver tab and make sure the Two-Sided Printing Accessory option is checked.

  • OfficeJet Pro L7590 and two-sided printing

Anyone been able to implement 2 sided printing with this printer. Seems like HP driver is broken, even though print setup allows one to check two-sided printing.

This may help in regards to this two sided issue. I did have some orientation problems on landscape mode but was able to print two sided. After hours of working between HP and Apple etc. I in theory figured out something that proved to work. HP's web driver page warns of not trying to use 10.5 drivers and programs on Snow Leopard. My theory was that in the upgrade process to 10.6 could there be some problems in the process of changing out the drivers and programs, (some programs are even said not to work at all by HP in S.L.). So I did a complete uninstall of all HP printer programs, software and drivers and then reinstalled the printer fresh in Snow Leopard. Wonder of wonders now the two sided printing works properly and the needed adjustments are all back. In a few different places but they are there and they do work. So maybe the problem exists in the upgrade process? I did not have the problems at all in 10.5 but after the upgrade everything changed. Now that it is more like a fresh install in SL all seem to work. The only thing I have not done yet is use the scanner process which HP admits is very different but they do give instructions about it on the driver download page. Hope this helps someone else.

  • Problem with HP 1220c USB printer - two-sided print greyed-out

My client has a Powerbook G4 550MHz with Tiger 10.4 installed and I installed the latest HP 1220c driver.
When my client attempted to configure the printer via the printer setup page under 'layout' the two-sided print is greyed-out. Why?
    My client has admin rights.

The layout of the print window is not the same as OS 9.x and prior. There will not be a choice for double sided printing as there was pre OS X unless the printer comes with an automatic duplexer.
You will have to figure out how to print odds and evens in separate jobs and do it manually.

  • HP Photosmart c3180 Two-sided Printing

I have been advised by HP support that it is not possible to use the two-sided printing feature on this printer with Mac, although it works perfectly on my PC. Does anyone know of a way to enable this feature on Mac or some workaround?

One way to do this would be to run Windows in Parallels or some other partition environment, and print from Windows on your Mac.
