Two users on the same computer

My daughter and I would like to use the same computer for our iPods. But we want to maintain separate music libraries. I can't figure out how that works.

Check this out. I prefer method three.

  • How do I share one itunes account between two users on the same computer

How do I share one itunes account between two users on the same computer without taking up twice as much space on my hard drive?

You would need to move the itunes folder to a location that both users have permissions to access such as the Shared folder or any folder on the root level of the macintosh HD.
You can find instructions here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203 This method allows you to share the content without sharing the same library.

  • Hello there - how can I share my iTunes library between two users on the same computer? I put the library in a shared folder between both and have selected this library on both as well, but when I update iTunes with music etc it only appears on one?

Thank you Joe - I tried this but it's only showing a teensy amount of music - the stuff on the second users account as opposed to the giagntic library on the 'main' account. I actually went to a Genius Bar and they said that apple doesn't really want you to share music between accounts - parents don't want to hear their kids music etc. Which seemed strange, but it might be the case sadly   Thanks anyway!

  • TS2972 is it possible to use home sharing between two users on the same computer?

My wife and I have itunes accounts and want to be able to share music we have each bought on our accounts. We have tried setting up the home sharing on our PC but it doesn't show up on the screen. Can anyone please help?

"Is it possible to use home sharing between two users on the same computer?"
No. Home sharing is used to connect two running instances of iTunes across a network. When you switch users on the computer all applications running on the other profile are suspended.
You can however share your respective media folders so that they are visible in either profile and then copy over any content that you want, or you could create a single joint library which you use when either user is logged in.

  • Sync a folder between two users on the same computer.

I would like to sync a folder between two users on the same computer so that they are always the same when I access them from either user.

then place this folder somewhere where both users have access to like in /Users/Shared. then there is only one folder to deal with and you don't need to sync anything.

  • Sharing iTunes Library with two users on the same computer

I have all of my music stored on a external hard drive.
Both users on the same computer have the iTunes music location folder as the external hard drive. How do I see music added in one persons log-in? For example: I just purchased two albums under one log-in. The second log in can not see that music unless I manually add it.
Both Libraries point to the same file location.
I have over 40GB of music and I am looking for a way to manage my music files more effectively and I want to make sure that both log-ins have the same music.
I followed the instructions in article HT1203 from the apple support site.

The reason you are having this issue is because you have a shared library but private databases. What you have on the external drive is the collection of media files (library) that each account is set up to access as the source for media. What you have not done is set up a shared iTunes database, so each user accesses the same library differently.
When each user opens iTunes, iTunes access the database on their account (~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library). Therefore, their settings, views, playlists, etc., are private. When they add songs to their library only their database file is updated to reflect those additions; simply having files in the music folder does not mean that iTunes will recognize them, hence the reason iTunes asked you if you want to move the file to the trash when you delete it from your library.
The confusion here is the double use of the term library. The contents of you music folder most definitely constitutes your media library, as it is the collection of your media files. What you see as your library in iTunes is not your library but, for the most part, the content stored in a database table maintained by iTunes in the iTunes Library file in your iTunes folder. iTunes does not access your actual media files unless it is absolutely necessary. The general assumption is that what is shown in your iTunes “library” will actually mirror what is in your music folder.
So the missing step in your setup would be to switch to the account that has the most current iTunes library—that is the one reflects the actual contents of your music folder as of now—and follow this procedure.
    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Move the iTunes folder to the Shared folder (./Users/Shared).
    3. Launch iTunes, but immediately hold the option key to invoke the Choose Library window.
    4. Select the database (iTunes Library file) now located in the shared folder.
    5. If you do not see your content, go to iTunes’ preferences and reset the location of the music folder to the external drive.
    6. In the other accounts, re-launch iTunes and change the library according to steps 3 and 4.
Now all users will have access to the same iTunes database as well as the shared library. The downside of this is that each user will have full access privileges. If you have iTunes 8, then to avoid the disadvantages that come with this type of set up, see [this thread|http://forums.macworld.com/thread/105366?tstart=0] over at Macworld.

  • ICal subscriptions between two users on the same computer??

    Hello,
Im hoping there is an easy free fix to this issue. Im trying to have my iCal and my girlfriends iCal work seamlessly together. I want to be able to see all changes made by her and vice versa. Unfortunately neither of us have mobileMe or a server. I figured this would be really easy since were on the same computer on the same network. Any help would be great, I cant find any fix out there in google land.
    Cheers, Luke.

    Greetings,
You need something to do the "sharing" of the calendar between the 2 users. That is where a server like MobileMe comes in.
    Options:
_MobileMe (it has a free trial if you want to test it out)
    _Google Calendar (comes from gmail)
    _Other CalDAV server
If you both have the same CalDAV (MobileMe, Google Calendar, or other CalDAV) server added to iCal in both users you will then have a common calendar. Anything one of you adds to the calendar will show up in the other user's calendar.
    MobileMe:https://www.me.com

    Hope that helps.

  • Why can't I share between two users on the same computer?

I just got a new Mac Pro, and I had some difficulty getting Migration Assistant to work, so by the time I finally did get it to work, I already had a few apps and docs on my computer.  So after I ran Migration Assistant, I discovered that some of my files had disappeared.  I finally figured out that I now had two different users on my computer (that were both me) and I had to switch to the other version of me to get my missing files.  So I logged into my other user account, and I moved everything into the shared folder, and then went back to my current profile and tried to open the drop box.  I got this message: "The folder “Drop Box” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."  So I went back and set the sharing and permissions so that everyone could read and write.  Then I went back, and I still got the same error message.  So then I went back and set the permissions of every folder in the hierarchy so that everyone can read and write.  Still got the same error message.  Then I went into my old account, went into Sharing in the System Preferences, turned on sharing and set it so everyone has read and write access.  Still got the same error message.  So before I just copy everything onto an external drive, I thought I'd see if anyone here had any ideas.
I really wish I could opt out of this whole "users" business, on my own computer computer in my own home.  That's one thing I really miss about OS 9.

Thanks for your reply, but this article is telling me to do exactly what I already tried.  I just get the message: "The folder “Drop Box” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."

  • Sharing two iphoto libraries between two users on the same computer?

My wife and myself use the same MacBook with two different user accounts. We both checked the check box "Look for shared photos" in the iPhoto preferences, but my wife's library doesn't appear in my iPhoto and vice versa. How can we manage to do this?

    Toni
For tis to work, you have to also check 'Share this Library' and log in to both accounts and have iPhoto running in both accounts, and switch between accounts using Fast User Switching.

  • How do I use the same profile for two users on the same computer

I use my laptop both at home and at work. And in each venue I use a different user log on. But I wish to have firefox use the same profile for each user log on. How can I get firefox to point to the same profile for each user?

Note that only one user (Firefox instance) can use a profile folder at the time, so if you would switch the Windows user to another account then you would first have to close Firefox.

  • Sharing music between two users of the same computer

My husband and I both have i pods and use the same PC, running Windows XP. We have different user names in XP, but have the same e-mail address and apple account. We can't have both our iTunes open at the same time and can't share music without creating playlists in each others library and then burning them to CDs. More than half the time the CD's fail to burn and we get error messages. We have tried the sharing settings in Preferences, Exporting and Importing files and folders, etc. but nothing works. Are we destined to have to buy the same songs twice?

    1 Quit iTunes.
    2 Drag your entire iTunes folder from \My Documents\My Music\ to a Shared C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music.
    3 Log out.
1 Log in on your other account(s).
2 Start iTunes and immediately press an hold the Shift key.
3 iTunes will ask to Create new library or Choose existing library. Select Choose existing library.
4 Select the iTunes library file in the iTunes folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\iTunes.
5 Now go to File -> Add Folder to library and select the iTunes music folder located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\iTunes.
6 - iTunes will add all the music in from this account to the main iTunes music folder/library.
    7 Delete the iTunes folder in \My Documents\My Music\.
8 Restart iTunes normally (don't hold Shift). Everything should be there.
9 Quit iTunes and log out of the account.
10 Do the above steps for all users. Don't do the first 1-3 steps. Start at the second series.
Log into your account, start iTunes normally and all music should be there.
Whenever any of you do anything in iTunes, it will be seen by all since you are using one and the same iTunes library file.
Create a "main" playlist for each user with their own music. Create a smart playlist and set it to Playlist is not the playlist you created above. Select this and it will show you everything NOT in your playlist. Do the same for the others. This will help when adding only the music you want your own playlist.
Note that iTunes can only be opened by one user at a time.

  • TS2972 I have multiple libraries on the "same computer" with two different desktops, can't I share between two libraries on the same computer?

I'm trying to use home sharing to share content between libraries so some of the combined content in a given library, can be synced to an ipad.   Instad of having mulitple computers, i have multiple libraries on the same computer using two desktops.  How do I share within the same computer?

iTunes must be running for home sharing to work.  There is no way to have home sharing running simultaniously for two users on the same computer.
Simply add the media files using File > Add File/Folder option in iTunes.

  • Can I transfer songs between two libraries on the same computer?

I have two libraries on my computer, was wondering if any one knows a simple painless way to transfer music from one to the other.
The reason is my music collection has gotten unfathomably large over the years, and I no longer want it to be that way. I was thinking maybe I could just find someway to "hide" a majority of the songs most of the time, and just show the ones i'm into at the moment. Since i couldn't find a way to do that, i made another entire library (both under the same user), thinking i would keep the bulk in one and the songs i was into for the moment in another, but have them linking to the same folder containing all the music files. This is working fine, but i would love an easier way to transfer the songs over to the favourites library, especially someway to do all the songs in a play list.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
    Thank you!
