UCS C240 M3 LSI MegaRAID VD Info

Hello,
I did replacement a new drive form a server(about 2 days ago and new physical drive number(slot) 6),
and I check storage log about new physical disk is rebuild finish and VD state change degraded to optimal from Cisco IMC.
But virtual drive's health is "Severe Fault" and also Overall Server Status same status.
I have to experience about replacement another C-series rack type server.
but I can't understand in this case. Is it bug?or something wrong?
Server : C240 M3(Ver : 2.0(1b))
RAID Card : LSI MegaRAID SAS 9271-8i
RAID Conf : SSD 2ea -> RAID 1
                    SAS 4ea -> RAID 10

can you share the "Virtual drive Info"  tab?

       1.
We have this server c22 m3s
I have installed the raid card and the battery.
Altough, When I boot, I do not see any LSI prompt.
CIMC does not see anything in the storage controller section. And Yes, I did install the lastest upgrades.
What do I need to do in order to be able to use the card?
It's a Brand new server. Blank.
    And no prompt for CTRL+H.
      2.
What is the use of the GPIO connector from the sas cable?
Am i obligated to plug it ?

    Danik,
This servers have a embedded RAID controlleri on the motherboard as well  (embedded SATA-only RAID controller that supports up to four SATA-only drives  <<< Does not support Virtualization OSs, like VMware) so if you bought a PCIe RAID card, you have 2 RAID controllers.
How many CPUs do you have? and where is this RAID controller installed? Controllers are installed by default in slot 1 for 1-CPU systems and slot 2 for 2-CPU systems, meaning that if there is only one CPU and the card is in slot 2, it will NOT be recognized/work, unless you change the OPROM (Option ROM) to enable another slot
See this (Table 28) for the supported installation and that shows that the embedded controller is initiallyh enabled, very likely the reason why you do not see the "Ctrl-H" option:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/ps10265/ps10493/c22m3_sff_specsheet.pdf
And here is the option to change the OPROM and enable a different PCIe slot when having 2 CPUs in the system:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/ps10265/ps10493/c22m3_sff_specsheet.pdf   <<< Check the caveats for changing the OPROM cause you might lose the option to have a VIC card for example.
A step of last resort will be to disable any OPROM not needed (for some customer that means to disable all Option ROMs)
I hope it helps, and let us know if there is any other doubts or if this did not help, but I hoipe it does

  • UCS C240 M4 with Cisco UCS VIC1227 VIC MLOM - Dual Port 10Gb SFP+

    Hi All,
Have a few UCS C-series questions:
If I have a UCS C240 M4 rack server with Cisco UCS VIC1227 VIC MLOM - Dual Port 10Gb SFP+, but do not have fabric interconnect(s), I cannot use the UCS VIC1227 for anything, can I? The VIC ports HAVE to be connected to the FI(s) in order to be integrated with the UCS Manager. There is no local UCS manager software running on the server itself, is there?
It is useless to have this card in the server without the FI(s), isn’t it?
The OS that is going to be installed on the server is not going to see those 10GB ports on the VIC, isn’t it?
And if there are no additional PCIe NICs installed in the server, I am stuck with the two 1GB onboard NICs, is that correct?
    Any input is appreciated.

do not have fabric interconnect(s), I cannot use the UCS VIC1227 for anything, can I?
The VIC 1227 can be used to integrate the server with UCSM, but that does NOT mean that is its unique function... the VIC 1227 is a CNA card that can be used whether your server is in standalone mode (no Fabric Interconnects) or integrated with UCSM.
If the server is not connected to a Fabric Interconnect (FI), it still has CIMC (Cisco Integrated Management  Controller) which can be configured by attaching a monitor to the server and a keyboard, press F8 when you see the Cisco logo and then you can configure the IP, subnet, gateway, NIC mode and others... this may help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHQBvwO7pUU

It is useless to have this card in the server without the FI(s), isn’t it?
It is NOT useless to have the card in the server without the FIs, having the servers integrated only allows you to take advantage of the flexibility of Service Profiles but the VIC card still has the same capabilities whether you have an FI or not.
The OS that is going to be installed on the server is not going to see those 10GB ports on the VIC, isn’t it?
    See above
And if there are no additional PCIe NICs installed in the server, I am stuck with the two 1GB onboard NICs, is that correct?
    Same answer as above

  • C210M2 LSI MegaRAID has slot2 missing, where did it go?

CIMC doesn't have any errors, just seems the Slot:2
, SAS, HDD 135.972GB is missing in action
See attached screen show from MegaRAID BIOS Config Utility.
I have applied the latest host upgrade 1.3.1d.1

I swapped a known good 146GB drive into that slot.  I then swapped the LSI MegaRAID card with a known good (I have a lot of spare parts:) and it seems to be the chassis drvie enclosure, which doesn't seem to be field replaceable. Calling TAC.

  • Cannot enter BIOS or boot from LSI MegaRAID SAS 9271-8i

    Hello,
I have a LSI MegaRAID SAS 9271-8i installed in a C220 M3 (in PCIe1). When I go to CIMC, I can see the adapter there and I can create RAID arrays. I can set the first logical drive to be the boot drive too without a problem. If I boot from ESXi installer it will see the disks and install to them.
The problem is, the server won’t boot from the disks, and I don’t see any problems for the card’s BIOS during boot. I have disabled the on-board RAID controller.
How do I get the server to boot from the RAID card?

    Hi,
Glad to see the issue is resolved now (I never saw your post before) was it that the OptionROM for the PCIe card was not enabled or the boot order was not properly set?

  • VCS installation on UCS C240 using VMWare ESXi 5.5

    Hello to everybody
I have a trouble with installing Cisco UC products on UCS C240. I have VMWare ESXi 5.5. I'll write what I've done.
At first I made Virtual Disk (Raid), but I couldn't enter Netbios configuration for a long time. I pressed CTRL+H and after that I saw screen with shell>. It was my first time I worked with UCS C240 and I didn't saw same screens during UCS C220 configuration. After that I entered exit command and Netbios screen appeared. After that I installed VMWare ESXi, configured it and installed VCS ova template. Everythung worked correct.
BUT... After turning off and on the server VMWare ESXi didn't load, I looked to the console and saw the shell> screen. I think it isn't normal.
What I have to do to load my VMWare and don't see the shell> screen.
    Thank you

Can you check your boot order? And make sure your HDD/RAID comes above the EFI shell?

  • UCS RAID Configuration on UCS C240 M3 TRC2 for UC Applications

    Hi
This UCS server has Twelve 300 GB hard disk. The RAID configuration recommended in Cisco Documentation is to have 2 RAID 5  Volumes 1.36 TB each.
I don't understand this configuration for the following reasons :
I prefer to dedicate a RAID Volume to ESXi and the second RAID Volume for UC Application.
For  UCS C240 M3 TRC3 the First RAID volume should be  a small size (for Example 300 GB with RAID1 ) and the second one about 2 TB with RAID 5
    Why ?
Because in case of problem with ESXi, I can reinstall ESXi, and to recover all My UC applications after ESXi reinstallation.
This kind of configuration was the one use by old C210 M2 (Small RAID 1 volume for ESXi and Larger RAID 5 Volume for UC Applications)
The problem is that with two 1.36 TB Volume , I can install ESXi on the first RAID Volume and UC on second RAID volume. But there is a big waste of Disk Space (about 1 TB )!!!
The problem of changing this RAID recommended Configuration is that TAC consider that we are no longer running on TRC design, so the support is able to be rejected.
Is anybody from Cisco able to explain me the reasons for such RAID Design for UCS C240 M3 TRC2 for UC Applications
    Thanks

You need to go thru your AM, or ask in a partner forum this question, this cannot be addressed at CSC.
And we didn't tell you support would be rejected, we told you that support would fall from a guaranteed performance UC on UCS TRC, to that of a UC on UCS spec based, as changing the RAID would be guidance-only.

  • More HDD Capacity for UCS C240

Dear All, I would like to see your advice
The UCS C240 I configure in CCW contain 24 Drive backplane,
my requirement will be 3 unit of 500G HDD (Raid 5) + 21 Unit of 1TB (RAID 5) = Total already 24 drive.
Since UCS C240 do not have more then 1TB SATA drive to choose in CCW, I am also unable to located any SFF Drive for 2TB or more.
In my situation, what if I would like to expand my disk drive capacity in the future?
(Actually I prefer to place 21 Unit of 2TB of more instead of 1TB, but the maximum capacity I can choose only 1TB)
Hope to have your advice, thanks

    Hi Calvin ,
According the specification for a UCS C240 SFF the maximum capacity for a hard drive is 1 TB.
Actually there is no hard drive with a higher storage capacity than that on that UCS model.
    Please check in here:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/ps10265/ps10493/C240M3_SFF_SpecSheet.pdf
There is another model of the UCS C240 (High Density) which support hard drives for 3 TB:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/ps10265/ps10493/C240M3_LFF_SpecSheet.pdf
    Hope this helps.

  • Assistance Making Arch RAID Driver from Source - LSI MegaRAID 9240-4i

    Hey all-
I've been on Arch for about 6 months now and love it.  However, I just built out a new workstation and need some assistance trying to get my RAID card up and running.  Obviously, Arch Linux isn't going to be officially supported by any manufacturer, so I went with a card that fit the price and feature set I wanted and decided I'll do battle later.  Later is now and I'm a little stuck.  Here's what I have and know:
First, I went to http://www.lsi.com/storage_home/product … index.html and looked at the different drivers they had source code for.  I decided that the Slackware driver is probably the best place to start since rpms and debs are more distro-specific and since between the other two Slackware is more current than Scientific.  I have downloaded and extracted the source for the Slack driver and am in that directory with a dkms.conf, Makefile, megaraid_sas.c, megaraid_sas.h, and Module.supported in it, along with two folders worth of patches and the like.
My understanding is that since this driver isn't going to be available in the Arch Build System, I should follow the guide at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Creating_Packages to make a PKGBUILD.  However, to be fair, I haven't coded since my C++ in college and it's been a while.  Specifically, I am lost at the "Download and test the installation" heading.  How am I to test the installation?  I'm on an Arch box right now and the whole point of this was to get something I could successfully install on Arch.
Ouside of being lost there, I assume that when this all finishes, I will have some module package either megaraid_sas.o or megaraid_sas.ko that I can drop into my install and set to load via rc.conf.
If anyone has any light they can shed on this subject, please reply.  If you need more info from me, please say so, so I can provide it.  I tried to at least give a solid overview in my initial post.

for future reference : the linux kernel supports many raid controllers (adaptec, areca, lsi meagraid sata etc ) check kernel source for details.
I recommend you add a non-raid drive to the megaraid system, and install arch on that drive.
Edit : Dieter says exactly what i wanted to say
Dieter@be wrote:Afaik the megaraid will write metadata on that disk.  So you loose some flexibility, say when your controller breaks.  I have my arch install on a disk which is connected to my motherboard directly. (without raid etc)
Next you should create your own pkgbuild .
This Aur pkgbuild for a highpoint sata raid controller (made by me sometime ago) should help you with writing your own : http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=12865
once you have built the package, use pacman -U to install it.
    modprobe the megaraid_sas module .
check dmesg and/or /dev to see if your raid drives are now detected.
if they are, you can start mounting/accessing/testing the functionality of your raid drives.
Note : it is possible to install archlinux on drives that require an external kernel module, but that makes the process a lot more complicated.

  • LSI Megaraid 9260/9261 driver issue on Solaris x86-64

We have several x4170 M2 machines with either the LSI 9260 or 9261 megaraid cards (same driver) where SUN uses the "SUNWmr_sas" driver, and you can download the latest driver from LSI website as "mr_sas". Using SUN Solaris 10 update 9 with latestl patches, x86 64-bit version .
Created two RAID arrays in the card BIOS (RAID1 using 2 disks and a RAID5 using 6 disks). Each disk is a 146GB 10k RPM SAS drive. The firmware on the card is the latest version from April 2011.
A copy from the RAID1 array to the RAID5 array yields a measly 5MB/s transfer speed. Tried both drivers with the same result. Tried all sorts of RAID array settings with no luck.
Installed Ubuntu Linux 10.04 LTS 64-bit version without touching the RAID array settings and the transfer speed jumped to over 100 MB/s (expected results).
Network copies to a single array and local copies within a single array perform as expected. Only the copy from one array to the other seems to be effected.
This leads me to believe the LSI driver for Solaris is at fault. Any thoughts? Anyone else noticing this poor performance?

    Hi.
    Read thread:
    X4x70 (M1) with extremely slow disk I/O
Try workaround the problem by adding the following line to /etc/system and then reboot:
    set idle_cpu_no_deep_c = 1

  • UCS C240 M3 LFF - Not detecting RAID controller/option ROMs at all?

I've just lodged a service request for this, but as I don't have a service contract I'm not sure how much support I will get from Cisco vs them just replacing the whole unit..
In any case, It's a LFF C240 M3, dual CPU. It was purchased with an LSI2008 SAS Mez card.
    - Mezz card was installed, and all the drives are lighting up, however I am getting no option ROM to boot/see the drives at all. BIOS shows "PCI-E: M" (I'm assuming this is the mezzanine card) as not populated, however I have the option rom set to enabled for this slot. I have no SCU setting, and no software RAID jumper is installed or being used. I have connected the correct SAS cables from the mezz card to the SAS expander.
    - As well as this, I have two PCI-E SSD's that also have option ROMs - these are detected by OS's, however the option roms are not booting despite them being set in BIOS to load.
    - I also have a 10GBE NIC that IS loading its boot rom. Strangely, if I disable the boot rom for the 10GBe NIC, and Enable the boot rom for the PCI-E SSDs, the 10GBE boot rom still loads (If I disable the PCI-E SSD boot roms, the 10GBe boot rom stops loading)
There are possibly 2 issues here - One is that the mainboard/mezz card/both are DoA. The other is that the BIOS is buggy, as enabling and disabling PCI-E slot option roms do not seem to correlate with the correct slots/boot at all.
Any input would be appreciated before I DoA the lot

    Hi Zaira,
The PCIe SSD is a PCI IDE/AHCI controller that has an SSD connected to it.
Further research shows that in AHCI mode, the UCS server will boot the option ROM. The PID is
    VEN: 1B21 DEV: 0612 [0106] SATA Controller [PI 01]
We need to run it in IDE mode however to boot off it. In IDE mode the option ROM does not boot. The PID in IDE mode is:
    VEN: 1B21 DEV: 0611 [0101] IDE Controller [PI 85]
Both ROMS boot fine in all other servers I have tried (SuperMicro, HP and Intel) so I can only assume the UCS is somehow selectively ignoring this boot rom by the PID?
Is there anything I can do here?
    Regards,
    Elliott
