Umm....I think Apple TV just bricked my iMac :(

I was syncing my Apple TV for the first time to my iMac G5 when all of the sudden the Apple TV froze. I went to check the iMac, and found it to be tuned off. I thought that was pretty weird but just figured something odd had happened. I turned off the Apple TV and unplugged it from the network, then went and turned the iMac back on. It got up to the login window, then promptly turned itself right back off again. I'm starting to get a little worried at this point, so I change the power cord and try again. This time it let me log in, then died when the Finder loaded. I took it out of my surge protector and plugged it directly into a wall outlet. No change. I booted up in single user mode and ran fsck on it - the drive insists it's fine. I unplugged it and left it alone over night. This morning I got about 5 minutes out of it (enough time to get some recent data that I - like an idiot - hadn't backed up yet off) before it shut itself down once more.
So can anyone think of any way, shape or form Apple TV could have just killed my iMac? It's not even possible for it to have interacted with the power system management in OS X is it? If it had just hosed the hard drive inside the iMac why would it turn the power off? I thought I'd see if anyone here had any ideas before the inventible visit to my local Apple Authorized Service Provider

It could just be a coincidence. Which model do you have how to identify your iMac? Have you tried resetting the PRAM?
Please post back, depending on your model you might be eligible for either of Apple'sRev A and Rev B repair extension.

  • Apple TV just bricked after update

My Apple TV is bricked and needs to connect to itunes... I don't own a Mac or PC. I do have an iphone 5s and an ipad 2. Can I piggyback my Apple TV onto these devices do I need to go to an apple store?

Here are some steps and notes to try:
MANY people are reporting they've had to try multiple micro USB cables to find one that works. I got one that worked from a neighbor.
For clarification, this needs to be a "micro" USB, not a "mini" USB
Some people have also reported they've had to try the Restore process more than once.
    1. Unplug Apple TV and move it to your computer running latest version of iTunes.
    2. Quit iTunes if running.
    3. Plug micro USB cable to the back of the Apple TV.
    4. Power the Apple TV using  the AC cable.
    5. iTunes shoud either launch itself (a good indication that the micro USB cable you're using is compatible), or launch iTunes.
    6. Click Restore. Software will download and install (big file).

  • HT204053 Hi I've just purchased a iMac which is great, my problem is that I've a apple id account and also my wife has one, is there any way we can have two accounts i.e. separate accounts on the iMac with individual iTunes accounts, appreciate help pleas

Hi ive just purchased an IMac and encountered an issue i didnt think of put hopefully someone can help? Ive a apple account and also the wife both with seperate itunes accounts etc. Is it possible to have two profiles with seperate accounts on our system, appreciate any help..

I believe you can accomplish this by setting up separate user profiles for each of you on your Mac (System Preferences>Users & Groups (click the lock symbol if locked and provide the administrator name and password, then click the "+").  That should allow you to sign into separate iCloud accounts and maintain separate iTunes libraries within your respective user accounts.

  • My hard drive failed. My applications were on the drive including Excel, Word, and Powerpoint. Apple told me I could pull everything from the failed drive. I tried that but the drive is bad so I can't get to anything. Do you think Apple will reinstall?

My hard drive failed. My applications were on the drive including Excel, Word, and Powerpoint. Apple told me I could pull everything from the failed drive. I tried that but the drive is bad so I can't get to anything. The Office package was installed/included when I purchased the Mac. Does anyone think Apple will provide me with the Office package? Thank you!

Thank you everyone. I apologize to confusing all but I am up to date and running OS X 10.8.2.  It's possible I purchased the key for Office but I don't think so although it was 3-4 years ago. I guess I will stop in the Apple Store and just ask. I may just buy the new bundle anyway to get the most updated.
I have read there are issues with the MS Office bundle running on our latest OS, is that true?
Thank you all!!! You've been great!

How do I gift one song from an album I've already bought? It's not working from my iPhone or my ipad.
Would think apple would make this easier. Total beat down.
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers.

Find the song in the iTunes Store and gift it!
I just did that successfully with a song I previously bought, and it works just fine:
Just click the down facing arrow to the right of "Play".

  • Sometimes Apple TV just disappears from iTunes & Other Issues?

    Hi. Love my Apple TV.
    Except, some issues:
First, sometimes the Apple TV just falls off the network. It doesn't see my computers, and the computers don't see it. I then go to the status about page, and I see it's not on the network. So then I have to click on the network again, and re-enter the password, which takes a long time and hopefully no one is around and sees the password. ha-ha. I guess it does this like once a week or once every 2 weeks.
Next, sometimes it will be just playing a lame tiny little AAC song, and it will just stop playing it and go back to the list of songs, it gets 4-5 bars in the signal strength.
Next, stuff on the hard drive of Apple TV plays worst than streaming. Example: on the hard drive part if you pause, play from pause, or even try to fast forward it hangs up several seconds. However, on the streaming function, pausing, fast forward, etc. is smooth. Is it normal for that to occur?
I think that is about all the questions I have at this time. really appreciate any suggestion or experiences you might have to share. Thanks.

There are some issues with some software encoding movies for the tv. I believe some software incorrectly encodes the wrong proportion of i, p and b frames in accordance with the mpeg4/10 main profile standards. Streaming video seems to escape this problem, I'm guessin' because of the way it buffers the stream. Synced movies also seem to escape the problem at low bit-rates, but encounter difficulties at higher rates.
Could you tell us what your source is, what software you are using and what settings you are using.
If this is the cause I'm not sure whether running the movie through the built in itunes converter will sort things for you or not, or whether you may need to look at another encoder.

  • Do you think Apple is reading this  forum?

I've heard that Apple doesn't really monitor the forums (at least the don't respond to posts). But if I were Steve Jobs, I would have several folks dedicated to just reading what everyone is saying about the new iPhone. Even if they are only silent observers, it would give them a clue as to what the problems and major complaints are. Personally, if I were Jobs, I would be ****** that EDGE is so slow. Add to that the exclusivity contract they have with AT&T. Hopefully they have a SLA (Service Level Agreement) for a certain level of acceptable service, and if they can't deliver that the deal is off. Who knows. I just hope they are interested enough to see what's going on here in the forums.
    Alfredo

That is very cool. I am glad to hear that. I think Apple needs to know about how bad AT&T is. I know we're stuck with them, but I can see Steve Jobs giving them **** for messing up a good thing. Unless no one wants to tell him about "bad news" I realize that most people that are happy don't post here. I have read some good things this time around.

my internet connection is incredibly slow - I know it is not the fault of the modem as other devices are fast. This article was suggested to me as a solution. I think they were just trying to get me off their back. Anyone else experience this?

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
    and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here:   http://www.opendns.com/home-solutions ) and further independent information can be read here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
    and here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The later versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:

  • You think Apple will give us something for this?

Do you think Apple will give us something in return for this chaos? Like maybe a free game or something? I have read soooo many stories and man its pretty messed up. Ive read ppl saying that "apple did not force them to update" but when ur iPhone says "New Update Available - 2.0" and you've waited since January for this, then they say that it will be here in March, then they say June then finally July....what do you think? There are some innocent people who just updated and were victims of this. This really s u c k s i know. but do you think apple will give us something for this?

Some of you people are clueless. You act as if Apple is completely blameless. here's a newsflash for you: If a company makes a product available, they have a responsibility to the consumer that it works properly. That's the basic idea behind express and implied warranty laws. "Oh, but it's free...so you can't complain!" - It's not free, and you're not very smart. Apple provides software updates to keep consumers happy, and keep us using their products. it's built in to the cost of the iPhone. A cost of doing business, if you will. If it wasn't beneficial to them, why would they spend countless man-hours developing the code? because it's a happy, shiny world? Yeah, exactly.
"But no one forced you to download the update!" - And no one forced them to make it available before the infrastructure was ready either. It's not as if Apple is new to this game. They had issues at launch. And I don't know about your job, but at mine...if I know I'm going to have issues, I make dang well sure I've got my bases covered next time around, so I have ZERO repeats. and given the scope of their marketing, it's not like Apple can say "Hurr, we didn't know it would be so popular, hur hur.".

I just bought an Imac. I have an ipad2 and an iphone 4s. My wife has an iphone 4s. Both of us have different apple ids. Would you recommend a new one or use an existing id?  Why?

It is best to stop making all new apple IDs, as software is permanently tied to them, and you can't converge them. Make differnt ones if you plan to get divorced though....

  • I just got an imac and i can't access my itunes.  my old computer was a f***ing dell, ugh.  can i do this or do I have to create a new apple account?

just got an imac and I cant access my itunes.  old computer was a dell, do I have to create a new apple account?

Apple does not want you to have two iTunes accounts so perhaps it would be better to cancel the account you used with your Dell and launch a new account for your nice new iMac.   If you cannotmake contact with the original details go to ...
http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Express lane followed by iTunes > iTunes store.
From there you could negotiate the cancellation process.

  • I have two AppleID's. Can I set up a new Apple ID just for document syncing in iCloud? How?

I have two AppleID's. Both use known email addresses. I need absolute security for documents. Can I set up a new Apple ID just for document syncing in iCloud? How?

Sorry, I did not mean to imply that security was non-existant or horrible, just it is online, so no absolutes.
iCloud is really not useful, IMO, for collaborating as only you or your AppleID enabled devices can access the files.
I have multiple online storage accounts with the common free services, but my most used is www.box.net.  Many document apps will readily support it, and even if one does not, you can use the box.net app itself to access files, then open them in the app usually.  And you can share your online folders, with reasonable controls on access to keep control of who can see (and upload or download) what.
A lot of people I know use dropbox as well, but they are usually using paid accounts (often their company sets one up for them to use to exchange files with clients) and I don't know how much better is the security on a paid dropbox account versus a free one.  I suspect the free ones are on a par with box.net.
You could also use add security by using some sort of PGP or other encryption tools to encrypt files put up on the shared folder(s).  You'd exchange public keys with your colleagues so they could decrypt those files once they download them.  That may be overkill for many peoples needs though.
Another option, if you have an online hosting account, is to get one that offers SFTP access and use that for sharing files (the downside of that is having to distribute the password to colleagues, so you could loose control of it if one of them is careless or thoughtless with it).  It seems more and more document-type apps for iOS are supporting generic FTP and SFTP as well as the popular free online storage solutions.

  • I am new to Apple and just got an iPad Air.  Any suggestions on migrating my Windows Vista Contacts and IE Favorites to the iPad?  The suggested method of using iCloud is restricted to Windows 7 and 8.  Thanks.

I am new to Apple and just got my iPad Air.  Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can migrate Contacts from Windows Mail and Favorites from IE that are on a Windows Vista desktop ?   The recommendation that I have seen are via using iCloud but that does not appear to work for Windows Vista, just Windows 7 and 8.  Thanks.

You could try putting your contacts in through Gmail and then signing in with that Gmail on your iPad. You could also try searching for some kind of app that will transfer data easily (I'll look into it and update it if I find anything). I don't have any Microsoft products so I'm not sure if I'm much help but I'll definitely try. You'll definitely love coming to Apple it's much simpler and easier!

  • Why isn't my ios7 compatible with iOS 10.5.8 this is ridiculous I spent a lot of money on all my apple products just to have to buy an iOS upgrade to sync my music

All my products are apple I just bought iPhone 5 which is ios7 my iMac is osx 10.5.8.  Apple are you kidding me that I have to upgrade to a new osx just to upload my music from my osx 10.5.8???? Must you selfishly greedily make me upgrade just to upload my songs from iTunes? Bert dissappointed in you apple.  Why not just make iTunes compatible with the ios7????? Really?? You need to fix this problem make iTunes from my osx 10.5.8 compatible with my iPhone ios7.   ***? Frustrating that an apple product is not compatable with another apple product which I spent ridiculous amounts of money for both my iMac and iPhone 5 isn't it enough that I spent ober 2000$ on my iMac and my iPhone just to have it not able to upload my songs??? What do u suggest I do buy snow leopard? Really? If you don't fix this problem how can you expect anyone to keep buying your product I mean come on I know marketing strategies and whatnot but if I spent 2000 + on my iPhone and IMAc should it not at least allow me to use my iTunes with my brand new iPhone and why not just make a dl for 10.5.8 do you really need me to buy snow leapord? Really? What is the meaning of this it is very frustrating seem like you guys purposefully make me and everyone spend more money for no reason.

    1) The people responding in this forum are just other Apple product users like you, not Apple itself.  Apple Support Communities is primarily an end-user to end-user (i.e., users like you helping other users) technical issue support feature. Feedback will truly get more attention if you send it using:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
    2)  At some stage developers decide it isn't worth the expense of supporting older technology. If I had my way you could still connect iOS7 to OS9, but Apple has decided to make the limit OS 10.6.8  Nor do I like that I can't get spare parts for my 33 year old car...
    Suggestions...
If you are not going to always be running the newest technology always read software requirements before doing any upgrades.  I run a 12 year old computer and yes, I see there are things I can't run (many), but I also then avoid buying any incompatible new technology.  The system requirements are printed on the side of the box (albeit in 9 point medium gray font on light gray box   )  Do not expect the Apple Store people to check with you about your computer first.  I bet half of them were still in grade school when my computer was produced and none of them could possibly imagine anybody would run anything older than 6 years (probably not even that, more like 4).
Why not buy Snow Leopard?  Of course you do not say what model computer you are using, but if you can run Snow Leopard on your computer there's no advantage to staying with Leopard.  Snow Leopard costs $20 which is minimal compared to you now no longer being able to sync your phone.
Snow Leopard disc source - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
I'd swear I posted almost this identical post two hours ago...
If you can't/don't want to upgrade your computer, you have 30 days to return the phone I believe.
