Unable to connect to a computer in the local network

I've set up an older notebook as a server, connected via WiFi, will be called "server" in this text. Then I have my normal work notebook, called "notebook" in this text.
Both the server and the notebook are connected to the router. The server has additionally a no-ip.org domain.
server ip: 192.168.1.14, notebook ip: 192.168.1.15, router ip: 192.168.1.1
Now just after rebooting and after resetting the wifi connection, I can ping and ssh the server from the notebook.
After some time though something strange happens...
I can't connect to the server from my notebook, neither through the mDNS address nor through 192.168.1.14, all I get is "ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.14 port 22: No route to host".
But if I ssh to the server from my notebook via the no-ip.org domain, it works perfect.
I can then ping 192.168.1.1 from both the server and the notebook, but I can neither ping 192.168.1.15 from the server nor 192.168.1.14 from the notebook...
They lose each others ARP entries, too.
What might the reason for this strange behaviour be?
Where's the problem? SSH config? Server config? Router config?
What I tried until now:
- Letting the server regularly restart its network connection - it seems to help sometimes, but not "forever". Additionally it's a terrible solution.
- Letting the server regularly restart avahi-daemon: Oddly enough using that both servers have each others mDNS and MAC-Addresses all the time, but still aren't able to connect.
-Letting the server regularly ping the router: Well, that didn't help either. That just works anyway.

The router is a Zyxel NBG-419N. I have access to logs, but I don't think they're too useful.
I'm using DHCP, but have MAC-to-IP-mappings.

  • Can't disconnect from other computer on the local network

We have several Mac's (6) running in our small office, connected via wifi and ethernet.  One of the computers we call the "warehouse" and is used as our storage unit and to run 3 filemaker databases.  This warehouse is still running OS X 7, while the others are all running Mavericks.
    The Issue:
When we click on "SHARED" or through "DEVICES" the warehouse shows up as connected via VNC.  If I click "Disconnect" nothing happens.  If I go the "GO" menu and use "CONNECT TO SERVER" and enter the static IP we have the warehouse setup with it connects fine.  Then if I go back to the "SHARED" it still says "Connected as:VNC" and if I hit disconect it will kill my connection but the view below still stays the same and the only choice it ever gives me is "DISCONNECT"!  I've rebooted the watrehouse and my Mac.
Now, if I go to another computer (13" macbook air)...and click "SHARED" nothing shows up....The only way I can connect is using the "go" menu and the IP.
This has only been since upgrading to Mavericks.

    Hi
    I am having same issue.
Try to forece quit the Finder process using Activity Monitor.
    Good Luck

  • Unable to Connect to Mounted Volumes via AFP; Local Network

Server's name is Boing. If I try: Connect to Server: afp://Boing.local I'm given a list of possible volumes. However, this list only includes my home directory and every user's Public Folder. I am an admin user:
    uid=516(mnewman) gid=516(mnewman) groups=516(mnewman),101(com.apple.sharepoint.group.1),105(com.apple.sharepoint. group.3),103(com.apple.accessscreensharing),98(_lpadmin),102(com.apple.access_ssh),81(_appserveradm),79(appserverusr),80(admin),20(staff),106(com.apple.sharepoint.group.4),104(com.appl e.sharepoint.group.2)
I should have access to all mounted volumes:
    drwxrwxr-t 56 root admin - 1972 May 17 13:39 /Volumes/Banana
    drwxrwxr-x 13 mnewman mnewman - 510 Jan 14 09:17 /Volumes/Farang

    drwxrwxr-t 17 root admin - 646 May 17 13:39 /Volumes/Lime
If I ssh into Boing, I can get to everything.
If a different admin user connects to Boing via afp she can get to everything.
What has happened to my account that permits me afp access only to public shares?

    Amazing:
I used Apple's Workgroup Manager to add a short name (mgnewman) to my account.
Using that short name I can now connect to Boing using the Finder's Go->Connect To Server...
and, all the mounted volumes are shown.
Workgroup Manager shows "mnewman" as my default short name. But, it doesn't work right
for afp connections either through the GUI or command line. But, my newly added short user
name works just fine. (Oddly, my Dot Mac e-mail address, also shown as a short user name in
    Workgroup Manager, also works....)
I suspect that the Directory Services database is somehow corrupt.
Is there a way to rebuild it?

  • My computer in my local network

I recently bought a mac pro and am using an airport extreme base station. I need to access my computer on the local network but somehow I have made it invisible! I think i turned something off but now I need to make it visible again to other computers. Does anyone know how to do this. at the moment I have file sharing on but nothing is coming up on the network.
    thanks

    On the Mac Pro:
1.) Check System Preferences -> Security -> Firewall -> Advanced.
Is Enable Stealth Mode checked? If so, remove the check mark.
    2.) Check System -> Preferences -> Sharing -> File Sharing -> Options.
    Is AFP enabled?
If yes, make note of the computer name, go to the other computer (the one you want to connect to the Mac Pro) - Go to Finder - Click GO - Connect to server and input the sharing name.
    Hope that helps.

My iPod Touvh 4th Generation won't turn on. It will not charge even after I used a few chargers and will not connect to a computer. The Home button is broken and I don't know if the Lock/Sleep button is now broken or stuck as well. I believe there may be a problem with the battery or the backlight. I've had my screen replaced once by some stooges. What should I do?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
When it  says place the iPod in recoverymode use one of these programs.
    For PC
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot
    and
    RecBoot tip
    For MAC or PC
    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Issue with re-connecting a Client Computer to the Server Essentials R2 2012

I have an issue re-connecting a Client Computer to Server Essentials R2 2012.  The Client Computer in question was connected to the Sever originally.  I started getting Error Messages indicating that I was running out of storage room.  I
had been wanting to re-configure this Server with additional Hard Drives for some time, but something else always came up first.  Now, I was forced to address the problem.  I shut down the Server and added additional Hard Drives and while I was at
it I replaced the original Hard Drive that the Server Operating System was on with a much smaller Hard Drive, and reinstalled Server Essentials on that Drive.  Everything was working fine and the Server Back-up went fine to an external Hard Drive.
I was ready to re-install my Client Computers.  I started with my primary Production Computer first.  The Connector Software seemed to install fine, but as I moved through the Connection Wizard I received the following Error Message:  "Cannot
connect this computer to the network.  This computer is already connected to another Windows Server Network.  Before connecting this computer to the Windows Server Essentials network, you must remove this computer from the current network.
To resolve this issue, contact the person responsible for your network".  I am the Administrator.  I removed the Connector Software following the instructions in the "Troubleshooting connecting computers to the Server", but I continue
to get the Error Message whenever I attempt to re-connect the Client Computer.  I have not attempted to connect any of the other three Client Computers yet as I need to resolve this issue first on my primary production machine.  Where am I going
wrong?  Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi PARADOX-RED,
Based on the error messages that you provided, please remove the connector software from Control Panel completely. Then, in the problematic computer, please locate
to: Control Panel-> System-> select Change settings. And select the Computer Name tab in the System Properties dialog box, click
change button. Then in the Computer Name/Domain Changes dialog box, please take the computer out of the domain as a workgroup, and rejoin in new domain.
Please check if this issue can be solved. If it still exists, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Justin Gu

That sounds like you've engaged one of the automatic syncing options for your nano.
Plug the nano in, and go into the Device screen for the nano in itunes. Is "manually manage ..." unchecked? If so, check the box for it, and click okay. Disconnect and reconnect the nano. Is the content on the nano able to be selected in your iTunes now?

I am trying to update ipod touch from ios 4.3.2 to ios 6.1.3.  I have it connected to my computer, and the summary in itunes indicates the update is available.  However, when I click "update", it opens Windows Explorer and waits for a file name to open.

I am not at that computer now, but I did check via windows update & with the check updates menu choice in the itunes program  - neither indicated a newer version of itunes is available. (it is a vista computer).
The itunes software on the computer displays my ipod & the current ios (4.3.2), and indicates a newer ios is available (6.1.3). When I choose "update", I am taken to Windows Exploer and prompted to choose a file to open. it is as if the "update" button has the incorrect code attached to it.
The ipod is working, but there are several app I would like to install, but I can't with the current ooperating system.

  • I have just tried to upgrade to the latest version of itunes, and my ipad was connected to my computer at the time. The upgrade crashed part way through. I now cannot start itunes as it says MSVCR80.dll is missing. Anyone got any ideas?

I was upgrading to the latest version of itunes, and my new ipad mini was connected to my computer at the same time, try to sync for the first time. The upgrade crashed part way through, and now itunes won't load and I get an error message saying MSVCR80.dll is missing. How do I do about reinstalling this file?

Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

  • Can't connect to another computer on the network with 'good' password

    Hi;
Out of the blue my wife can no longer connect to my machine on our local network using her normal password. She gets the error 'Sorry, the password you entered is incorrect. Please re-enter it' at the login box. In testing her password it seems fine for all else - can log into her machine fine, can log into other computers on our network OK, do administrator things, etc.....just no long into mine.
I can log into my machine from hers using my account info, so the connection is fine it seems. It just won't accept her password for this single action.
Have repaired permissions on both machines, restarted several times, etc. all to no avail. Went to look into her keychain to see if something was amiss there but did not really see anything that pointed to this particular interaction (perhaps it is stored elsewhere?)
Nothing out of the ordinary happened to her nor my machine that I can think of. Her machine is still on 10.3.9 and I'm on 10.4.7.
Scratching my head on this one, so any help much apprecated.
    ~Roger

After considerable testing I've determined that the problem is in the sharing settings on my computer and not the password on the other computer. I've not solved the issue but clarified the questions I have and posted under the 'networking and sharing' discussion in hopes of some help.

iPad requires Wifi (or 3G /LTE) to connect to the Internet. You cannot connect a USB modem to the iPad.
You can create your own WiFi hotspot through your computer for your iPad to connect to, if your computer supports this functionality. All Wifi Macs and many Wifi PCs do. Check your computer manual for how to do it.

  • HT1296 I want to synch my address book using the usb connection to my computer, but the IPad doesn't appear on the desk top?

I want to synch my address book to my I-Pad using the usb connection to my computer, but the IPad doesn't show up on the desk top or in I-Tunes. Any suggestions?

Try again to install the latest version of iTunes; http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Otherwise when your iPad is connected with your computer and iTunes open try several times; Keep the Powerbutton and the Homebutton pressed at the same time until you see the Apple logo on your iPad screen.

    Click OK.
If that doesn't work try changing channels on your Router.
