Unable to connect to Total Broadband suddenly - re...

I should start off by saying the only reason I am not using a Home Hub with my Total Broadband is because about a year ago I had to get it replaced and BT in their incompetance managed to send me a business hub instead.
I was going to send it back but then I read on the forums (see posts like http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-Speed-Connection-Issues/BT-Broadband-with-non-BT-Home-Hub/m-p/350297/h... that any username/pass would work so I just kept it as I needed the connection to work without waiting another week for a new replacement.
So for a year or more I've been running fine with a business hub using some [email protected] username and junk password.
Last night, in the middle of watching something on iPlayer my internet suddenly cut out and when I look at the hub, the Internet light is now Red (even though the 'Broadband light is green). The hub status page tells me DSL is connected fine but no internet connection.
And for a while at least (can't reproduce now for some reason) When I tried to visit a web page, I got redirected to the hub gateway page saying 'unable to connect your broadband with that username/password please set up your connection details correctly' or something to that effect.
Needless to say, I've tried rebooting and reseting the hub many times and tried every possible suggested username/password pair I can find online for people running non-homehub hardware, despite the fact that apparently it shouldn't matter on a Total Broadband line which authenticate by phone number anyway.
There are no reported outages in my area and I have a perfectly fine DSL connection according to the hub, just no Internet/PPP connection.
I'm really hoping someone here has some good advice about this situation because I am absolutely sure if I have to phone BT customer support it will take me an hour just to convince them I don't have a home hub but no it's not my fault for using third party hardware because they supplied the **bleep** thing.
Has anyone else had the same? Can a fault on the line cause this or has BT suddenly changed their authentication scheme overnight? Given a lack of others complaining about this I guess not.
Any help gladly accepted although I feel I may have to grit my teeth and pick up the phone soon...

In case it helps anyone else:
BT live chat were helpfull and suggested using [email protected] and a host of other settings.
That didn't change anything so I'm getting a replacement (hopefully a homehub this time).
I'm still none the wiser about why this suddenly happened - it's plausibly a fault in the hub but given the fine DSL connection it seems likely that is not the issue.
But never mind. If the new hub works I'm happy enough.
And after my comments about BT phone support, I feel I should say that the live chat experience was significnatly better although I guess for most people it is not an option (as they don't have an alternate internet connection!).
Thanks imjolly for the reponse.

  • I have a 5th generation iPod touch that is suddenly "unable to connect to the server", not entirely sure what this means but I'm unable to connect to the internet even though I'm connected to Wifi. Can't connect to iTunes on my pc either. Any input?

I have a 16GB iPod touch that suddenly stopped connecting to the internet last night. Everytime I try to get mail, or access anything with Safari I get a message saying that it can't connect to the server. Also I've plugged it in to my home computer but it won't connect to iTunes either. I haven't updated to iOS8 yet as I didn't have enough space for it and I had planned on deleting all my music files, updating the software and putting whatever music I could fit back on to the device afterward, but now I'm hesitant to do that as I have no way to get any of the files back onto the device. Could this be because I haven't updated to iOS8 yet? I've been having other problems such as apps crashing unexpectedly lately as well, for example my music shuts off randomly and apps such as Twitter and Tumblr and a few others crash on launch. I'm definitely not a genius when it comes to technology by any means, so I have no idea what's causing this problem or how to fix it, any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • I am new to IPod touch and really enjoying it.  BUT.  All of a sudden I am unable to connect to my home wireless network nor any hot spots.  Did not have any trouble in 1st month and yet something seems to have changed.  Any suggestions as to what ?

I am new to IPod Touch and enjoying but all of a sudden (after about a month of connection) I am unable to connect to either my home wirless or hotspots outside of home.  It would appear that a setting has changed but have no idea how to determine.  Any suggestions ?

NO I did not and thank you very much for the advice.  My problem was stated incorrectly in that while I am able to connect to the wireless from that point on I am unable to connect to the internet.  I will check the article referred to.

  • Unable to connect via airport all of a sudden

Unable to connect to the internet via airport all of a sudden. No changes to modem or router or network settings of macbook etc. Other devices in the house can connect just fine, but called cable support to verify and all is fine on the DSL end. Cannot download updates w/o internet connectivity. Have tried going thru the motions of setting up airport again and cannot get past the DHCP (can't remember exact letters at the moment) as my carrier is not a PPoE. Aside from reinstalling the OS to see if that will fix, does anyone else have any suggestions? Apparently this happens more often than I thought based upon other posts. Thank you!

Thank you for your help and it was a big help. I removed Norton software firewall, and firefox began to work. I thank you for your help and suggestion.

  • My iPhone 5 is suddenly unable to connect to my home wifi

    Hi,
Please can you help. My iPhone 5 has suddenly stopped being able to connect to my home wifi, unless I am standing right next to the rooter. If I take it into another room my iPhone 5 won't connect, it is able to see the network, but says unable to connect. My iPhone 4 and ipad is able to connect in all other rooms in the house still , where my 5 used to be able to connect. How can I fix this, it is clearly the phone an not the wifi.
    I have already-
    Restarted the phone,
    Reset the phone
    Reset the phone network settings
    Reset the rooter
    Thanks

This is the exact same issue i am having. I just posted a question a minute ago. I wonder what is happening??

  • HT204409 Suddenly my ipad seems unable to connect to our wifi. All other devices are working normally. Have I accidentally done something or is it a fault with my ipad ?

Suddenly my ipad is unable to connect to our wifi. It buffers all the time?
All other devices are working normally. Is this a fault wityh my ipad or have I inadvertantly altered some setting?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Suddenly unable to connect to wireless network...exhausted all fixes

I’ve got an odd problem with my two-week old MacBook Pro and its connection to my wireless network. I’ve done what I think is pretty exhaustive troubleshooting, but remain baffled. Here’s the story.
This morning I connected to my wireless network (DSL 2WIRE modem/router) with no problem. This afternoon I returned and Airport refused to connect, giving me the error message, “Airport is unable to connect to the wireless network…” The network shows up as being available, but when I attempt to connect, it wont. (I didn’t make any changes or install any programs this morning).
    Here’s what I’ve done:
    [1] Restarted the router
    [2] Repaired permissions
[3] Deleted the network’s entry in Keychain Access
[4] Re-entered my WEP code (assuring it is in correctly; I’ve tried both with the “$” and without)
[5] Used interface robustness and without.
[6] Attempted to join the network from the System Preferences>Network.Airport route.
[7] Created a new account and tried connecting.
    Other tidbits of information:
[1] Another MacBook in the house connects to the network with no problem.
[2] My MacBook can connect to another (unsecured) network that I can “see” in my house.
So, it would seem my Airport card is working okay.
    Any ideas??

Some more info (in case anyone is listening...)
I tried turning off the WEP code and could connect. (Since I share files on my home network, this isn't a "solution").
I also tried Resetting the MacBook Pro System Management Controller (SMC)(See: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319). I did this (I think -- there wasn't any indication that the reset "took"), but alas -- no luck.
I gave Apple Care a call, but the support guy, while courteous and all, didn't have anything to offer other than telling me to take it in to an Apple Store for a repair (clearly it isn't a hardware issue).
    Heeellllppppp!

  • On my other compuyer (Windows Vista) firefox is unable to connect. This is all of a sudden but all day.

When clicking on my firefox icon on my wifes Windows Vista computer, I get an "Unable to connect" error. More specifically
"Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at en-us.start3.mozilla.com". The network is working because internet explorer works fine. This just started this morning and continues all day.

Thank you for your help and it was a big help. I removed Norton software firewall, and firefox began to work. I thank you for your help and suggestion.

  • AzCopy worked, suddenly stopped working, unable to connect to the remote server

AzCopy was working fine, I was transferring about 670 files to my Azure Files storage account on "https://blah.file.core.windows.net/myshare" (that's not the real account), then it stopped after about 400 files.
Now it continually gives the error "Error parsing destination location
https://blah.file.core.windows.net/myshare: Unable to connect to the remote server."
However it works from a different computer with a completely different IP address in another part of the country.
I am 100% sure my azcopy command is correct, because it worked for about 400 files then stopped, and the exact same command no longer works.  I have tried it with both the primary and secondary keys.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled azcopy 4.1
    and that doesn't help.
Is Azure blocking IPs somehow?  What could be wrong?

  • V4.0.1 suddenly stopped working ("unable to connect to server") while other browsers still work

Dell Dimension desktop, running Windows XP Pro, sp3; Pentium 4 2.8 GHz; 1 GB RAM; DSL on home LAN.
Have used Firefox almost exclusively, but it just stopped working today. No new applications installed. Downloaded and reinstalled Firefox to no avail.
Am able to access all sites using both Safari and Windows Explorer on the same machine.
When requesting a page, it immediately gives the error:
    "Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at..."
Doesn't take any time to try to connect, to find the server, etc.

That is an indication that a firewall is blocking the new version of Firefox. For details see [[Firefox cannot load websites but other programs can]].

  • Suddenly unable to connect - WRT54G

I have a Linksys WRT54G router connected to a PC.  2nd PC connects fine via wireless adapter.  1 laptop connects fine.  Newest laptop connected fine until 4 days ago.  Now it shows the wireless network with full signal, but is unable to connect for more than 30 seconds to 3 minutes at a time with long gaps of no connectivity between. I am able to connect to other wireless networks with no lag or drop, outside my home.
I have: reset router, powered down and powered up modem & router, changed SSID from default name, turned off firewalls and antivirus (back on since nothing changed), disabled MAC and Security Mode on router, updated drivers, restored the laptop to a date before the problem occured.
Out of ideas and very hopeful that there is a fix.  Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

First of all, set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed.  (If you have a long list, this might be the sole cause for your problem.)  Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
Some users have reported improved wireless performance by switching from to WPA encryption.
If you continue to have problems, try the following:
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Real Mess with Total Broadband Package installatio...

I ordered BT Total Broadband and Vision package in July 2012, including Home Install for the BT Vision, which I paid for.
The telephone engineer and Vision engineer appointments were arranged to take place on the same day - 20/8/12.
However, BT inexplicably cancelled this date via email, and re-scheduled the installations for 24/8.
Then BT cancelled the telephone engineer's appointment, saying it would not now be necessary as our line had been tested and was working (we were previously with Virgin.)
On 20/8/12 a Vision TV engineer suddenly turned up out of the blue, but obviously could not install the TV service, as our phone & broadband service were not due to go live until 24/8.
BT had apparently not conveyed this change of date to the Vision engineer. I told him of our revised date of 24/8, he said he would 'keep an eye on things' and I therefore assumed he would be returning on the date arranged by BT.
    It is now 24/8.
I have installed the broadband myself, which is working fine, as is the wireless connection.
But that's the only thing that has gone smoothly.  I cannot receive any incoming calls at all (I can only make outgoing calls) and two of my three phone sockets have been completely dead since BT took over.
I managed to book a telephone engineer for tomorrow (25/8) to look at the lines; I obviously did need that telephone engineer's appointment after all, then.
And no Vision engineer has turned up to install the TV service as arranged, and as I paid for.
I rang the call centre in India who told me there was no record of a Vision Home Install appointment and that i would need to do this myself! I replied that I had booked one, it had been confirmed and I had even paid for it.
They then put me through to a person who I can only describe as a cocky 'gentleman' apparently in the UK with quite an attitude (I asked for his name and he gave a first name which I won't mention here) who apparently books engineers.
He told me that as my timeslot had now been missed and they had no way of knowing which the engineer had been assigned (and the engineer had not contacted me to let me know there was a problem) he could not give the engineer a b*****king and said in not so many words that it was basically my tough luck the engineer hadn't showed and I now would have to wait another week until 31/8/12 for the next available appointment to have my Vision service installed.
I have worked in CS and had I ever used such language to a customer (even in a non-confrontational way) I would have been fired on the spot.
This 'gentleman' refused give out the phone no. of engineers so that I could contact them direct.
I pointed out that I had taken a day off work for this installation and would now be forced to take another day off, so after this, how could I be confident that an engineer would actually turn up in a week's time? I then asked for email confirmation of the new appointment so that at least I would have somethnig to refer back to, but was told he could not send an email (somewhat strange for a world-class communication company?) but could send a text confirmation via mobile phone.
I have received this but still have no way of knowing if I'll be taking another day off work for nothing if the Vision engineer does not turn up - and I will still not have the TV service that I am paying for; nor indeed any TV service at all.
I asked for the content of our conversation to be put in writing - either via email or letter - but this was also refused.
I then asked for his superior's name to escalate a complaint and he gave me a (first) name which actually could have been either real or fictitious - I have no idea. I asked to be put through to him but was informed that it would take 48-72 hours to 'raise a form' to be able to do that!
This is totally unnacceptable;  BT has made it my problem that they have failed to keep any record of who this invisible Vision engineer was and I do not see why I should be the one bearing the brunt of this inefficiency.  It is not of my making, neither is it my fault that the installation work is outsourced and as I cannot arrange appointments myself directly, I have no control over the situation and have no choice but to rely on BT to do it correctly on my behalf. I really hope that this is not indicative of things to come, and the kind of service that I left Virgin for. If it is, I will be leaving BT as soon as my contract is up.
PLEASE, is there anything at all that the mods can do (or anyone in the UK that they can refer me to) to sort out this mess, gee things along so I don't have to wait another week when maybe even then no one will turn up to install my Vision service, and tell me how I can make someone actually take ownership of this fiasco? And any other relevant advice?
    Most grateful for any help.

  • IPad mini doesn't detect wifi/unable to connect

    Hello,
I've had my iPad mini since March 2014. It's been working perfectly until last Friday, when it suddenly stopped connecting to my home wifi network. Upon closer inspection, I found that the iPad doesn't even detect the home network anymore. I tried all the solutions listed on here: resetting network settings, rebooting, resetting all settings - except a total restore.
At times it started detecting the network but then when I try to connect it says "unable to connect". I tried making a hotspot out of my iPhone 3G and connecting to it with my iPad - also the same thing, unable to connect. I couldn't try any other networks yet.
What should I do next? Could this be a hardware issue? PS: I've never dropped or damaged the iPad in any way, and it was just lying on the day when wifi stopped working.
    Thank you.
