Unable to Log and Capture AND make FCP a boot disk

I am unable to go into Log and Capture mode in FCP 4. I can capture from firewire using I movie just fine so I know the sytem works. The minute I open Log and Capture from within FCP (with the JVC Mini-DV camera hooked up thru Firewire), it crashes. Help. I upgraded from FCP 3 to FCP 4 a couple years ago and it hasn't worked right since. Would re-installing the FCP 4 upgrade work? Also, my system works very sluggish. Please explain to me how I would make the veersion of FCP 4 my boot disk. I realize that I can't have the FCP 4 application and the media on the same drive but is there a way to partition one of my drives and make FCP one of the startup disks? Hope this isn't too confusing. Thanks.

First off, FCP 4 was darn unstable. FCP 4.5 is a free upgrade and is STILL the most stable version out there. FCP 5 is getting there.
Secondly, try:
Shane's Stock Tip Mantra: If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the appropriate version of FCP Rescue at http://fcprescue.andersholck.com/ and run it.
2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
As for partitioning the hard drive, that isn't necessary. Hasn't been since FCP 3.

Unable to log into iMessage and intermittent issues with FaceTime

Late 2011 MacBook Pro, OS X 10.8.4. I'm an admin level Windows guy but a relatively new (and otherwise very pleased) convert to Mac OS.
This morning Messages started repeatedly prompting me for my iMessage password and FaceTime has starting working only intermittently. Both work fine from my iPad and iPhone 5. Both have been working from my MacBook Pro for months.
This morning when I tried to fire up Messages on the MacBook I got an error saying "The server encountered an error processing registration". After doing some Googling, I noticed that many folks said that when they had this problem they also had an issue with FaceTime. I confirmed that FaceTime was indeed giving me the same error as iMessage. After trying some solutions from past threads that didn't work, I rebooted. Now instead of throwing an error, Messages just keeps asking me for my iMessage password again and again. FaceTime works occasionally but sometimes when I get a call and click answer, I get "call failed" as my iPhone and iPad continue to ring and then I'm asked to re-enter my password on the MacBook. If I enter my password it just sits and spins. If i quit FaceTime and start it again, it'll usually log in successfully but calls may or may not work (following the same pattern I just mentioned).
The odd thing to me is that when I tested FaceTime on my iPad, I got notifications on my iPad and iPhone and my primary and alternate email address were now registered with FaceTime. They have been for over a year so I'm not sure why I'm getting those notifications again.
I'm able to log into the Mac App store without a problem using the same AppleID
What I've tried so far based on Google results:
1. In Keychain Access, reset my default keychain - No improvement
2. In Keychain Access, selected Keychain First Aid, repaired and verified - No improvement
3. On my iPad, turned iMessage off and back on - No improvement, though iMessage on the iPad still works fine
4. Confirmed that my primary and secondary AppleID email addresses and password are correct. The email address associated with my AppleID is not associated with any other AppleIDs.

This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are many possible causes for it. Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
Before proceeding, test on another network, if possible. That could be a public Wi-Fi hotspot, if your computer is portable, or a cellular network if you have a mobile device that can share its Internet connection. If you find that iMessage works on the other network, the problem is in your network or at your ISP, not in your computer.
Step 1
Check the status of the service. If the service is down, wait tor it to come back up. There may be a localized outage, even if the status indicator is green.
Step 2
Restart your broadband device and your router, if different. You may have to skip this step if you don't control those devices.
Step 3
From the menu bar, select
 ▹ About This Mac
Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or obviously invalid, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.
Step 4
Take the steps suggested in this support article. If you don't understand some of the steps or can't carry them out, ask for guidance.
Step 5
From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the Proxies tab. If the box marked SOCKS Proxy is checked, uncheck it. You don’t need to change any other settings in the window. Click OK and then Apply. Test.
The result may be that you can't connect to the Internet at all. Revert the change if that happens, or if iMessage still doesn't work. Remember that you must Apply any changes you make in the preference pane before they take effect.
Step 6
Select from the menu bar
 ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Storage
and click
Block all sites from storing information on this computer
Close the preference pane.
Step 7
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
If iMessage worked in the guest account, stop here and post your results.
Step 8
Boot in safe mode and log in. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and test again.
If iMessage worked in safe mode, but didn't work when you booted out of safe mode, stop here and post your results.
Step 9
Reset the NVRAM.
Step 10
Reinstall OS X.
Step 11
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or contact Apple Support.

Grab and capture and convert file to be able to send via email????

Hi experts,
I have been trying to capture an image from a website through grap and capture
which works well and converts to a .tiff file.
What I am trying to do is to be able to take the file and import it into an email
and send it to people (primarily PC users). However they get nothing in their
email.
someone had suggested converting it to a .jpg file BUT I am not familiar how to do that (I did just change the .tiff to .jpg BUT that didn't seem to make any
difference.)
Cutting and pasting also won't work as the total image will not appear, only some info will be transferred.
Does anyone know of an easy way to grab and capture an image an then be able to transmit it in its entirety through an email file?

Also, an even easier way, many times, is to just
use
your mouse to drag the image from the website to
the
desktop. If it was posted as a JPEG it will still
be
one after dragging. However, be aware that just
because you can do this doesn't mean you have the
right to do so.
Also Control-Click (or Right-Click with a two button
mouse) and use the menu to "Save Image to ...." or
"Copy Image"
When I Control-Click the pop-up menu will only give me the following
choices:
Back
Reload
Save Page As
(and a few others)
When I used the "Save Page As" it create an HTML file which when I emailed
it --only some information came through -- not the whole image
THERE IS NO "SAVE IMAGE TO" OR "COPY IMAGE" OPTION
Your first suggestion works real well and if there is a short-cut or I am
doing something wrong, please let me know.

Make a USB boot disk to restore OS AND files

I use Time Machine faithfully. I've installed OS 10.6 on a thumb drive for emergencies to restore files etc. when i've errantly thrown them away, and always thought I could somehow use it to restore my system in the event of a really big problem (never had to really test it out for real...until last night!)
I discovered that just having a boot disk isn't enough. I still needed to boot from the original CD, go to "Utilities", then "Restore from Backup". So much for all my planning.
Isn't there a way to include that essential feature on my USB boot disk?

All you need is a external powered USB drive and free Carbon Copy Cloner.

You can hold option and boot from the clone, make a backup or reverse clone when you want, total access to the clone from another Mac.
You don't need TimeGizmo or a USB thumb drive or cd's that scratch. Your not a newbie that deletes files by accident.

[MDT] Sysprep and capture, and OOBE

Hi my friends, I'm experiencing a little issue.
I want to deploy custom images with OOBE. In other terms, when a client boot his computer for the first time, I want Welcome window display, and ask for account name, etc.
But now, when I boot client computer, it auto-signs in to an administrator session and finish MDT deployment. Please help me understand.
Let's me explain how i proceed. First, I installed with an iso file my Windows, and when I get welcome windows, I enter in audit mode to add some programs etc. Then I launched my \\ServerMDT\DeploymentShare$\Scripts\LiteTouch.vbs to start Sysprep.
It reboots, and I am able to boot PXE and start capturing. Works like a charm. Now I upload my captured image in another DeploymentShare using a Standard Client Task Sequence to deploy my captured image. I updated my new DeploymentShare, etc.
The deployment looks to work great. But when it reboots, it signs in without asking for password or else, and finalize deployment. My programs are here, it is OK. But I haven't my OOBE.
What I misunderstood ? Help me guys...

How do I make an OSX boot disk

I recently bought a Mid 2011 Mac Mini off my brother (because the new Late 2012 Mac Mini I bought has a quite a few bugs - see this thread) and would like to do a fresh install of Mountain Lion. Problem is there's no "Install OS X Mountain Lion.app" in the /Applications folder. He did pay for it to upgrade it on the Mac Mini, but when I go to the App Store to download it, it wants me to pay another $20.99 for it. He's now using a new 15" Retina Macbook Pro which already comes with Mountain Lion, so the license for it he bought for this Mac Mini isn't being used anywhere else, so there's no piracy going on.
How can I do a fresh install of OS X and make a backup USB stick so that I have it in case things go wrong again? It's crashing something shocking lately, even though my brother has already reinstalled OS X somehow.

Unlike the old days when possession of the installer DVD gave you right to the system copy, now with downloads the license remains with the purchaser of the software even if the computer is passed on. In other words, you will have to buy your own copy of Mountain Lion since to download it and install it you have to be logged onto an Apple account used to purchase the software.

How you make an ssd boot disk?

I'm considering a 6 core MacPro. I'll want to replace the internal 1 tb drive with an SSD boot drive on an OWC Accelsior PCIe SSD card. It'll be a pretty minimal config. Apps, data files and Time Machine will live on mirrored internal 4 TB Hitach Sata drives.
Is it doable to move the O.S. etc over to SSD and then remove the internal drive to free up the drive slot? If so, what's the best way?

I want to install a fresh clean copy of lion on a new 750gb hard drive. But I don't have the recovery disks. Is there a way that I can backup the operating system only. I don't want no files, no previous data just the operating system & iLife.

"log and capture" causing unexpected quits

Hello, so today I tested out an HX A1 on my macbook pro to see if my computer could handle editing the HD footage. So I selected the easy setup "HDV - 1080i60", created a new project, saved it, and clicked "log and capture", but FCP unexpectedly quit immediately after clicking. I tried multiple times and restarted my computer but it kept happening right after I clicked it. Why is it doing that?
As a side note, I've made dozens of movies using this version of FCP on my computer (SH, not HD) with this problem never happening before. Also, when I change my easy setup to regular NTSC right now and make a new project, "log and capture" works just fine. I also opened iMovie HD and captured and played back the 10 second test clip from the HX A1 perfectly.

I went to the apple store and the genius bar worker said he has seen this problem before. The only way he's gotten it to work is through a reinstall. So I'll try that soon and report if it worked.

Can one Log and Capture file Overwrite another?

This is one of the weirdest things I have ever encountered. I several files into a FCP project and have looked at Clip 63, which is supposed to be the last shot of a scene. Now I cannot find that file anywhere for the life of me on my computer, and for some reason, Clip 63 is the exact same footage as my Clip 20. Has FCP re-written this file as a duplicate???

Media offline after log and capture HELP!!!!

i am capturing media from my camera from dv tape into FCP,
i log and capture the footage and all seems fine, i've done this hundreds of times before.
today however when i log and capture the file comes up as media offline (file logo with red line through it) in the browser window, i need to get this file done asap!! HELP!!

i have a deck and i've tried coming from the deck, but its giving me fallout due to deck issues i have, so i'm coming from the camera. when i log and cap i get the file with the red line.
when i try to reconnect it to a file all i have in the capture scratch folder is the bad file from the deck.
so i cant reconnect the media from what i have captured already.
so essentially my problem is that from my camera, i log and capture and get a file that does not go into capture scratch and yet still comes up as an unconnected media file in the browser!!??

Trying to capture DV material, log and capture spinning beach ball

I have not worked in DV for quite awhile. I am trying to just capture a few minutes and the log and capture window gives me the beach ball of death when I hit capture now. If I hit play all seems fine, but try and capture and the beach ball shows up. What gives?

Live Conferencing, capturing and maybe editing....

To those who are familiar with this...
Here is the script...
I work part time for a firm who do audio visuals for Mainly Conferences and events in the Channel Island, UK.
Most of these events require Camera work, for live projections with visual desk mixing. Each camera would have tapes in and press record when the event would start. Coming out of the mixing desk would be connected a Sony DV recorder that records live what shows on the screen.
Up until now, when clients required a DVD of the event, we would bring the tapes back inhouse, log and capture, and start editing..
Problem starts here....
The Live Mixed tape recorded is not good enough for DVD play back for two reasons.
1. for example of a pointpower presentation which would drag on the screens, would not be required on the DVD for such a long time, therefore editing is required.
2. Slides, photos coming out of PC/Mac would go through scan converters in order to fit the screen in the room. Losing the aspect ratio of 4:3 or 16:9.
SO....
We have come to the conclusion that what ever is mixed live for the screens is not good enough for the DVD, and we need to edit for DVD seperatly. Cannot use the live mixed tape. We must use each camera feed seperatly for editing and the slides, PP presentations or keynote seperate...
How do we do this quickly? What I mean by quickly is, yes of course we could bring all tapes back to the studio and capture them, a series of Mac, each having a player, each capturing at the same time.....That requires time... and most events finish at 2am...
Question 1:
The idea is to Capture straight from Cameras (keeping the tapes in cameras as backup) straight into a powermac. This is to save capturing time....
How do we do this?
Question 2:
FCP support Multicam editing. But as far as I understand it, this is only post production. Or is it not? Can we edit live straight from the camera feed?
Question 3:
Would a capture card slove our problem? something like a blackmagic decklink?
The last option we have left is to invest into a new Visual desk, split the feed from the cameras, and create a second mixing/editing desk, first one being for live projection, and this second new one being for DVD production, mixing using a visual desk, recording this to tape, being left with only one tape to capture which will still need a few twicks to fix on FCP.
What do you reckon?
I know this is a long thread, but trying to be as clear as possible....

I sort of knew the answer to my own questions but was hoping for some sort of magic trick to sort our problems....
Yes those conference, ball, events are important... big budget, big nights.... But thats no problem... it is turning around the job quick that is difficult.... and hte more time consuming is capturing....
I have more ideas now on how best and quick to do the job....
Picture ready is over budget I am afraid....
