Unable to log in to my account

Hi!
I have transferred my Home folder to a new, larger disk, then erased the original disk. (The system is on a different (SSD) disk, cloned from an earlier residence by using SuperDuper. Has worked flawless otherwise.)
When copying (using Sync) I dragged the icons for the whole volume in the Source and Target positions of the Sync window, not just the folder.
To erase the disk, I had to start from the system CD to unmount the OLD data disk, which I thought was not in use at all.
There were 3 partitions on that disk, one containing my Home folder.
Now when I try to restart, I get the message "You are unable to log in to user account <my account name> at this time … because an error occured."
I have earlier experienced the same in an attempt to install Windows via BootCamp, see here:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2803773?threadID=2803773&tstart=10
But this time, I have not (yet) removed any drives.
I can access everything on the Nehalem desktop machine via the MacBook Pro to which it is networked via the Internet router and from which I am writing this.
Hoping for your help - Hening.

It looks indeed like I should have known this on beforehand. I was not aware of that I should have used Migration Assistant. I thought it was OK to use SuperDuper to clone a startup volume.
Now that I have messed up, the history/scenario is this:
My system 10.6.7 and apps were on a HD, the Home folder on another HD.
Then I bought a 40 GB SSD, cloned the startup volume on to it using Super Duper. Seemed to work fine.
Later, I copied my Home folder to a larger HD using Sync.
And erased the HD that had contained the old Home.
That's when the trouble started, and I started this thread. Since I got no reply for some days, I started a new one
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3043638
asking how to repair permissions. Later, I remembered that I CAN log into my Me account from the MacBook! So I understood that it was not the Me account that was corrupted in itself, but the connection to the new system drive.
In the meantime, using root, I have created a new user account Me2 on the SSD so I can log in to my Mac. But I can not get access to the Apple-created folders in the old Home folder.
The scenario I want to end up with for the future is this:
As you advise, I will keep system, apps and Home together on the SSD - but only an "EMPTY" Home, with ALL data stored on an HD.
Could you please guide me what to do?
One particular problem is Mail. Mails are data that swell and may not have place on the SSD. And generally, I want to keep ALL data out of ALL these intricate procedures for ALL future...! And all in ONE place.
Is there a mail app that I can install in the apps folder, but which will accept that the mail boxes are installed on the data drive, and accessible all independent of all this permissions stuff, just like any other file? Thunderbird? I will try.
But first I need to get access to the mails which are already stored in my Me1 account...And right now I discover that from the new account, I can not access my data on the external data backup disk either!! So I absolutely need to get access to my Me1 account.
Sigh!

You may have been infected by malware that you downloaded and installed.  The download was probably called "FlashPlayer.pkg".  If you still have it please don't trash it quite yet.  For the benefit of others in this community can you please upload it to http://www.virustotal.com.  Once you have done that copy the ID and report it back here along with the exact name of the file that you uploaded.
If the results do not show anything in the status column next to ClamAV can you also upload it to http://cgi.clamav.net/sendvirus.cgi and in the description box include the keyword "macos".  If you know the name of the site where you downloaded it from, that would also be useful.  Then you should trash it so you won't be tempted to run it again.
A description of this malware along with instructions on fixing it can be found here: http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/trojan_bash_qhost_wb.shtml
Thanks in advance and let us know how it goes.

  • HT4157 I am unable to log into the "View Account",

I am unable to log into the "View Account" on my iPad,  I have tried to Reset the account but never get sent an e-mail.  (I know what e-mail address it was originally setup with, but I did try all 3 just to be sure).   I also not not able to reset the Subscription, for some reason that is not an option anymore -  It was an option last week, I filled out the subscription to activate my connection, once I did the 3G went a way and that is when things started.
Just some other background - the same day this started,  I received error trying to watch unrented movies on my iPad.  When I tried to start watching, I received an error - "Unable to Open".  I am not sure this is related or not.
I have since reset the entire iPad,  (Reset all settings and Data) thinking this would fix the issue but no lick.

    IOS is 5.1.1 (9B206)

    Any suggestions ?

I have had a similar problem trying to view my account with AT&T, it could be the AT&T server is down for viewing your account.

  • Unable to log in to user account

I just upgraded my Mac OS X 10.2.8 Server to Mac OS X 10.4.8 Tiger. I used the Archive and Install Option and selected the Preserve Users and Network Settings option. It installed, and I restarted the system. When the log in screen came up I attempted to log in to the administrator account. After I typed in the password it gave me the following error message:
You are unable to log in to the user account "[account name]" at this time.
Logging into the account failed because an error occured. The home folder for the user account is located on an AFP or SMB server.
I am able to log into another administrative user account, but it is not the main account. Is it doing this because I upgraded from a server OS to a regular OS? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Unable to log in to user account after installing windows 7 using Bootcamp

    Hi everyone,
I need help. I have been at it for days, I have googled every which way but I am not able to fix this. Basically my problem is that I am unable to log in to my user account after I used Bootcamp to install windows 7. I will explain what I did up until I couldn't log in.
I backed up my user account using Time Machine(I was logged in as the user). The account had FileVault activated and I neglected to disable FileVault before back up. I just didn't think to, it did not even occur to me! Then I partitioned Macintosh HD, I was doing this with my step son and he thought we were supposed to partition the hard drive first before running Bootcamp! After that was done, I couldn't run Bootcamp because obviously we had whipped the HD clean! Anyway, I reinstalled the OS X using the internet, after which I run Bootcamp and successfully installed windows 7. Then I went on to restore my account using Time Machine, only when I try to log in I get the error message "you are unable to log in to the user account at this time". I tried every possible solution I could find on here, including creating a new admin account, deleting the old account but saving the user folder and then routing the new account to the old user folder. Still nothing. I have tried logging in as a root user, reset the master password and deleted FileVault files from Library/keychain in the hope I would access the user account, but to no avail. What's more is that I can't even see the sparse bundle or sparse image files that people keep referring too. I can't even find it on the Time Machine back up! I then thought I would cut my losses and try system recovery using Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery (cost me £81) but it did not recover any of my photos, music, videos or documents.
I honestly can't come to terms with the fact that I am unable to login to an account with 3 years worth of pictures and documents. I am having a hard time letting go. Is there anyway possible to crack this?
    Thank you in advance.
By the way, I am running Mountain Lion OX 10.8.4 on MacBook mid 2010

I have this exact problem. Installed Bootcamp on a networked iMac running Mountain lion and and can no longer log in to my Mac user account. Would love if any of the pro users on here can shed a bit of light.

  • I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. After the upgrade I was unable to log in to my accounts. After days of frustrating procedures (reinstalling, disk utility clean-up, verification, password resets on terminal window...)

I think I isolated the problem to a software issue. I called the software company and they directed me to a website with the following set of instructions:
    Website: http://www.thursby.com/after-upgrading-i-cant-login.html
    Instructions:
    Support
    FAQs
ADmtiMac v5 is not supported on OS X 10.7, Lion. If you have already upgraded to Lion, the incompatibility can cause a situation preventing you from logging in to any account. To remedy this situation, please follow these steps:
NOTE: If you do not feel comfortable performing these steps, please contact our Support Specialists for further help.
    1. Restart the computer holding down the Command+S keys. This will start the system up in Single User mode.
    2. At the prompt type the following commands (these commands will be listed above the prompt just in case you need to reference them):
       /sbin/fsck -fy    {hit the return key}
      /sbin/mount -uw /   {hit the return key}
    3. Modify the /etc/authorization. At the prompt type
       vi /etc/authorization    {return}
This opens the file in the vi editor.  Then type:
       /AMHomeDirMechanism   {return}
This searches for the first occurrence of AMHomeDirMechanism (case-sensitivity is important).
    do this:
dd     (don't press return, this deletes the line the cursor is on)
n     (don't press return, this searches for the next occurrence of AMHomeDirMechanism)
until there are no more occurrences of AMHomeDirMechanism (vi will say "E486: Pattern not found: AMHomeDirMechanism"). Depending on the version, there will be 3 or 4 occurrences.
    Then:
:wq    {return} (This saves the file).
(NOTE:  You may see "E138 Can't write ciminfo file $HOME/.viminfo!".  If so, please hit the return key, then continue.)
       exit    {return}
This last line allows the boot to continue, and you should then be able to log in andINSTALL ADmitMac v6.
I did this and it did not work. Redoing this several times over, I noticed that the issue is that Drive is "Read-only".  Changing permissions is above my "pay-grade" Any help will be appreciated it. I do not want to wipe out my hard drive and restart anew.

Addendum: I read on a post here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=420169) about removing some kext files in order to trick OSX into thinking that there were no FireWire ports.
I followed the instructions and removed from /System/Library/Extensions/ the following files:
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
I restarted and BAM...Snow Leopard booted crazy fast and the mouse and keyboard worked instantly.
The System Profiler says "No FireWire ports were found."
So this tells me that the FW port is probably the culprit and is messing up the installation.
So how do I hack the Mountain Lion installer and tell it to ignore the FW port, which is obviously quite dead? Or is there something I can do to the Base system that is similar?

  • Unable to log in with Microsoft Account

I'm on Windows 7 Professional using the Skype desktop client.  When I log in using my Skype name, I'm  unable to see my Lync contacts.  I was successful signing into my Microsoft Live account after several attempts yesterday. This morning when I booted up my laptop, I get an error that it cannot log in.  If I sign into my Microsoft Live (Outlook) e-mail, I'm able to use the IM from the webmail client.  This happens often with the desktop client.  Any help would be much appreciated.  This is so frustrating.

    Try this:
    Reset all Internet Explorer settings:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737
Open Internet Explorer. Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN settings. Make sure that the only option selected is “Automatically detect settings”.
    Clear all Temporary Internet Files.
Open Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Internet Options -> General. In the section “Browsing history” press the “Settings” button and in the next window the “View files” button. Delete all files from the Temporary Internet Files folder.

  • Client Unable to Log In

I work at a school and am trying to test out Leopard on clients before upgrading the school's computers this summer. However, clients are unable to log into their OD Accounts on the Leopard machines. My server is currently running Tiger, but hopefully THAT isn't the problem.
    Some more info:
    - I do not get a simple shake; it reports "could not log into user account X at this time because an error occurred" when I attempt to log in.
    - In Directory Services on the client, everything appears to be hunky-dory and I get a green light, same on the login screen.
    - DNS appears to be functioning correctly, I have run hostname, changeip, nslookup, etc and everything appears to be fine, my server ip and hostname resolve to each other correctly.
    - I am able to "Connect to Server" and access accounts via AFP without any problems.
    - I am not using Kerberos for authentication.
    - All other clients(Panther, Tiger) are able to log in properly.
Any thoughts? Or other info that might be useful?
    Thanks!

I'm having a similar problem with 10.5.2 Leopard server and client -- no Tiger involved.
I have the green light on the login screen and am able to log in as an OD administrator, but regular OD users are rejected with a login window shake. I never specified any home directories because they were auto-generated on machines locally when I logged in with the OD administrator.
Apple phone support were able to duplicate my problem and had me do an Enterprise Data Capture. Apple engineers were also able to duplicate my problem. Here is some of what phone support emailed me:
+I got a reply from engineering. They said they were able to duplicate the issue with a 10.5 up to a 10.5.2 client with no home directory specified. The only current workaround is to set up an automount location for home directories and specify a home location place for the users. The clients do not have to be bound to the server, they just need to have a home folder directory specified.+
+Engineering is aware of the issue and are working on it. For now this is the only workaround we have.+
I haven't had a chance to try this Apple workaround, but maybe it will help you.

There's a whole lot to read in your post, and frankly I have not read it all.
Having said that, this troubleshooting guide should help:

In particular, pay attention to the mobile device support sections near the bottom, assuming you have already done the items above it.

  • Unable to log in to the user account [username] at this time

My Powerbook G4 is running Mac OS X 10.4.11
    Processor: 1.5 GHz PowerPC G4
    Memory: 768 MB DDR SDRAM
    Startup Disk Macintosh HD
    Serial # 4H511OAJRJ5
    Capacity 74.4 GB
    Available: 2.3 GB
My problems began when I had a warning message that read something like, “your startup disk is getting full. Delete some files”
Around the same time my battery was showing signs of being spent (wouldn’t take a full charge) and would shutdown my powerbook in the middle of operation. I replaced the battery within 12 hours, rebooted, and everything seemed normal; I could log in and access all programs, files, photos, music, etc. The error message reappeared to deletes some files. I ran TechTool Deluxes and it suggested repairing my Volume Directory. There were a few suggestions in green and one in red. I accepted the ones in green and made the changes. It reopened TechTool and ran again, this time everything showed up as a “red” (drastic) directory change. I did not accept. I shut down. I rebooted, and that is when my heart sank.
My account log in screen appeared (I have my master account and a “test” account available) and I entered my log in password. After several moments, the message “You are unable to log in to the user account [username] at this time.” I can log in to my “test” account but I have not been able to access any of my files from that account. Also, my Test account appears to be running Panther instead of Tiger; could that be? Anyway, I read some similar problem posts here and was hopeful that DiskWarrior could help restore me. I purchased and ran it successfully (at least DiskWarrior said it was a success) but I still have the same results.
I tried to access both my caches folder and my Desktop folder from my “test” account, but these are the error messages I received:
The folder “Caches” could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges.
The folder “Desktop” could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges.
I was shocked to see my Available space was only 2.5 GB. I don’t know how that can be right.
I’m open to anything to retrieve my files – Any suggestions?

You need to delete some file not try to repair the disk volume. but anyway...

    Why?
I’m open to anything to retrieve my files – Any suggestions?
I buy an external disk with both fireware & usb and use carbon copy cloner to duplicate you hd.
run batcmd from an admin account to let you change permissions.
From an administrator account enable root & be careful. This will let you look at any file on the system & delete everything!!!
    Get a new admin id.
"BatChmod is a Cocoa utility for manipulating file and folder privileges in Mac OS X. It allows the manipulation of ownership as well as the privileges associated to the Owner, Group or others."
    http://www.macchampion.com/arbysoft/Welcome.html
As an aside, I just noticed that the button to "apply to all enclosed items' is greyed out. I started checking other folders and best I can tell, all folders on my startup volume will not allow me to apply any permission changes to all enclosed items. Think this might have something to do with the alias issue?
I noticed that my "apply to all enclosed items' button is greyed out too. I use BatChmod fps instead.
Get the Mac to set up an additional administrative account. You can then change the password on your old account.
Start with your computer power off. Hold down command-s. Power on your computer.
    Type in the following:
The first two commands will depend on your release of Mac OS X. Look at what is typed out in the console to determine the exact format.
    # Type the follow two instructions to access the startup disk in read/write. Press return after each command.
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /var/db
    pwd
#List all files. The l is a lower case L.
    ls -a
#The move command acts as a rename command in this format.
    mv -i .applesetupdone .applesetupdone.old
    reboot
Once you've done that the computer reboots and it's like the first time you used the machine. Your old accounts are all safe. From there you just change all other account passwords in the account preferences!!
